WHAT IS A HYBRID ELECTRIC
VEHICLE
A hybrid vehicle has an electric motor and ahigh voltage battery combined with agasoline engine.
HOW DOES A HYBRID ELECTRIC
VEHICLE WORK
The hybrid vehicle combines electric andgasoline propulsion to provide optimalperformance and improved efficiency.
HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE
DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS
The gasoline engine starts and stops toprovide power when required and to savefuel when not needed. When coasting at lowspeeds, coming to a stop or standing, thegas engine normally shuts down and yourvehicle operates in electric-only mode.
Conditions that may cause the gasolineengine to start or remain running include:
•Considerable vehicle acceleration.
•Driving uphill.
•The high voltage battery charge level islow.
•Heating or cooling the vehicle interior inhigh or low outside temperatures.
•The gasoline engine is below normaloperating temperature.
•Towing a trailer.
•Certain selectable drive modes couldcause the engine to run. See Selectinga Drive Mode (page 338).
Your hybrid vehicle also comes with standardhydraulic braking and regenerative braking.Regenerative braking is performed by yourtransmission and captures brake energy andstores it in the high voltage battery.
You could also notice that your enginecontinues to run instead of shutting off duringextended downhill driving. The engine stayson during this engine braking but is not usingany fuel.
You could also hear a slight whine or whistlewhen operating your vehicle. This is thenormal operation of the electric motor in thehybrid system.
Note:Having your engine running is notalways an indication of inefficiency. In somecases, it is actually more efficient thandriving in electric mode.
HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE
INDICATORS
When you start your vehicle, agreen READY indicator lightappears in the instrument clusterletting you know that your vehicle is readyfor driving.
The engine may not start because yourvehicle has a silent key start feature. Thisfuel saving feature allows your vehicle to beready to drive without requiring the gasengine to be running.

FUEL QUALITY
SELECTING THE CORRECT FUEL
Your vehicle operates on regular unleadedgasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2octane rating of 87.
Some fuel stations, particularly those in highaltitude areas, offer fuels posted as regularunleaded gasoline with an octane ratingbelow 87. The use of these fuels could resultin engine damage that will not be coveredby the vehicle Warranty.
For best overall vehicle and engineperformance, premium fuel with an octanerating of 91 or higher is recommended. Theperformance gained by using premium fuelis most noticeable in hot weather as well asother conditions, for example when towinga trailer. See Towing a Trailer (page 388).
Do not be concerned if the enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if theengine knocks heavily while using fuel withthe recommended octane rating, contact anauthorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.
We recommend Top Tier detergentgasolines, where available to help minimizeengine deposits and maintain optimal vehicleand engine performance.
For additional information, visitwww.toptiergas.com.
Note:Use of any fuel for which the vehiclewas not designed can impair the emissioncontrol system, cause loss of vehicleperformance, and cause damage to theengine which may not be covered by thevehicle Warranty.
Do not use:
•Diesel fuel.
•Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
•Fuel containing more than 15% ethanolor E85 fuel.
•Fuels containing methanol.
•Fuels containing metallic-based additives,including manganese-based compounds.
•Fuels containing the octane boosteradditive, methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
•Leaded fuel, using leaded fuel isprohibited by law.
The use of fuels with metallic compoundssuch as methylcyclopentadienyl manganesetricarbonyl, which is a manganese-based fueladditive, will impair engine performance andaffect the emission control system.
LOCATING THE FUEL FILLER
FUNNEL
The fuel filler funnel is under the luggagecompartment floor covering.

WHAT IS REVERSE BRAKING
ASSIST
Reverse braking assist is designed to reduceimpact damage or assist in avoiding acollision while in reverse (R). Using sensorson the rear of the vehicle, it can detect apossible collision and apply the brakes. If fullbraking occurs, the system attempts to stopthe vehicle a safe distance from the obstacle.
HOW DOES REVERSE BRAKING
ASSIST WORK
Reverse braking assist functions when inreverse (R) and traveling at a speed of1–7 mph (2–12 km/h).
If the system detects an obstacle behind yourvehicle, it provides a warning through therear parking aid or cross traffic alert system.
REVERSE BRAKING ASSIST
PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: You are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle at all times. Thesystem is designed to be an aid and doesnot relieve you of your responsibility todrive with due care and attention. Failureto follow this instruction could result in theloss of control of your vehicle, personalinjury or death.
