If you drive your vehicl
e with a low battery
charge after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, th
e engine may misfire.
This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on
and off. This is only
due to the low battery voltage. It is not aproblem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the warningwill be displayed in th
e instrument cluster as
follows.The information screen in the multi infor-mation display will be interrupted and theengine coolant temp
erature warning dis-
play will appear. Also “ ” will blink.(Color liquid crystal display type)lamp will illuminate.

If these warnings are displayed:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn onthe hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine st
ill running, carefully
raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment.3. Check that the cooling fan is running. Ifthe fan is not turn
ing, stop the engine
immediately and cont
act an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice for assistance.4. If you see steam or spray coming fromunder the hood, turn off the engine.5. If you do not see steam or spray comingfrom under the hood, leave the engine onuntil the high coolant

ing goes off. After the high coolant tem-perature warning has gone off, you canstart driving again. If the high coolanttemperature warning stays on, turn off theengine.
Charging the battery by using an external battery charger
WA R N I N GAlways remove the
battery from your
vehicle when the battery is charged by anexternal battery charger.Keep sparks, cigarette
s, and flames away
from the battery because the battery couldexplode.Keep your work area well vented whencharging or using
the battery in an
enclosed space.Remove all the caps before charging thebattery.Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro-sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolytecomes in contact with your hands, eyes,clothes, or the pain
ted surface of your
vehicle, thoroughly
flush with water. If
electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush themimmediately and thor
oughly with water,
and get prompt medical attention.Always wear protective clothing and gog-gles when working near the battery.Keep the battery out of the reach of chil-dren.

WA R N I N GWhen checking or servicing the inside ofthe engine compartment, be sure theengine is stopped and has had a chance tocool down.If you need to work
in the engine compart-
ment with the engine running, be espe-cially careful that your clothing, hair, etc.does not get caught in the cooling fans,drive belts, or other moving parts.After performing the maintenance work,make sure that no tools or cloths are leftbehind in the engine compartment.If they are left behind, a fire or damage tothe vehicle may occur.The cooling fans can turn on automati-cally even if the engine is not running.Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”position to be safe while you work in theengine compartment.Do not smoke or allow open flames aroundfuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma-ble.Be extremely careful when workingaround the battery. It
contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid.Do not get under your ve
hicle while it is on
a jack.Always use properly rated automotivejack stands.

Normally, the catalyti
c converter does not
require maintenance. However, it is importantto keep the engine properly tuned for the con-verter to continue to work properly.To reduce the possibili
ty of catalytic con-
verter damage:Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY ofthe type of recommended in the “Fuelselection”.Do not drive with an extremely low fuellevel. Running out of gas could damagethe catalytic converter.
Do not try to start the engine by pushingor towing the vehicle. If the battery isweak or run down, use jumper cables toproperly start the engine.Do not idle the engine with any spark plugwires disconnected or removed, such aswhen performing
diagnosti
c tests.
Do not idle the engine
for a long time if it
is idling roughly or otherwise obviouslymalfunctioning.To prevent the catalytic converter frombeing damaged from unburned gas, do notrace the engine when turning off the igni-tion switch.Stop driving the vehicle if you think theperformance is noticeably low, or theengine has a malfunction such as with theignition, etc. If you are not able to stopdriving immediately,
slow down and drive
for only a short time. Have your vehiclechecked at an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice as soon
as possible.
In unusual situations involving majorengine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalyticconverter overheating.
If this occurs, stop
in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once
the engine is cool,
immediately take
your vehicle to an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice for service.

Use the engine hood release lever (locatedunder the instrument panel near the driver’sdoor) to unlock the engine hood.Pull the lever toward you to release theengine hood latch.

have it serviced promptly. Running yourvehicle when it is
overheated may result in

hot exhaust, since a fire could occur.Do not put undercoat paint on the cata-lytic converter.
Engine hood To open

Do not drive your vehicle unless theengine hood is locked.

Check the fluid leve
l in the reservoir.
The fluid level must
be between the “MAX”
and “MIN” marks on the reservoir.The fluid level falls slightly with wear of thebrake pads, but this
does not indicate any
abnormality.If the fluid level falls sealed tight in a shortlength of time, it indi
cates leaks from the
brake system.If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility
of your choice.
Use the recommended brake fluid conform-ing to DOT 3 or DOT
4. The reservoir cap
must be tightly sealed to keep dirt and waterout.

The condition of the batte
ry is very important
for quick starting and to keep the vehicle’selectrical system work
ing properly. Check the
battery regularly.If battery performance is suspect, have thebattery and charging
system tested by an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility
of your choice.
The electrolyte level
must be between the
limits shown on the outside of the battery. Fillit with distilled water as needed. The inside ofthe battery is divided into several compart-ments. Take the cap off of each compartmentand fill to the mark.
Brake fluid To check the fluid level

painted surfaces.
Wipe up spills immediately.If brake fluid gets on your hands or inyour eyes, flush immediately with cleanwater. Follow up with a doctor as neces-sary.CAUTIONDo not let any petrol
eum-based fluid touch,
mix with, or get into
the brake fluid. This
will damage the seals.Be careful when handli
ng brake fluid. It can
damage painted surfaces.Use only the listed brak
e fluid. Different
brands of brake fluid
have different addi-
tives, and these can cause a chemical reac-tion. Do not mix brands of brake fluid.Keep the reservoir ta
nk cap closed to keep
the brake fluid from evaporating.
Battery
NOTE
After replacing the battery, the electroniccontrol system data for the automatic trans-axle, etc., will be erased.As a result, shifting may be rough.Shifting will become
smoother after several
changes in speed.

during driving could cause damage.The battery is weaker in cold temperatures.This has to do with its chemical and physicalproperties and is why a very cold battery,especially one with a low charge, will have ahard time starting your vehicle.It is recommended that you have your batteryand charging system checked by an autho-rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repairfacility of your choice before the start of coldweather. If necessary, have it charged. Thiswill provide more relia
ble starting, and longer
battery life.To disconnect the battery cable, stop theengine. Disconnect the
negative (-) terminal
first, then the positive (+) terminal. To recon-nect the battery, first
connect the positive (+)
terminal and then the negative (-) terminal,before starting the vehicle.During cold weather Disconnection and connection
NOTE
Open the terminal cover (A) before discon-necting or connecting
the positive (+) termi-
nal of the battery.
Loosen the nut (B) and then disconnect thebattery cable from the positive (+) terminal.WA R N I N GNever disconnect the battery while theengine is running, or you could damagethe vehicle’s electrical parts.Never short-circuit the battery. This couldcause it to overheat and be damaged.Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames awayfrom the battery because the battery couldexplode.Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro-sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills onnearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis-color them. And if it gets on your skin orin your eyes, it can cause burns or blind-ness. Please observe the following han-dling instructions:NOTE
• If electrolyte gets on plastic parts orother nearby parts, wipe it off with a softcloth or chamois soak
ed in a solution of
water and neutral detergent then imme-diately rinse the affected parts withplenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in
your eyes, flush them
with water immediately and get immedi-ate medical attention.
Open doors and wind
ows in any closed
space where you may be charging orworking with the battery.Always wear protective clothing and gog-gles when working with the battery, orhave a skilled automobile technician do it.If you are quick-ch
arging your battery,
first disconnect the battery cables.In order to prevent a
short-circuit, be sure
to disconnect the negative (-) terminalfirst, and reconnect it last.If the electrolyte level
is very low, have the
battery checked at an
authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer or
a repair facility of
your choice.Battery posts, terminals and related acces-sories contain lead
and lead compounds.

It is important to familiarize yourself with thefollowing terms:Cold tire pressure:• The measured pressure after the vehiclehas been parked for
at least three hours,
or• The measured pressure when the vehicleis driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) afterhaving been parked for three hours.
Maximum pressure: the maximum per-missible cold tire inflation pressure forthis tire.Recommended inflation pressure: theinflation pressure for optimum tire perfor-mance.Intended outboard sidewall:• The sidewall that
contains a whitewall,
bears white lettering or bears manufac-turer, brand, and/or model name moldingthat is higher or deeper than the samemolding on the other sidewall of the tire,or
• The outward facing si
dewall of an asym-
metrical tire that has a particular sidethat must always face outward whenmounted on a vehicle.
Passenger car tire: a
tire intended for use
on passenger cars, multipurpose passen-ger vehicles, and trucks
that have a gross
vehicle weight rati
ng (GVWR) of 10,000
pounds or less.Light truck (LT) tire: a tire designated byits manufacturer as primarily intended foruse on lightweight truc
ks or multipurpose
passenger vehicles.Tread: portion of a ti
re that comes into
contact with the road.Tread rib: a tread se
ction running circum-
ferentially around a tire.Tread separation: pulling away of thetread from the tire carcass.Carcass: the tire structure, except treadand sidewall rubber wh

bears the load.Sidewall: portion of
a tire between the
tread and bead.Section width: the lin
ear distance between
the exteriors of th
e sidewalls of an
inflated tire, excluding elevations due tolabeling, decoration,
or protective bands.
Bead: the part of the tire that is made ofsteel wires, wrapped or reinforced by plycords and that is shaped to fit the rim.
NOTE
Check each battery terminal for corrosion.You can prevent further corrosion by wash-ing with a solution of
baking soda and water.
Grease the posts and cl
amps after cleaning or
tightening them.Ensure the battery is securely installed andcannot be moved. Also
check each terminal
for tightness.If you will not be driv
ing your vehicle for a
long period of time, re
move the battery and
store it in a place where the battery fluid willnot freeze. The batter
y only should be stored
with a full charge.Before cleaning the battery, tighten all thefiller port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.
Tires

ated is dangerous.
These type tire conditions will adverselyaffect vehicle performance.These type tire conditions can also cause atread separation or blowout which mayresult in an accident causing seriousinjury or death.
Tires, including spar
e tire, degrade over
time with age even when they are notbeing used.It is recommended that tires over 6 yearsgenerally be replaced
even if damage is

Check the hose surfaces for any heat andmechanical damage, hard and brittle rubber,cracking, tears, cuts and abrasions. Pay spe-cial attention to the hos

diagnosis difficult.
Do not disconnect the
battery cable when the engine malfunctionindicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or“Check engine
light”) is ON.

Use the recommended or equivalent sparkplugs listed under “Engin

page 11-6. Use of other plugs could causeengine damage, loss of performance or radionoise.
