Steering lock
The steering lock makes steering difficult if the car is e.g. taken unlawfully. A mechanical noisecan be perceived when the steering lock locksor unlocks.
Activating the steering lockThe steering lock is activated when the car is locked from the outside and the engine isswitched off. If the car is left unlocked then thesteering lock will lock automatically after a while.
Deactivating the steering lockThe steering lock is deactivated when the car isunlocked from outside. If the car is not locked, itis sufficient that the remote control key is insidethe passenger compartment and the engine is started by turning the start knob towards START
in order to unlock the steering lock.

Using jump starting with another battery
If the starter battery is discharged then the car can be started with current from another battery.
When jump starting the car, the following steps are recommended to avoid short circuits or otherdamage:
1. Set the car's electrical system in ignition position 0.
2. Check that the donor battery has a voltage of 12 V.
3. If the donor battery is installed in another car - switch off the donor car's engine and make sure that the two cars do not touch eachother. 4. Connect one of the red jump lead's clamps
to the donor battery's positive terminal (1).
IMPORTANT
Connect the start cable carefully to avoid short circuits with other components in theengine compartment.
5. Open the positive jump-starting point's cover(2).
6. Connect the red jump lead's other clamp onto the car's positive jump-starting point (2).
7. Connect one of the black jump lead's clamps to the donor battery's negative terminal (3).
8. Connect the black jump lead's other clamp onto the car's negative jump-starting point(4).
9. Check that the jump lead clamps are affixed securely so that there are no sparks duringthe starting attempt.
10. Start the engine of the "donor car" and allow it to run a few minutes at a speed slightlyhigher than idle approx. 1500 rpm.

Gear positions for automatic gearbox
With an automatic gearbox, the system chooses the gear so that driving is optimal. The gearboxalso has a manual gearshift mode.
Gear positions in the driver display
The driver display shows the gear selector's posi- tion:
P, R, N, D or M.
In manual gearshift mode, the gear being used is also shown.
Gear positions
Park position - P
Select the P position when the car is parked or
when starting the engine. The car must be sta- tionary when the park position is selected. To be able to move the gear selector from thepark position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition position must be
II.
The gearbox is mechanically blocked when the P
position is engaged. Apply the parking brake first when the car is parked.
WARNING
Always use the parking brake when parking on an inclined surface. Engaging a gear or the automatic transmission's P position is not suf-
ficient to hold the car stationary in all situa- tions.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in P position to
allow the car to be locked and alarmed.
Reverse position - R
Select position R to reverse. The car must be sta-
tionary when reverse position is selected.
Neutral position - N
No gear is engaged and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the car is sta- tionary with the gear selector in N position.
To be able to change from the neutral position to another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition position must be II.

Gear selector inhibitorThe gear selector inhibitor prevents accidental changing between different gear positions in anautomatic gearbox.
There are two different types of gear selector inhibitor - mechanical and automatic.
Mechanical gear selector inhibitor
The gear selector can be moved forward and back freely between N and D. Other positions are
locked with a latch that is released with the inhib- itor button on the gear selector. With the inhibitor button depressed the lever can be moved forwards or backwards between P, R ,
N and D.
Automatic gear selector inhibitorThe automatic gear selector inhibitor has special safety systems.
From park position - P
To be able to move the gear selector from the P
position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition position must be II.
From neutral position - N
If the gear selector is in the N position and the
car has been stationary for at least 3 seconds (irrespective of whether the engine is running)then the gear selector is locked. To be able to move the gear selector from the N
position to another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition position must be II.
Deactivate automatic gear selector
inhibitor
If the car cannot be driven, e.g. due to a dis- charged battery, the gear selector must be moved to the
N position so that the car can be
moved.
Lift the rubber mat in the compartment in front of the gear selector. Locate the holewith a spring-loaded button in the bottom ofthe compartment.
Press a small screwdriver into the hole and hold.
Move the gear selector to position N and
release the button.
4. Put the rubber mat back in place.

Brake functions
The car's brakes are used to reduce the speed or prevent the car from rolling.
Besides the foot brake and parking brake, the car is equipped with several automatic brake assistfunctions. These can assist the driver by notneeding to keep his/her foot on the brake pedalwhen stationary at a traffic light, when starting onan uphill gradient or when driving on a downhillgradient. Depending on the car's equipment, the following auto braking functions are available:
• Automatic braking when stationary (AutoHold)
• Hill start assist (Hill Start Assist)
• Auto braking after a collision

Foot brake
The foot brake is used to reduce the car's speed while driving.
Foot brake systemThe car is equipped with two brake circuits. If a brake circuit is damaged, the brake pedal willengage deeper. Higher pressure on the pedal willtherefore be needed to produce the normal brak-ing effect. The driver's brake pedal pressure is assisted by a brake servo.
WARNING
The brake servo only works when the engine is running.
If the foot brake is used when the engine is switched off then the pedal will feel stiff and ahigher pedal pressure must be used to brake thecar. In very hilly terrain or when driving with a heavy load the brakes can be relieved by using enginebraking in manual gearshift mode. Engine brakingis most efficiently used if the same gear is useddownhill as up.
Anti-lock braking systemThe car has anti-lock brakes, Anti-lock BrakingSystem (ABS), which prevent the wheels fromlocking while braking and allows maintained steering control. Vibration may be felt in thebrake pedal when this is engaged and this is nor-mal. A short test of the ABS system is made automat- ically after the engine has been started when thedriver releases the brake pedal. A further auto-matic test of the system may be made at lowspeed. The test may be experienced as pulses inthe brake pedal.
Braking on wet roadsWhen driving for a prolonged period of time inheavy rain without braking, the braking effect maybe delayed slightly when next using the brakes.This may also be the case after a car wash. It isthen necessary to depress the brake pedal moreforcefully. You should therefore maintain agreater distance to the vehicles in front. Brake the car firmly after driving on wet roads or using a car wash. This warms up the brake discs,enabling them to dry faster and protecting themagainst corrosion. Bear in mind the current trafficsituation when braking.
Braking on salted roadsWhen driving on salted roads, a layer of salt mayform on the brake discs and brake linings. Thismay extend braking distance. You should there-fore maintain an extra large safety distance tovehicles in front. In addition, make sure you dothe following:

Parking brake The parking brake prevents the car from rolling away from stationary by means of mechanicallylocking/blocking two wheels.
The control for the parking brake is located in the tunnel console between the seats.
A faint electric motor noise can be heard when the electrically-operated parking brake is beingapplied. The noise can also be heard during theautomatic function checking of the parking brake. If the car is stationary when the parking brake is applied then it only acts on the rear wheels. If it isapplied when the car is moving then the normalfoot brake is used, i.e. the brake acts on all fourwheels. Brake function changes over to the rearwheels when the car is almost stationary.

IMPORTANT
Engine damage can occur if water enters the air filter. In depths greater than 25 cm, water could enter the transmission. This reduces the lubri-cating ability of the oils and shortens theservice life of these systems. Damage to any component, engine, transmis- sion, turbocharger, differential or its internalcomponents caused by flooding, hydrostaticlocking or oil shortage, is not covered by thewarranty. In the event of the engine stalling in water, do not try restart - tow the car from the water toa workshop - an authorised Volvo workshop isrecommended. Risk of engine breakdown.

Overheating in the engine and drive system
Under special conditions, for example hard driv- ing in hilly terrain and hot climate, there is a riskthat the engine and drive system may overheat -in particular with a heavy load.
• In the event of overheating, the engine's power may be limited temporarily.
• Remove any auxiliary lamps from in front ofthe grille when driving in hot climates.
• If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem becomes too high then a warningsymbol is illuminated and the driver display shows the message

car in a safe way and allow the engine to run at idling speed for several minutes and cooldown.

• In the event of overheating in the gearbox, analternative gear shift program will beselected. In addition, a built-in protectionfunction is activated that, amongst otherthings, illuminates a warning symbol and thedriver display shows the message

. Follow the
recommendation given, reduce speed or stop the car in a safe way and allow the engine torun at idling speed for several minutes toenable the gearbox to cool down.
• If the car overheats, the air conditioning maybe switched off temporarily.
• Do not turn the engine off immediately youstop after a hard drive.
NOTE
It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to operate for a time after the engine has beenswitched off.

Opening/closing the fuel filler flap and refuelling
The fuel tank is fitted with a coverless fuel filler system.
Opening/closing the fuel filler flapThe car must be unlocked for the fuel filler flap to be opened.
In the driver display, the arrownext to the tank symbol indi-cates which side of the car thefuel filler flap is located.
1. Open the fuel filler flap with a gentle presson the rear of the flap.
2. After refuelling is finished - close the flap with a gentle press.
Refuelling at a petrol station
Refuelling is carried out as follows.
1. Open the fuel filler flap.
2. Choose fuel that is approved for use in the car. See information on approved fuels in the sections on "Petrol" and "Diesel" respec-tively.
3. Insert the pump nozzle in the fuel filler open- ing. The filler pipe has two opening caps. Thepump nozzle must be pushed past both capsbefore refuelling is started.

2. Press and release the button - extensionmight not start if the button is pressed for too long.
> The towbar extends out and down in anunlocked position - the indicator lamp flashes orange.
WARNING
Do not press the extend/retract button if a trailer is attached to the towing bracket.
NOTE
The towbar must finish the extension proce- dure before it can then be moved to lockedposition. This procedure may take severalseconds. If the towbar is not fixed in lockedposition, wait a few seconds and try again.
3. Move the towbar to its end position, where it is secured and locked in place - the indicator lamp illuminates with a constant orangeglow.
> The towbar is ready for use.
WARNING
Take care to secure the trailer's safety cable in the intended bracket.
NOTE
Power save mode activates after a while and the indicator lamp goes out. The system isreactivated by closing and opening the tail-gate. This applies when retracting or extend-ing the towing bracket. If the car detects a connected trailer electri- cally, the indicator lamp stops illuminatingwith a constant glow.
Retracting the towing hitch
IMPORTANT
Make sure that there is no plug or adapter in the electrical socket when retracting the tow-ing bracket.
1. Open the tailgate. Press and release the but- ton on the right-hand side at the rear of the cargo area - retraction might not start if thebutton is pressed for too long.
> The towing bracket automatically lowers inan unlocked position - the indicator lamp in the button flashes orange.

2. Lock the towing bracket by moving it back to
its retracted position, where it is locked.
> The indicator lamp will now illuminate witha constant glow if the towing bracket is correctly retracted.

Driving with a trailer under special conditions
When driving with a trailer in hilly terrain in a hot climate there may be a risk of overheating.
In the event of overheating, a warning symbol illu- minates in the driver display together with a mes-sage, see section "Overheating in the engine anddrive system". The following only applies to cars with automatic gearbox. The automatic gearbox selects the optimum gear related to load and engine speed.
Steep inclinesDo not lock the automatic gearbox in a highergear than the engine "can cope with" - it is notalways a good idea to drive at a high gear withlow engine speed.
Parking on a hill1. Depress the brake pedal fully.
2. Activate the parking brake.3. Select gear position P.
4. Release the brake pedal.Block the wheels with chocks when parking a car with hitched trailer on a hill.
Starting on a hill1. Depress the brake pedal fully. 2.

Trailer Stability Assist
*
The function of the trailer stability assist Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) is to stabilise cars withattached trailers in situations where they begin
