Alarm signals
When the alarm (p. 171) is triggered a siren sounds and all direction indicators flash. •A siren sounds for 30 seconds or until the alarm is switched off. The siren has itsown battery and works independently ofthe car battery.
• The direction indicators flash for 5minutes or until the alarm is switched off.
Reduced alarm level
Reduced guard means that the movement and tilt detectors can be temporarily deacti-vated. To avoid accidental triggering of the alarm (p. 171) - e.g. if a dog is left in a locked car orduring transport on a car train or car ferry -temporarily deactivate the movement and tiltdetectors. The procedure is the same as with the tem- porary disengaging of deadlocks (p. 168) 5

Traction control systemThe function is active at low speed and trans- fers power from the driving wheel that is spin-ning to the one that is not.
Engine drag control (EDC)EDC (Engine Drag Control) prevents involun-tary wheel locking, e.g. after shifting down orengine braking when driving in low gears onslippery road surfaces. Involuntary wheel locking while driving can, amongst other things, impair the driver's abil-ity to steer the car.
Corner Traction Control (CTC)*CTC compensates for understeer and allowshigher than normal acceleration in a bendwithout wheelspin on the inner wheel, e.g. onan arcing motorway entrance road to quicklyreach the prevailing traffic speed.
Trailer Stability Assist 1Trailer stability assist (p. 312) function is tostabilise the car and trailer combination if itbegins to snake. For more information, seeDriving with a trailer (p. 306).

The function is deactivated if the driver selects
Sport mode.

Stability and traction control system (DSTC) - operation
The stability and traction control system (p. 175) (DSTC - Dynamic Stability & TractionControl), helps the driver to avoid skiddingand improves the car's traction.
Selection of level - Sport modeThe stability and traction control system isalways activated - it cannot be switched off. However, the driver can select the
Sport
mode, which allows for a more active driving experience. In Sport mode the system
detects whether the accelerator pedal, steer-ing wheel movements and cornering are moreactive than in normal driving and then allowscontrolled skidding with the rear section up toa certain level before it intervenes and stabil-ises the car. If the driver interrupts a controlled skid by releasing the accelerator pedal then the sta-bility and traction control system intervenesand stabilises the car. With Sport mode, maximum traction is
obtained if the car has become stuck, or when driving on a loose surface - e.g. sand ordeep snow. Sport mode is selected in the menu system

Cruise control* - managing speed
The cruise control (CC – Cruise Control) helps the driver to maintain an even speed. It ispossible to activate, set or change the speed.
Activating and setting the speedTo enable cruise control:
• Press the steering wheel button
> The cruise control symbol in the com-
bined instrument panel changes from WHITE to GREY and shows that thecruise control is in standby mode.
To activate cruise control:
• At the required speed - press the steering wheel button
or .
> The current speed is stored in the mem- ory and the combined instrument panel's marking (5) is illuminated/turns WHITE atthe selected speed.
NOTE
Cruise Control cannot be enabled at speeds below 30 km/h.
Changing the speedTo change the stored speed: • Adjust with short presses on
or -
every press gives +/- 5 km/h. The last presses made are stored in the memory.
To adjust +/- 1 km/h: •
Hold down the button and release it atthe required speed.
A temporary increase in speed with the accel- erator pedal, e.g. during overtaking, does notaffect the cruise control setting - the carreturns to the set speed when the acceleratorpedal is released.
NOTE
If any of the Cruise Control buttons are held depressed for several minutes then itis blocked and deactivated. To be able toreactivate Cruise Control, the car must bestopped and the engine restarted.

At the same time a speed range is marked:
• the higher speed with the GREEN mark- ing (6) is the pre-programmed speed
• the lower speed is the speed of the car infront.

Adaptive cruise control* - set time interval
The adaptive cruise control (ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control) helps the driver to maintain aneven speed and a safe distance from the vehi-cle ahead.
Different time intervals to thevehicle in front can beselected and shown in thecombined instrument panelas 1-5 horizontal lines - themore lines the longer thetime interval. One line corre-
sponds to approximately 1 second to thevehicle in front, 5 linesapproximately 3 seconds.
To set/change the time distance:
• Turn the thumbwheel on the steering wheel keypad (p. 190) (or use the
/buttons for cars without Speed limiter).
At low speed, when the distances are short, the adaptive cruise control increases the timeinterval slightly. The adaptive cruise control allows the time interval to vary noticeably in certain situationsin order to allow the car to follow the vehiclein front smoothly and comfortably. Note that a short time interval only allows the driver a short time to react and take action ifany unforeseen traffic problem should arise.

Adaptive cruise control* - overtaking another vehicle
The adaptive cruise control (ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control) helps the driver to maintain aneven speed and a safe distance from the vehi-cle ahead. When the car is following another vehicle and the driver indicates an impending overtaking manoeuvre with the direction indicator 11
, the
adaptive cruise control helps to briefly accel- erate the car towards the vehicle in front. This function is active at speeds above 70 km/h.
WARNING
Be aware that this function can be acti- vated in more situations other than duringovertaking, e.g. when a direction indicatoris used to indicate a change of lane or exitto another road - the car will then acceler-ate briefly.

Adaptive cruise control* - deactivate

Radar sensor
The function of the radar sensor is to detect cars or larger vehicles in the same direction,in the same lane. The radar sensor is used by the following functions: •Adaptive cruise control*

Radar sensor - limitations
A radar sensor (p. 197) has certain limitations, due to its limited field of vision for example. The capacity of the radar sensor to detect vehicles in front is reduced significantly:
• if the radar sensor becomes blocked and cannot detect other vehicles e.g. in heavyrain or slush, or if other objects have col-lected in front of the radar sensor.
NOTE
Keep the area in front of the radar sensor clean - see subheading "Maintenance" (p.217).
• if the speed of vehicles in front is signifi- cantly different from your own speed.
Field of visionThe radar sensor has a limited field of vision. In some situations another vehicle is notdetected, or the detection is made later thanexpected.

Adaptive cruise control* - fault tracing and action
The adaptive cruise control (p. 188) (ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control) helps the driver tomaintain an even speed and a safe distancefrom the vehicle ahead. If the combined instrument panel shows the message
Radar blocked See manual this means that the radar signals from the radar sensor (p. 197) are blocked and that vehiclesin front of the car cannot be detected. In turn this means that - apart from Adaptive Cruise Control - Distance Warning (p. 202)and Collision Warning (p. 212) with AutoBrake are not operating either.
The following table presents examples ofpossible causes for a message being shownalong with the appropriate action:
CauseAction
The radar surface in the grille is dirty or covered with ice or snow.Clean the radar surface in the grille from dirt, ice and snow.
Heavy rain or snow blocking the radar signals.No action. Sometimes the radar does not work during heavy rain or snowfall.
Water or snow from the road surface swirls up and blocks the radar signals.No action. Sometimes the radar does not work on a very wet or snowy road surface.
The radar surface has been cleaned but the message remains.Wait. It could take several minutes for the radar to sense that it is no longer blocked.

Adaptive cruise control* - symbols and messages
The adaptive cruise control (ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control) helps the driver to maintain an even speed and a safe distance from the vehi-cle ahead. Sometimes the adaptive cruisecontrol may display a symbol and/or text
message. Here are several examples - followthe recommendation given if appropriate:

• the radar sensor is blocked by e.g. wet snow or rain.
Radar blocked See manualThe adaptive cruise control is temporarily disengaged.
• The radar sensor is blocked and cannot detect other vehicles. For example, in the event of heavy rain or if slush has collected in front of the radar sensor.
The driver can then choose to switch to (p. 196) normal Cruise control (CC) - a text message provides information on appropriate alternatives. Read about radar sensor limitations (p. 197).

Distance Warning* - symbols and messages
Distance Warning (Distance Alert) is a function that informs the driver about the time interval to vehicles in front. The function has certainlimitations.

Fault tracing and action
If the message Windscreen Sensors
blocked is shown in the combined instru-
ment panel it indicates that the laser sensor is blocked and cannot detect vehicles in front ofthe car. This means in turn that City Safety™is not operational. The
Windscreen Sensors blocked message
is not shown for all situations in which the laser sensor is blocked. The driver musttherefore be diligent about keeping the wind-screen and area in front of the laser sensorclean. The following table presents possible causes for the message being shown, along withsuggestions for appropriate action.
CauseAction
The windscreen sur- face in front of thelaser sensor is dirty orcovered with ice orsnow.Clean the wind- screen surface infront of the sensorfrom dirt, ice andsnow.
The laser sensor field of vision is blocked.Remove the blocking object.
IMPORTANT
If there are cracks, scratches or stone chips in the windscreen in front of either ofthe laser sensor's "windows" and theycover a surface of approx. 0.5 x 3.0 mm(or larger), then a workshop must be con-tacted for replacement of the windscreen(see the illustration for sensor location (p.205)) - an authorised Volvo workshop isrecommended. Failure to take action may result in reduced performance for City Safety™. To avoid the risk of failed, deficient or reduced operation for City Safety™, thefollowing also applies:
• Volvo recommends that you do
not
repair cracks, scratches or stone chips in the area in front of the laser sensor -instead, the whole windscreen shouldbe replaced.
• Before replacing a windscreen, con-tact an authorised Volvo workshop toverify that the correct windscreen isordered and fitted.
• The same type or Volvo-approvedwindscreen wipers must be fitted dur-ing replacement.
