7-2. Steps to take in an emergency
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
your Toyota dealer or commercial towing service before towing.
● A warning message for the hybrid system is shown on the multi-
information display and the vehicle does not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Do not tow with a sling-type truck
to prevent body damage.
If your vehicle needs to be towed
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by your Toyota dealer or a commercial towing service,
using a wheel-lift type t ruck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/
provincial and local laws.

Malfunction indicator lamp (warning buzzer)Indicates a malfunction in:
• The hybrid system;
• The electronic engine control system; or
• The electronic throttle control system; or
• The electronic hybrid transmission control system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
SRS warning light (warning buzzer)
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The SRS airbag system;
• The front passenger occupant classification system; or
• The seat belt pretensioner system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
ABS warning light (warning buzzer)
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The ABS; or
• The brake assist system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
Brake Override System/Drive- Start Control/Intelligent
Clearance Sonar warning light (warning buzzer)

When a buzzer sounds:
• Brake Override System is malfunctioning;
• Drive-Start Control is operating;
• Drive-Start Control is malfunctioning; or
• The Intelligent Clearance Sonar (if equipped) is operat- ing ( P. 300)
 Follow the instructions displayed on the multi-infor-
mation display.
When a buzzer does not sound:
Brake Override System is operating
 Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake
pedal.
Parking brake indicator (warning buzzer)*2
It is possible that the parking brake is not fully engaged or
released
 Operate the parking brake once again.
This light comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is ful ly
released, the system is operating normally.

ing) system

LDA indicator
Indicates a malfunction in the LDA
 When “LDA Unavailable” is displayed on the multi-
information display, turn the LDA system off, drive
the vehicle for a short time, and then turn the LDA
system back on. ( P. 258)
When a message other than above is displayed, fol-
low the instructions displayed in the message.

PCS warning light
Indicates a malfunction in the PCS (Pre-Collision System)
or that the system is temporarily unavailable due to the
vehicle being extremely hot/cold, or dirt around a front
sensor, etc. ( P. 251, 463)
 Follow the instructions displayed on the multi-infor-
mation display. (P. 251, 463)
If the PCS (Pre-Collision System) or VSC (Vehicle Stability
Control) system is disabled, the PCS warning light will illu-
minate.

ICS OFF indicator
When a buzzer sounds:
Indicates a malfunction in the Intelligent Clearance Sonar
system
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
When a buzzer does not sound:
Indicates that the system is temporarily unavailable, possi-
bly due to a sensor being dirty or covered with ice, etc.
 Clear the dirt, etc.

*2: Parking brake engaged warning buzzer:A buzzer will sound if the vehicle is driven at a speed of appr oximately 3
mph (5 km/h) or more.
*3: Driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt warning buzzer:
The driver’s seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the drive r that his or
her seat belt is not fastened. Once the power switch is turned to ON mode,
the buzzer sounds for 6 seconds. If the vehicle reaches a speed of 12 mph
(20 km/h), the buzzer sounds once. If the seat belt is still un fastened after
24 seconds, the buzzer will sound intermittently for 6 seconds. Then, if the
seat belt is still unfastened, the buzzer will sound in a diffe rent tone for 90
more seconds.
The front passenger’s seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the front
passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. The buzzer sounds once
if the vehicle reaches a speed of 12 mph (20 km/h). If the seat belt is still
unfastened after 24 seconds, the buzzer will sound intermittent ly for 6 sec-
onds. Then, if the seat belt is still unfastened, the buzzer wi ll sound in a dif-
ferent tone for 90 more seconds.
*4: Rear passenger’s seat belt buzzer:
The rear passenger’s seat belt buzzer sounds to alert the rear passenger
that his or her seat belt is not fastened. The buzzer sounds on ce if the
vehicle reaches a speed of 12 mph (20 km/h). If the seat belt i s still unfas-
tened after 24 seconds, the buzzer will sound intermittently fo r 6 seconds.
Then, if the seat belt is still unfastened, the buzzer will sou nd in a different
tone for 30 more seconds.

If any of the warning messages are shown again after the approp riate
actions have been performed, contact your Toyota dealer.
If a warning message is displayed
The multi-information display shows warnings of system mal-
functions, incorrectly performed operations, and messages that
indicate a need for maintena nce. When a message is shown,
perform the correction procedur e appropriate to the message.

The warning lights and warning buzzers operate as follows depending
on the content of the message. If a message indicates the need for
inspection by a dealer, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer immediately.
The operation of the warning lights and warning buzzers may dif fer
from those stated. In this case, perform the correction procedu re
according to the displayed message.

When trouble arises
■Warning messages
The warning messages explained below may differ from the actual messages
according to operation conditions and vehicle specifications.
■ System warning lights
The master warning light does not come on or flash in the following cases.
Instead, a separate system warning light will come on along wit h a message
shown on the multi-information display.
● Malfunction in the ABS
The ABS warning light comes on. ( P. 454)
● Malfunction in the brake system
The brake system warning light (yellow) comes on. ( P. 453)
● Malfunction in the tire pressure warning system
The tire pressure warning light comes on. ( P. 456)
● Remaining fuel level is low
The low fuel level warning light comes on. ( P. 456)
■ If a message instructing to refer to the Owner’s Manual is disp layed
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction .
Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your T oyota dealer.
Continuing to drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
• “Low Braking Power Stop in a Safe Place See Owner’s Manual”
• “Oil Pressure Low Stop in a Safe Place See Owner’s Manual”
• “Charging System Malfunction Stop in a Safe Place See Owner’s Man-
ual”
● If the following message is shown, there may be a malfunction.
Immediately have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
• “Hybrid System Malfunction”
• “Check Engine”
• “Hybrid Battery System Malfunction”
• “Accelerator System Malfunction”
• “Smart Key System Malfunction”
● If “Engine Coolant Temp High Stop in a Safe Place See Owner’s Manual” is
displayed, follow the instructions accordingly. ( P. 492)
● If “Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s
Manual” is displayed, follow the instructions accordingly. ( P. 434)

■If “Hybrid System Overheated Reduced Output Power” is shown
This message may be displayed when driving under severe operati ng condi-
tions. (For example, when driving up a long steep hill.)
Handling method: P. 492
■ If “Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s
Manual” is shown
The filter may be clogged, the air intake vent may be blocked or there may be
a gap in the duct.
● If the air intake vent or filter is dirty, refer to P. 434 for cleaning the air intake
vent and filter.
● If the message is being displayed and the air intake vent and f ilter are not
dirty, have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer.
■ If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Refrain From the Use of N
Position” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift lever is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) cannot be charged when the shift lever
is in N, shift the shift lever to P when the vehicle is stopped .
■ If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Shift into P to Rest art” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction battery) charge
has become extremely low because the shift lever has been left in N for a cer-
tain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
■ If “Shift to P Before Exiting Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the driver’s door is opened without t urning the
power switch off with the shift lever in any position other tha n P.
Shift the shift lever to P.
■ If “Shift Is in N Release Accelerat or Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depressed and
the shift lever is in N. Release the accelerator pedal and shif t the shift lever to
D or R.
■ If “Press Brake When Vehicle Is Stopped Hybrid System May Overh eat”
is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal is depressed to maintain
the vehicle position when stopped on a upward slope, etc.
If this continues, the hybrid system may overheat.
Release the accelerator pedal and depress the brake pedal.

When trouble arises
■If “Auto Power Off to Con serve Battery” is displayed
Power was turned off due to the automatic power off function.
Next time when starting the hybrid system, operate the hybrid s ystem for
approximately 5 minutes to recharge the 12-volt battery.
■ If “A New Key has been Registered Contact Your Dealer for Detai ls” is
displayed
This message will be displayed each time the driver’s door is opened when
the doors are unlocked from the outside for approximately one week after a
new electronic key has been registered.
If this message is displayed but you have not had a new electro nic key regis-
tered, ask your Toyota dealer to check if an unknown electronic key (other
than those in your possession) has been registered.
■ When “Headlight System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer” is displa yed
The following systems may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle i nspected by
your Toyota dealer immediately.
● The LED headlight system
● Automatic High Beam
■ “Front Camera Unavailable” or “Front Camera Unavailable Remove
Debris On Windshield” is displayed
The following systems may be suspended until the problem shown in the
message is resolved.
● PCS (Pre-Collision System)
● LDA (Lane Departure Alert with steering control)
● Dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range
● Automatic High Beam
■ If “Maintenance Required Soon” is displayed
Indicates that all maintenance according to the driven distance on the mainte-
nance schedule
* should be performed soon.
Comes on approximately 4500 miles (7200 km) after the message has been
reset.
If necessary, perform maintenance. Please reset the message aft er the main-
tenance is performed. ( P. 393)
