Fuel selection 3-2 General information
3
N00301001919
Your vehicle is designed to use unleaded gas- oline only. It is equipped with a fuel tankfiller pipe especially designed to accept only a small diameter unleaded gasoline dispens- ing nozzle. In the United States, fuel suppliers are required by law to add detergents to their gas-
oline to minimize fuel-injector fouling and minimize intake-valve deposits. Detergent gasoline helps keep your engine in tune and your emission-control system working prop-erly. Your vehicle is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline having a minimum octanenumber of 87 [(MON+RON)/2] or 91 RON. Gasoline sold at some service stations con- tains oxygenates such as ethanol, although the oxygenates may not be identified by those names. Oxygenates are required in someareas of the country. Such fuel can be used in your vehicle. A mixture of up to 10% ethanol (grain alco- hol) and 90% unleaded gasoline may be used in your vehicle, provided the octane numberis at least as high as that recommended for unleaded gasoline.
Do not operate your vehicle on gasoline con- taining methanol (wood alcohol). Using thistype of alcohol could adversely affect the vehicle’s performance and damage critical parts of the vehicle’s fuel system. Many areas of the country require the use of cleaner burning fuel referred to as “Reformu- lated Gasoline”.Reformulated gasoline contains oxygenates and is specially blended to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.Mitsubishi Motors Cor
poration strongly sup-
ports the use of reformulated gasoline. Prop- erly blended reformulated gasoline has noadverse effect on vehicle performance or the durability of engine and fuel system. MMT is a manganese-containing metallic additive that is blended into some gasolinesto increase the octane number. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation recommends using gaso- lines without MMT.
Fuel selection
WA R N I N G Gasoline is highly flammable and explo- sive. You could be burned, seriouslyinjured or killed when handling it. When- ever you refuel your vehicle, stop the engine and keep flames, sparks, andsmoking materials away from the vehicle. Always handle fuel in well-ventilated out- door areas.CAUTION Using leaded gasoline in your vehicle will damage the engine, catalytic converter, and the oxygen sensors. Also, using leaded gaso-line is illegal, and will void your warranty coverage of the engine, catalytic converter, and oxygen sensors.

Use of gasolines blended with MMT may adversely affect performance, and cause the malfunction indicator on your instrument panel to come on. If this happens, contact anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance. Your vehicle may have been designed to sat- isfy California’s low-emission regulations based on clean-burning low-sulfur gasoline. Gasoline sold in parts of the country otherthan California is allowed to have a higher sulfur content. Using such gasoline could adversely affect the vehicle’s catalytic con-verter and cause the engine malfunction indi- cator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) to come on. Illumina-tion of this indicator while you are using high-sulfur gasoline does not necessarily mean the vehicle’s emission-control system ismalfunctioning. Your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer may suggest you try using a different, lower-sulfur brand of unleaded gas-oline to determine whether the problem is fuel-related.

Sulfur in gasoline
NOTE
Poor-quality gasoline can cause problems such as poor starting,
stalling during idling,
abnormal engine noise, and poor accelera- tion. If you experience any of these prob- lems, try using a different brand of gasoline. If the engine malfunction indicator (“SER- VICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) flashes, have the vehicle inspected assoon as possible by the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Repeatedly driving short distances at low speeds can cause deposits to form in the fuelsystem and engine, resulting in poor starting and poor acceleration. If these problems occur, you are advised to add a detergentadditive to the gasoline when you refuel the vehicle. The additive will remove the depos- its, thereby returning the engine to a normalcondition. Be sure to use a Mitsubishi Motors Genuine cleaning additive. Using an unsuitable additive could make the enginemalfunction. For details, please contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
Filling the fuel tank
WA R N I N G Gasoline is highly flammable and explo- sive. You could be burned, seriously injured or killed when handling it. When refueling your vehicle, always turn theengine off and keep away from flames, sparks, and smoking materials. Always handle fuel in well-ventilated outdoorareas. Before removing the fuel tank filler cap, be sure to get rid of your body’s static electricity by touching a metal part of the car or fuel pump. Any static electricity onyour body could create a spark that ignites fuel vapor. Perform the whole refueling process (opening the fuel tank filler door, remov- ing the fuel cap, etc.) by yourself; do notlet any other person near the fuel tank filler. If you allowed a person to help you and that person was carrying static elec-tricity, fuel vapor could be ignited. Do not move away from the fuel tank filler until refueling is finished. If you moved away and did something else (for example, sitting on a seat) part-way through the refueling process, you could pick up a fresh charge of static electricity. Be careful not to inhale fuel vapor. Fuel contains toxic substances.

It is recommended that you downshift to a lower gear when needed to maintain thedesired speed, according to the table. Avoid downshifting at too high a speed. The engine may suffer damage. To maintain a safe speed and prolong brake life, shift down to 2nd or 1st when descend- ing a steep hill.Downshifting is also important to avoid “lug-ging” the engine at too low a speed, such as when turning a corner or when driving up a steep hill.
N00513100228
Do not use the gearshift lever as a han- drest. This can result in premature wear ofthe transaxle shift forks.
The table above shows the maximum rec- ommended driving speed for in each gear. Do not drive near or at these speeds for prolonged periods of time.
N00560200047
The CVT will automatically and continuouslychange its gear ratio depending on road anddriving conditions. This helps achieve smooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. Also you can manually shift up and shiftdown the transmission. Refer to “Sports
mode” on page 5-53. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal isreleased and ensures smooth driving. According to the condi
tions, the transmission
will automatically shift to a lower gear ratioto achieve stronger engine braking. This may help reduce your need to use the service brake.
N00560300048
As an additional safe
ty precaution, models
equipped with a continuously variable trans-mission have a shift-lock device that holds the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position. To move the selector lever from the “P”(PARK) position to another position, follow the steps below. 1. Press and hold the brake pedal down.

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) pushthe accelerator to the floor. The CVT will automatically downshift. For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be left in selector lever position and held stationary with the servicebrake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the selector lever in the “N”(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in “D” (DRIVE) position or Sports mode posi-tion.
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and then move the selector lever to the “P”(PARK) position. If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speedwhen starting on an uphill slope, it may be that there is something unusual happening in the transmission, causing a safety device toactivate. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your ch
oice as soon as possi-
ble.

The electronically controlled 4WD system isan all-wheel drive system that allows one ofthree drive modes to be selected with a switch, in accordance with the driving condi- tions. The following drive modes are available.
Passing acceleration
NOTE
In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.

CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or service brake. Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler- ation may occur if the selector lever is in aposition other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).

4-wheel drive operation 5-58 Features and controls
5
N00530600156
Your vehicle has been designed primarily for use on pavement. But its unique 4 -wheel drive system allows you to occasionally travel on unpaved roads, to campgrounds, picnic sites, and similarlocations. Not only does this ensure better handling on dry, paved roads but also permits better trac-tion when driving on slippery, wet or snow-covered roads and when moving out of mud. But it is not suitable for heavy off road use or towing in rough conditions. It is particularly important to note that 4- wheel drive may not give sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steepslopes. You should try to avoid driving on steep slopes. Also, you must exercise caution when drivingon sand and mud and when driving through water because sufficient traction may not be available in certain circumstances. Please avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud.
When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” or “LOCK” position at low speed, a slight difference in steering may be experi-enced similar to feeling
as if the brakes were
4-wheel drive operation
WA R N I N GDo not over-rely on the 4-wheel drive vehi- cles. Even 4-wheel drive vehicles have lim- its to the system and ability to maintain control and traction. Reckless driving may lead to accidents. Always drive carefully, taking account of the road conditions. Improperly operating this vehicle on or off-pavement can cause an accident or rollover in which you and your passengers could be seriously injured or killed.• Follow all instructions and guidelines inthe owner’s manual.• Keep your speed low and do not drivefaster than conditions.NOTE
Driving on rough roads can be hard on a vehicle. Before you leave the pavement, be sure all scheduled maintenance and servicehas been done, and that you have inspected your vehicle. Pay special attention to the condition of the tires, and check the tire pres-sures. Mitsubishi Motors is not responsible to the operator for any damage or injury caused or liability incurred by improper and negligentoperation of a vehicle. All techniques of vehicle operation depend on the skill and experience of the operator and other partici-pating parties. Any deviation from the rec- ommended operating instructions above is at their own risk.
Note that the stopping distance required of the 4-wheel drive vehicle differs very little from that of the front-wheel drive vehicle. When driving on a snow-covered road or a slippery, muddy surface, make sure that youkeep a sufficient distance between your vehi- cle and the one ahead of you. The driving posture should be more upright; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation. Be sure to wearthe seat belt. After driving on rough roads, check each part of the vehicle and wash it thoroughly with water. Refer to the “Inspection and maintenance following rough road opera-tion” section and “Vehicle care and Mainte- nance” sections.CAUTION Setting the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK” or “LOCK” position to drive on drypaved road will increase fuel consumption, with possible noise generation.

applied. This is called tight corner braking and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe- nomenon is typical of 4-wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” or “SNOW” in accordance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for asmooth start.
Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK” or “LOCK” and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal as constantas possible, and drive at low speed.
Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steepslope. Avoid driving on
steep slopes even
On snowy or icy roads
NOTE
The use of snow tires is recommended. Maintain a safe distance between vehicles, avoid sudden braking, and use engine brak-ing (downshifting).CAUTION Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration and sharp turning. Skidding occurs and con- trol of the vehicle could be lost.
Driving on sandy or muddy roads
CAUTION Do not force the vehicle or drive recklessly on sandy surfaces. In comparison with nor- mal road surfaces, the engine and otherdrive-system components are put under excessive strain when driving on such a sur- face. This could lead to accidents. If any of the following conditions occur while the vehicle is being driven, immedi-ately park your vehicle in a safe place and follow these procedures:• If the engine coolant temperature display
flashes on the information screen in the multi-information display or the engine power drops suddenly. Refer to “Engine overheating” on page 8-4.• If the “ ” warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the “ ” warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.Refer to “Warning display” on page 5-51.
WA R N I N G When attempting to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, be sure that the area around the vehicle is clear of people and physical objects. The rocking motion may cause the vehicle to suddenly launch for-ward/backward, causing injury or dam- age to nearby people or objects.NOTE
Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration and sharp turning; such operations could result in the vehicle becoming stuck. If the vehicle becomes stuck in sandy or muddy roads, it can often be moved with a rocking motion. Move the gearshift leveralternately between the 1st and “R” (Reverse) positions (M/T), the “D” (DRIVE) and “R” (REVERSE) positions (CVT), whilepressing lightly on the accelerator pedal. Driving on rough road can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehicle thoroughly as soon as possible after such use.
