It is preferable totranspo rta baby or a small
ch ild in a suitable rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem. In this case, thech ild sits in the oppo‐
site direction tothe direction of tr avel and faces
ba ckwa rds.
Babies and small children ha vecompa ratively
we ak neck muscles in relation tothe size and we
ight of their head. The risk of injury tothe cer‐
vical spine during an accident can be reduced in
a re ar wa rd-facing child restra int sy stem.

Child restra int sy stems or their retaining sys‐

an accident may not be able toper form their

It may be the case that thech ild cannot be

aged or in volved in an accident. #

ve hicle in motion, forex ample by:
R releasing the parking brake.
R change the transmission position.

used if theve hicle and vehicle seat are lis ted

Obser vethe suitability of vehicle seats
Depending on the appr oval categor y,there are

Electronic devices on the front passenger
seat may impair the function of the auto‐
matic child seat recognition, forex ample:
R notebook
R mobile phone
R transponder card, such as ski pass or
access pass
The front passenger front airbag could
deploy unintentionally or not function as
intended in theeve nt of an accident. #
Do not place any of the devices men‐
tioned abo veor similar devices on the
front passenger seat. #
Ensure, bo thbefore and during the jour‐
ne y,that thest atus of the front
passenger airbag is cor rect. &
WARNING Risk of injury or death dueto
re mo val of a seat cushion
If yo ure mo vea seat cushion, automatic child
seat recognition on the front passenger seat
will no longer function.
Therefore, the front passenger front airbag
will deploy during an accident even if a spe‐
cial rear wa rd-facing child restra int sy stem is
fi tted. #
Neverre mo vea seat cushion. The sensor sy
stem forth e automatic child seat
re cognition on the front passenger seat de tects
whe ther a special Mercedes-Benz child restra int
sy stem with transponders forth e automatic
ch ild seat recognition has been fitted. The
PA SSENGER AIR BAG ON and PASSENGER AIR
BA G OFF indicator lamps light up simul taneously
fo r appro ximately six seconds when the ignition
is switched on. The sy stem car ries out a self-
te st. If
th e front passenger front airbag is disabled by
th e automatic child seat recognition, thefo llow‐
ing remain enabled on the front passenger side:
R the side impact airbag
R the window airbag
R the seat belt tensioner &

th e front passenger airbag is enabled
If yo u secure a child in a child restra int sys‐
te m on the front passenger seat and the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is lit,
th e front passenger airbag can deploy in the
eve nt of an accident.
The child could be stru ck bythe airbag. #
Inthis case, alw ays ensure that the
front passenger airbag is disabled. The
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp must be lit.
NEVER use a rear wa rd-facing child restra int
sy stem on a seat with an ENABLED FRONT Occupant saf

pr otective function.
A person in the front passenger seat could
th en, forex ample, come into con tact with
th eve hicle's interior, especially if the person
is sitting too close tothe dashboard. #
Inthis case the front passenger seat
may not be used. #
Only tr avel with a child who is sitting in
a re ar wa rd-facing or forw ard-facing
ch ild restra int sy stem on the front
passenger seat. #
Alw ays obser vethe information on suit‐
able positioning of thech ild restra int sy
stem in this Owner's Manual in addi‐
tion tothech ild restra int sy stem manu‐

If yo u secure a child in a forw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem on the front passenger seat
and you position the front passenger seat too
close tothe cockpit, in theeve nt of an acci‐
dent, thech ild could:
R come into con tact with parts of theve hi‐
cle's interior if thePA SSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp is lit, forex ample.
R bestru ck bythe airbag if thePA SSENGER
AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is lit. #
Alw ays mo vethe front passenger seat
as far back as possible. Alw ays make
sure that the shoulder belt stra p is cor‐
re ctly routed from the belt loop on the
ve hicle tothe shoulder belt guide on
th ech ild restra int sy stem. The shoulder belt
stra p must be routed forw ards and
down wards from the belt loop. #
Alw ays obser vethe information on suit‐
able positioning of thech ild restra int

front passenger airbag:
R Ifth e sensor sy stem forth e automatic child
seat recognition on the front passenger seat
has de tected a special Mercedes-Benz child
re stra int sy stem with a transponder, the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
lights up. The front passenger airbag is disa‐
bled. It will then not be deplo yed in theeve nt
of an accident.
R If an occupant is de tected on the front
passenger seat, thePA SSENGER AIR BAG ON
indicator lamp lights up. The front passenger
airbag is enabled. The PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp does not light up. If, in
th eeve nt of an accident, all deploy ment cri‐
te ria are met, the front passenger airbag is
deplo yed.
