thods and proper repair procedures are essential for the safe, reliable operation of all motor vehicles,
as well as the safety of the person do ing the work. This manual provides genera l directions for accomplishing service and
repair work with tested, effect ive, techniques. Following them will help assure reliability.
There are numerous variations in procedures, techniques, tools, and parts for servicing vehicles, as well as in the skill of the
person doing the work. This manual cannot possibly anticipate all such variations and provide advice or cautions as to each.
Accordingly, anyone who depart s from the instructions provided in the manua l must first establish that neither personal
safety nor vehicle integrity is compromised from choices of methods, tools or parts.

This
manual incorporates descript
ive, diagnostic, and repair information to help trained Jaguar technicians complete service
and rectification procedures. The informat ion can be accessed by choosing the appropriate five digit section number. For
example, Section 412-03 covers air conditioning , which is part of the Climate Control System.
The manual is organized into groups covering generic aspects of the vehicle systems; the first digit of the section
number represents a group se lected from the following:
1. General Information.
2. Chassis.
3. Powertrain.
4. Electrical.
5. Body and Paint.
Each of the groups comprises sections re lating to specific areas of the vehicle.
The second and third digits of the section number indicate the vehicle system.
The last two digits of the se ction number define the system covered, more specifically.
Each section comprises one or more of the following sub-sections:

ecifications are shown in maintenance procedure illustra
tions and also in the torque specifications chart located at
the front of the relevant section.
Disconnecting/Connecting the Battery
Ow ing t
o the electronic components used on the vehicle, it is important that the battery is disconnected when specified in a
maintenance procedure.
When the battery is connected, the specified procedure must be followed, to ensure the correct operation of all vehicle
systems; refer to Section 414-01.
Use of Control Modules
Control modu les may
only be used on the ve
hicle to which they were originally fitted. Do not attempt to use or test a control
module on any other vehicle.

On
completion of a maintenance procedure, a thorough test should be carried out, to ensu
re that the relevant vehicle
systems are working correctly.
Protecting the Vehicle
Al ways
fit covers to protect
the fenders before commencing work in the engi ne compartment. Cover the seats and carpets,
wear clean overalls and wash hands or wear gloves before working inside the vehicle. Avoid spilling hydraulic fluid,
antifreeze or battery acid on the paintwork. In the event of spillage, wash off with water imme diately. Use polythene sheets
in the trunk to protect carpets. Always use the recommended service tool, or a satisfactory equivalent, where specified.
Protect temporarily exposed screw thread s by replacing nuts or fitting caps.
Preparation
Before disassembly, clean the surrounding ar ea
as thoroughly as possible. When co
mponents have been removed, blank off
any exposed openings using grease-proof paper and masking tape. Immediately seal fuel, oil and hydraulic lines when
separated, using plastic caps or plugs, to prevent loss of fluid and the entry of dirt. Close the open ends of oilways, exposed
by component removal, with tapered hardw ood plugs or readily visible plastic plugs. Immediately a component is removed,
place it in a suitable container; use a se parate container for each component and its associated pa rts. Before dismantling a
component, clean it thoroughly with a recommended cleaning agent; check that the agent will not damage any of the
materials within the component. Clean the bench and obtain ma rking materials, labels, containers and locking wire before
dismantling a component.
Dismantling
O b
serve scrupulous cleanliness when dismantling components,
particularly when parts of the brake, fuel or hydraulic
systems are being worked on. A particle of dirt or a fragment of cloth could caus e a dangerous malfunction if trapped in
these systems. Clean all tapped holes, crev ices, oilways and fluid passages with compressed air. Do not permit compressed
air to enter an open wound. Always use ey e protection when using compressed air.
Ensure that any O-rings used for sealing are correctly refitted or renewed if disturbed. Mark mating parts to ensure that
they are replaced as dismantled. Whenever possible use markin g materials which avoid the possibilities of causing distortion
or the initiation of cracks, which could occur if a center pu nch or scriber were used. Wire together mating parts where
necessary to prevent accidental interchange (e.g roller bearing components). Tie labels on to all parts to be renewed and to
parts requiring further inspection before being passed fo r reassembly. Place labelled parts and other parts for rebuild in
separate containers. Do not disc ard a part which is due for renewal until it ha s been compared with the new part, to ensure
that the correct part has been obtained.

76.16.01.
4. Remove the twin fan and motor assembly. Refer to Operation
26.25.12.
5. Remove the timing cover and al l associated components, as
detailed in Operation 12.65.01.
6. Remove both front wheel and tyre assemblies. Refer to
Operation 74.20.05.
7. Remove the undertray. Re fer to Operation 76.22.90.
8. Remove the front crossmember fo r access. Refer to Operation
76.10.05.

2. Remove the drain plug from the oil pan and drain the engine oil.

Removal
Installation
1. Open the engine compartment and fit paint protection sheets.

2. Disconnect the batt ery ground cable.
Remove the battery cover.
3. Remove the Engine Covers, Air Intake Tube, Catalytic
Converters and the Front Muffler. Drain the transmission fluid
and remove the transmission for access.
Refer to Operation 44.20. 01 Transmission Remove, in
Section 307-01A, which includes each of the above
operations.

4. Remove the drive plate.
Prevent the drive plate from rotating by use of a small
wedge in the ring gear.
Remove the bolts which secure the drive plate to the
crankshaft.
Remove the drive plate.
5. Clean the crankshaft mating face and any other components
which are to be refitted.

1. Fit the drive plate.
Fit and align the drive plate to the crankshaft.
Fit, but not tighten, the bolt s which secure the drive plate
to the crankshaft.
Prevent the drive plate from rotating by use of a small
wedge in the ring gear.
2. Tighten the securing bolts in two stages and in the order
shown.

Removal
Installation
1. Open the engine compartment and fit paint protection sheets.

2. Disconnect the batt ery ground cable.
Remove the battery cover.
3. Remove the Engine Covers, Air Intake Tube, Catalytic
Converters and the Front Muffler. Drain the transmission fluid
and remove the transmission for access.
Refer to Operation 44.20. 01 Transmission Remove, in
Section 307-01B, which includes each of the above
operations.

4. Remove the drive plate.
Prevent the drive plate from rotating by use of a small
wedge in the ring gear.
Remove the bolts which secure the drive plate to the
crankshaft.
Remove the drive plate.
5. Clean the crankshaft mating face and any other components
which are to be refitted.

1. Fit the drive plate.
Fit and align the drive plate to the crankshaft.
Fit, but not tighten, the bolt s which secure the drive plate
to the crankshaft.
Prevent the drive plate from rotating by use of a small
wedge in the ring gear.
2. Tighten the securing bolts in two stages and in the order
shown.

ENSURE THAT ALL FIRE PREVENTION PROCEDURES ARE ACTIVE.
BEFORE PROCEEDING, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE WARNING NOTES GIVEN IN SECTION 100-00 (UNDER THE
HEADING 'SAFETY PRECAUTIONS') ARE READ AND UNDERSTOOD.

9. Depressurise the fuel system.
Ensure that the ignition is switched off and remove the
valve cap from the fuel cross-over pipe. Place a cloth
under the valve to collect any spillage.
Place a closed container, su itable for collecting fuel,
adjacent to the vehicle. Remove the lid.

10. Connect the fuel injection pressure test equipment 310 - 058
(or other suitable type). Insert the drain / bleed tube into the
fuel container. Follow the ma nufacturer's instructions and
depressurise the fuel system.
11. Store the drained fuel safely and ensure that the lid is closed
securely. Remove the equipmen t and discard the cloth from
beneath the valve. Refit the valve cap.

12. Disconnect the breather pipe from the A-Bank camshaft
cover.
1. Disconnect the breather pipe from the stub pipe.
2. Remove and discard the O-ring seal from the breather
pipe.
13. Disconnect the air flow meter multi-plug.
14. Cut and remove the strap which secures the vacuum pipe to
the induction elbow.
15. Disconnect the intake tube from the throttle body.
1. Remove the two bolts which secure the intake tube to the throttle body.
2. Disconnect the intake tube from the throttle body.

T
he cooling system for the supercharged engine is very similar
to the normally aspirated engine, but with the addition of a
water cooled, intake air charge cooling system. This comprises a radiator, an electrically operated water pump and two
charge air cooler assemblies (heat exchangers) - one for each bank. The system works independently, but is connected to the
main cooling system at the bottom hose to allow for therma l expansion and to help to prevent unwanted circulation.
The condenser for the air conditioning system fits between th e coolant main radiator and the charge air cooling system
radiator.

un the engine at between 1500 and 2000 rpm until the
cooling fans operate.
10. Switch on the climate control system, set to maximum heat,
and check that heat is coming from the heater at the fascia
vents or the footwell outlets.
11. Switch off the engine and allow it to cool down.
12. When cool, remove the pressure cap and top up the system
as necessary at the header tank.

If necessary, fit new seals to the pressure cap.
1. Remove both O-rings from the pressure cap.

14. Check that the pressure cap is fitted. Remove the plug from
the air charge cooler fill point. Pour coolant carefully into the air

charge cooler fill point until the system is full.
