1. Before replacing the battery, remove static electricity from your body by touching a metal grounded object.
2. With the Mitsubishi mark facing you, insert the cloth-covered tip of a flat blade screwdriver into the notch in the remote control transmitter case and use it to openthe case. 3. Remove the old battery.
• The doors cannot be locked or unlocked. • The trunk lid cannot be opened.• The panic alarm cannot be operated.• The indicator light (5) is dim or does not come on.

additional F.A.S.T.-
key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. A maximum of four F.A.S.T.- key can be programmed for your vehicle.  To use the new remote control transmitters, it is necessary to register the key with both theelectronic immobilizer and keyless entry sys- tem. Also refer to “Electronic immobilizer (Anti-theft starting system): Customer F.A.S.T.- key programming” on page 5-27.

NOTE
 Be sure to perform the procedure with the Mitsubishi mark facing you. If the Mitsubi- shi mark is not facing you when you open theremote control transmitter case, the transmit- ter may come out.

Trunk lid 5-38 Features and controls

Press the trunk button (Vehicles with keyless entry system or F.A.S.T.-key) or OPEN switch (Vehicles with F.A.S.T.-key). (See“Keyless entry system” on page 5-7, 5-29 or “Free-hand Advanced Security Transmitter (F.A.S.T.-key)” on page 5-11.) The trunk lid will pop up
slightly. Lift it to
open the trunk.
To open the trunk, pull up the trunk lid release lever, located to the left of the driver’sseat.
Pull the trunk lid downward as illustrated before the trunk lid closes completely. Gently slam the trunk lid from the outside so that it iscompletely closed.
CAUTION Do not stand behind the exhaust pipe when loading and unloading luggage. Heat from the exhaust could lead to burns.

CAUTION Do not use the trunk lid release lever while the vehicle is moving. If the trunk lid is opened, objects in the trunk could fall ontothe road and cause an accident.NOTE
 The trunk area light comes on when the trunk lid is opened, and goes out when it is closed.  The trunk area light remains illuminated for a certain period and then goes off automati- cally. Refer to “Interior light auto-cutout function (dome light and other lights)” onpage 5-164.
To close
CAUTION When closing the trunk lid, always ensure your or other person’s fingers cannot becaught by the trunk lid. Before starting the vehicle, be sure to con- firm that the trunk lid is locked. If the trunk lid opens while driving the vehicle, objects stored in the trunk could fall out onto theroad.

The emergency trunk lid release is designed to provide a way to open the trunk lid from inside the trunk. It was developed to help pre- vent death and serious injuries to childrenwho might become locked inside a vehicle trunk.
The emergency trunk lid release lever (see illustration) is mounted on the trunk lid. The lever glows in the dark after exposure to sunlight. You and your family should familiarize your- selves with the location and operation of the emergency trunk lid release lever. Childrenshould be taught not to play in or aroundvehicles.
To open the trunk from the inside, move the lever (A) in the direction of the arrow on thelever. Push up on the trunk lid to open the trunk and climb out.
NOTE
 Gas struts (A) are installed in the locations illustrated to support the trunk lid. Please observe the following in order to prevent damage or faulty operation. • Do not touch, push or pull the gas struts when closing the trunk lid. • Do not attach any plastic material, tape, etc., to the gas struts. • Do not tie string, etc., around the gas struts. • Do not hang any object on the gas struts.

WA R N I N G Children should never be left unsuper- vised in or around vehicles. Unsupervised children could lock them- selves in an open vehicle or trunk.
 People trapped inside a vehicle or trunk, even if only for a short period of time, can quickly die from suffocation or heat stroke, especially on hot days. Interior temperatures in vehicles can rise in min-utes. Keep your vehicle doors locked and the trunk lid closed when not in use. Keep your vehicle keys away from children.CAUTION When loading the trunk, place your things so that they will not touch the emergency trunk lid release lever when you close the trunk. Theft-alarm system

The alarm will be activated if any of the fol- lowing occur while the vehicle is parked andthe system is armed.  One of the doors is opened without using the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.- key operation. The engine hood or the trunk lid is opened.
When the alarm is activated: 1. The headlights blink on and off for 3 min- utes. After 3 minutes the headlights automati- cally shut off.2. The horn will sound intermittently for 3 minutes.
The alarm can be deactivated in the following ways.  By using the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.-key operation to lock or unlock the door.  Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion.
The system will be disarmed if the following operation is performed.  The ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.  All doors are unlocked by the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.-key opera-tion.

NOTE
 The alarm will continue to operate for 3 min- utes. At the end of that period, the alarm will automatically shut off to save battery power. The system will then
be rearmed until the
proper disarming step is taken.  The alarm will resume if unauthorized actions are taken again, even if the alarm has stopped.  While the alarm is operating, a warning is displayed on the information screen in the multi-information display.Horn sounds! Headlights blink on and off!

Use the following procedure to test the sys- tem: 1. Lower the driver’s window.
2. Arm the system as explained in “Armed stage”. 3. Make sure that the theft-alarm indicator comes on and flashes for approximately20 seconds. 4. Wait a few seconds and then unlock the driver’s side door by using the inside doorlock knob and open the door. 5. Check to be sure that the horn sounds intermittently and the headlights blink onand off when the door is opened.6. Disarm the system by unlocking all doors by the keyless entry system or the F.A.S.T.-key operation.

The main switch located on the driver’s door can be used to operate all door windows. A window can be opened or closed by operat- ing the corresponding switch.Press the switch down to open the window, and pull up the switch to close it. If the driver’s door window switch is fullypressed down/pulled up, the driver’s door window automatically opens/closes com- pletely.
NOTE
 If the UNLOCK button is pressed when all doors are closed and no door is opened within approximately 30 seconds, re-armingwill automatically occur.  The amount of time after unlocking until the vehicle relocks automatically can be adjusted. See an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for details.  Once the system has been disarmed, it can- not be rearmed except by repeating the arm-ing procedure.

NOTE
 Never try to operate the main switch and sub switch in different directions at the same time. This will freeze the window in posi- tion.  Operating the power windows repeatedly with the engine stopped will run down the battery. Use the window switches only whilethe engine is running. WA R N I N G Before operating the power windows, make sure that nothing can be trapped(head, hands, fingers, etc.) in the window.  Never leave the vehicle with the key in the ignition switch.  Never leave a child alone in the vehicle.

Safety mechanism (Driver’s door window only)
WA R N I N G If the safety mechanism is activated three or more times successively, the safetymechanism will be temporarily cancelled. If a hand or head subsequently gets trapped, a serious injury can result. The safety mechanism is deactivated while the switch is pulled up continuously.Therefore be especially careful that hands or head are not trapped in the door win- dow opening. Do not deliberately trap your hands or head in order to activate the safety mecha-nism. Your hands or head could be trapped and personal injury could result.CAUTION The safety mechanism is deactivated just before the door window closes. This allowsthe door window to close completely. There- fore be especially careful that fingers are not trapped in the door window opening.

To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully engage the parking brake,and then move the gearshift lever to 1st (on a uphill) or “R” (Reverse) (on a downhill) posi- tion, for vehicles with a manual transaxle orset the gearshift lever to “P” (PARK) position on Twin Clutch SST vehicles.
When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake and turn the front wheels toward thecurb on a downhill grade, away from the curb on an uphill grade.

To adjust the steering wheel height, releasethe tilt lock lever while holding the steering wheel by hand, and raise or lower the steeringwheel to the desired height. After adjustment, securely lock the lever by pulling it upward.
Parking brake To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and the ignition switch is in the “ON” position, the brake warning light in the instru-ment cluster will come on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.
To release 1- Pull the lever up slightly. 2- Press and hold the button at the end of
the hand grip.
3- Push the lever downward.
CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warning light is off. If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning display will appear onthe information screen in the multi-informa- tion display. If a vehicle is driven without releasing theparking brake, the brakes will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. Warning light Warning display

The objects you see in the mirror will look smaller and farther away than theyappear in a regular flat mirror. Do not use this mirror to estimate the dis- tance of vehicles following you whenchanging lanes.

The outside rearview mirrors can be adjusted when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or “ACC” position.Move the lever (A) to the same side as the mirror you wish to adjust. Press the switch (B) to adjust the mirror posi- tion.
The outside mirror can be folded in toward the side window to prevent damage whenparking in tight locations.

When the rear window defogger switch is pressed with the engine running, the outside rearview mirrors are defogged or defrosted.Current will flow through the heater element inside the mirrors, thus clearing away frost or condensation.
The indicator light (A) will illuminate while the defogger is on. The heater will be turned off automatically in about 20 minutes.

Remove the key at the “LOCK” position. Turn the steering wheel until it is locked. Turn the key to the “ACC” position while moving the steering wheel slightly.
NOTE
 For vehicles with a Twin Clutch SST, the key cannot be removed unless the gearshift lever is set to the “P” (PARK) position, whichallows the ignition switch to turn to the “LOCK” position.CAUTION Do not remove the ignition key from the ignition switch while driving. The steering wheel will lock, causing loss of control. If the engine is turned off while driving, the power brake booster will stop functioning and braking efficiency will be reduced. Also,the power steering system will not function and it will require greater effort to manually steer the vehicle. Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long time when the engine is not running.This will cause the battery to run down.Twin Clutch SST
 Do not turn the key to the “START” position when the engine is running. It will damage the starter motor.
