Operating system
You can operate your telephone using the
functions in theTELmenu, provi ded it is
connected to the Mercedes-Benz hands-
free system and is switch edon.
6 Switch on the telephone and
COMAND* system or the audio sys-
tem. For notes on how to do this, see
the separate Operating Instructions.
6 Press the ÿorè button on the
steering wheel repeat edly until you see
the
TELmenu inthe displ ay.
You will see different messages in the dis-
play, depending on the status of the tele-
phone:
! If the telephone is switched off and:
!there is an audio system installed,
the
TELO FFmessage appe ars in
the display
! there is a COMAND* system
installed, the
TE LO FFmessage
appears in the display !
If you have not yet enter eda PIN and:
! there is an audio syste minstalled,
the
TEL PINmessage appears inthe
display
! there is a COMAND* system
installed, the
Tel. Enter PINmes-
sage appears in the display
6 Enter the PIN using the telephone,
Linguatronic* or the COMAND*
system.
The telephone searches for a net-
work. The display remains empty
during this ti me.
! As soon as the telephone has found a
network, this is reported in the disp lay.

Once it has shown its operational read i-
ness, you can operate the telephone using
the operating system.

your telephone is ready to receive calls.

Dialling a number from the telephone book
You may select and dial a number from the
telephone book at any time provided your
telephone is ready to receive calls.

6 Press the jork button. The operating system reads the tele-
phone book stored on the SIM card or
in the telephone. This could take up to
30 seconds. If there is:

the display
6 Press the jork button repea t-
edl yuntil the name you are looki ng for
appears in the display.
The stored names are displayed alpha-
betically from A to Z, or Z to A.

button stops the rapid scroll.

When the selector lever is in position D,
you can influence the gearshifts made by
the automatic transmissi onby:

Automatic transmission*
When the selector lever isin position D,
you can perform gearshi fts yourself, even
in vehicles wit hautom atic transmission. Downshift
ing
6 Press the selector lever briefly to the
left, towards D–.
Th e automatic transmission shifts to
the next gear down from the gear cur-
rently selected. Doing this also
restricts the shift range ( =page 140).
i The automatic transmission does not shift
down ifyou press the selector lever briefly
towar dsD– and the speed of the vehicle is too
high. Theengine could otherwise overrev. Upshifting

The automatic transmission shifts to
the next gear up, depending on the
gearshift program. Doing this also
extends the shift range. Derestricting the shift range

The automatic transmission shifts to a
range which allows easy acceleration
and deceleration. To do this, the auto-
matic transm ission shifts down one or
more gears. When the selector lever is in position
D,
you can restrict or derestrict the shift
range for the automatic transmission.
6 Press the select or lever briefly to the
ri ght to D+or to the left to D–.
The shift range set isdisplayed in the
speedometer.
i Ifth e maximum engine speed for the shift
range is reached and you continue toacce lerat e,
the automatic transmission shifts up, even if the
shif trange has been restricted. The engine could

matic shifting is deactivated. The shift
range is not restricted.
When the selector lever is in position D,
you can shift up or down manually through
the individual gears. The gear curr ently
selected and engaged is shown in the
speedometer displ ay.
Upshifting
! In manual gearshift pr ogram M,the auto-
matic transmi ssion doe snot shift up eve nif the
engine speed reaches the overrevving range.
Wh enthe max imum perm issibl e speed forthe
current gear isreached, the fuel supply iscut off
to prevent th eengine fro moverrevving. You
must make sure th atthe engine speed does not
reach the red area in the rev counter. There is
otherwise a danger of engine damage.

If you brake or come to a halt without chang-
ing to a lower gear, the automatic tra nsmission
will shift down to a gear from which you can
acce lerate or pull away easily.

It is not possible to use kickdo wnin man-
ual gearshift program M.
