Special considerations when using Park Distance Control
x In some cases, the Park Distance Control interprets water and ice on the sensors as an obstacle.
x If the distance remains the same, the warning tone volume decreases after a few seconds. If a continuous tone sounds, its volume remains the same.
x If the vehicle moves away from the obstacle, the beeping sound stops automatically. The beep turns on again automatically if the vehicle approaches the obstacle again.
x For vehicles with automatic transmissions, there is no beeping when the transmission is in Park (P).
x The volume of the audible signals can be adjusted by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
Muting the Park Distance Control volume
You can mute the PDC beeping signals by tapping the  function key on the Radio or Navigation system screen (if applicable). Tap the function key again to reactivate the acoustic signals.
Switching Park Distance Control back on after it was switched off reactivates the volume. System malfunction warning signals cannot be switched off.
If you manually deactivate the display, PDC remains on and the sound is reactivated.
WARNING
Never rely completely on the PDC for information about people and objects that might be in the way of the vehicle and could be struck by the vehicle causing serious personal injury.
x The PDC sensors have blind spots where they cannot detect people or objects.
x Always watch for people, especially small children and animals, because the sensors may not always be able to detect them.
If you hear a long beep lasting about 3 seconds when you first turn PDC on or the indicator light in the button starts blinking, this means there is a malfunction in the Park Distance Control system. Switch off the Park Distance Control system with the button and have it immediately checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.

NOTICE
x The radar sensors in the rear bumper can be damaged or become misaligned in low-speed impacts and parking maneuvers. The system can switch itself off or may be impaired as a result.
x Always keep the rear bumper clean and free of snow and ice so that the radar sensors can function properly. Do not cover the radar sensor area.
x The rear bumper may only be painted with vehicle paint that is approved by Volkswagen. Other paints may impair the function of the Blind Spot Monitor or cause it to malfunction.
x Sunlight may reduce the visibility of the indicator light in the outside mirror.
If the system does not function as described in this chapter or if your vehicle was involved in a collision, do not use the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert. See an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have the system checked.
Indicator lights

WARNING
Poor visibility increases the risk of collisions and other accidents that cause serious person-al injuries.
x Always make sure all windows are clear of ice, snow and condensation for good visibility to the front, sides, and rear.
x Maximum heating output and defrosting performance are not possible until the engine has reached operating temperature. Wait until you have good visibility before driving off.
x Always make sure you know how to properly use the climate control system as well as the rear window defroster that you will need for good visibility.
x Never use air recirculation for long periods of time. When the air conditioner is off and recirculation mode is on, condensation can quickly form on the windows and greatly reduce visibility.
x Always switch off recirculation mode when it is not needed.
WARNING
Stale air causes driver fatigue and reduces driver alertness, which can cause accidents, colli-sions and serious personal injury.
x Never switch off the fan for a long period of time and never use air recirculation for a long period of time because no fresh air will enter the passenger compartment.
NOTICE
x If you think the air conditioner is not working properly or may be damaged, switch it off to help prevent more damage. Have the air conditioner checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
x Air conditioner repair requires specialized knowledge and special tools. Volkswagen rec-ommends that you see an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
x Do not smoke when air recirculation is switched on. Smoke drawn into the ventilation sys-tem can leave residue on the evaporator and on the dust and pollen active carbon filter, result-ing in permanent odors whenever the air conditioner is switched on.
If the air conditioner is switched off, the fresh outside air will not be dehumidified. To help keep the windows from fogging over, Volkswagen recommends leaving the air conditioner (compressor) switched on. Press the !

x The fan is switched off.
x The air conditioner fuse has blown.
x The outside air temperature is colder than about +38 °F (+3 °C).
x The air conditioner compressor has been temporarily switched off due to excessive engine coolant temperature.
x There is another malfunction in the vehicle. Have the air conditioner checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
Special considerations
When it is very hot and humid outside, water condensation can drip from the air conditioner evapora-tor and form a puddle under the vehicle. This is normal and does not indicate a leak.
The climate control system adjusts the passenger compartment temperature as fast as possible considering the outside temperature.
Due to residual moisture in the air conditioner, the windshield may fog up after the engine is started. Switch on the windshield defroster to help evaporate the condensation as quickly as possible.

WARNING
Even if empty, portable fuel containers can leak and cause a fire and serious personal inju-ries, especially in a crash.
x For your safety, we strongly recommend that you do not travel with a portable fuel con-tainer in your vehicle.
x If, under exceptional circumstances, you must transport a portable fuel container, please observe the following:
– Never fill a portable fuel container while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle (for exam-ple, in the luggage compartment or on top of the luggage compartment lid). Static electric-ity can build up while filling and can ignite fuel vapors, causing a fire.
– Always place a portable fuel container on the ground before filling. Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are highly flammable.
– Always keep the filler nozzle completely inside the portable container before and dur-ing filling.
– If filling a portable container made of metal, the filler nozzle must always be in contact with the container. This will help prevent static electricity from discharging and causing a fire.
– Always observe local and state or provincial laws about the use, storage, and transpor-tation of portable fuel containers.
– Make certain that the portable fuel container meets industry standards, such as AN-SI/ASTM F852-86.
NOTICE
x Remove fuel spills from the vehicle immediately to help prevent damage to the paint, tires, and wheel housings.
x Refueling with gasoline when your vehicle has a diesel engine or refueling with diesel fuel when your vehicle has a gasoline engine can cause very serious and expensive engine and fuel system damage that is not covered by any Volkswagen Limited Warranty.
x If you put any amount of incorrect fuel in the fuel tank, do not start the engine under any circumstances. Immediately contact the nearest authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for assistance. These fuels contain substances that can severely damage the fuel system and the engine if the engine is started.
NOTICE
If the fuel tank venting system malfunctions and the fuel tank cannot be properly vented before refueling:
x Gasoline fumes can escape from the fuel filler neck, resulting in temporary odors.
x The fuel nozzle may shut off during refueling and it will take longer to refuel the vehicle. Only in this situation can you continue to carefully refuel your vehicle after the fuel nozzle shuts off.
x See your Authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have your vehicle checked.
Fuels can pollute the environment. Spilled fuel must be collected and disposed of properly, following all applicable environmental regulations.

There is no emergency release for the fuel filler flap. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for assistance.
Indicator lights and fuel gauge

WARNING
Driving with a fuel tank that is almost empty can lead to stalling in traffic, a collision, and serious personal injuries.
x When the fuel tank is almost empty, fuel supply to the engine can be interrupted, especial-ly when driving over bumps, across slopes, and up and down hills.
x Steering and braking assistance as well as ESC and related systems will not work if the engine “sputters” or stalls due to lack of fuel.
x Always refuel when the tank is 1/4 full to reduce the risk of running out of fuel and stalling in traffic.
NOTICE
x Failure to heed warning lights or text WARNINGS can result in vehicle damage.
x Never drive until the fuel tank is completely empty. The irregular fuel supply can cause the engine to misfire. This allows unburned fuel to get into the exhaust system and damage the catalytic converter.
NOTICE
If the fuel tank venting system malfunctions and the fuel tank cannot be properly vented before refueling:
x Gasoline fumes can escape from the fuel filler neck, resulting in temporary odors.
x The fuel nozzle may shut off during refueling and it will take longer to refuel the vehicle. Only in this situation can you continue to carefully refuel your vehicle after the fuel nozzle shuts off.
x See your Authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have your vehicle checked.

Refueling

WARNING
Spilled fuel can cause fires, explosions, burns, and other severe injuries.
x Always stop refueling once the pump nozzle switches off so that the tank does not over-flow.
NOTICE
Remove fuel spills from all vehicle surfaces immediately to help prevent damage to the paint, tires, and wheel housings.
NOTICE
If the fuel tank venting system malfunctions and the fuel tank cannot be properly vented before refueling:
x Gasoline fumes can escape from the fuel filler neck, resulting in temporary odors.
x The fuel nozzle may shut off during refueling and it will take longer to refuel the vehicle. Only in this situation can you continue to carefully refuel your vehicle after the fuel nozzle shuts off.
x See your Authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have your vehicle checked.
Fuel spills may pollute the environment.
Fuel capacities

Checklist
If you are uncertain in any way, have the work done by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or author-ized Volkswagen Service Facility. Serious personal injury may result from improperly performed work. Make sure that you check the following items regularly. The best thing is to check them every time you refuel:
d Windshield washer fluid level ⇒  Windshield wipers and washer
d Engine oil level ⇒  Engine oil
d Engine coolant level ⇒  Engine coolant
d Brake fluid level ⇒  Braking and parking
d Tire pressure ⇒  Tires and wheels
d Vehicle lighting necessary for driving safety:
– Turn signals
– Low beams and high beams
– Taillights
– Brake lights
– License plate lights

WARNING
Disregarding the safety-related checklist may lead to accidents and injuries.
x Please note and follow the points listed in the checklist.

x Never use fuels that contain lead or other metals (check listing on the fuel pump). Even lead replacement gasoline (LRP fuels) contain metallic additives in high concentrations. They can damage the engine.
x Do not use fuels that fail to meet the criteria above, or with contents that cannot be identi-fied.
x If you cannot tell whether a particular fuel blend meets the criteria above, ask your service station or its fuel supplier. If you notice a loss of fuel economy or drivability and performance problems using one of these fuel blends, we recommend that you switch to unblended fuel.
x Using fuels that are different from those specified above can damage your vehicle's engine and fuel system and cause performance problems.
x Damage to the engine and fuel system and performance problems caused by using fuels that are different from those specified above or by using “starting assist fluids” are not the responsibility of Volkswagen and are not covered under the Emission warranties or any other Volkswagen Limited Warranty.
Even a single tank full of leaded fuel can do major damage to the catalytic converter and degrade its effectiveness in reducing polluting emissions.
If you notice a loss of fuel economy or drivability and performance problems using one of these fuel blends, we recommend that you switch to unblended fuel. Never use fuel line antifreeze offered for gasoline engines.
