. For themost effective protection
when thevehicle isin motion, the
seat should beupright. Alwayssit well
back inthe seat withboth feet
on the floor andadjust theseat
properly. SeeªPrecautions onseat
belt usageº (P.1-10) .
. After adjustment, gentlyrockinthe
seat tomake sureitis securely
locked.
. Do not leave children unattended
inside thevehicle. Theycould un-
knowingly activateswitches orcon-
trols. Unattended childrencould
become involved inserious acci-
dents. .
The seatback shouldnotbereclined
any more thanneeded forcomfort.
Seat belts aremost effective when
the passenger sitswell back and
straight upinthe seat. Ifthe seat-
back isreclined, therisk ofsliding
under thelapbelt andbeing injured
is increased.
CAUTION
When adjusting theseat positions, be
sure nottocontact anymoving partsto
avoid possible injuriesand/ordamage.

the lever upand lean your body forward. Release
the lever tolock theseatback inposition.

. Depending onthe passenger's seat
sliding position whenthepassenger
seat isunoccupied whiledriving, a
noise maybeheard asthe side part
of the passenger's seatcontacts the
seat belttongue. Inthis case, move the
seat tothe rearmost positiontoavoid
interference.
. Ifyou arehaving difficulty turningthe
adjusting dial,park thevehicle and
then open thedoor orget out ofthe
vehicle tooperate the
dial.

CAUTION
When folding orreturning theseatback -
(s) tothe upright position, toavoid
injury toyourself andothers:
. Make surethattheseat path isclear
before moving theseat.
WARNING
. Do not fold down therear seats
when occupants areinthe rear seat
area orany objects areonthe rear
seats.
. Never allowanyone toride inthe
cargo areaoron the rear seats
when theyareinthe fold-down
position. Useofthese areas by
passengers withoutproperre-
straints couldresult inserious injury
in an accident orsudden stop.
. Properly secureallcargo withropes
or straps tohelp prevent itfrom
sliding orshifting. Donot place
cargo higher thantheseatbacks. In
a sudden stoporcollision, unse-
cured cargo couldcause personal injury.
. When returning theseatbacks tothe
upright position, becertain theyare
completely securedinthe latched
position. Ifthey arenot completely
secured, passengers maybeinjured
in an accident orsudden stop.

Head restraint/headrest supplement
the other vehicle safetysystems. They
may provide additional protection
against injuryincertain rearendcolli-
sions. Adjustable headrestraints/head-
rests must beadjusted properly, as
specified inthis section. Checkthe
adjustment aftersomeone elseuses
the seat. Donot attach anything tothe
head restraint/headrest stalksorre-
move thehead restraint/headrest. Do
not use theseat ifthe head restraint/
headrest hasbeen removed. Ifthe head
restraint/headrest wasremoved, rein-
stall andproperly adjustthehead
restraint/headrest beforeanoccupant
uses theseating position. Failureto
follow theseinstructions canreduce the
effectiveness ofthe head restraint/
headrest. Thismayincrease therisk of
serious injuryordeath inacollision.

removed, ensurethatitis reinstalled and
locked inplace before ridinginthat desig-

vehicle.
5. Reinstall andproperly adjustthehead
restraint/headrest beforeanoccupant uses
the seating
position.

The Active HeadRestraint movesforward
utilizing theforce thattheseatback receives
from theoccupant inarear-end collision. The
movement ofthe head restraint helpssupport
the occupant's headbyreducing itsbackward
movement andhelping absorbsomeofthe
forces thatmay lead towhiplash-type injuries.
Active HeadRestraints areeffective forcolli-
sions atlow tomedium speedsinwhich itis said
that whiplash injuryoccurs most.
Active HeadRestraints operateonlyincertain
rear-end collisions. Afterthecollision, thehead
restraints returntotheir original positions. The
front head restraints havemultiple adjust-
ment notches.
Properly adjusttheActive HeadRestraints as
described inthis section.
