The essentials
Do not pull too hard with the towing vehicle
and t ak
e care to avoid jerking the tow rope.
When towing on an unpaved road, there is al-
ways a risk of overloading and damaging the
anchorage points.
Switch on the ignition so that the turn sig-
nals, windscreen wipers and windscreen
washer can work. Ensure that the steering
wheel is unlocked and moves freely.
Place the gear lever in neutral on vehicles
with a manual gearbox. With an automatic
gearbox, place the lever in N.
To brake, press the brake pedal firmly. The
brake servo does not work when the engine
is switched off.
The power steering only works when the igni-
tion is switched on and the vehicle is moving,
provided that the battery is sufficiently charg-
ed. Otherwise, it will need more force.
Ensure that the tow rope remains taut at all
times.


If the engine will not start, first try starting it
u

ing the battery of another vehicle
››› page 58. You should only attempt to tow-
start a vehicle if charging the battery does
not work. This is done by leveraging wheel
movement.
When tow-starting a vehicle with a petrol en-
gine, do not tow it more than a short dis-
tance, otherwise unburned fuel can enter the
catalytic converter.
● Engage 2nd or 3rd gear before moving off.
● Press the clutch and hold the pedal down.
● Switch the ignition on.
● Once both vehicles are moving, release the
c lut

ch.
● As soon as the engine has started, press
the clut
ch and move the gear lever to neutral.
How to jump start Jump le
ads The jump lead must have a sufficient wire

oss section.
If the engine fails to start because of a dis-
charged battery, the battery can be connec-
ted to the battery of another vehicle to start
the engine. Jump leads must comply with standard
DIN
72553 (see cab
le manufacturer's instruc-
tions). The wire cross section must be at least
25 mm 2
for petrol engines and at least
35 mm 2
for diesel engines. Note
● The v

ehicles must not touch each other,
otherwise electricity could flow as soon as
the positive terminals are connected.
● The discharged battery must be properly
connect
ed to the on-board network.58

come into contact with any moving
parts in the engine compartment.
Starting
7. Start the engine of the vehicle with the boos
ting battery and let it run at idling
speed. 8. Start the engine of the vehicle with the flat
batt
ery and wait for 2 or 3 minutes until
the engine is running.
Removing the jump leads
9. Before you remove the jump leads, switch off the dip
ped beam headlights if they are
switched on.
10.Turn on the heater blower and heated rear windo
w in the vehicle with the flat battery.
This helps minimise voltage peaks which
are generated when the leads are discon-
nected.
11.When the engine is running, disconnect the le
ads in reverse order to the details
given above.
Make sure the battery clamps have sufficient
metal-to-metal contact with the battery termi-
nals.
If the engine fails to start after about 10 sec-
onds, switch off the starter and try again after
about 1 minute. WARNING

Worn or dirty wiper blades reduce visibility

● Always replace damaged or worn blades or

ades which do not clean the windscreen
correctly. CAUTION

ed or dirty windscreen wipers could
scratch the glass.
● If products containing solvents, rough
spon
ges or sharp objects are used to clean
the blades, the graphite layer will be dam-
aged.
● Never use fuel, nail varnish remover, paint
thinner or simi
lar products to clean the win-
dows.
● In icy conditions, always check that the
wiper b
lades are not frozen to the glass be-
fore using the wipers. In cold weather, it may
help to leave the vehicle parked with the wip-
ers in service position ›››

● To pr

event damage to the bonnet and the
wiper arms, only leave them in the service
position.
● Before driving, always lower the wiper

s starting the engine of
the vehicle while another pulls it.
Towing means one vehicle pulling another
that is not roadworthy.
Always consider the legal provisions relating
to tow-starting and towing.
For technical reasons, towing a vehicle with a
discharged battery is not allowed. The jump
start should be used instead ›››
 page 58.
If the vehicle comes with the Keyless Access
system, towing is only allowed with the igni-
tion on!
The vehicle battery drains if the vehicle is
towed with the engine switched off and the
ignition connected. Depending on the battery
charge status, the drop in voltage may be so
large, even after just a few minutes, that no
electrical device in the vehicle may work e.g. the hazard warning lights. In vehicles with
the Keyl

ess Access system, the steering
wheel could lock ››› .
WARNING
A vehicle with no power should never be tow-
ed.
● During towing, never switch off the ignition
w ith the s

tarter button. Otherwise, the elec-
tronic lock of the steering column could sud-
denly get blocked and it would be impossible
to steer the vehicle. This could cause an acci-
dent, serious injury and loss of control of the
vehicle.
● If during towing the vehicle runs out of
pow
er, stop towing immediately and request
the assistance of specialist personnel. WARNING
Vehicle handling and braking capacity

observe the following instructions to mini-
mise the risk of serious accidents and injury:
● As the driver of the vehicle being towed:
– You shou

ld depress the brake much hard-
er as the brake servo does not operate.
Pay the utmost attention to avoid crash-
ing into the towing vehicle.
– More strength is required at the steering
wheel as the power steering does not op-
erate when the engine is switched off.
● As the driver of the towing vehicle: 86

– Avoid sudden braking and manoeuvres.
– Brake earlier than usual and more
smoothly. CAUTION
● To av

oid damaging the vehicle, for example
the paint, remove and replace the lid and
towing eye carefully.
● Unburnt fuel could enter the catalytic con-
ver
ter and damage it during towing. Indications for tow-starting

For technical reasons, towing the following
vehicles is not allowed:
● Vehicles with an automatic gearbox.
● If the vehicle battery is discharged, be-
cau
se in vehicles with the Keyless Access
locking and ignition system the steering re-
mains locked and the electronic parking
brake cannot be deactivated nor can the elec-
tronic lock of the steering column be re-
leased if they are activated. ●
If the b
attery is flat, it is possible that the
engine control units may not operate correct-
ly.
However, if the vehicle must absolutely be
tow-started (in the case of manual gearbox-
es):
● Engage the 2nd or 3rd gear.
● Keep the clutch pressed down.
● Switch on the ignition and the hazard warn-
ing lights.
● Onc

gage the gear to avoid colliding
with the towing vehicle. CAUTION
When tow-starting, unburnt fuel could enter

alytic converter and damage it. Note

onic parking brake and, if appropriate,
the electronic lock of the steering column are
deactivated. If the vehicle has no power sup-
ply or there is an electric system fault, the
engine must be tow-started to deactivate the
electronic parking brake and the electronic
lock of the steering column. Indications for towing
Tow rope or tow bar
It
i

s safer for the vehicle to be towed using a
tow bar, avoiding damage to the vehicle. A
tow rope should only be used if a tow bar is
not available.
A tow rope should be slightly elastic to avoid
damage to both vehicles. It is advisable to
use a tow rope made of synthetic fibre or sim-
ilarly elastic material.
Only attach the tow rope or the tow bar to the
towing eyes provided or a towing bracket.
If the vehicle is factory-equipped with a tow-
ing bracket, it is only allowed to tow with a
tow bar if this has been specially designed to
be installed with a tow hitch ›››
page 257.
When the vehicle needs to be towed:

Auxiliary heater (additional

Introduction The auxiliary heater runs on fuel from the ve-
hic
l

e's tank and can be used while you are
driving and when the vehicle is stationary.
The auxiliary heater can be switched on using
the fast heating button of the air condition-
ing controls, with the remote control or by
previously programming a departure time in
the auxiliary heater menu of the infotainment
system.
In winter, with the auxiliary heater switched
on, you can defog the windscreen and leave
it free of ice and snow (if it is a thin layer) be-
fore you start driving.
If the outside temperature is very high, the
vehicle interior can be ventilated with the en-
gine off using the auxiliary heater. WARNING
Swallowing a battery with a 20 mm diameter
or an y

other button battery can cause serious
and even fatal injuries within a very short
time.
● Always keep the remote control, keyrings
with b
atteries, the spare batteries, button
batteries and all other batteries over 20 mm
out of reach of children. ●
If

you suspect that someone may have
swallowed a battery, seek immediate medical
attention. WARNING
The auxiliary heater exhaust fumes contain
c arbon mono

xide, an odourless and colour-
less toxic gas. Carbon monoxide can cause
people to lose consciousness. It can also
cause death.
● Never switch on the auxiliary heater or
le

ave it running in enclosed spaces or areas
with no ventilation.
● Never programme the auxiliary heater so
that
it switches itself on and is running in an
enclosed space or an area with no ventila-
tion. WARNING
The components of the auxiliary heater are
e xtr

emely hot and could cause a fire.
● Always park your vehicle so that no part of
the exh
aust system can come in contact with
easily flammable materials that might be be-
low the vehicle, such as dried grass. CAUTION
Never place food, medicines or other temper-
at ur

e-sensitive objects close to the air vents.
Food, medicines and other objects sensitive
to heat or cold may be damaged or made un- suitable for use by the air coming from the
v
ent

s. Note
After switching the engine on with a 12-volt

ery that is heavily discharged or newly
changed or after a jump start some system
settings (such as the time, the date, the per-
sonalised comfort settings and the program-
ming) might be altered or deleted. Check and
correct these settings once the battery is suf-

Driving
● To s
top the braking process, release the
button or press the accelerator. WARNING
The improper use of the electronic parking
br ak

e can cause accidents and serious injury.
● Never use the electronic parking brake to
st

op the vehicle, unless it is an emergency.
Braking distances can be considerably lon-
ger, since, under certain circumstances, only
the rear wheels brake. Always use the foot
brake.
● Never accelerate from the engine when a
ge
ar range or a gear is engaged and the en-
gine is running. The vehicle could move, even
if the electronic parking brake is activated. CAUTION
To prevent the vehicle from unintentionally
mo v

ing when parking it, first apply the elec-
tronic parking brake and then remove your
foot from the brake pedal. Note
● In v

ehicles with a manual gearbox, releas-
ing the clutch and accelerating at the same
time automatically disconnects the electronic
parking brake.
● If the vehicle battery is flat, it will not be
pos
sible to disconnect the electronic parking
brake. Use the jump-start ›››
 page 58. ●
When the el ectr

onic parking brake is ap-
plied or released, noises may be heard.
● The system performs automatic and audi-
bl

e tests sporadically in the parked vehicle if
some time elapses without the electronic
parking brake being used. Parking

Always note the following points when park-
ing the vehicle: – Use the brake pedal to stop the vehicle.
– Apply the electronic parking brake.
– Put it in 1st gear.
– Switch the engine off and remove the key
from the ignition.

Turn the steering wheel
slightly to engage the steering lock.
– Never leave a vehicle key in the vehicle.
Addition
al notes on parking the vehicle on
gradients:
Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle
rolls against the kerb if it started to roll.
● If the vehicle is parked facing downhi
ll,
turn the front wheels so that they point to-
wards the kerb . ●
If the
vehicle is parked facing uphill, turn
the front wheels so that they point away from
the kerb.
● Secure the vehicle as usual by applying the
electr
onic parking brake firmly and putting it
in 1st gear. WARNING
● Tak

e measures to reduce the risk of injury
when you leave your vehicle unattended.
● Never park where the hot exhaust system
cou
ld ignite inflammable materials, such as
dry grass, low bushes, spilt fuel etc.
● Never allow vehicle occupants to remain in
the v
ehicle when it is locked. They would be
unable to open the vehicle from the inside,
and could become trapped in the vehicle in
an emergency. In the event of an emergency,
locked doors will delay assistance to vehicle
occupants.
● Never leave children alone in the vehicle.
They c
ould set the vehicle in motion, for ex-
ample, by releasing the electronic parking
brake or the gearshift lever, which would
cause the vehicle to move, but uncontrolla-
bly.
● Depending on weather conditions, it may
become e
xtremely hot or cold inside the vehi-
cle. This can be fatal. 171

Checking and refilling levels
CAUTION
● The v
ehicle is not designed for the use of
FAME fuel (biodiesel). The fuel system would
be damaged if you used biodiesel.
● Do not mix fuel additives, the so-called
“thinners”, petr
ol or similar additives with
diesel fuel.
● If poor-quality diesel fuel is used, it may be
nece
ssary to drain the fuel filter more fre-
quently than is specified in the Maintenance
Programme. We recommend having this done
by a specialised workshop. If water is allowed
to collect in the filter, this can cause engine

Introduction To reduce emissions, SCR (Selective Catalytic

an be used in vehicles with die-
sel engines. Through the special urea solu-
tion AdBlue ®
, SCR transforms nitrogen ox-
ides into nitrogen and water.

is stored in a separate tank in the

If the level of AdBlue ®

too low and the igni-
tion is switched off, it will no longer be possi-
ble to re-start the engine. Not even by jump-

is an irritant, corrosive liquid that
