TRACTION CONTROL (ASR) AND DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESP)
These systems are linked and com-
p l e m e n t t h e A B S .
T h e A S R s y s t e m o p t i m i s e s d r i v e t o
p r e v e n t t h e w h e e l s s k i d d i n g , b y a c t -
i n g o n t h e b r a k e s o f t h e d r i v e w h e e l s
a n d o n t h e e n g i n e . I t a l s o a l l o w s t h e
d i r e c t i o n a l s t a b i l i t y o f t h e v e h i c l e t o
b e i m p r o v e d o n a c c e l e r a t i o n .
I f t h e r e i s a v a r i a t i o n b e t w e e n t h e t r a -
j e c t o r y f o l l o w e d b y t h e v e h i c l e a n d
t h a t r e q u i r e d b y t h e d r i v e r , t h e E S P
system automatically acts on the en-
gine and the brake of one or more
w h e e l s , i n o r d e r t o p u t t h e v e h i c l e
back on course, within the limits of
t h e l a w s o f p h y s i c s . I n e x c e p t i o n a l c o n d i t i o n s ( s t a r t i n g a
v e h i c l e w h i c h i s b o g g e d d o w n , s t u c k
i n s n o w , o n s o f t g r o u n d , . . . ) , i t m a y
b e a d v i s a b l e t o d i s a r m t h e A S R a n d
ESP systems, so that the wheels can
m o v e f r e e l y a n d r e g a i n g r i p .

Activation of the ASR and ESP
systems
W h e n t h e i g n i t i o n i s o n , t h e A S R a n d
E S P s y s t e m s a r e a l w a y s a c t i v e .
The switch lights up and
t h e w a r n i n g l i g h t c o m e s o n :
t h e A S R a n d E S P s y s t e m s
a r e d i s a r m e d .
These are triggered again:
automatically if the ignition is
switched off,
a u t o m a t i c a l l y a b o v e 3 0 m p h
( 5 0 k m / h ) ,
manually by pressing the switch
a g a i n . When a malfunction of the
systems occurs, the switch
l i g h t l a s h e s a n d t h e w a r n -
ing light comes on, accom-
panied by an audible signal
and a message on the multifunction
d i s p l a y .

To adjust the height of the
front seat belts
To lower the attachment point,
squeeze control 1 and slide it
d o w n w a r d s .
To raise the attachment point,

Fastening the seat belts
Pull the strap, then insert the
b u c k l e i n t o t h e s t a l k .
Check that the seat belt is fas-
t e n e d b y p u l l i n g t h e s t r a p .
Unfastening the seat belts
When the ignition is switched
on, the warning light comes
on on the instrument panel
i f t h e d r i v e r h a s n o t f a s t e n e d
h i s s e a t b e l t .
With the engine running and the
doors closed, the light switches off
a u t o m a t i c a l l y a f t e r 3 0 s e c o n d s .
I f t h e s e a t b e l t i s u n f a s t e n e d :
- b e l o w 1 2 m p h ( 2 0 k m / h ) , t h e l i g h t comes on continuously,
- a b o v e 1 2 m p h ( 2 0 k m / h ) a n d f o r two minutes, the warning light
l a s h e s a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e
s i g n a l o f i n c r e a s i n g v o l u m e . O n c e
t h e s e t w o m i n u t e s h a v e e l a p s e d ,
the warning light remains on until
t h e d r i v e r f a s t e n s h i s s e a t b e l t .
Rear seat belts

Pre-tensioning and
force-limiting front
seat belts
S a f e t y i n t h e e v e n t o f a f r o n t a l i m p a c t
h a s b e e n i m p r o v e d b y t h e i n t r o d u c -
tion of pre-tensioning and force-lim-
i t i n g f r o n t s e a t b e l t s . D e p e n d i n g o n
the seriousness of the impact, the
pre-tensioning system instantly tight-
e n s t h e s e a t b e l t i r m l y a g a i n s t t h e
b o d y o f t h e o c c u p a n t .
The pre-tensioning seat belts are
a r m e d w h e n t h e i g n i t i o n i s o n .
T h e f o r c e - l i m i t i n g d e v i c e r e d u c e s t h e
pressure of the seat belt against the
chest of the occupant, so increasing
h i s p r o t e c t i o n .

W h e r e v e r y o u a r e s e a t e d i n
t h e v e h i c l e , a l w a y s f a s t e n
y o u r s e a t b e l t , e v e n f o r s h o r t
j o u r n e y s . I n o r d e r t o b e e f f e c t i v e , a s e a t b e l t :
- must be tightened as close to the
body as possible,
- must restrain one adult only,
- must not bear any trace of cuts or fraying,
- must be pulled in front of you with a s m o o t h m o v e m e n t , c h e c k i n g
that it does not twist,
- m u s t n o t b e t r a n s f o r m e d o r m o d i i e d t o a v o i d a l t e r i n g i t s p e r f o r m a n c e .
In accordance with current safety
regulations, all repairs and checks
must be carried out by a PEUGEOT
dealer who guarantees that the work
i s c a r r i e d o u t c o r r e c t l y .
H a v e y o u r s e a t b e l t s c h e c k e d r e g u -
larly by a PEUGEOT dealer and par-
ticularly if the straps show signs of
d a m a g e .
Clean the seat belt straps with soapy
w a t e r o r a t e x t i l e c l e a n i n g p r o d u c t ,
s o l d b y P E U G E O T d e a l e r s .
A f t e r f o l d i n g o r m o v i n g a s e a t o r r e a r
bench seat, ensure that the seat belt
i s p o s i t i o n e d a n d r o l l e d u p c o r r e c t l y . Recommendations for children:
- use a suitable child seat if the pas-
s e n g e r i s l e s s t h a n 1 2 y e a r s o l d o r
s h o r t e r t h a n o n e m e t r e i f t y ,
- do not use the strap-guide * when a c h i l d s e a t i s i n s t a l l e d .
- n e v e r u s e t h e s a m e s e a t b e l t t o secure more than one person,
- n e v e r a l l o w a c h i l d t o t r a v e l o n y o u r l a p .
Depending on the nature and se-
riousness of the impacts , the pre-
t e n s i o n i n g d e v i c e m a y b e t r i g g e r e d
before and independently of the air
b a g s . T r i g g e r i n g o f t h e p r e - t e n s i o n e r s
is accompanied by a slight emission
of harmless smoke and a noise, due
t o t h e a c t i v a t i o n o f t h e p y r o t e c h n i c
c a r t r i d g e i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t h e s y s t e m .
In all cases, the air bag warning light
c o m e s o n .
F o l l o w i n g a n i m p a c t , h a v e t h e s e a t
belts system checked, and if neces-
s a r y r e p l a c e d , b y a P E U G E O T d e a l e r .
D o n o t i n v e r t t h e s e a t b e l t b u c k l e s a s
t h e y w i l l n o t f u l i l t h e i r r o l e f u l l y .
I f t h e s e a t s h a v e a r m r e s t s * , t h e l a p
part of the seat belt must always
p a s s u n d e r t h e a r m r e s t .
T h e s e a t b e l t s a r e i t t e d w i t h a n i n e r t i a
reel permitting automatic adjustment
o f t h e l e n g t h o f t h e s t r a p t o y o u r s i z e .
The seat belt is stored automatically
w h e n n o t i n u s e .
Before and after use, ensure that the
s e a t b e l t i s r o l l e d u p c o r r e c t l y .
The lower part of the strap must be
positioned as low as possible on the
p e l v i s .
The upper part must be positioned in
t h e h o l l o w o f t h e s h o u l d e r .
T h e i n e r t i a r e e l s a r e i t t e d w i t h a n a u -
t o m a t i c l o c k i n g d e v i c e w h i c h c o m e s
i n t o o p e r a t i o n i n t h e e v e n t o f a c o l l i -
sion, on emergency braking or if the
v e h i c l e r o l l s o v e r . Y o u c a n r e l e a s e
t h e d e v i c e b y p u l l i n g r a p i d l y o n t h e
s t r a p a n d r e l e a s i n g i t .

supplements the action of the force-

If a collision occurs, the electronic
detectors record and analyse the
front and side impacts sustained in
t h e i m p a c t d e t e c t i o n z o n e s :
- in the case of a serious impact, the air bags are triggered instant-
ly and protect the occupants of
t h e v e h i c l e ( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f
t h e r e a r c e n t r e p a s s e n g e r ) ; i m -
mediately after the impact, the air
b a g s d e l a t e r a p i d l y s o t h a t t h e y
d o n o t h i n d e r v i s i b i l i t y o r t h e e x i t
of the occupants,
- in the case of a minor or rear im- p a c t o r i n c e r t a i n r o l l - o v e r c o n -
ditions, the air bags will not be
t r i g g e r e d ; t h e s e a t b e l t a l o n e i s
s u f i c i e n t t o p r o v i d e o p t i m u m p r o -
t e c t i o n i n t h e s e s i t u a t i o n s .

B. S i d e i m p a c t z o n e . T r i g g e r i n g o f t h e a i r b a g ( s )
is accompanied by a slight

This smoke is not harmful, but sen-
s i t i v e i n d i v i d u a l s m a y e x p e r i e n c e
s l i g h t i r r i t a t i o n .
The noise of the detonation may re-
sult in a slight loss of hearing for a
s h o r t t i m e .
Impact detection zones The air bags do not
operate when the ignition
is switched off.
This equipment will only op-
e r a t e o n c e . I f a s e c o n d i m p a c t o c c u r s
(during the same or a subsequent ac-
c i d e n t ) , t h e a i r b a g w i l l n o t o p e r a t e .

Front air bags
System which protects the head and
c h e s t o f t h e d r i v e r a n d f r o n t p a s s e n -
g e r i n t h e e v e n t o f a f r o n t i m p a c t .
T h e d r i v e r ’ s a i r b a g i s i n c o r p o r a t e d
i n t h e c e n t r e o f t h e s t e e r i n g w h e e l ;
the front passenger’s air bag is incor-
p o r a t e d i n t h e f a s c i a a b o v e t h e g l o v e
b o x .
Activation
The air bags are triggered simultane-
ously, unless the passenger’s front air
b a g i s d i s a r m e d , i n t h e e v e n t o f a s e r i -
ous front impact applied to all or part
of the front impact zone A , in the lon-
g i t u d i n a l c e n t r e l i n e o f t h e v e h i c l e o n a
horizontal plane and directed from the
f r o n t t o t h e r e a r o f t h e v e h i c l e .
T h e f r o n t a i r b a g i n l a t e s b e t w e e n t h e
f r o n t o c c u p a n t o f t h e v e h i c l e a n d t h e
f a s c i a t o c u s h i o n h i s f o r w a r d m o v e -
m e n t . Deactivation
If both air bag warning lights
come on continuously, do not
install a "rear facing" child seat
o n t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r s e a t .

Operating fault
Only the front passenger’s air bag
c a n b e d i s a r m e d :
with the ignition off , insert the
key in the passenger air bag dis-
arming switch 1 ,
turn it to the "OFF" position,
t h e n , r e m o v e t h e k e y k e e p i n g t h e
s w i t c h i n t h i s p o s i t i o n .
This warning light comes
on on the instrument panel
when the ignition is on and
u n t i l t h e a i r b a g i s r e - a r m e d . Reactivation
W h e n y o u r e m o v e t h e c h i l d s e a t , t u r n
switch
1 to the "ON" position to re-
arm the air bag and so guarantee the
safety of your front passenger in the
e v e n t o f a n i m p a c t .
To guarantee the safety of
y o u r c h i l d , i t i s i m p e r a t i v e
that the passenger air bag
is disarmed when you install
a "rear facing" child seat on
t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r s e a t .
Otherwise, the child would risk be-
ing seriously injured or killed if the air
b a g w e r e t r i g g e r e d .

Applying
Pull the handbrake to immobilise
your vehicle. When the vehicle is being
driven, illumination of
this warning light and
of the STOP warning
light, accompanied by an
audible signal and a message on the
multifunction etdisplay, indicates that
the handbrake is still on or has not
been properly released.
When parking on a slope,
direct your wheels towards
the pavement and pull the
handbrake.
Releasing
Pull on the handle and press the
button to release the handbrake.
The four or six speed automatic
gearbox offers a choice between
the comfort of integral automatic
operation , enhanced by a sport and
a snow programme, or manual gear
changing .
P ark: to immobilise the vehicle or
start the engine , with the handbrake
on or off.
R everse: to reverse (select this
position with the vehicle stationary,
engine at idle).
N eutral: to start the engine and to
park , with the handbrake on.
Note: if position N is engaged
inadvertently while driving, allow
the engine to return to idle before
engaging position D to accelerate.
D rive: for driving in automatic
mode.
M anual: to select the gears.
S : sport programme.
: snow programme.
Gear selection gate
Move the lever in the gate to
select a position.
The indicator light for the selection is displayed on the instrument
panel display.
Starting the engine
with the handbrake applied,
select position P or N in the gate,
turn the ignition key to the
Starting position.
Otherwise, you are warned by an
audible signal and a message on the
multifunction display.
