vents If your vehicle is equipped with a roof venti-
lator, you can ventilate and extract air from
the cargo compartment. X
Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock.
X To activate and extract air: press the
upper section of the 00A8switch.
The roof ventilator removes used air from
the cargo compartment.
X To activate and ventilate: press the lower
section of the 00A7switch.
The roof ventilator feeds fresh air into the
cargo compartment.
X To switch off: set the switch to the middle

Battery isolating switch
Important safety notes !
Make sure that the key is in position
0in
the ignition lock and wait at least 20 sec-
onds before disconnecting or connecting
the battery isolating switch. You could oth-
erwise damage electrical system compo-
nents.
You can use the battery isolating switch to
disconnect the power supply to all your vehi- cle's consumers. This will prevent uncontrol-
led battery discharge caused by off-load cur-
rent consumption.
If your vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary
battery in the engine compartment, you will
need to disconnect both batteries. Only then
is the electrical system fully disconnected
from the power supply.
i Only switch the vehicle to de-energized
using the battery main switch if:
R the vehicle is stationary for a lengthy
period
R it is absolutely necessary
After the power supply has been activated,
you will need to reset the side windows
(Y page 79).
Switching off the power supply !
When you clamp the connector under the
accelerator pedal, make sure that the con- nector does not become damaged or dirty.
It may otherwise not be possible to restore
the electrical connection when the parts
are reassembled. Battery isolating switch in the driver's footwell, on
the right-hand side next to the accelerator pedal
X Remove the key from the ignition lock and
wait for about 20 seconds.
X Press button 0044in the direction of the
arrow and hold.
X Pull connector 0043from the earth pin.
X Clamp connector 0043under the accelerator
pedal so that it cannot make contact with
the earth pin.
All starter battery consumers are discon-
nected from the power supply.
Switching on the power supply X
Insert the key into the ignition lock.
X Press connector 0043onto earth pin 0044until
you feel it engage and the lock inhibitor is
released.
Connector 0043must be in full contact with
earth pin 0044.

Visual check of the vehicle exterior X
In particular, check the following compo-
nents on the vehicle, and on the trailer as
necessary:
R license plates, vehicle lighting, turn sig-
nals, brake lamps and wiper blades for
dirt and damage
R tires and wheels for firm seating, correct
tire pressure and general condition
R trailer tow hitch for play and security
The trailer coupling is one of the most
important vehicle parts with regard to
road safety. The separate instructions
issued by the manufacturer pertaining to operation, care and maintenance should
be observed.
X Rectify any noticeable defects before com-
mencing the journey.
Checks in the vehicle Emergency equipment/first-aid kit
X Check the equipment to make sure that it is
accessible, complete and ready for use.
The first aid and breakdown assistance equip-
ment is in the front door stowage compart-
ments and behind the driver's seat.
Vehicle lighting
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock.
X Check the lighting system with the aid of a
second person.
X Replace defective bulbs (Y page 99). Before driving off

WARNING
Objects in the driver's footwell may restrict
the clearance around the pedals or block a
depressed pedal. This jeopardizes the oper-
ating and road safety of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident.
Stow all objects securely in the vehicle so that
they do not get into the driver's footwell.
When using floormats or carpets, make sure
that they are properly secured so that they do not slip or obstruct the pedals. Do not place
several floormats or carpets on top of one
another. G
WARNING
Unsuitable footwear can hinder correct usage of the pedals, e.g.:
R shoes with thick soles
R shoes with high heels
R slippers

Problems with the engine

Please bear in mind that lengthy and frequent starting attempts
will drain the battery.
If the engine does not start after several attempts:
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The engine does not
start.
The starter motor can

and the fuel gage is at
0. The fuel tank has been run dry.
X Refuel the vehicle.
If you drive until the fuel tank is completely empty, air may get into
the fuel system. If the engine does not start after refueling, bleed the fuel system as follows:
X Turn the key to position 2in the ignition for approximately
10 seconds.
X Start the engine continuously for a maximum of 60 seconds.
If the engine does not start:
X Wait approximately 2 minutes.
X Restart the engine continuously for a maximum of 60 seconds.
X If the engine still fails start, do not continue trying to start it.
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The vehicle cannot be
driven at a speed
exceeding 5 mph
(8 km/h).

up. The exhaust gas aftertreatment is faulty, an emission-relevant
malfunction has occurred or the DEF reserve has been used up.
This malfunction or defect can damage the exhaust gas after-
treatment.
X Observe the messages in the display:
R on vehicles without steering-wheel buttons (Y page 200)
R on vehicles with steering-wheel buttons (Y page 211) and
(Y page 211). The engine does not
start.
The starter motor can-

WARNING
Flammable material such as leaves, grass or
twigs may ignite if they come into contact with hot parts of the exhaust system or exhaust
gas flow. There is a risk of fire.
Park the vehicle so that no flammable mate-
rials come into contact with parts of the vehi- cle which are hot. Take particular care not to
park on dry grassland or harvested grain
fields. G
WARNING
If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect, for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect. You will require considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is a risk of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving. G
WARNING
If you leave children unsupervised in the vehi- cle, they could set it in motion by, for example:
R release the parking brake.
R shift the automatic transmission out of the
parking position P.
R start the engine.
In addition, they may operate vehicle equip-
ment and become trapped. There is a risk of
an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
! A moving vehicle can lead to damage to
the vehicle or damage to the drive train.
! When the vehicle is parked, always
remove the key to prevent the battery from becoming discharged. On vehicles with a battery isolating switch,
switch off the power supply if the vehicle isto be out of use for a longer period of time.
Always park your vehicle safely and according
to legal requirements and secure it against
rolling away.
To ensure that the vehicle is properly secured against rolling away unintentionally:
R the parking brake must be firmly applied
R the selector lever must be in position Pand
the key must be removed from the ignition lock
R on steep uphill or downhill gradients, the
front wheels must be turned towards the
curb
R the rear axle must be secured, e.g. with a
wheel chock, on steep uphill or downhill
gradients
Use the wheel chock (Y page 151) to do so.
If you leave the vehicle parked for more than
three weeks:
R connect the batteries to a trickle charger or
R disconnect the vehicle's starter battery or
R switch off the electrical system using the
battery main switch (Y page 137) and
R disconnect the vehicle's auxiliary battery
Otherwise, you need to check the battery's
condition of charge every three weeks, since standby power consumption can drain the
battery. If the battery voltage is lower than
12.2 V, the battery must be charged. Other-
wise, the battery may be damaged by exhaus-
tive discharging.
Be sure to observe the notes on disconnect-
ing and charging the batteries under "Bat-
tery“ (Y page 258). You can obtain informa-
tion about trickle chargers from a qualified
specialist workshop. Parking

Apply the parking brake.
X Turn the key to position 0in the ignition
lock and remove it.
The immobilizer is activated.
X Secure the vehicle to prevent it from rolling
away (Y page 149). Wheel chock
Use the wheel chock or a similar object to
prevent the vehicle from rolling away, e.g.
when parking or changing a wheel. Wheel chock in the load/passenger compartment
X To remove the wheel chock on Cargo
Vans/Passenger Vans: pull restraining
cable 0043down a little and remove it from
retainer 0044.
X Remove the chock.
i When stowing the wheel chock, make
sure that restraining cable 0043is holding it
securely in retainer 0044. Wheel chock to the rear of the chassis on the left
side of the vehicle (example) X
To remove the wheel chock on Cab
Chassis: pull the locking springs down and
remove the wheel chock.
i When stowing the wheel chock, make
sure that it is secured in the retainer with
the locking springs. Parking the vehicle for a long period
If you park your vehicle for longer than
three weeks: R connect the batteries to a trickle charger or
R disconnect the vehicle's starter battery or
R switch off the electrical system using the
battery main switch (Y page 137) and
R disconnect the vehicle's auxiliary battery
Otherwise, you need to check the battery's

Always make sure that the cigarette lighter is
out of reach of children. Never leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. X
To use the cigarette lighter: turn the key
to position 1in the ignition lock.
X Press in cigarette lighter 0043.
The cigarette lighter will pop out automati- cally when the heating element is red-hot.
X Pull the cigarette lighter out of the socket
by its handle. 12 V socket

You can use the 12 V sockets (15 A) for
accessories with a maximum power con-
sumption of 180 W. Youcan connect acces-
sories with a maximum power consumption
of 300 Wto the 12 V socket (25 A) on the
lower section of the center console.
i The sockets are supplied with power even
when the key is removed from the ignition
lock. If accessories, e.g. a coolbox, remain
connected while the engine is not running, the battery will discharge. Mobile phone

WARNING
If you operate information systems and com-
munication equipment integrated in the vehi- cle while driving, you will be distracted from
traffic conditions. You could also lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident.
Only operate the equipment when the traffic
situation permits. If you are not sure that this
is possible, park the vehicle paying attention
to traffic conditions and operate the equip-
ment when the vehicle is stationary.
You must observe the legal requirements for
the country in which you are currently driving when operating mobile phones.
Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 mph
(approximately 50 km/h), your vehicle is
covering a distance of 44 fee t(approximately
14 m) every second. 236
Mobile phoneStowing and features

You and others can suffer health-related dam-
age through electromagnetic radiation. By
using an exterior antenna, a possible health
risk caused by electromagnetic fields, as dis-cussed in scientific circles, is taken into
account. Only have the exterior antenna
installed by a qualified specialist workshop.
We recommend the use of an approved exte-
rior antenna for operating the mobile phone.
Only in this way can optimal mobile phone
reception quality in the vehicle be ensured
and mutual interference between the vehicle
electronics and mobile phones minimized.
Observe the legal requirements for each indi- vidual country. Mobile phone pre-installation
The mobile phone pre-installation includes a
hands-free system integrated into the vehi-
cle. The microphone for the hands-free sys-
tem is installed in the overhead control panel or in the overhead stowage compartment
together with the front interior light.
In order to use the hands-free system, you will
need a special bracket. The Sprinter acces-
sories include brackets for various mobile
phone models.
i Mobile phone brackets which are availa-
ble from various manufacturers on the
open market are not compatible with the
Sprinter telephone system. You can recog- nize suitable holders for your mobile phoneby the imprinted star and the B6 spare part
number on the back of the bracket.
Detailed instructions for use can be found in
the operating instructions for the mobile
phone bracket and in the separate operating
instructions for the mobile phone pre-instal-
lation.
i The mobile phone battery is charged
depending on the condition of charge and
the position of the key in the ignition lock.

Please remember, a navigation system does
not supply information on the load-bearing
capacity of bridges or the overhead clearance
of underpasses. The driver remains responsi- ble for safety at all times.

Important safety notes
Work on the battery, e.g. removing or instal-
ling, requires specialist knowledge and the
use of special tools. Therefore, always have work on the battery carried out at a qualified
specialist workshop. G
WARNING
Work carried out incorrectly on the battery
can lead, for example, to a short circuit and
thus damage the vehicle electronics. This can lead to function restrictions applying to
safety-relevant systems, e.g. the lighting sys-
tem, ABS (anti-lock braking system) or ESP ®
(Electronic Stability Program). The operating
safety of your vehicle may be restricted. You
could lose control of the vehicle, for example:
R braking
R in the event of abrupt steering maneuver
and/or when the vehicle's speed is not
adapted to the road conditions
There is a risk of an accident.
In the event of a short circuit or a similar inci- dent, contact a qualified specialist workshop
immediately. Do not drive any further. You
should have all work involving the battery car-
ried out at a qualified specialist workshop.

WARNING
Electrostatic build-up can lead to the creation of sparks, which could ignite the highly explo-
sive gases of a battery. There is a risk of an
explosion.
Before handling the battery, touch the vehicle body to remove any existing electrostatic
build-up.
The flammable gas mix is produced when the
battery is charged or when the vehicle is
jump-started.
Always make sure that neither you nor the
battery are electrostatically charged. Electro- static charging results, for example, from:
R wearing synthetic clothing
R friction between clothing and the seat 258

dragging or pushing the battery across car-
pet flooring or any other synthetic materi-
als
R rubbing the battery with cloths or towels.
Comply with the following safety precautions
and take protective measures when handling
batteries. Risk of explosion. Explosive oxy-
hydrogen is produced when bat-
teries are being charged. Only
charge batteries in well-ventilated
areas. Fire, open flames and smoking are
therefore prohibited when work-
ing on the battery. Avoid creating
sparks. Battery acid is caustic. Avoid con-
tact with the skin, eyes or clothing. Wear acid-proof protective gloves.
If skin or clothes are splashed with
acid, neutralize the splashes
immediately with soapy water or
an acid neutralizer, and then clean the affected areas with water.
Consult a doctor if necessary. Wear eye protection. When mixing
water and acid, the liquid can
splash into your eyes. Rinse acid
splashes to the eyes immediately
with clean water and contact a
doctor immediately. Keep children at a safe distance.
Children are not able to assess the
dangers posed by batteries and
acid. When handling batteries, observe
the safety precautions and special
protective measures contained in
this Operator's Manual. H
Environmental note Batteries contain dangerous
substances. It is against the
law to dispose of them with
the household rubbish. They
must be collected separately and recycled to protect the
environment.
Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally friendly
manner. Take discharged
batteries to a qualified spe-
cialist workshop or a special
collection point for used bat-
teries.
Observe the following notes:
R Recharge the battery more frequently, if
you:
- predominantly drive short distances
- predominantly drive at low outside tem-
peratures
- park the vehicle longer than
three weeks
In order for the batteries to achieve their
maximum possible service life, they must
always be sufficiently charged.
R When you park the vehicle, remove the key
if you do not require any electrical consum- ers. The vehicle will then use very little
energy, thus conserving battery power.
R When replacing a battery, only use batter-
ies that are recommended for use in
Sprinter vehicles.
R Have the battery removed at a qualified
specialist workshop.
R If you leave your vehicle parked your vehi-
cle longer than three weeks:
- consult a qualified specialist workshop
or
- switch off the power supply using the
battery main switch (Y page 137) or
- disconnect the batteries (Y page 260).
Otherwise, you need to check the battery's condition of charge every three weeks,
since standby power consumption can
drain the battery. If the battery voltage is
