pants are unable to communicate,
the operator automatically treats
the call as an emergency and con-
tacts the nearest emergency ser-
vices provider (112 system etc.) to
describe the situation and request
that assistance be sent to the loca-
tion.

QManual Emergency Calls
In the event of an emergency,
press the “SOS” button to call the
eCall control center.* The answer-
ing operator will determine your
vehicle’s location, assess the situa-
tion, and dispatch the necessary
assistance required.
Make sure to open the cover before
pressing the “SOS” button.
If you accidentally press the “SOS” but-
ton, tell the operator that you are not
experiencing an emergency.
*: In some cases, the call cannot be

When the power switch is turned to
ON, the red indicator light will illumi-
nate for 10 seconds. Then, the
green indicator light will illuminate
for 2 seconds and remain illumi-
nated if the system is functioning
properly.
The indicator lights indicate the fol-
lowing:
 If the green indicator light illumi-
nates and stays on, the system
is enabled.
 If the green indicator light flashes
twice per second, an automatic
or manual Emergency Call is
being made.
 If the red indicator light illumi-
nates at any time other than
immediately after the power
switch is turned to ON, the sys-
tem may be malfunctioning or
the backup battery may be
depleted.
 If the red indicator light blinks for
approximately 30 seconds during
an Emergency Call, the call has
been disconnected or the cellular
network signal is weak.
The service life of the backup battery
does not exceed 3 years.

QWhen the Emergency Call may
not be made
OIt may not be possible to make Emergency Calls in any of the fol-
lowing situations. In such cases, report to emergency services pro-vider (112 system etc.) by other
means such as nearby public phones.
• Even when the vehicle is in the cel-
lular phone service area, it may be difficult to connect to the eCall con-trol center if the reception is poor or
the line is busy. In such cases, even though the system attempts to connect to the eCall control center,
you may not be able to connect to the eCall control center to make Emergency Calls and contact emer-
gency services.
• When the vehicle is out of the cellu-
lar phone service area, the Emer- gency Calls cannot be made.
• When any related equipment (such as the “SOS” button panel, indicator lights, microphone, speaker, DCM,
antenna, or any wires connecting the equipment) is malfunctioning, damaged or broken, the Emer-
gency Call cannot be made.
• During an Emergency Call, the sys-
tem makes repeated attempts to connect to the eCall control center. However, if it cannot connect to the
eCall control center due to poor radio wave reception, the system may not be able to connect to the
cellular network and the call may finish without connecting. The red indicator light will blink for approxi-
mately 30 seconds to indicate this disconnection.
OIf the 12-volt battery’s voltage decreases or there is a disconnec-tion, the system may not be able to
connect to the eCall control center.
QWhen the Emergency Call sys-
tem is replaced with a new one
The Emergency Call system should be registered. Contact any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
QFor your safety
OPlease drive safely.The function of this system is to
assist you in making the Emer- gency Call in case of accidents such as traffic accidents or sudden
medical emergencies, and it does not protect the driver or passengers in any way. Please drive safely and
fasten your seatbelts at all times for your safety.
OIn case of an emergency, make lives the top priority.
OIf you smell anything burning or other unusual smells, leave the vehicle and evacuate to a safe area
immediately.
OIf the airbags deploy when the sys-
tem is operating normally, the sys- tem makes emergency call. The system also makes emergency call
when the vehicle is struck from the rear or rolls over, even if the air-bags do not deploy.
OFor safety, do not make the Emer-gency Call while driving.
Making calls during driving may cause mishandling of the steering wheel, which may lead to unex-
pected accidents. Stop the vehicle and confirm the safety of your surroundings before
making the Emergency Call.

2.1.
Any processing of personal data through the
112-based eCall in-vehicle system shall comply
with the personal data protection rules provided
for in Directives 95/46/EC and 2002/58/EC, and
in particular, shall be based on the necessity to
protect the vital interests of the individuals in
accordance with Article 7(d) of Directive
95/46/EC.

Processing of such data is strictly limited to the
purpose of handling the emergency eCall to the
single European emergency number 112.

2.3. Types of data and its recipients
2.3.1.
The 112-based eCall in-vehicle system may col-
lect and process only the following data: Vehicle
Identification Number, Vehicle type (passenger
vehicle or light commercial vehicle), Vehicle pro-
pulsion storage type (gasoline/die-
sel/CNG/LPG/electric/hydrogen), Vehicle last
three locations and direction of travel, Log file of
the automatic activation of the system and its
timestamp

Recipients of data processed by the 112-based
eCall in-vehicle system are the relevant public
safety answering points designated by the
respective public authorities of the country on
which territory they are located, to first receive
and handle eCalls to the single European emer-
gency number 112.

To prevent unexpected triggering of
the alarm and vehicle theft, make
sure of the following:
 Nobody is in the vehicle.
 The side windows and pan-
oramic moon roof (if equipped)
are closed before the alarm is
set.
 No valuables or other personal
items are left in the vehicle.
QSetting
Close the doors and hood, and lock
all the doors using the entry func-
tion or wireless remote control. The
system will be set automatically
after 30 seconds.
The indicator light changes from being
on to flashing when the system is set.
If all doors are closed with hood open,
alarm system can be set. ( P.78)
QCanceling or stopping
Do one of the following to deacti-
vate or stop the alarm:
 Unlock the doors using the entry
function or wireless remote con-
trol.
 Start the hybrid system. (The
alarm will be deactivated or
stopped after a few seconds.)
QSystem maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type alarm system.
QTriggering of the alarm
The alarm may be triggered in the fol- lowing situations:(Stopping the alarm deactivates the

OThe vehicle is jacked up.
OAn earthquake occurs or the road caves in.

QTo ensure the intrusion sensor functions correctly

ODo not spray air fresheners or other products directly into the sensor
holes.
OInstalling accessories other than
genuine Toyota parts or leaving objects between the driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat may

QRunning out of fuel
When the vehicle has run out of fuel and
the hybrid system cannot be started, refuel the vehicle with at least enough gasoline to make the low fuel level warn-
ing light ( P.515) go off. If there is only a small amount of fuel, the hybrid sys-tem may not be able to start. (The stan-
dard amount of fuel is about 8.8 L [2.3 gal., 1.9 Imp.gal.], when the vehicle is on a level surface. This value may vary
when the vehicle is on a slope. Add extra fuel when the vehicle is inclined.)
QElectromagnetic waves
OHigh voltage parts and cables on the Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles incor-porate electromagnetic shielding, and
therefore emit approximately the same amount of electromagnetic waves as conventional gasoline pow-
ered vehicles or home electronic appliances.
OYour vehicle may cause sound inter-ference in some third party-produced radio parts.
QEffect of magnetic forces
If objects that generate strong magnetic forces, such as large speakers, are placed inside the luggage compartment
or installed nearby, the generated mag- netic forces may negatively affect the hybrid system.
QHybrid battery (traction battery)
(lithium-ion battery)
The hybrid battery (traction battery) has a limited service life.
The hybrid battery (traction battery) capacity (the ability to hold a charge) reduces with time and use in the same
way as other rechargeable batteries.
The extent at which capacity reduces changes drastically depending on the
environment (ambient temperature, etc.) and usage conditions, such as how the vehicle is driven and how the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) is charged. This is a natural characteristic of lithium-ion batteries, and is not a malfunction. Also,
even though the EV driving range becomes shorter when the hybrid bat-tery (traction battery) capacity reduces,
vehicle performance does not signifi- cantly become worse.
In order to reduce the possibility of the
capacity reducing, follow the directions listed on P.133, “Capacity reduction of the hybrid battery (traction battery)”.
QStarting the hybrid system in an
extremely cold environment
When the hybrid battery (traction bat- tery) is extremely cold (below approxi-
mately -30°C [-22°F]) under the influence of the outside temperature, it may not be possible to start the hybrid
system. In this case, try to start the hybrid system again after the tempera-ture of the hybrid battery increases due
to the outside temperature increase etc.

The vehicle has high voltage DC and AC systems as well as a 12-volt sys-tem. DC and AC high voltage is very
dangerous and can cause severe burns and electric shock that may result in death or serious injury.

If the emergency shut off system
activates, your vehicle will not
restart. To restart the hybrid sys-
tem, contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
A message is automatically dis-
played when a malfunction occurs
in the hybrid system or an improper
operation is attempted.
If a warning message is shown on
the multi-information display, read
the message and follow the instruc-
tions.
QIf a warning light comes on, a warn-
ing message is displayed or the 12-
volt battery is disconnected
The hybrid system may not start. In that
case, try to start the system again. If the
“READY” indicator does not come on,
contact any authorized Toyota retailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
Primarily using EV mode and
AUTO EV/HV mode when driving in
cities and using HV mode when
driving on highways (or freeways)
can help conserve fuel and electric-
ity. (P.86)
When using Eco drive mode, the
torque corresponding to the accel-
erator pedal depression amount
can be generated more smoothly
than it is in normal conditions. In
addition, the operation of the air
conditioning system (heating/cool-
ing) will be minimized, improving
fuel and electricity economy.

For economical and ecological
driving, pay attention to the
following points:

Shift the shift lever to D when
stopped at a traffic light, or driving
in heavy traffic etc. Shift the shift
lever to P when parking. When
using the N, there is no positive
effect on fuel consumption. In the
N, the gasoline engine operates but
electricity cannot be generated.
Also, when using the air condition-
ing system, etc., the hybrid battery
(traction battery) power is con-
sumed.
Drive your vehicle smoothly.
Avoid abrupt acceleration and
deceleration. Gradual accelera-
tion and deceleration will make
more effective use of the electric
motor (traction motor) without
having to use gasoline engine
power.
Avoid repeated acceleration.
Repeated acceleration con-
sumes hybrid battery (traction
battery) power, resulting in poor
fuel consumption. Battery power
can be restored by driving with
the accelerator pedal slightly
released.
Make sure to operate the brakes
gently and a timely manner. A greater amount of electrical energy
can be regenerated when slowing
down.
Repeated acceleration and decel-
eration, as well as long waits at traf-
fic lights, will lead to high fuel and
electricity consumption. Check traf-
fic reports before leaving and avoid
delays as much as possible. When
driving in a traffic jam, gently
release the brake pedal to allow the
vehicle to move forward slightly
while avoiding overuse of the accel-
erator pedal. Doing so can help
control excessive electricity and
fuel consumption.
Control and maintain the vehicle
at a constant speed. Before stop-
ping at a toll booth or similar,
allow plenty of time to release
the accelerator and gently apply
the brakes. A greater amount of
electrical energy can be regener-
ated when slowing down.
Electricity consumption will
increase significantly when driv-
ing at high speeds in EV mode or
AUTO EV/HV mode. If there will
be a long distance to the next
external charging point after
leaving a freeway, it is recom-
mended to drive in HV mode
while on the freeway and change

drive mode, depressing the accelerator
pedal generates smooth torque that
makes it easier to operate the accelera-
tor gently.
QMaintain sufficient vehicle-to-

accelerate or decelerate

Try to maintain a fixed speed while
driving. Driving at a short vehicle-
to-vehicle distance will result in
repeating wasteful acceleration and
deceleration, which will worsen the
electrical and fuel efficiency.

The regenerative brake will operate
to convert the kinetic energy of the
vehicle into electrical energy, which
will charge the hybrid battery (trac-
tion battery).
The regeneration status can be
checked from the Hybrid System
Indicator. (P.175)When the brake pedal is depressed
lightly during deceleration, the
regeneration amount increases,
enabling more electrical energy to
be recovered.
If the brake pedal is depressed too
strongly, the recovered amount indica-
tor will reach the maximum level and
the upper limit of the recoverable
energy will be exceeded. Therefore, be
sure to operate the brake pedal early.
QUse the air conditioning sys-
tem appropriately, and also
utilize the heated steering
wheel (if equipped) and seat
heaters
In EV mode, the vehicle is cooled
and heated by electrical energy.
(Except in extremely cold tempera-
tures of approximately -10°C (14°F)
or less.)
Preventing excessive cooling or
heating of the vehicle will reduce
power consumption and improve
electrical efficiency.
The heated steering wheel (if
equipped) and seat heaters are effi-
cient heating device that directly
warm the body using less electric
power.
When used together with the air condi-
tioning system, a low temperature set-
ting can be used to improve electrical
and fuel efficiency.
QCheck the tire pressure
If the tire pressure is lower than the
specified value, it will worsen the
electrical and fuel efficiency.
