All seats are equipped with a seat belt which uses one combined lap-
and-shoulder belt with
an emergency locking retractor. This system is designed to provide both com- fort and safety. It pe
rmits full extension and
automatic retraction of the belts during nor- mal vehicle operation.
A sensing device
inside the belt retractor is designed to lock the retractor in the event of a sudden change inthe vehicle’s motion.
1. Occupants shoul
d always sit back in their
seats with their backs against the uprightseatback. To reduce the risk of serious injury or death during deployment of the airbag, adjust the driver’s seat as far backas possible while maintaining a position that still enables you to fully apply the pedals, easily contro
l the steering wheel,
and safely operate the vehicle. The front passenger seat should
also be moved as
far back as possible. Refer to “Supple- mental Restraint System (SRS) - airbag” on page 4-35. Also refe
r to “To adjust the
seat forward or backward” on page 4-5.

or child in your arms
or on your lap when ri

even when you are wearing your seat belt.Never place any part of the seat belt you are wearing around an
infant or child.

The seat belt pre-tensioners will operate under the same conditions as the airbag con-trol unit. When the seat belt pr
e-tensioners activate,
some smoke is released and a loud noise will be heard. The smoke is
not harmful, but care
should be taken not to in
tentionally inhale it,
as it may cause some temporary irritation to people with respiratory problems.Even in the event of a severe impact, the pre- tensioners will not operate if the seat belts are not fastened. The seat belt pre-tensioners may not activate in certain collisions, even though the vehicle may appear
to be severely dam-
aged. Such non-activation does not mean that something is wrong with
the seat belt pre-ten-
sioner system, but rather that the collisionforces were not severe
enough to activate the
system.

When transporting infants or small children in your vehicle, an appropriate child restraintsystem must always be
used. This is required
by law in the U.S. and Canada. Child restraint systems specifically designedfor infants and small children are offered by several manufacturers
. Choose only a child
restraint system with a label certifying that itcomplies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 (FMVSS 213) or Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats SafetyRegulations (RSSR). Look for the manufac- turer’s statement of compliance on the box and child restraint system itself.

ate for your child’s weight and height, andshould properly fit your
vehicle’s seat.
For detailed information, refer to the instruc- tion manual accompanying the child restraintsystem. All children should be
properly restrained in
a restraint device that
offers the maximum
protection for their size and age as specified by local, state, or provincial laws. Be sure to check local, state, or provincialrequirements for child si
ze and age that may
vary from the recommendations listed below.  Children less than 2 years old and who weigh 22 pounds (10 kg) or less MUSTride in a rear-facing child safety seat that MUST ONLY be used in the second row seat. Children older than 2 years of age and who weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kg) or who are less than 40 inches (100 cm) tallmust be in a forwar
d-facing restraint used
only in the rear seat.
WA R N I N G The seat belt pre-tensioner system is designed to work only
once. After the seat
belt pre-tensioners have been activated, they will not work again. They must promptly be replaced and the entire seatbelt pre-tensioner system inspected by an authorized Mitsubis

retractors for automatic locking when in the Automatic Locking Retractor function. The entire seat belt assembly should be replaced if the webbing shows any obvious
cuts, tears, increase in thickness in any sec- tion of the webbing from broken fibers, orsevere fading from sunl
ight. All of these con-
ditions indicate a we
akening of the belt,
which may adversely affect seat belt perfor-mance in an accident.

Restraint System (SRS), which includes air- bags for the driver and passengers. The SRS front airbags are designed to supple- ment the primary protection of the driver and front passenger seat
belt systems by provid-
ing those occupants wi
th protection against
head and chest injuries
in certain moderate to
severe frontal collisions. The SRS front air-bags, together with sens
ors at the front of the
vehicle and sensors attached to the front seats, form an advanced airbag system. The SRS driver’s knee airbag is designed to supplement the primar
y protection of the
driver’s seat belt system. It can reduce the forward movement of the driver’s lower legsand provide increased
overall body protection
in certain moderate to
severe frontal colli-
sions. The SRS side airbags and the curtain airbags are also designed to supplement the seat belts. The SRS side airbags provide the driver and front passenger with protection against chestinjuries by deploying the bag on the side impacted in moderate
to severe side impact
collisions. The SRS curtain airbags provide

A child should never be left unattended in, or unsupervised around, your vehicle. When you leave the ve

the child out as well. Children can die from heat stroke if left or trapped inside the vehicle, especially onhot days. Keep your vehicle locked when not in use. Keep your vehicle ke

dren.

Never use an organic solvent to clean the seat belt webbing. Do not attempt tobleach or re-dye th
e seat belt webbing.
These may weaken the
seat belt webbing,
increasing risk of in
jury or death in an
accident. Clean seat belt webbing only with mild soap or detergent so
lution and rinse it
with lukewarm water, and dry the seat belt webbing completely before retracting it.

lower legs too close to
the instrument panel, or lean your head or chest close to the steering wheel or the instrument panel. Do not put your feet or legs on or against the instrument panel.

When the impact sensor
s detect a sufficient
front or side impact to deploy the airbag(s),the appropriate airbag
(s) will be deployed.
When the airbag control unit detects rollover of the vehicle, curtain airbags will be deployed. When airbags deploy, some smoke is released accompanied by a loud noise. The smoke is not harmful, but do not
intentionally inhale
the smoke as it may ca
use temporary irrita-
tion to people with respiratory problems. An inflated airbag will deflate quickly, so you may not even notice that the airbag wasinflated. Airbag inflation does not prevent the driver from seeing or being able
to steer the vehicle,
and does not prevent people from leaving the vehicle.

ger seat cushion and provides the airbag con- trol unit with information regarding the occupant on the front passenger seat. The air-bag control unit controls deployment of the passenger’s front airbag

the information it receives from this system. The passenger’s front airbag will not deploy in an impact when the system senses no occu-pant on the front passenge
r’s seat or a child in
a child restraint system. In this case, the pas- senger airbag off indi
cator will come on.

page 4-40. If there is a problem involving the passen-ger’s seat occupant cl

While carrying the F.A.S.T.-key, press thedriver’s or front passenger’s door lock/unlockswitch (A), or the liftgate LOCK switch (B) within the operating range to lock all the doors and the liftgate. The turn signal lights will blink once and the buzzer will sound once. Also refer to “Doors locks”, “Power door locks”, “Liftgate” and “Power liftgate” on pages 5-36, 5-38, 5-40 and 5-42 respectively.
 Even if the F.A.S.T.-key is within about 2.3 feet (70 cm) of the handle of the driver’sdoor, front passenger’s door or liftgate, thesystem may not operate if the key is close to the ground or in a high position.  If the F.A.S.T.-key is within the operating range, even a person not carrying the F.A.S.T.-key can lock and unlock the doorsor the liftgate by pressing the driver’s or front passenger’s door lock/unlock switch, the liftgate LOCK switch or the liftgateOPEN switch.

While carrying the F.A.S.T.-key within the operating range, you can unlock the doorsand the liftgate by using the F.A.S.T.-key operation. The dome light will turn on for 30 seconds.The turn signal lights will blink twice and the buzzer will
sound twice.
Also refer to “Door locks”, “Power door locks”, “Liftgate” and “Power liftgate” onpages 5-36, 5-38, 5-40 and 5-42 respectively. Press the driver’s door lock/unlock switch (A) to unlock only the driver’s door. Within approximately 2 seconds, press thedriver’s door lock/unlock switch one more time to unlock all the
doors and the liftgate.
Press the front passenger’s door lock/unlock switch (B) or the liftgate OPEN switch (C) to unlock all the doors and the liftgate.
NOTE
 On the vehicles equipped with the mirror retractor switch, the out
side rearview mirrors
automatically retract when all doors and lift- gate are locked using the driver’s or front passenger’s door lock/unlock switch (A) orthe liftgate LOCK switch (B).  In cases such as the following, the F.A.S.T.- key does not operate. • There is a F.A.S.T.-key in the passenger compartment • A door or the liftgate is open or ajar• The operation mode
is not in OFF.
 The liftgate OPEN switch (C) can be used to confirm that the vehicl
e is locked properly.
Press the liftgate OPEN switch withinapproximately 3 seconds of locking.  If the liftgate OPEN switch is pressed 3 sec- onds or more after the
vehicle is locked, the
doors and the liftga
te are unlocked.
Liftgate switches
The time within which locking confirmation is possible can be adjusted. See an autho-rized Mitsubishi Motors
dealer for details.
On a vehicle equipped
with the Smartphone-
link Display Audio (SDA
), the function can
be adjusted on the screen. For details, referto the separate owner’s manual.

 Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it. Children who get into unlocked vehicles may not be able to get out. Childrentrapped inside vehicles can quickly be overcome by heat and suffer serious injury or death due to heat stroke. Never leave a child alon
e in the vehicle. In
addition to the risk
of heat stroke, chil-
dren can activate switches and controls, resulting in an injury
or fatal accident.
When closing a door,
make sure that the
door is fully closed and the door-ajar warning display goes out on the informa-tion screen on the multi-information dis- play. If the door is aj
ar it could open while

locked when driving. An unlocked door may be accidentally
opened by a passen-
ger, especially by
a child who could fall
out. Also, if the doors are not locked, there is a greater risk of
someone being thrown
from the vehicle in an accident.
Liftgate (except for vehicles equipped with the power liftgate)
WA R N I N G It is dangerous to drive with the liftgate open since carbon mo
noxide (CO) gas con-
tained in engine exhaust gases can enter the passenger compartment.CO is an invisible,
odorless gas that can
cause unconsciousness and even death. When opening and closing the liftgate, make sure that there are no people nearby and be careful not to hit your head or pinch your hands, neck, etc.
 If snow or ice has ac
cumulated on the lift-
gate, remove it before
opening the liftgate.
Otherwise the liftgate may abruptly closedue to the weight of the snow or ice. When opening the lift
gate, always fully
open it. A partially opened liftgate can unexpectedly close due to its own weight. When the vehicle is parked on a slope, the effort required to open or close the liftgate may be greater or less than expected.The liftgate may also open or close more quickly.CAUTION Do not stand behind the exhaust pipe when loading and unloading
luggage. Heat from
the exhaust could lead to burns. To avoid damage to th
e liftgate, make sure
that area above and
behind the liftgate is
clear before opening it.NOTE
 Locking and unlocking the doors by using power door locks (driver and front passenger side), keyless entry system, or F.A.S.T.-key operation (vehicles equipped with theF.A.S.T.-key) also locks and unlocks the lift- gate.WA R N I N G
