WARNING: IF THE

ENGINE IS NOT
RUNNING, THE STEERING WILL BECOME HEAVY AND THE FORCE NECESSARY TO
EFFECTIVELY APPLY THE BRAKES WILL BE GREATLY INCREASED.
• CAUTIONS:
A vehicle with a defective transmission must be towed by rear suspended tow.
The vehicle towing point is not suit able for use with a solid tow-bar.
Do not use the crossbeam tie bar as a towing location.
When the vehicle is being towed on its own wheels:
Loc a
l regulations for the towing of ve
hicles must be followed. In some co untries the registration number of the
towing vehicle and an 'On Tow' sign or warning triangle must be displayed at the rear of the towed vehicle.

must be in Neutral.
The
ignition switch must be in positi
on II to release the steering lock and make the direction indicators, horn and
stop lamps operate.
A di
stance of 0.8 km (0.5 mi
le) must not be exceeded.

ed of 48 km/h (30 mph) must not be exceeded.
The tow rope must be attached using th

ng location provided; refer to Front Towing Point in this section.

Buzz (E
lectrical)
A
different steering buzz can be caused by
pulse width modulated (PWM) electric actuators used in variable assist steering
systems. This buzz is felt by turning the ignition key to run without starting the engine and holding onto the steering wheel.
In extreme cases, the buzz can be felt with the engine running also.

vibration of the steering wheel, which can be excited at a specific vehicle speed.
Nibble is driven by wheel and tire imbalance exciting a suspensi on recession mode, which then translates into steering gear
travel and finally steering wheel nibble.

s a low frequency oscillation of th
e entire steering system (tire, wheels, st eering gear and linkage, etc.) when the
vehicle is steered during static-park or at low sp eeds. Shudder is very dependent on road surface.

e is a concern with Electric Power Steering (EPS) sy
stems. Torque ripple is most evident at static-park steering
the wheel very slowly from lock to lock. Torque ripple is primarily caused by motor commutation.

curring twice in one revolution is normally as a result of problems with the lower steering
column (intermediate shaft), but foul cond itions generally result in either constant stiffnes s or single point stiffness.
Depending upon the orientation of the joints, the steering can fe el asymmetric (torque falling off in one direction and rising
in the other) or else it can simply have pronounced peaks and troughs as the steering moves from lock to lock.
Wheel Fight
(Kick Back)
W
heel fight is excess feedback of sudden road forces through th
e steering system and back to the driver. It is evaluated at
all vehicle speeds over cobblestones, rough roads, and potholes . The tires, wheels, and suspension generate forces into the
steering systems. Steering friction, hydraulic damping, hydr aulic compliance, mechanical compliance, steering ratio, and
assist gain all affect how much is transmitted to the driver.

CAUTI
ON: Steering gear boots must be
handled carefully to avoid damage. Use new clamps when installing steering
gear boots.
Inspect the boots for cuts, deterioration, tw isting or distortion. Check the steering gear boots to make sure they are tight.
Install new boots or clamps as necessary.
• NOTE: The following steps must be carried out with assistance.
1. 1. With the wheels in the straight ahead po sition, gently turn the steering wheel to the left and the right to check for
free play.
2. 2. Free play should be between 0 and 6 mm (0 and 0.24 in) at the steering wheel rim. If the free play exceeds this
limit, either the ball joints are worn, the lower steering column joints are worn or the backlash of the steering gear
is excessive.

IGNITION.
All circuits, except the star
ter motor, are activated. The key rema ins in this position when driving.
Position 'III'

START. The starter operates for as long as the key is held in this position, ag ainst spring pressure. If the engine fails to
start, the key must be returned to position 'I' befo re another start is attempted.
Lighting Switch

lamp and ticking operate at twice the normal rate.

ps and Headlamps
Thes
e are controlled by rotating the end of the column switch as follows.
In the OFF position:
All
exterior lamps are switched OFF.
In the sidelamp position:
The front
sidelamps, tail, license plate and any other la
mps required by local legislation are switched ON.
The
sidelamps tell-tale lamp illuminates.
In the headlamp position, with the ignition switch in position II:
The h
eadlamps are switched ON in addition to the lamps switched on in the sidelamp position.
If the ignition is switched to the OFF position with the column switch in the headlamp position, the sidelamps, tail and
license plate lamps will stay ON, but the headlamps will switch OFF.
In the AUTO position (where fitted), with the ignition switch in position II:

e sensor mounted on the back of the interior rear view
mirror monitors exterior light levels and automatically
switches the sidelamps and di pped headlamps ON and OFF.
The sensitivity level can be adjusted by turn ing the sensor control knob on the back of the interior mirror, left to decrease or
right to increase. The sensor must not be covered and the windscreen must be kept clean.

essage Center Functions
T
he message center functions:

lected by the button located at the end of the lighting switch stalk.

lected in turn, by repeatedly pressing the button,
from the odometer reading, through the trip computer data
in sequence, and back to th e odometer reading again.

t-hand side of the steering column and controls the fo llowing functions when the
ignition switch in position II.
In the OFF position:
The windscreen wiper is stationary and in the parked positio

In the intermittent wipe position:

rates intermittently, with
a variable time delay between wipes.
The time del
ay can be varied by rotating the column sw
itch collar, which has six positions and varies the delay
between two and 20 seconds. The collar is turned counter-clockwise to increase the delay.
In the normal speed position:

In the high speed position:

ates continuously at high speed.
Flick wipe operation:

3. Route switchgear harness through mounting bracket and remove switchgear.
