SAFETY
86
Changing the FCW status to the “Near”
setting, allows the system to warn the driver
of a possible collision with the vehicle in
front when the distance between the vehicle
in the front is much closer. This setting
provides less reaction time than the “Far”
and “Medium” settings, which allows for a
more dynamic driving experience.
NOTE:
The system will NOT retain the last setting
selected by the driver after ignition shut
down. The system will reset to Medium
sensitivity with FCW "Full On" setting
when the vehicle is restarted.
FCW may not react to irrelevant objects
such as overhead objects, ground reflec-
tions, objects not in the path of the
vehicle, stationary objects that are far
away, oncoming traffic, or leading vehicles
with the same or higher rate of speed.
If FCW is disabled, unavailable screens
will be displayed.
FCW Limited Warning
If the instrument cluster display reads “ACC/
FCW Limited Functionality” or “ACC/FCW
Limited Functionality Clean Front Wind-
shield” momentarily, there may be a condi -tion that limits FCW functionality. Although
the vehicle is still drivable under normal
conditions, the active braking may not be
fully available. Once the condition that
limited the system performance is no longer
present, the system will return to its full
performance state. If the problem persists,
see an authorized dealer.
Service FCW Warning
If the system turns off, and the instrument
cluster display reads “FCW Unavailable
Service Required”, this indicates there is an
internal system fault. Although the vehicle is
still drivable under normal conditions, have
the system checked by an authorized dealer.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
will warn the driver of a low tire pressure
based on the vehicle recommended cold
placard pressure.
The tire pressure will vary with temperature
by approximately 1 psi (7 kPa) for every 12°F
(6.5°C). This means that when the outside
temperature decreases, the tire pressure will
decrease. Tire pressure should always be set
based on cold inflation tire pressure. This is
defined as the tire pressure after the vehicle
has not been driven for at least three hours,
or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after a
three hour period. The cold tire inflation
pressure must not exceed the maximum
inflation pressure molded into the tire side
-
wall. Refer to “Tires” in “Servicing And
Maintenance” for information on how to
properly inflate the vehicle’s tires. The tire
pressure will also increase as the vehicle is
driven. This is normal and there should be no
adjustment for this increased pressure.
The TPMS will warn the driver of a low tire
pressure if the tire pressure falls below the
low-pressure warning limit for any reason,
including low temperature effects and
natural pressure loss through the tire. The
TPMS will continue to warn the driver of low
tire pressure as long as the condition exists,
and will not turn off until the tire pressure is
at or above the recommended cold placard
pressure.
NOTE:
Once the low tire pressure warning (TPMS
Warning Light) illuminates, you must
increase the tire pressure to the recom -
mended cold placard pressure in order for
the TPMS Warning Light to turn off.

within 60 seconds, then the turn signal
lights will blink and the reset procedure must
be performed again in order to be successful.
Maintaining Your Air Bag System Event Data Recorder (EDR)
This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data
Recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an
EDR is to record, in certain crash or near
crash-like situations, such as an air bag
deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data
that will assist in understanding how a
vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is
designed to record data related to vehicle
dynamics and safety systems for a short
period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record
such data as:
How various systems in your vehicle were
operating;
Whether or not the driver and passenger
safety belts were buckled/fastened;
11. Turn ignition STOP/OFF/LOCK.
12. Turn ignition MAR/ACC/ON/RUN. (Entire sequence needs to be
completed within one minute or sequence will need to be repeated).
System is now reset and the engine may be started.
Turn hazard flashers OFF (Manually).

WARNING!
Modifications to any part of the air bag
system could cause it to fail when you
need it. You could be injured if the air
bag system is not there to protect you.
Do not modify the components or wiring,
including adding any kind of badges or
stickers to the steering wheel hub trim
cover or the upper passenger side of the
instrument panel. Do not modify the
front bumper, vehicle body structure, or
add aftermarket side steps or running
boards.
It is dangerous to try to repair any part of
the air bag system yourself. Be sure to
tell anyone who works on your vehicle
that it has an air bag system.
Do not attempt to modify any part of your
air bag system. The air bag may inflate
accidentally or may not function properly if
modifications are made. Take your vehicle
to an authorized dealer for any air bag
system service. If your seat, including your
trim cover and cushion, needs to be
serviced in any way (including removal or
loosening/tightening of seat attachment
bolts), take the vehicle to an authorized
dealer. Only manufacturer approved seat
accessories may be used. If it is necessary
to modify the air bag system for persons
with disabilities, contact an authorized
dealer.

Transmission shifting will be more notice-
able when AutoStick is enabled.
The system may revert to automatic shift
mode if a fault or overheat condition is
detected.
NOTE:
When Selec-Speed or Hill Descent Control is
enabled, AutoStick is not active.
To disengage AutoStick, return the gear
selector to the DRIVE position. You can shift
in or out of the AutoStick position at any time
without taking your foot off the accelerator
pedal.
Transmission Limp Home Mode
Transmission function is monitored electron -
ically for abnormal conditions. If a condition
is detected that could result in transmission
damage, Transmission Limp Home Mode is
activated. In this mode, the transmission
may operate only in a fixed gear, or may remain in NEUTRAL. The Malfunction Indi
-
cator Light (MIL) may be illuminated. Limp
Home Mode may allow the vehicle to be
driven to an authorized dealer for service
without damaging the transmission.
In the event of a momentary problem, the
transmission can be reset to regain all
forward gears by performing the following
steps:
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. Shift the transmission into PARK, if possible. If not, shift the transmission to
NEUTRAL.
3. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. On vehicles with push button start, push and
hold the ignition until the engine turns
OFF.
4. Wait approximately 30 seconds.
5. Restart the engine.
6. Shift into the desired gear range. If the problem is no longer detected, the trans -
mission will return to normal operation.
NOTE:
Even if the transmission can be reset, we
recommend that you visit an authorized
dealer at your earliest possible convenience. An authorized dealer has diagnostic equip
-
ment to assess the condition of your trans -
mission. If the transmission cannot be reset,
authorized dealer service is required.
Torque Converter Clutch
A feature designed to improve fuel economy
has been included in the automatic trans -
mission on your vehicle. A clutch within the
torque converter engages automatically at
calibrated speeds. This may result in a
slightly different feeling or response during
normal operation in the upper gears. When
the vehicle speed drops or during some
accelerations, the clutch automatically
disengages.
NOTE:
The torque converter clutch will not engage
until the engine and/or transmission is warm
(usually after 1 to 3 miles [2 to 5 km] of
driving). Because the engine speed is higher
when the torque converter clutch is not
engaged, it may seem as if the transmission
is not shifting properly when the vehicle is
cold. This is normal. The torque converter
clutch will function normally once the power -
train is sufficiently warm.
WARNING!
Do not downshift for additional engine
braking on a slippery surface. The drive
wheels could lose their grip and the
vehicle could skid, causing a collision or
personal injury.

Manual Transmission — If Equipped
Fluid Level Check
Check the fluid level by removing the fill
plug. The fluid level should be between the
bottom of the fill hole and a point not more
than 3/16 inch (4.7 mm) below the bottom
of the hole.
Add fluid, if necessary, to maintain the
proper level.
Please see your authorized dealer for service.
Automatic Transmission
Selection Of Lubricant
It is important to use the proper transmission
fluid to ensure optimum transmission perfor-
mance and life. Use only the manufacturer's
specified transmission fluid. Refer to “Fluids
And Lubricants” in “Technical Specifica -
tions” for fluid specifications. It is important
to maintain the transmission fluid at the
correct level using the recommended fluid.
NOTE:
No chemical flushes should be used in any
transmission; only the approved lubricant
should be used.
Special Additives
The manufacturer strongly recommends
against using any special additives in the transmission. Automatic Transmission Fluid
(ATF) is an engineered product and its
performance may be impaired by supple
-
mental additives. Therefore, do not add any
fluid additives to the transmission. Avoid
using transmission sealers as they may
adversely affect seals.
Fluid Level Check
The fluid level is preset at the factory and
does not require adjustment under normal
operating conditions. Routine fluid level
checks are not required; therefore the trans -
mission has no dipstick. An authorized
dealer can check your transmission fluid
level using special service tools. If you notice
fluid leakage or transmission malfunction,
visit an authorized dealer immediately to
have the transmission fluid level checked.
Operating the vehicle with an improper fluid
level can cause severe transmission damage.
Overfilling the brake fluid reservoir can
result in spilling brake fluid on hot
engine parts, causing the brake fluid to
catch fire. Brake fluid can also damage
painted and vinyl surfaces, care should
be taken to avoid its contact with these
surfaces.
Do not allow petroleum based fluid to
contaminate the brake fluid. Brake seal
components could be damaged, causing
partial or complete brake failure. This
could result in a collision.
WARNING! (Continued)
CAUTION!
Using a transmission fluid other than the
manufacturer’s recommended fluid may
cause deterioration in transmission shift
quality and/or torque converter shudder.
Refer to “Fluids And Lubricants” in
“Technical Specifications” for fluid
specifications.
CAUTION!
Do not use chemical flushes in your
transmission as the chemicals can damage
your transmission components. Such
damage is not covered by the New Vehicle
Limited Warranty.
