PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ride withyour seatback upright and the lap belt snugand low across the hips.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury,make sure children sit where they can beproperly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passenger holda child on his or her lap while your vehicle ismoving. The passenger cannot protect thechild from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided.
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriously injuredor killed. Do not allow people to ride in anyarea of your vehicle that is not equipped withseats and safety belts. Be sure everyone inyour vehicle is in a seat and using a safetybelt properly.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a safety belt.
WARNING: Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specific safety beltassembly which is made up of one buckleand one tongue that are designed to be usedas a pair. 1) Use the shoulder belt on theoutside shoulder only. Never wear theshoulder belt under the arm. 2) Never swingthe safety belt around your neck over theinside shoulder. 3) Never use a single beltfor more than one person.
WARNING: When possible, all children12 years old and under should be properlyrestrained in a rear seating position.
WARNING: Safety belts and seats canbecome hot in a vehicle that has been closedup in sunny weather; they could burn a smallchild. Check seat covers and buckles beforeyou place a child anywhere near them.
WARNING: Front and rear seatoccupants, including pregnant women,should wear safety belts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in this vehicle have lapand shoulder safety belts. All occupants ofthe vehicle should always properly wear theirsafety belts, even when an airbagsupplemental restraint system is provided.
The safety belt system consists of:
•lap and shoulder safety belts
•shoulder safety belt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver safety belt)

How to Disengage the Automatic LockingMode
Unbuckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt and allow it to retract completely todisengage the automatic locking mode andturn on the vehicle sensitive (emergency)locking mode.
How to Extract Seatbelts in the RearOutermost Positions
Seatbelts in the rear outermost positions canlock if you firmly return the seat backrest toits upright position. You can unlock theseatbelts using the following procedures.
For vehicles where the rear seats recline:
1. Recline the seat to its full rear reclineposition.
2. The seatbelt should then unlock.
3.Return the seat backrest to your desiredupright position.
For vehicles with rear seats that do notrecline or are locked with the seat in its fullrear recline position:
1.Grasp the seatbelt webbing at the top ofthe seat backrest.
2.Pull the seatbelt webbing forward, firmly.
3. After pulling the seatbelt forward, allowthe seatbelt to feed back into the seatbeltretractor as much as possible. Ifnecessary, press the seat backrest downto allow the seatbelt webbing to retractfurther.
4. The seatbelt should then unlock.
5. If the seatbelt does not unlock, repeatsteps 1-3.
SEATBELT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
WARNING: Position the seatbelt heightadjuster so that the belt rests across themiddle of your shoulder. Failure to adjust theseatbelt properly could reduce theeffectiveness of the seatbelt and increasethe risk of injury in a crash.
To adjust the shoulder belt height, squeezethe button and slide the height adjuster upor down. Release the button and pull downon the height adjuster to make sure it islocked in place.
SEATBELT WARNING LAMP AND
INDICATOR CHIME
This lamp illuminates and anindicator chime will sound if thedriver seatbelt has not beenfastened when the vehicle's ignition is turnedon.

•Driver and passenger airbag modules.
•Front passenger sensing system.

Proper Driver and Front PassengerSeating Adjustment
WARNING: National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (NHTSA) recommendsa minimum distance of at least 10 in (25 cm)between an occupant's chest and the driverairbag module.
To properly position yourself away from theairbag:
•Move your seat to the rear as far as youcan while still reaching the pedalscomfortably.
•Recline the seat slightly (one or twodegrees) from the upright position.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seatback, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash is greatlyincreased.
Children and Airbags
WARNING: Airbags can kill or injure achild in a child restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. If you must use a forward-facing childrestraint in the front seat, move the seat uponwhich the child restraint is installed all theway back.
Children must always be properly restrained.Accident statistics suggest that children aresafer when properly restrained in the rearseating positions than in the front seatingposition. Failure to follow these instructionsmay increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Note:When the passenger airbag statusindicator OFF light illuminates, the passenger(seat mounted) side airbag may be disabledto avoid the risk of airbag deploymentinjuries.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
If you think that the status of the passengerairbag off indicator lamp is incorrect, checkfor the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in the listabove.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 53).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat, or cargo interferingwith the seat.
If there are lodged objects, or cargo isinterfering with the seat, take the followingsteps to remove the obstruction:
•Pull the vehicle over.
•Switch the vehicle off.
•Driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for any objects lodged underneaththe front passenger seat or cargointerfering with the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart the vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light remainsilluminated, this may or may not be aproblem due to the front passengersensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.

SIDE AIRBAGS
WARNING: Do not place objects ormount equipment on or near the airbagcover, on the side of the seatbacks (of thefront seats), or in front seat areas that maycome into contact with a deploying airbag.Failure to follow these instructions mayincrease the risk of personal injury in theevent of a crash.
WARNING: Do not use accessory seatcovers. The use of accessory seat coversmay prevent the deployment of the sideairbags and increase the risk of injury in anaccident.
WARNING: Do not lean your head onthe door. The side airbag could injure youas it deploys from the side of the seatback.
WARNING: Do not attempt to service,repair, or modify the airbag, its fuses or theseat cover on a seat containing an airbag asyou could be seriously injured or killed.Contact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible.
WARNING: If the side airbag hasdeployed, the airbag will not function again.The side airbag system (including the seat)must be inspected and serviced by anauthorized dealer. If the airbag is notreplaced, the unrepaired area will increasethe risk of injury in a crash.
The side airbags are located on the outboardside of the seatbacks of the front seats. Incertain sideways crashes, the airbag on theside affected by the crash will be inflated.The airbag was designed to inflate betweenthe door panel and occupant to furtherenhance the protection provided occupantsin side impact crashes.
The system consists of the following:
•A label or embossed side panelindicating that side airbags are fitted toyour vehicle.
•Side airbags located inside the driver andfront passenger seatbacks.
•Front passenger sensing system.

WARNING: To reduce risk of injury, donot obstruct or place objects in thedeployment path of the airbag.
WARNING: If a supplementary restraintsystem component has deployed, it will notfunction again. Have the system andassociated components inspected as soonas possible. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
The Safety Canopy deploys during significantside crashes or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor. The Safety Canopy is mounted tothe roof side rail sheet metal, behind theheadliner, above each row of seats. In certainsideways crashes or rollover events, theSafety Canopy will be activated, regardlessof which seats are occupied. The SafetyCanopy is designed to inflate between theside window area and occupants to furtherenhance protection provided in side impactcrashes and rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags above thetrim panels over the front and rear sidewindows identified by a label or wordingon the headliner or roof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 53).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.
The design and development of the SafetyCanopy included recommended testingprocedures that were developed by a groupof automotive safety experts known as theSide Airbag Technical Working Group. Theserecommended testing procedures helpreduce the risk of injuries related to thedeployment of side airbags (including theSafety Canopy).

POWER LIFTGATE
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriously injuredor killed. Do not allow people to ride in anyarea of your vehicle that is not equipped withseats and seatbelts. Make sure everyone inyour vehicle is in a seat and properly usinga seatbelt. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Make sure that you fullyclose the liftgate to prevent exhaust fumesfrom entering your vehicle. If you are unableto fully close the liftgate, open the air ventsor the windows to allow fresh air to enteryour vehicle. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Keep keys out of reach ofchildren. Do not allow children to operate orplay near an open or moving power liftgate.You should supervise the operation of thepower liftgate at all times.
Note: Make sure that you close the liftgatebefore operating or moving your vehicle,especially in an enclosure, like a garage ora parking structure. This could damage theliftgate and its components.
Note: Do not hang anything, for example abike rack, from the glass or liftgate. Thiscould damage the liftgate and itscomponents.
The liftgate only operates with thetransmission in park (P).
Three warning tones sound as the liftgatebegins to power close. One short chimeindicates a problem with the open or closerequest, caused by:
•The ignition is on and the transmissionis not in park (P).
•The battery voltage is below theminimum operating voltage.
•The vehicle speed is at or above 3 mph(5 km/h).
If the liftgate starts to close after it has fullyopened, this indicates there may beexcessive weight on the liftgate or a possiblestrut failure. A repetitive chime sounds andthe liftgate closes under control. Remove anyexcessive weight from the liftgate. If theliftgate continues to close after opening,have the system checked by an authorizeddealer.

WARNING: Make sure all persons areclear of the power liftgate area before usingthe power liftgate control.

MAX A/C

Press to switch the air conditioning on or off.Use A/C with recirculated air to improvecooling performance and efficiency.
Note:In certain conditions (for example,maximum defrost), the air conditioningcompressor may continue to operate eventhough you switch off the air conditioning.
Recirculated Air
Press to switch between outside air andrecirculated air. The air currently in thepassenger compartment recirculates. Thismay reduce the time needed to cool theinterior (when used with A/C) and reduceunwanted odors from entering your vehicle.
Note:Recirculated air may turn off (orprevent you from switching on) in all air flowmodes except MAX A/C to reduce the riskof fogging. Recirculation may also turn onand off in various air distribution controlcombinations during hot weather in order toimprove cooling efficiency.

Press to cycle through the various heatsettings and off. See Heated Seats (page145).
Climate Controlled Seats (If Equipped)
Press to cycle through the various settingsand off. See Climate Controlled Seats (page147).

Climate Control

Dual
Press to switch on temperature control forthe right-hand side of the vehicle. When dualzone is off, right-hand temperature settingsremain the same as the left-hand settings.
Auto
Press to switch on automatic operation.Adjust to select the desired temperature. Fanspeed, air distribution, air conditioningoperation, and outside or recirculated airadjust to heat or cool the vehicle to maintainthe desired temperature. You can also switchoff dual zone mode by pressing and holdingfor more than two seconds.
Power
Press to switch the system on and off. Whenthe system is off, it prevents outside air fromentering the vehicle.
Defrost
Press to distribute air through the windshieldair vents and de-mister. Air directed to theinstrument panel and footwell air vents turnsoff. You can also use this setting to defogand clear the windshield of a thin coveringof ice.
Heated Rear Window
Press to switch the heated rear window onand off. See Heated Rear Window (page135).
HINTS ON CONTROLLING THE
INTERIOR CLIMATE
General Hints
Note:Prolonged use of recirculated air maycause the windows to fog up.
Note:You may feel a small amount of airfrom the footwell air vents regardless of theair distribution setting.
Note:To reduce humidity build-up insideyour vehicle, do not drive with the systemswitched off or with recirculated air alwaysswitched on.
Note:Do not place objects under the frontseats as this may interfere with the airflowto the rear seats.
Note:Remove any snow, ice or leaves fromthe air intake area at the base of thewindshield.
Note:To improve the time to reach acomfortable temperature in hot weather,drive with the windows open until you feelcold air through the air vents.
Automatic Climate Control
Note:Adjusting the settings when yourvehicle interior is extremely hot or cold is notnecessary.
Note:The system adjusts to heat or cool theinterior to the temperature you select asquickly as possible.
Note:For the system to function efficiently,the instrument panel and side air ventsshould be fully open.
