XInsert mechanical key ; into the lock
cylinder.
XTurn mechanical key ; counterclockwise
to position 1 until the locking knob moves
up.
The driver’s door is unlocked.
XRemove mechanical key ;.XPress lock cylinder and pull on door handle
to open the driver’s door.
Unlocking the tailgate
GWarning!
The tailgate swings open to one side. Always
make sure there is sufficient clearance for the
tailgate.
Make sure the tailgate is closed when the
engine is running and while driving. Among
other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO)
gases may enter vehicle interior resulting in
unconsciousness and death.
XInsert mechanical key = into the lock
cylinder.
XTurn mechanical key = counterclockwise
to position 2.
XRemove mechanical key =.XPress lock cylinder and pull on door
handle : to open the tailgate.
Locking the vehicle
If you cannot lock the vehicle with the
SmartKey, lock it as follows:
XOpen the driver’s door.XClose the front passenger door, the rear
doors, and the tailgate.
XPress the central locking switch
(Y page 63).
The locking knobs of the front passenger
door, the rear doors, and the tailgate move
down.
XIf the vehicle battery is disconnected or
drained: Press down the locking knobs on
the front passenger door, the rear doors,
and the tailgate.
XExit the vehicle.XClose the driver’s door.XRemove mechanical key ; from the
SmartKey (Y page 228).
XInsert mechanical key ; into the lock
cylinder.
XTurn mechanical key ; clockwise to
position 1.
The vehicle is locked.
XTurn mechanical key ; back and remove
it from the lock cylinder.
XCheck if the tailgate is locked.XIf necessary, lock the tailgate with the
mechanical key (Y page 64).
iThis procedure does not arm the anti-
theft alarm system, nor does it lock the fuel
filler flap.

Manually unlocking the gear selector
lever
If the vehicle’s electrical system is
malfunctioning, the gear selector lever could
remain locked in park position P. In this case
the gear selector lever can be unlocked
manually, e.g. to tow the vehicle.
XEngage the parking brake.XInsert suitable tool : (e.g. a ball point pen)
into the covered opening.
XSimultaneously push tool : downward
and move the gear selector lever out of
park position P.
XRemove tool :.
The gear selector lever is unlocked.
The cover returns to its closed position after
moving the gear selector lever to the
positions D+ and D-.
iThe gear selector lever is locked again as
soon as you move it back to park position
P.
Fuel filler flap
GWarning!
Avoid contact with the vehicle walls as they
may contain sharp edges. Otherwise, you
could injure yourself while releasing the fuel
filler flap.
In case the central locking system does not
release the fuel filler flap, you can open it
manually.
The fuel filler flap release is located on the
passenger side in the cargo compartment
behind the side trim panel.
XOpen the tailgate (Y page 63).XRemove edge protection : in direction of
arrow ;.
iBefore removing side trim panel =
completely, the electrical connectors must
be disconnected.
XPull off side trim panel = in direction of
arrow ? so the electrical connectors are
accessible.
XDisconnect the electrical connectors.XRemove side trim panel = completely.XPull fuel filler flap release A upwards in

Opening/closing manually
Power tilt/sliding sunroof
You can open or close the power tilt/sliding
sunroof manually should an electrical
malfunction occur.
The power tilt/sliding sunroof drive is located
on the driver’s side in the cargo compartment
behind the side trim panel.
XOpen the tailgate (Y page 63).XRemove edge protection : in direction of
arrow ;.
iBefore removing side trim panel =
completely, the electrical connectors must
be disconnected.
XPull off side trim panel = in direction of
arrow ? so the electrical connectors are
accessible.
XDisconnect electrical connectors.XRemove side trim panel = completely.ASocket wrenchXTake the tool bag out of its storage
compartment (Y page 200).
XTake socket wrench A out of the tool bag.XClosing/raising: Turn socket wrench A
clockwise.
XOpening/lowering: Turn socket wrench
A counterclockwise.
XConnect electrical connectors.XReinstall side trim panel =.
Shackles B in side trim panel = must be
hooked in side wall C.

Brush guard (USA only)

GWarning!
The brush guard is designed solely to enhance
the appearance of the vehicle and help
protect grille and headlights from minor
mishaps, either on- or off road.
Since the safety characteristics are limited in
the event of an accident, brush guard are not
intended to prevent injury or damage in the
event of an accident. Also check state and
local regulations on installation and use.
Raise and lower brush guard in an open space
with plenty of room.
iOnly lower brush guard to clean
headlamps.
XLowering: While holding brush guard
firmly, open quick lock ; using locking and
unlocking handle :.
XGently lower brush guard until it reaches its
fully lowered position.
XRaising and securing: Flip up brush guard
until it contacts end stop joint ?.
Quick lock stop pin must engage the cross
slot recess in lock =.
XNow turn quick lock ; so that quick
lock ; makes contact with end stop
joint ?.
XLock quick lock ; on both sides of brush
guard using locking and unlocking
handle :.
! Make sure both quick stop pins are
seated fully in lock.
Replacing SmartKey batteries
If the batteries in the SmartKey are
discharged, the vehicle can no longer be
locked or unlocked. It is recommended to
have the batteries replaced at an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.
GWarning!
Batteries contain poisonous and corrosive
substances. Therefore, keep the batteries out
of reach of children.
If a battery is swallowed, seek medical help
immediately.
GWarning!
SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. Check with
your local government’s disposal guidelines.

HazardousWaste/Perchlorate/
index.cfm.
Batteries contain materials that can harm the
environment if disposed of improperly.
Recycling of batteries is the preferred method
of disposal. Many states (USA only) or
provinces (Canada only) require sellers of
batteries to accept old batteries for recycling.
When inserting the batteries, make sure they
are clean and free of lint.

When replacing batteries, always replace
both batteries.
iThe required replacement batteries are
available at any authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center.
Replacement batteries: Lithium, type
CR 2025 or equivalent.
XRemove the mechanical key from the
SmartKey (Y page 228).
XPress mechanical key ; into the SmartKey
opening until battery compartment
cover : opens. Do not keep the cover
shut.
XRemove the battery compartment cover.XPat the SmartKey against the palm of your
hand until battery = falls out.
XInsert the new battery with the positive
terminal (+) facing up. Use a lint-free cloth.
XInsert the tabs of the battery compartment
cover into the housing and press the cover
closed.
XCheck the operation of the SmartKey.
Replacing bulbs
Safety notes
Safe vehicle operation depends on proper
exterior lighting and signaling to a large
degree.
Correct headlamp adjustment is extremely
important. Have headlamps checked and
readjusted at regular intervals and when a
bulb has been replaced. Contact an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for
headlamp adjustment.
GWarning!
Bulbs and bulb sockets can be very hot. Allow
the lamp to cool down before changing a bulb.
Keep bulbs out of reach of children.
Halogen lamps contain pressurized gas. A
bulb can explode if you
Rtouch or move it when hot
Rdrop the bulb
Rscratch the bulb
Wear eye and hand protection.
Because of high voltage in Xenon lamps, it is
dangerous to replace the bulb or repair the
lamp and its components. We recommend
that you have such work done by a qualified
technician.
iSince replacing bulbs is a technically
highly demanding process, we recommend
to have them replaced at an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.
iIf the headlamps or front fog lamps are
fogged up on the inside as a result of high
humidity, driving the vehicle a distance with
the lights on should clear up the fogging.

! Do not replace LEDs or bulbs not
described in this section. You could
otherwise damage the LEDs, the bulbs or
parts of the vehicle. Only have the LEDs and
bulbs replaced at an authorized Mercedes-
Benz Center.

ROnly use 12-volt bulbs of the same type and
with the specified watt rating.
RSwitch the lights off before changing a bulb
to prevent short circuits.
RAlways use a clean lint-free cloth when
handling bulbs.
RYour hands should be dry and free of oil and
grease.
RIf the newly installed bulb does not come
on, contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center.
iMercedes-Benz recommends using
Longlife (LL) bulbs.
Replacing bulbs for front lamps
Before you start to replace a bulb for a front
lamp, do the following:
XSwitch off the ignition.XTurn the exterior lamp switch to position

Bi-Xenon headlampGWarning!
Do not remove the cover for the Bi-Xenon
headlamp. Because of high voltage in Xenon
lamps, it is dangerous to replace the bulb or
repair the lamp and its components. It is
recommended to have such work done by a
qualified technician.
Front fog lamp bulb

XLoosen and remove securing screws :.XRemove front fog lamp trim panel ; in
direction of arrow and the seal.
XLoosen and remove front fog lamp-
securing screws =.
iDo not turn adjusting screw ?. If
adjusting screw ? is turned, the front fog
lamp adjustment must be checked at a
Mercedes-Benz Center.
XRemove front fog lamp A.XHold front fog lamp, gently push onto bulb
socket B, and turn bulb socket B
counterclockwise to its stop.
XPull bulb socket B out of front fog lamp.XPull bulb C out of its bulb socket.XInsert the new bulb into the bulb socket
B.
XHold front fog lamp A, insert bulb socket
B into front fog lamp, and turn bulb socket
B clockwise to its stop.
XInsert front fog lamp A and install and
tighten front fog lamp-securing screws =.
XInstall front fog lamp trim panel ; and the
seal.

Front turn signal lamp bulbXG 55 AMG only: Disengage the turn signal
guard from the clip in the rear and fold it
forward. Make sure the turn signal guard
does not strike painted surfaces.
XLoosen and remove securing screws :.XRemove turn signal lens ;.XPress bulb = gently into the socket, turn
counterclockwise and remove it.
XPress the new bulb gently into the socket
and turn clockwise until it engages.
XReinstall turn signal lens ;.XInstall and tighten securing screws :.
iDo not overtighten securing screws :.
Otherwise turn signal lens ; could be
damaged.
XG 55 AMG only: Remount the turn signal
guard.
Side marker lamp bulb
The following description applies to both, the
front and the rear side marker lamps.

XGently press the new bulb into the bulb
socket and turn clockwise until it engages.

marker lamp housing ;.
XReinstall dust cover =.XReinstall side marker lamp housing ;.XInstall and tighten securing screws :.
iDo not overtighten securing screws :.
Otherwise side marker lamp housing ;

Replacing bulbs for rear lamps
Before you start to replace a bulb for a rear
lamp, do the following:
XSwitch off the ignition.XTurn the exterior lamp switch to position

Removing/installing rear lamp guard
(G 55 AMG only)
XRemove screws ;.XSwivel rear lamp guard : outward. Make
sure the guard does not strike painted
surfaces.
XSwivel rear lamp guard : back after
replacing bulbs and fasten it with
screws ;.
Tail lamp unit XG 55 AMG only: Remove the rear lamp
guard.

Replacing wiper blades
Safety notes
GWarning!
For safety reasons, switch off the wipers and
remove the SmartKey from the starter switch
before replacing a wiper blade. Otherwise, the
wiper motor could suddenly turn on and cause
injury.
