ECO*
ECO is an innovative Volvo function for auto- matic-gearbox cars, capable of reducing fuelconsumption by up to 5%, depending on thedriver's driving style. The function gives thedriver the option of a more active environ-mentally conscious way of driving.
GeneralThe following are changedupon activation of the ECOfunction:
• Gearbox gearshift points.
• Engine management and response from the accelerator pedal.
• Start/Stop function - the engine can alsoauto-stop before the car has stopped tobeing fully stationary.
• The Eco Coast function is activated -engine braking ceases.
• Climate control system settings - someelectricity consumers are deactivated oroperate at reduced power.
NOTE
When the ECO function is activated, sev- eral parameters in the climate control sys-tem's settings are changed, and severalelectricity consumer functions are reduced- a press of the
AC button resets the cli-
mate control system, but then withreduced AC function.
ECO - Operation
ECO On/Off
ECO symbol
The ECO function is deactivated when the engine is switched off, and must therefore beactivated after each time the engine isstarted. There are exceptions for certainengines. However, it is easily verified bymeans of both the combined instrument panel
ECO symbol and the ECO button lamp
illuminating when the function is activated.
ECO function On or OffDisengaged ECO function is indicated by the combined instrument panel
ECO sym-
bol and the ECO button lamp extinguishing. The function isthen switched off until it isreactivated with the ECObutton.
Eco Coast - FunctionThe Eco Coast subfunction means in practice that engine braking is deactivated, meaning inturn that the car's kinetic energy is used tocoast for longer distances. When the driverreleases the accelerator pedal the gearbox isautomatically disengaged from the enginewhose speed is reduced to idling speed withminimum consumption. This function is intended for use in the event of an anticipated reduction in speed, e.g. toroll forward to an intersection or a red light. Eco Coast enables proactive driving where the driver can use the so-called "Pulse &Glide" technique and a minimum of braking. Combination On and Off A combination of Eco Coast and temporarily deactivated ECO function can also collec-tively contribute to reduced consumption.Accordingly:

The parking brake can also be released manually by depressing the clutch pedalinstead of the brake pedal. Volvo recom-mends that the brake pedal is used.

NOTE
For safety reasons, the parking brake is only released automatically if the engine isrunning and the driver is wearing a seat-belt. The parking brake is released imme-diately on cars with automatic gearboxwhen the accelerator pedal is depressedand the gear selector is in position D or R.
Heavy load uphillA heavy load, such as a trailer, can cause the car to roll backward when the parking brakeis released automatically on a steep incline.Avoid this by depressing the control whiledriving off. Release the control when theengine achieves traction.
Replacing the brake liningsThe rear brake linings must be replaced at aworkshop due to the design of the electricparking brake - an authorised Volvo work-shop is recommended.

Read the message in the combined instrument panel.
A flashing symbol indicates that the parking brake is applied. If the symbol flashes in any other situation then this means that a fault has arisen.
• Read the message in the combined instrument panel.
Park brake not fully releasedA fault is preventing the parking brake from being released:
• Try to apply and release the brake.
If the fault persists after a few attempts:
• Visit a workshop - an authorised Volvo workshop is recommended.
Note: A warning signal sounds if the journey is continued with this error message.

Fording
Fording means that the car is driven through a water-covered roadway. Fording must be car-ried out with great caution. The car can be driven through water at a maximum depth of 25 cm at a maximumspeed of 10 km/h. Extra caution should beexercised when passing through flowingwater. During driving in water, maintain a low speed and do not stop the car. When the water hasbeen passed, depress the brake pedal lightlyand check that full brake function is achieved.Water and mud for example can make thebrake linings wet resulting in delayed brakefunction. •Clean the electric contacts of the electric engine block heater and trailer couplingafter driving in water and mud.
• Do not let the car stand with water overthe sills for any long period of time - thiscould cause electrical malfunctions.IMPORTANT
Engine damage can occur if water enters the air filter. In depths greater than 25 cm, water could enter the transmission. This reduces thelubricating ability of the oils and shortensthe service life of these systems. In the event of the engine stalling in water, do not try restart - tow the car from thewater to a workshop - an authorised Volvoworkshop is recommended. Risk of enginebreakdown.

Overheating
Under special conditions, for example hard driving in hilly terrain and hot climate, there isa risk that the engine and drive system mayoverheat - in particular with a heavy load. For information about overheating when driv- ing with a trailer, see Driving with a trailer (p.306). • Remove any auxiliary lamps from in front of the grille when driving in hot climates.
• If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem is too high then a warning symbolis illuminated in the combined instrumentpanel's information display and a text message

speed for a few minutes in order to allow the gearbox to cool down.
• If the car overheats, the air conditioningmay be switched off temporarily.
• Do not turn the engine off immediatelyyou stop after a hard drive.
NOTE
It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to operate for a time after the engine hasbeen switched off.
Driving with open tailgate
When driving with the tailgate open, toxic exhaust fumes can be sucked into the carthrough the cargo area.
WARNING
Do not drive with an open tailgate! Toxic exhaust fumes could be drawn into the carthrough the cargo area.

Overload - starter battery
The electrical functions in the car load the starter battery (p. 361) to varying degrees.Avoid using the key position (p. 70)

the engine is switched off. Instead use the I
mode - which uses less power. Also, be aware of different accessories that load the electrical system. Do not use func-tions which use a lot of power when theengine is switched off. Examples of suchfunctions are: • ventilation fan
• headlamps
• windscreen wiper
• audio system (high volume).
If the starter battery voltage is low then the combined instrument panel's information dis- play shows the text

save mode. The energy-saving function then
shuts down certain functions or reduces cer- tain functions such as the ventilation fanand/or audio system.
–In which case, charge the battery by star- ting the engine and then running it for atleast 15 minutes - starter battery chargingis more effective during driving than run-ning the engine at idling speed while sta-tionary.

Fuel filler flap - Opening/closing
The fuel filler flap can be opened/closed as follows:
Opening/closing the fuel filler flap
Open the fuel filler flap using the button on the lighting panel - the flap opens when thebutton is released.In the combined instrument panel'sdisplay the arrow on the symbol indi-
cates which side of the car the fuel cap islocated.
• Close the fuel filler flap by pressing it in until a click confirms that it is closed.

Fuel filler flap - manual opening
The fuel filler flap can be opened manually when electric opening from the passengercompartment is not possible.
1. Open/remove the side hatch in the cargo
area (same side as fuel filler flap).
2. Expand/open a perforated section in the isolation and locate a green cord with handle.
3. Pull the cord gently straight back until the fuel filler flap folds out with a "click".
IMPORTANT
Pull the wire gently - minimal force is required to disengage the hatch lock.

Important things to consider when refuelling.
Opening/closing the fuel cap
The fuel filler cap can be attached onto the flap.
A certain overpressure may arise in the tank in the event of high outside temperatures.Open the cap slowly.
• After refuelling - refit the cap and turn it until one or more clicking sounds areheard.
Filling up with fuel
• Do not overfill the tank but fill until thepump nozzle cuts out.
NOTE
Excess fuel in the tank can overflow in hot weather.

Diesel particle filter (DPF)
Diesel cars are equipped with a particle filter, which results in more efficient emission con-trol. The particles in the exhaust gases are collec- ted in the filter during normal driving. So-called "regeneration" is started in order toburn away the particles and empty the filter.This requires the engine to have reached nor-mal operating temperature. Regeneration of the particle filter is automatic and normally takes 10-20 minutes. It maytake a little longer at a low average speed.Fuel consumption may increase slightly dur-ing regeneration.
Regeneration in cold weatherIf the car is frequently driven short distancesin cold weather then the engine does notreach normal operating temperature. Thismeans that regeneration of the diesel particlefilter does not take place and the filter is notemptied. When the filter has become approx. 80% full of particles, a yellow warning triangle isshown in the combined instrument panel, and the message

shown in its information display. Start regeneration of the filter by driving the car until the engine reaches normal operatingtemperature, preferably on a main road or motorway. The car should then be driven forapproximately 20 minutes more.
NOTE
The following may arise during regenera- tion:
• a smaller reduction of engine power may be noticed temporarily
• fuel consumption may increase tem-porarily
• a smell of burning may arise.
When regeneration is complete the warning text is cleared automatically. Use the parking heater* in cold weather - the engine then reaches normal operating tem-perature more quickly.
IMPORTANT
If the filter is completely filled with parti- cles, it may be difficult to start the engineand the filter is non-functional. Then thereis a risk that the filter will need to bereplaced.

Driving with a trailer - manual gearbox
When driving with a trailer in hilly terrain in a hot climate there may be a risk of overheating.
OverheatingWhen driving with a trailer in hilly terrain in ahot climate there may be a risk of overheat-ing. • Do not run the engine at higher revolu- tions than 4500 rpm(diesel engines: 3500 rpm) - otherwise theoil temperature may become too high.
Diesel engine 5-cyl
•In the event of a risk of overheating theoptimal speed for the engine is2300-3000 rpm for optimal circulation ofthe coolant.

Driving with a trailer - automatic gearbox
When driving with a trailer in hilly terrain in a hot climate there may be a risk of overheating.
• An automatic gearbox selects the opti- mum gear related to load and enginespeed.
• In the event of overheating a warningsymbol is illuminated in the combinedinstrument panel with a message that isshown in the information display - followthe recommendation given.
Steep inclines
•Do not lock the automatic transmission ina higher gear than the engine "can copewith" - it is not always a good idea todrive at a high gear with low engine revo-lutions.

end up in the wrong lane or leave the car- riageway. The trailer stability assist continually monitors the car's movements, particularly lateralmovements. If snaking is detected, the frontwheels are individually braked. This serves tostabilise the car/trailer combination. This isoften enough to help the driver regain controlof the car. If snaking is not eliminated the first time the trailer stability assist comes into action, thecar/trailer combination is braked with allwheels and engine power is reduced. Oncesnaking has been gradually suppressed andthe car/trailer combination is stable onceagain, the system stops regulating and thedriver once again has full control of the car.For more information, see Stability and trac-tion control system (DSTC) - operation (p.176)
MiscellaneousThe trailer stability assist can engage withinthe speed interval 60-160 km/h.
NOTE
TSA function is switched off if the driver selects Sport mode, see Stability and
traction control system (DSTC) (p. 175).
The trailer stability assist may fail to engage if the driver uses sudden steering wheel move-ments to try to rectify the snaking because in such a situation the system cannot determinewhether it is the trailer or the driver that iscausing the snaking.
When the trailer stability assist isworking, the combined instrument
panel's DSTC symbol flashes.

Towing
During towing, one vehicle is towed by another vehicle using a tow rope.
IMPORTANT
Note that the car must always be towed with the wheels rolling forward. Do not tow the vehicle at speeds higher than 80 km/h or for distances in excess of80 km.
Find out the statutory maximum speed limit for towing before towing begins.
1. Unlock the steering lock by inserting the
remote control key in the ignition switch and giving a long press on the START/
STOP ENGINE button - key position II is
activated, see Key positions (p. 70) formore information about key positions.
2. The remote control key must remain in the ignition switch while the car is beingtowed.
3. Keep the towline taut when the towing vehicle reduces speed by holding yourfoot gently pressed on the brake pedal -thereby avoiding unnecessary jerking.
4. Be prepared to brake to stop.

Tyre pressure monitoring*
Tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS) (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) 3
warns the
driver when the pressure is too low in one or more of the car's tyres. Tyre pressure monitoring uses sensors located inside the air valve in each wheel.When the car is driven at about 40 km/h thesystem detects the tyre pressure. If the pres- sure is too low then a warning lamp
in the
combined instrument panel illuminates and a message is shown in the information display. Both factory-fitted and optional wheels can be equipped with TPMS sensors in thevalves. If wheels without TPMS sensors are used or if a sensor has failed then

Service required will be shown.
Always check the system after changing a wheel in order to ensure that replacementwheels work with the system. For information on the correct tyre pressure, see Tyres - air pressure (p. 328). The system does not replace normal tyre maintenance.
IMPORTANT
If a fault should arise in the tyre pressure system a warning lamp
in the com-
bined instrument panel will illuminate and a message will be shown. This can be forvarious reasons, e.g. fitting a wheel notequipped with a sensor adapted for Vol-vo's tyre pressure monitoring system.

warns the
driver when the pressure is too low in one or more of the car's tyres. TPMS can be adjusted in order to follow Vol- vo's tyre pressure recommendations (p. 328),when driving with a heavy load for example.
NOTE
The engine must not be running when the tyres are calibrated.
The settings are made with the control in the centre console, see MY CAR (p. 103).
1. Inflate the tyres to the required pressure and select key position I or II.
2. Select the menu system MY CAR to open
the menus for tyre pressure.
3. Select
Calibrate tyre pressure.
4. Press OK.
5. Start the car and drive at least at 40 km/h for a total of at least 1 minute and check that the message disappears.
> Then the TPMS is recalibrated to thenew tyre pressure.
