FUEL GAUGE
The gauge indicates theapproximatefuel level
in the tank.
The gauge may move slightly during braking,
turning, acceleration, or going up or down hills.
The gauge needle returns to E (Empty) after the
ignition key is turned to OFF.
The low fuel warning light comes on when the
amount of fuel in the tank is getting low.
Refill the fuel tank before the gauge regis-
ters E (Empty) .The
indicates that the fuel-filler door is
located on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
If the low fuel warning appears on the ve-
hicle information display indicator while
driving with the low fuel level, refill the fuel
tank immediately and start the hybrid sys-
tem. Do not drive the vehicle if the fuel tank
is empty. The engine will not be able to
start to recharge the high voltage battery
and the high voltage battery will become
discharged.
CAUTION
cIf the vehicle runs out of fuel,
the
malfunction indicator light
(MIL) may come on. Refuel as soon as
possible. After a few driving trips,
the
light should turn off. If the
light remains on after a few driving
trips, have the vehicle inspected by a
NISSAN dealer.
cFor additional information, see “Mal-
function indicator light (MIL)” later in
this section. This unit measures terrestrial magnetism and in-
dicates the direction of the vehicle’s heading.
With the ignition switch in the ON position, press
the

Zone variation change procedure
The difference between magnetic north and geo-
graphical north is known as variance. In some
areas, this difference can sometimes be great
enough to cause false compass readings. Follow
these instructions to set the variance for your
particular location if this happens:
1. Establish your location on the zone map.
Refer to the illustration. Record your zone
number.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
3. Push the MODE button in for 5 seconds until
the current zone entry number and the
“VAR” icon is displayed.
4. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the
desired zone entry number is displayed.
Once the desired zone number is displayed, stop
pressing the MODE button and the display will
show compass direction within a few seconds.NOTE:
Use zone number 5 for Hawaii.

cIf a magnet is located near the com-
pass or the vehicle is driven where the
terrestrial magnetism is disturbed, the
compass display may not indicate the
correct direction.
cIn places where the terrestrial magne-
tism is disturbed, the correction of the
direction starts automatically.
Inaccurate compass direction:
The compass display is equipped with automatic
correction function. If the correct direction is not
shown, follow this procedure.
1. With the display turned on, press and hold
the
switch for about 9 seconds. The
display will read “C.”
2. Calibrate the compass by driving the vehicle
in three complete circles at a maximum
speed of 5 MPH (8 km/h) .
3. After completing the circles the display
should return to normal.
cIf the compass deviates from the correct
indication soon after repeated adjustment,
have the compass checked at an authorized
dealer.

cThe compass may not indicate the correct
compass point in tunnels or while driving up
or down a steep hill. (The compass returns
to the correct compass point when the ve-
hicle moves to an area where the geomag-
netism is stabilized.)
CAUTION
cDo not install a ski rack, antenna, etc.,
which are attached to the vehicle by
means of a magnet. They affect the op-
eration of the compass.
cWhen cleaning the mirror, use a paper
towel or similar material dampened
with glass cleaner. Do not spray glass
cleaner directly on the mirror as it may
cause the liquid cleaner to enter the
mirror housing.

warning light
When the ignition switch is in the ON position,
the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) warning light
illuminates. After the Hybrid System is in the in
the READY mode, the ABS warning light turns
off.
If the ABS warning light illuminates while the
Hybrid System is running, or while driving, it may
indicate the ABS is not functioning properly.
Have the system checked by a NISSAN dealer.
If an ABS malfunction occurs, the anti-lock func-
tion is turned off. The brake system then operates
normally, but without anti-lock assistance. See
9Brake system9in the9Starting and driving9sec-
tion.
orBrake warning light
This light perfomrs the following functions for the
parking brake and brake systems.
cParking brake indicator

light also comes on, stop the vehicleimmedi-
atelyand call a NISSAN dealer.
WARNING
cYour brake system may not be working
properly if the warning light is on. Driv-
ing could be dangerous. If you judge it
to be safe, drive carefully to the nearest
service station for repairs. Otherwise,
have your vehicle towed because driv-
ing it could be dangerous.
cPressing the brake pedal with the igni-
tion switch off and/or a low brake fluid
level may increase your stopping dis-
tance and braking will require greater
pedal effort as well as pedal travel.
cIf the brake fluid level is below the
