• Brake force control function at braking hard detects driver ′s brake operations with the pressure sensor,
judges a brake booster ′s maximum brake power function by using information from the vacuum sensor, and
enhances more powerful braking force by controlling brakes of four wheels.
• VDC warning lamp blinks while VDC function is in operat ion and indicates to the driver that the function is in
operation.
• CONSULT can be used to diagnose the system.
• Fail-safe function is adopted. When a malfunction occurs in VDC function, the control is suspended for VDC
function and TCS function. However, ABS function and EBD function operate normally. Refer to BRC-39,
"Fail-safe".
INPUT SIGNAL AND OUTPUT SIGNAL
Major signal transmission between each unit via communication lines is shown in the following table.

VDC Function That Prevents Oversteer Tendency
• During cornering, brake force (brake fluid pressure) is applied on front wheel and rear wheel on the outer
side of turn. Momentum is generated directing the vehicle toward the outer side of the turn. Oversteer is pre-
vented.
• Changing driving lane on a slippery road, when there may be a tendency to oversteer, engine output is con-
trolled as well as brake force (brake fluid pr essure) of 4 wheels. Oversteer tendency decreases.
Component Signal description
ECM Transmits the following signals to ABS actuator an

SYSTEM
VDC Function That Prevents Understeer Tendency
• During cornering, brake force (brake fluid pressure) is applied on front wheel and rear wheel on the inner

prevented.
• Applying brakes during cornering on a slippery road, when there may be a tendency to understeer, engine output is controlled as well as brake force (bra ke fluid pressure) of 4 wheels. Understeer tendency

GENERAL MAINTENANCE
UNDER THE HOOD AND VEHICLE
The maintenance items listed here should be checked periodically (e.g. each time you check the engine oil or refuel).
SeatsCheck seat position controls such as seat adjusters, seatback recliner, etc. to
make sure they operate smoothly and that all latches lock securely in every po-
sition. Check that the head restraints move up and down smoothly and that the
locks (if equipped) hold securely in all latched positions. Check that the latches
lock securely for folding-down rear seatbacks. —
Seat belts Check that all parts of the seat belt system (e.g. buckles, anchors, adjusters and
retractors) operate properly and smoothly and are installed securely. Check the
belt webbing for cuts, fraying, wear or damage. MA-43
Accelerator pedal
Check the pedal for smooth operation and make sure the pedal does not catch
or require uneven effort. Keep the floor mats away from the pedal. —
Brakes Check that the brake does not pull the vehicle to one side when applied. —
Brake pedal and
booster Check the pedal for smooth operation and make sure it has the proper distance
under it when depressed fully. Check the brake booster function. Be sure to keep
floor mats away from the pedal. BR-9
Clutch pedal
Make sure the pedal operates smoothly and check that it has the proper free play. CL-5
Parking brakeCheck that the lever or pedal has the proper travel and make sure that the vehicle
is held securely on a fairly steep hill when only the parking brake is applied. PB-4

Engine drive belts
Make sure that no belt is frayed, worn, cracked or oily. MA-14
Engine oil levelCheck the level on the oil level gauge after parking the vehicle on a level spot and

Exhaust system
Make sure there are no loose supports, cracks or holes. If the sound of the ex-
haust seems unusual or there is a smell of exhaust fumes, immediately locate the
trouble and correct it. MA-26
Underbody
The underbody is frequently exposed to corrosive substances such as those
used on icy roads or to control dust. It is very important to remove these sub-
stances, otherwise rust will form on the floor pan, frame, fuel lines and around the
exhaust system. At the end of winter, the underbody should be thoroughly
flushed with plain water, being careful to clean those areas where mud and dirt
can easily accumulate. —
Fluid leaks Check under the vehicle for fuel, oil, water or other fluid leaks after the vehicle
has been parked for a while. Water dripping from the air conditioner after use is
normal. If you should notice any leaks or gasoline fumes are evident, check for
the cause and correct it immediately. —

DISC BRAKE : Brake BurnishingINFOID:0000000012432285
BRAKE BURNISHING
Burnish contact surfaces between disc brake rotor and brake pads according to the following procedure after
refinishing disc brake rotors, replacing disc brake rotors,
replacing brake pads, or if a soft pedal occurs at very
low mileage:
CAUTION:
• Be careful of vehicle speed because the brake peda l does not operate firmly/securely until pads and
disc brake rotor are securely seated.
• Only perform this procedure under safe road and traffic conditions. Use extreme caution.
1. Drive vehicle on straight, flat road.
2. Depress brake pedal with the power to stop vehicle within 3 to 5 seconds until the vehicle stops.
3. Drive without depressing brake pedal for a few minutes to cool the brakes.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 until pad and disc brake rotor are securely seated.

INSPECTION
Appearance
Check surface of disc brake rotor for uneven wear, cra cks, and serious damage. Replace it if necessary. Refer
to BR-45, "
Front Disc Brake".
Runout
1. Secure the disc brake rotor to the wheel hub with wheel nuts (2
points at least).
2. Check the wheel bearing axial end play before the inspection. Refer to FA X - 7 , "
Inspection".
3. Inspect the runout with a dial indicator to measure at 10 mm (0.39 in) inside the disc edge.
4. Find the installation position that has a minimum runout by shift-
ing the disc brake rotor-to-wheel hub installation position by one
hole at a time if the runout exceeds the limit value.
5. Refinish or replace the disc brake rotor if the runout is outside the limit even after performing the above
operation.
CAUTION:
If the thickness is less than w ear thickness + 0.3 mm (0.012 in), replace the disc brake rotor. Refer
to BR-37, "
BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY : Removal and Installation".
Thickness
Check the thickness of the disc brake rotor using a micrometer.
Replace the disc brake rotor if the thickness is below the wear limit.

INSPECTION
Parking Brake Control Stroke
1. When parking brake control is operated with a force of 196 N(20.0 kg-f, 44.1 lb-f), make sure parking brake control stroke is
within the specified number of notches. (Check by listening and
counting the number of ratchet clicks.)
2. Check that the parking brake lamp illuminates, after parking brake has been operated to the specified number of notches.
Inspect Components
• Check the parking brake components for bends, wear and or damage. Replace if any damage is noted.
• Check that the parking brake operates properly ; be sure that it is not bound up or sticking.
• Check that the brake warning light illuminates afte r parking brake has been operated to the specified number
of notches. Refer to PB-10, "
Parking Brake Control".
• Inspect and adjust the rear brakes if necessary. Refer to BR-43, "
Inspection and Adjustment".
ADJUSTMENT
1. Pull parking brake control (1) until the access hole (2) is visible.
Use suitable tool to adjust nut (A).
2. Turn adjusting nut (A) using suitable tool to loosen the front cable.
3. Depress the brake pedal with a force of 196 N (20. 0 kg-f, 44.1 lb-f) about 10 times and adjust the brake
shoe clearance.
4. Adjust the cable with the following procedure. CAUTION:Number of

Removal and InstallationINFOID:0000000012430692
REMOVAL
1. Remove the center console assembly. Refer to IP-18, "Removal and Installation".
2. Loosen the adjusting nut. Refer to PB-6, "
Exploded View".
NOTE:
It is not necessary to remove the parking brake front cable.
3. Separate the parking brake rear cables (RH/LH ) from the parking brake front cable. Refer to PB-6,
"Exploded View".
4. Remove the rear wheels and tires using power tool. Refer to WT-48, "
Exploded View".
5. Remove rear wheel sensors. Refer to BRC-143, "
REAR SENSOR ROTOR : Removal and Installation".
6. Remove the rear drum brake components. Refer to BR-41, "
Removal and Installation".
CAUTION:
Do not separate the brake tube from the wheel cylinders.
7. Remove the center muffler. Refer to EX-5, "
Exploded View".
8. Remove nuts (A) and remove center floor insulators.
9. Remove the bolts and remove the parking brake rear cables (RH/LH). CAUTION:
Do not excessively bend the parking brake cables.
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse the adjusting nut if the nut is removed.
• Inspect and adjust the rear brakes. Refer to BR-43, "
Inspection and Adjustment".
• Inspect and adjust the parking brake. Refer to PB-4, "
Inspection and Adjustment".

COMPONENT INSPECTION
SEAT BELT RETRACTOR ON-VEHICLE CHECK
Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) and Automatic Locking Retractors (ALR)
NOTE:
All seat belt retractors are Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) type. In an emergency (sudden stop) the
retractor will lock and prevent the webbing from extendi ng any further. All 3-point type seat belt retractors
except the driver seat belt also have an Automati c Locking Retractors (ALR) mode. The ALR mode (also
called child restraint mode) is used when installing child seats. The ALR mode is activated when the seat belt
is fully extended. When the webbing is then retracted part ially, the ALR mode automatically locks the seat belt
in a specific position so the webbing cannot be extended any further. To cancel the ALR mode, allow the seat
belt to fully wind back into the retractor.
Check the seat belt retractors with the following test(s ) to determine if a retractor assembly is operating prop-
erly.
ELR Function Stationary Check
Grasp the shoulder webbing and pull forward quickly. T he retractor should lock and prevent the belt from
extending further.
ALR Function Stationary Check
1. Pull out the entire length of seat belt from retractor until a click is heard.
2. Retract the webbing partially. A clicking noise shoul d be heard as the webbing retracts, indicating that the
retractor is in the Automatic Locking Retractors (ALR) mode.
3. Grasp the seat belt and try to pull out the retractor. The webbing must lock and not extend any further. If it
does not operate normally, replace the retractor assembly.
4. Allow the entire length of the webbing to re tract to cancel the automatic locking mode.
ELR Function Moving Check
WARNING:
Perform the following test in a safe, open area clear of other vehicles and obstructions (for example, a
large, empty parking lot). Road surface must be p aved and dry. Never perform the following test on
wet or gravel roads or on public streets and highw ays. This could result in an accident and serious
personal injury. The driver and passenger must be prepared to brace themselves in the event that the
retractor does not lock.
1. Fasten driver seat belt. Buckle a passenger into the seat for the belt that is to be tested.
2. Proceed to the designated safe area.
3. Drive the vehicle at approximately 16 km/h ( 10 mph). Notify any passengers of a pending sudden stop
and the driver and passenger must be prepared to brace themselves in the event that the retractor does
not lock. Apply brakes firmly and make a very hard stop.
During stopping, seat belts should lock and not be extended. If the seat belt retractor assembly does not lock,
perform the retractor off-vehicle check.
FRONT SEAT BELT RETRACTOR OFF-VEHICLE CHECK
1. Remove the front seat belt retractor. Refer to SB-9, "SEAT BELT RETRACTOR : Removal and Installa-
tion".
2. Slowly pull out webbing while tilting the seat belt re tractor forward from the mounted position without twist-
ing the seat belt retractor as shown.
A : The webbing can be pulled out if the retractor is tilted 17 °
degree or less.
B : The webbing can not be pulled out if the retractor is tilted 27°
degrees or more.
NOTE:
A and B show tilting angles.

3. Replace the seat belt retractor if it does not operate within specifications.
