6. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, makesure the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 7. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warninglights are functioning properly before starting the engine. 8. Turn the ignition switch to the “START”position without pressing the accelerator pedal. Release the key when the engine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start.
1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rear window defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST or the clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, press the accelera-tor pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the enginecould be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi- cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST orthe clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, push the accelera- tor pedal all the way down and hold itthere, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 sec- onds. Return the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position and release the acceler-ator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal or theclutch pedal, but do not push the accelera- tor pedal. Release the ignition key if the engine starts. If the engine fails to start,repeat these procedures. If the engine still will not start, contact your local Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer or a repair facility ofyour choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to start from a standstill even with the gearshift lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position.This phenomenon occurs because the trans- mission has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If it occurs,place the gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK)position and let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transmission will warm up, and you willbe able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

At high altitude locations, the idle speed maybe higher. This is done in order to stabilizethe idle speed when the power steering sys- tem and other systems operate. It does not indicate a malfunction.

For short waiting periods, such as at trafficlights, the vehicle can be left in gearshift lever position and held stationary with theservice brake.For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parkingbrake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped thevehicle, make sure that the gearshift lever is in “D” (DRIVE) position or manual shift position.

If there is a malfunction in the Twin Clutch SST or engine electronic control module, the following may occur.  Twin Clutch SST does not shift.  Vehicle cannot move.  Twin Clutch SST acceleration is slow.  Vehicle does not creep.  “Shift shock” is large.  Shifting occurs at higher engine speed.  Response is slow.
If any of these occurs, perform the following procedure. The temperature of Twin Clutch SST fluid is high. Refer to “Warning display” on page 5-60 and follow the appropriate measures. There could be a malfunction in the engine electronic control module.

CAUTION Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler- ation may occur if the gearshift lever is in a position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Do not keep the vehicle in a stopped position on an uphill slope by depressing the acceler-ator pedal instead of the brake pedal. The transmission may be damaged and an accident may occur due to the following con-ditions.
• The Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature will rise and can cause transmission dam- age.• If the vehicle is kept in a stopped positionby depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal, the vehicle will vibrate or the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display to alert the driver that theTwin Clutch SST fluid temperature has risen. After that, if the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature rises even higher, the transmis- sion protection control will operate. If this occurs, the vehicle may suddenly reverse as if the gearshift lever was in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and cause anaccident. If the warning display appears or the transmission protection control operates, refer to “When warning display is showing” on page 5-60.

A safety device in the Twin Clutch SST has been activated due to a possible malfunctionin the Twin Clutch SST. Refer to “If the gearshift lever position dis- play is not showing” on page 5-60 and follow the appropriate measures. Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine.2. Restart the engine. If the vehicle moves and accelerates normally after this procedure is

Not only does this ensure enhanced handling on dry, paved roads but also permits better traction when driving on slippery, wet orsnow-covered roads and when moving out of mud. These vehicles, however, are not designedfor off-road use, and are unsuitable for driving on bumpy ground that may cause excessive strain.

Since driving torque can
be applied to all four
wheels, the performance of the vehicle whenoperating in all-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5. Be sure to fit all four tires and wheels of the same size and type. When replacement of any of the tires orwheels is necessary, replace all of them.  All tires should be rotated whenever the wear difference between the front and reartires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” onpage 9-18.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

 When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal pulsa- tion and the vibrations of the vehicle body and steering wheel. It may also feel as ifthe pedal resists being pressed. In this situation, simply hold the brake pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.  An operation noise is emitted from the engine compartment or feel a shock fromthe brake pedal when start driving imme- diately after starting the engine. These are normal sound or operation that the anti-lock braking system makes when per- forming a self-check. It does not indicate a malfunction. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed over approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stopsworking when the vehicle slows below approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).

Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Test the system by restarting the engine anddriving at a speed of about 12 mph (20 km/h) or higher. If the warning light / display then remain offduring driving, there is no abnormal condi- tion.
CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully.  To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all 4 wheels and tires are the same size and the same type.

CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drivethe vehicle at moderate speeds.

Brake assist system
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise braking force greater than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance between vehicles in front of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.
NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fullydepressed even if it has not been depressed suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is operating normally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue to depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenly or fully depressedwhile stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.

1. With the ignition switch in the “ON” posi- tion, press the “ON OFF” switch (A) to turn on the cruise control. The “CRUISE” indicator light in the meter cluster willcome on.
2. Confirm that the Twin Clutch SST control mode is set to “Normal”. Refer to “Twin Clutch SST control mode”on page 5-62.
3. Accelerate or decelerate to your desired speed, then press and release the “COAST SET” switch (B) when the “CRUISE” indicator light is illuminated. The vehiclewill then maintain the desired speed.

There are 2 ways to increase the set speed. Press and hold the “ACC RES” switch (C) while driving at the set speed, and your speedwill then gradually increase.
NOTE
 When operating the cruise control switches, press the cruise control switches correctly. The set speed driving may be deactivated automatically if two or more switches of the cruise control are pressed at the same time.
To activate
NOTE
 If the cruise control is on when the ignition switch is turned to “LOCK” or “ACC” posi- tion, cruise control will be on automatically the next time you start the engine. The “CRUISE” indicator light will also be on.  If the battery voltage is insufficient, the memory data for the cruise control may beerased. As a result, the “CRUISE” indicator light may not come on when you restart theengine. If this happens, press the “ON OFF” switch once again to turn on the cruise control.NOTE
 The cruising speed cannot be set when the Twin Clutch SST control mode is set to “Sport” mode or “S-Sport” mode.
NOTE
 When you release the “COAST SET” switch, the vehicle speed will be set.

Also, the set speed driving may be deacti- vated as follow:  When the engine speed rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (the red-colored part of the tachometer dial).

If the set speed driving is deactivated by thecondition described in “To deactivate” onpage 5-84, you can resume the previously set speed by pressing the “ACC RES” switch (C) while driving at a speed of about 25 mph (40km/h) or higher.

WA R N I N G On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, although the set speed driving will be deactivated when shifting to the “N”(NEUTRAL) position, never move the gearshift lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving.You would have no engine braking and could cause a serious accident.
CAUTION When the set speed driving is deactivated automatically in any situation other than those listed above, there may be a system malfunction. Press the “ON OFF” switch to turn off thecruise control and have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice.

When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position, the tire pressure monitoringsystem warning light normally illuminatesand goes off a few seconds later. If one or more of the vehicle tires (except for the spare tire) is significantly under-inflated, the warning light will remain illuminatedwhile the ignition switch is in the “ON” posi- tion. Refer to “If the warning light/display illumi-nates while driving” on page 5-87 and take the necessary measures.
WA R N I N G The spare wheel does not have a tire infla- tion pressure sensor. When the spare tire is used, the tire pres- sure monitoring system will not work properly.See an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon as possible to replace or repair the original tire.NOTE
 The tire pressure monitoring system is not a substitute for regularly checking tire infla- tion pressures. Be sure to check the tire inflation pressures as described in “Tires” on page 9-12.  Each of the grommets and washers where the tire inflation pressure sensors are mounted should be replaced with new ones when thetire is replaced. For details, contact your authorized Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer.

CAUTION If the tire pressure monitoring system warn- ing light does not illuminate when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position, it means that the tire pressure monitoring sys- tem is not working properly. Have the sys-tem inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving. If a malfunction is detected in the tire pres- sure monitoring system, the tire pressuremonitoring system warning light will blink for approximately 1 minute and then remain continuously illuminated. The warning lightwill issue further warnings each time the engine is restarted as long as the malfunction exists.Check to see whether the warning light goes off after few minutes driving. If it then goes off during driving, there is noproblem. However, if the warning light does not go off, or if it blinks again when the engine isrestarted, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. For safety reasons, whenthe warning light appears while driving, avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving.
