CLEARING CODES
1. At DLC, connect a jumper wire to terminal Tc, and another jumper wire to terminal AB. See Fig. 12
.
Turn ignition switch to ACC or ON position. Wait about 6 seconds.
2. Starting with terminal Tc, apply body ground alternately to terminal Tc and terminal AB twice each, in
cycles of 1/2 to 1 1/2 seconds. Finally, keep applying body ground to terminal Tc until air bag warning
light flashes quickly, indicating codes are cleared.
DIAGNOSIS
AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON AT ALL
11Short To Ground In Squib Circuit
12Short To Battery In Squib Circuit
14Open In D Squib Circuit
31Air Bag Sensor Assembly Malfunction
54Open In P Squib Circuit
NOTE: When alternately connecting jumper probes to terminals, simultaneously
release one probe from one terminal while connecting other probe to other
terminal. If time interval between probings is too long, codes will not clear.
WARNING:Failure to follow air bag service precautions may result in air bag
deployment and personal injury. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
. After
component replacement, perform system operational check to ensure
proper system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
.
CAUTION: Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position before disconnecting or
connecting negative battery cable. If ignition switch is in ACC or ON
position when negative battery cable is disconnected or connected, center
air bag sensor may be damaged.
NOTE: For air bag sensor connector terminal identification, see Fig. 13

TESTING
PRELIMINARY CHECK
Ensure a thorough explanation of when and how transaxle malfunction occurs is received from customer. Check
fluid level and condition. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). See appropriate ELECTRONIC
CONTROLS article. Proceed as necessary. If no codes are present, proceed with symptom diagnosis. See
TROUBLE SHOOTING
. Check throttle cable adjustment. See ON-VEHICLE SERVICE . Perform STALL
SPEED, TIME LAG and HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS as needed. After repairs are completed, perform
ROAD TEST to confirm repairs.
TIME LAG TEST
CAUTION: Perform this test at normal operating fluid temperature of 122-176°F (50-
80°C). Allow a one minute interval between tests. Record 3 measurements
and average results.

Avalon, Camry, Celica 2.2L 5S-FE, Corolla 1.6L 4A-FE & Tercel With 3-Speed
Check transmission fluid level and transmission/differential fluid level every 15,000 miles or 24 months.
Transmission/differential fluid reservoir is independent from the transmission. Normal operating conditions
service interval is not available.
Celica 1.8L 7A-FE, Corolla 1.8L 7A-FE, MR2, Paseo, RAV4 & Tercel With 4-Speed, Land Cruiser, Pickup, Previa,
Supra, Tacoma, T100 & 4Runner
Check transmission fluid level every 15,000 miles or 24 months. Differential fluid reservoir is incorporated with
the transmission. Normal operating conditions service interval is not available.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Transmission
1. Drive vehicle until engine and transmission reach normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level
surface and apply parking brake. With engine idling and brakes applied, move gearshift from Park
through Low and back to Park.
2. Check fluid level on transmission dipstick. Fluid level should be in HOT range marked on dipstick. Add
proper type of fluid if necessary. See RECOMMENDED FLUID
under LUBRICATION. DO NOT
overfill transmission.
Transmission/Differential (Avalon, Camry, Celica 2.2L 5S-FE, Corolla 1.6L 4A-FE & Tercel 3-Speed)
Remove filler plug. See Fig. 1 -3. Fluid should be level with bottom edge of filler plug hole. If fluid is low, fill
with proper type fluid until fluid is level with filler plug opening. See RECOMMENDED FLUID
under
LUBRICATION. Reinstall filler plu
g. NOTE: When checking fluid level for the transmission, if vehicle has been operating in
heavy traffic, towing a trailer or at high speeds in hot weather, wait 30 minutes
before checking the fluid level.
NOTE: Some models have a transmission/differential unit. On these models the
differential lubrication is separate from the transmission fluid. It must be
checked and filled separately.

MAINTENANCE SERVICE INFORMATION
SEVERE & NORMAL SERVICE DEFINITIONS
Service is recommended at mileage intervals based on vehicle operation and engine type. Service schedules are
based on the following primary operating conditions:
Light Service
Light, non-commercial duty for distances greater than 5 miles in temperate climates above freezing and
below 90°F (32°C).

Normal Service
Driven More Than 10 Miles Daily
No Operating Conditions From Severe Service Schedule
Severe Service (Unique Driving Conditions)
CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT
Inspect timing belt at 60,000 miles or 48 months and thereafter inspect timing belt every 15,000 miles, or 12
months. Replace belt as necessary.
The condition of camshaft drive belts should always be checked on vehicles which have more than 50,000
miles. Although some manufacturers do not recommend belt replacement at a specified mileage, others require
it at 60,000-100,000 miles. A camshaft drive belt failure may cause extensive damage to internal engine
components on most engines, although some designs do not allow piston-to-valve contact. These designs are
often called Free Wheeling.
Many manufacturers changed their maintenance and warranty schedules in the mid-1980's to reflect timing belt
inspection and/or replacement at 50,000-60,000 miles. Most service interval schedules in this manual reflect
these changes.
Belts or components should be inspected and replaced if any of the following conditions exist:
Cracks Or Tears In Belt Surface
Missing, Damaged, Cracked Or Rounded Teeth
Oil Contamination
Damaged Or Faulty Tensioners
Incorrect Tension Adjustment NOTE: Use the Severe Service schedule if the vehicle to be serviced is operated under
ANY (one or more) of these conditions:
Towing a trailer or using a camper or car-top carrier.
Repeated short trips of less than 5 miles in temperatures below freezing.
Extensive idling or low-speed driving for long distances as in heavy
commercial use such as delivery, taxi or patrol car.
Operating on rough, muddy or salt covered roads.
Operating on unpaved or dusty roads.
CAUTION: Failure to replace a faulty camshaft timing belt may result in serious
engine damage.

Check transmission fluid level every 30,000 miles or 24 months. Service interval is not available for vehicles
operated under normal conditions. Under severe conditions such as trailer towing, police, taxi, local delivery
service or operating under dusty conditions, replace transmission fluid every 30,000 miles or 24 months.
Transfer Case
Check transfer case fluid level every 30,000 miles or 24 months. Service interval is not available for vehicles
operated under normal conditions. Under severe conditions such as trailer towing, police, taxi, local delivery
service or operating under dusty conditions, replace transfer case fluid every 30,000 miles or 24 months.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Transmission/Transaxle (All Models)
Remove filler plug from side of transmission/transaxle. Fluid should be level with bottom edge of filler plug
hole. If fluid is low, fill with proper type fluid until fluid is level with filler plug opening. See
RECOMMENDED FLUID
. Reinstall filler plug.
Transfer Case (RAV4, Tacoma, Tundra & 4Runner)
Remove filler plug located on rear of transfer case. Fluid should be level with bottom edge of filler plug hole. If
fluid is low, fill with proper type fluid until fluid is level with filler plug opening. See RECOMMENDED
FLUID . Reinstall filler plug.
