Before driving
●Interior buzzer sounds continuously
■Battery-saving function
The battery-saving function will be acti-
vated in order to prevent the electronic key battery and the vehicle battery from being discharged while the vehicle is not
operated for a long time.
●If the smart entry & start system has
not been used for 14 days or longer, the doors cannot be unlocked from any door except the driver’s door. In
this case, press the button on the driver’s door handle, or use the wire-less remote control or mechanical key
to unlock the doors.
■Electronic key battery-saving func- tion
●When battery-saving mode is set, bat-tery depletion is minimized by stop-ping the electronic key from receiving
radio waves.
Press twice while pressing and
holding . Confirm that the electronic
key indicator flashes 4 times.
While the battery-saving mode is set,
the smart entry & start system cannot be
used. To cancel the function, press any
of the electronic key buttons.
●Electronic keys that will not be used
for long periods of time can be set to the battery-saving mode in advance.
■Conditions affecting operation
The smart entry & start system uses
weak radio waves. In the following situa- tions, the communication between the electronic key and the vehicle may be
affected, preventing the smart entry & start system, wireless remote control and engine immobilizer system from
operating properly. (Ways of coping:  P.334)
●When the electronic key battery is depleted
●Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis-play, airport or other facility that gen-
erates strong radio waves or electrical noise
●When carrying a portable radio, cellu-lar phone, cordless phone or other wireless communication device
●When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following
metallic objects • Cards to which aluminum foil is attached
• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside• Metallic wallets or bags
•Coins • Hand warmers made of metal• Media such as CDs and DVDs
●When other wireless keys (that emit radio waves) are being used nearby
●When carrying the electronic key together with the following devices
that emit radio waves • Another vehicle’s electronic key or a

●If window tint with a metallic content or
metallic objects are attached to the rear window
●When the electronic key is placed near a battery charger or electronic devices
●When the vehicle is parked in a pay parking spot where radio waves are
emitted
If the doors cannot be locked/unlocked using the smart entry & start system,
lock/unlock the doors by performing any of the following:
●Bring the electronic key close to either front door handle and operate the entry function.
●Operate the wireless remote control.
If the doors cannot be locked/unlocked
using the above methods, use the mechanical key. ( P.334)
If the engine cannot be started using the
smart entry & start system refer to P.334.
■Note for the entry function
●Even when the electronic key is within the effective range (detection areas), the system may not operate properly
in the following cases: • The electronic key is too close to the window or outside door handle, near
the ground, or in a high place when the doors are locked or unlocked.• The electronic key is on the instru-
ment panel, luggage cover or floor, or glove box when the engine is started or engine switch modes are changed.
●Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel when exiting
the vehicle. Depending on the radio wave reception conditions, it may be detected by the antenna outside the
cabin and the door will become lock- able from the outside, possibly trap-
ping the electronic key inside the
vehicle.
●As long as the electronic key is within
the effective range, the doors may be locked or unlocked by anyone. How-ever, only the doors detecting the
electronic key can be used to unlock the vehicle.
●Even if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to start the engine if the electronic key is near
the window.
●If the wireless remote control is used
to lock the doors when the electronic key is near the vehicle, there is a pos-sibility that the door may not be
unlocked by the entry function. (Use the wireless remote control to unlock the doors.)
●If the door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is within the effec-
tive range, the door may lock and unlock repeatedly. In that case, follow the following correction procedures to
wash the vehicle: • Place the electronic key in a location 2 m (6 ft.) or more away from the vehi-
cle. (Take care to ensure that the key is not stolen.)• Set the electronic key to battery-sav-
ing mode to disable the smart entry & start system. ( P.103)
■Note for the unlocking function
●There are cases when pulling the door handle while pressing the Lock/Unlock button that the door will
not unlock. In those cases, after returning the door handle to the origi-nal position, press the Lock/Unlock
button once again and check that the doors unlock before pulling the door handle.
●If there is another electronic key in the detection area, it may take slightly lon-
ger for the doors to unlock after the Lock/Unlock button is pressed.
■When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
●To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not

leave the electronic key within 2 m (6
ft.) of the vehicle.

deactivated in advance. ( P.354)
●Setting the electronic key to battery-
saving mode helps to reduce key bat- tery depletion. ( P.103)
■To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key
when operating the system. Do not get the electronic key too close to the vehi-cle when operating the system from the
outside of the vehicle. Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key
may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The alarm may go off accidentally, or the
door lock prevention function may not operate.)

■Caution regarding interference with electronic devices
●People with implantable cardiac pacemakers, cardiac resynchroni-zation therapy-pacemakers or
implantable cardioverter defibrilla- tors should maintain a reasonable distance between themselves and
the smart entry & start system antennas. ( P.102) The radio waves may affect the
operation of such devices. If neces- sary, the entry function can be dis-abled. Ask any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer for details, such as the frequency of
radio waves and timing of the emit- ted radio waves. Then, consult your doctor to see if you should disable
the entry function.
●Users of any electrical medical
device other than implantable car- diac pacemakers, cardiac resyn-chronization therapy-pacemakers
or implantable cardioverter defibril- lators should consult the manufac-turer of the device for information
about its operation under the influ- ence of radio waves.Radio waves could have unex-
pected effects on the operation of such medical devices.
Ask any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-able repairer for details on disabling
the entry function.

Check the battery as follows.
■Battery exterior
Make sure that the battery termi-
nals are not corroded and that there
are no loose connections, cracks,
or loose clamps.

Check that the level is between the
“Upper line” and “Lower line” lines.

Add distilled water before the fluid level
drops below the “Lower line”.
■Before recharging
When recharging, the battery produces
hydrogen gas which is flammable and explosive. Therefore, observe the fol-lowing precautions before recharging:
●If recharging with the battery installed on the vehicle, be sure to disconnect
the ground cable.
●Make sure the power switch on the
charger is off when connecting and disconnecting the charger cables to the battery.
■After recharging/reconnecting the
battery (vehicles with smart entry & start system)
●Unlocking the doors using the smart entry & start system may not be possi-ble immediately after reconnecting the
battery. If this happens, use the wire- less remote control or the mechanical key to lock/unlock the doors.
●Start the engine with the engine switch in ACC. The engine may not
start with the engine switch turned off. However, the engine will operate nor-mally from the second attempt.
●The engine switch mode is recorded by the vehicle. If the battery is recon-
nected, the vehicle will return the engine switch mode to the status it was in before the battery was discon-
nected. Make sure to turn off the engine before disconnecting the bat-
tery. Take extra care when connecting the battery if the engine switch mode prior to discharge is unknown.
If the system will not start even after
multiple attempts, contact any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■Removing the battery holder

Maintenance and care
■If the key battery is depleted
The following symptoms may occur:
●The smart entry & start system (if equipped) and wireless remote control will not function properly.
●The operational range will be reduced.
 Flathead screwdriver

system), or CR2450 (vehicles
with smart entry & start system)
■Use a CR2032 (vehicles without smart entry & start system) or CR2450 (vehicles with smart entry

●Batteries can be purchased at any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer, local electrical appliance
shops or camera stores.
●Replace only with the same or equiva-
lent type recommended by the manu-
facturer.
●Dispose of used batteries according to
local laws.
Vehicles without smart entry &
start system
1 Remove the key cover.
Use a screwdriver of an appropriate size. Forcedly prying may cause the cover damaged.
To prevent damage to the key, cover the tip of the flathead screwdriver with a rag.
2 Remove the battery cover.
If the battery cover is difficult to remove, lift the edge to remove it.
3 Remove the depleted battery
using a small flathead screw-
driver.
When removing the battery, use a screwdriver of an appropriate size.

When removing the battery, use a
screwdriver of an appropriate size.
Insert a new battery with the “+” termi- nal facing up.

and mechanical key, install by
conducting step 2 and step 1
with the directions reversed.

■Removed battery and other parts
These parts are small and if swal- lowed by a child, they can cause choking. Keep away from children.
Failure to do so could result in death or serious injury.
■Battery precautions
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
●Do not swallow the battery. Doing
so may cause chemical burns.
●A coin battery or button battery is used in the wireless remote control key (vehicles without a smart entry
& start system) or electronic key (vehicles with a smart entry & start system). If a battery is swallowed, it
may cause severe chemical burns i n a s l it t l e as 2 ho u r s a n d m ay r e su lt in death or serious injury.
●Keep away new and removed bat-teries from children.
●If the cover cannot be firmly closed, stop using the wireless remote con-
trol key (vehicles without a smart entry & start system) or electronic key (vehicles with a smart entry &
start system). and stow the key in the place where children cannot reach, and then contact any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
●If you accidentally swallow a battery or put a battery into a part of your
body, get emergency medical atten- tion immediately.
■To prevent battery explosion or leakage of flammable liquid or gas
●Replace the battery with a new bat-tery of the same type. If a wrong type of battery is used, it may
explode.
●Do not expose batteries to
extremely low pressure due to high altitude or extremely high tempera-tures.
●Do not burn, break or cut a battery.
■Lithium battery precautions

■When the electronic key does not
work properly
●Make sure that the smart entry & start
system has not been deactivated in the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on. (Customizable
features: P.354)
●Check if battery-saving mode is set. If
it is set, cancel the function. ( P.103)
Use the mechanical key (P.95) in
order to perform the following oper-
ations:
1 Locks all the doors
2 Unlocks all the doors
1 Vehicles with Multidrive: Ensure
that the shift lever is in P and
depress the brake pedal.
Vehicles with manual transmis-
sion: Shift the shift lever to N
and depress the clutch pedal.
2 Touch the area behind the lock
button and unlock button on the
electronic key to the engine
switch.
When the electronic key is detected, a
buzzer sounds and the engine switch will turn to ON.
When the smart entry & start system is
deactivated in customization setting,

When trouble arises
■Starting the engine when the bat- tery is discharged
The engine cannot be started by push- starting.
■To prevent battery discharge
●Turn off the headlights and the audio system while the engine is stopped.
●Turn off any unnecessary electrical components when the vehicle is run-ning at a low speed for an extended
period, such as in heavy traffic.
■When the battery is removed or dis- charged
●Information stored in the ECU is cleared. When the battery is depleted, have the vehicle inspected at any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
●Some systems may require initializa-tion. ( P.361)
■When removing the battery termi-
nals
When the battery terminals are removed, the information stored in the
ECU is cleared. Before removing the battery terminals, contact any autho-rized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■Charging the battery
The electricity stored in the battery will
discharge gradually even when the vehi- cle is not in use, due to natural dis-charge and the draining effects of
certain electrical appliances. If the vehi- cle is left for a long time, the battery may discharge, and the engine may be
unable to start. (The battery recharges automatically during driving.)
■When recharging or replacing the battery
●In some cases, it may not be possible to unlock the doors using the smart
entry & start system when the battery is discharged. Use the wireless remote control or the mechanical key
to lock or unlock the doors.
●The engine may not start on the first attempt after the battery has
recharged but will start normally after the second attempt. This is not a mal-function.
●The engine switch mode is memo-rized by the vehicle. When the battery
is reconnected, the system will return to the mode it was in before the bat-tery was discharged. Before discon-
necting the battery, turn the engine switch off.If you are unsure what mode the
engine switch was in before the bat- tery discharged, be especially careful when reconnecting the battery.
●The Stop & Start system may not automatically stop the engine for up to
an hour.
■When replacing the battery
●Use a genuine battery specifically
designed for use with the Stop & Start system or a battery with equivalent specifications to a genuine battery. If
an unsupported battery is used, Stop & Start system functions may be restricted to protect the battery. Also,
battery performance may decrease and the engine may not be able to restart. Contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer for details.
●Use a battery that conforms to Euro-pean regulations.
●Use a battery that the case size is same as the previous one, 20 hour rate capacity (20HR) is equivalent or
greater, and performance rating (CCA) is equivalent or greater. Check the label on top of the battery for the
battery size and specifications (ex. LN2, 60Ah, 584A).• If the sizes differ, the battery cannot
be properly secured. • If the 20 hour rate capacity is low, even if the time period where the vehi-
cle is not used is a short time, the bat- tery may discharge and the engine may not be able to start.
