Side impact protection (SIPS) airbagsAs an enhancement to the structural side impact protection built into your vehicle, it is also equip-ped with Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)airbags.

Location of the side impact (SIPS) airbags (front seats only)
The SIPS airbag system is designed to help increase occupant protection in the event of cer-tain side impact collisions. The SIPS airbags aredesigned to deploy only during certain side-impact collisions, depending on the crashseverity, angle, speed and point of impact.

NOTE
SIPS airbag deployment (one airbag) occurs only on the side of the vehicle affected by theimpact. The airbags are not designed todeploy in all side impact situations.
Components in the SIPS airbag systemThis SIPS airbag system consists of a gas gener- ator, the side airbag modules built into the out-board sides of both front seat backrests, andelectronic sensors/wiring.

WARNING
Any contact between the front seat backrests and the folded rear seat or a rear-facing childseat could impede the function of the WHIPSsystem. If the rear seat is folded down, theoccupied front seats must be adjusted for-ward so that they do not touch the folded rearseat.

Rollover Protection System (ROPS)
Volvo's Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS) uti- lizes the Roll Stability Control (RSC) functionand has been designed to help minimize the riskof a rollover in emergency maneuvers or if a skidshould occur.
RSC uses a gyroscopic sensor that registers the
amount of change in the lateral angle at which the vehicle is leaning. Using this information, RSCcalculates the likelihood of a rollover. If there isan imminent risk of a rollover, the stability systemis activated, power to the engine is cut and thebrakes are applied to one or more of the wheelsuntil the vehicle regains stability.

Crash mode is a feature that is triggered if one or more of the safety systems (e.g. front (p. 34) orside airbags (p. 41), an inflatable curtain (p. 42),or one or more of the seat belt pretensioners)has deployed. The collision may have damagedan important function in the vehicle, such as thefuel lines, sensors for one of the safety systems,the brake system, etc.

Crash mode – starting the vehicle
If Crash mode has been set Crash mode (p. 45)) and damage to the vehicle isminor and there is no fuel leakage, you mayattempt to start the engine.
To do so:
1. Remove the remote key from the ignition slot and open the driver's door. If a message is displayed that the ignition is on, press thestart button.
2. Close the driver's door and reinsert the remote key in the ignition slot.
3. Try to start the vehicle.
WARNING
If the message Safety mode See manual is
still displayed, the vehicle should not be driven and must be towed. Concealed faults maymake the vehicle difficult to control.

Suitable child restraints should always be used when children travel in the vehicle.

There are three main types of child restraint sys- tems: infant seats (p. 51), convertibleseats (p. 53), and booster cushions (p. 55).They are classified according to the child's ageand size. The following section provides general informa-
tion on securing a child restraint using a three-
point seat belt (p. 30). Refer to ISOFIX/LATCH lower anchors (p. 56) and Top tether anchors(p. 58) for information on securing a childrestraint using ISOFIX/LATCH lower anchorsand/or top tether anchorages.

3. Fasten the seat belt by inserting the latch plate into the buckle (lock) until a distinct click is audible.

4. Pull the shoulder section of the seat belt outas far as possible to activate the belt's auto- matic locking function.
NOTE
The locking retractor will automatically release when the seat belt is unbuckled andallowed to retract fully.
5. Press the infant seat firmly in place, let the seat belt retract and pull it taut. A sound from the seat belt retractor's automatic lockingfunction will be audible at this time and isnormal. The seat belt should now be lockedin place.

6. Push and pull the infant seat along the seatbelt path to ensure that it is held securely in place by the seat belt.

The larger, lower indicator shows the amount of engine power that has been utilized2

EXIT
EXIT functionsDepending on which function the cursor is point- ing to and the menu level, briefly pressing EXIT
will result in:
• An in-coming phone call will be rejected
• The current function will be cancelled
• Characters entered will be erased
• The most recent selection will be cancelled
• Go back/up in the menu system
Pressing and holding EXIT takes you to the nor-
mal view for MY CAR. If you are already in normal view, this will take you to the main source menu.

Information displays – ambient temperature sensor
Location of the ambient temperature sensor, A: digital instrument panel *, B: analog instrument panel
NOTE
When the ambient temperature is between 23° and 36 °F (–5° and +2 °C), a snowflakesymbol will be displayed next to the tempera-ture. This symbol serves as a warning for pos-sible slippery road surfaces. Please note that this symbol does not indicate a fault with your
vehicle. At low speeds or when the vehicle is not mov- ing, the temperature readings may be slightlyhigher than the actual ambient temperature.

Active high beams (AHB) *
AHB uses a camera at the upper edge of the windshield to detect the headlights of oncomingvehicles or the taillights of a vehicle directlyahead. When this happens, the headlights willautomatically switch from high beams to lowbeams. When the camera no longer detects theheadlights/taillights of other vehicles, your head-lights will switch back to high beams after sev-eral seconds.
To activate AHB:
• Turn the headlight control to the
posi-
tion.
The feature will begin functioning if the engine has been running for at least 20 seconds and thevehicle's speed is at least 12 mph (20 km/h).
Headlight switch in the AUTO position
Switch AHB on or off by pulling the left steering wheel lever rearward (toward the steering wheel)as far as possible and releasing it. If AHB isswitched off while the high beams are on, theheadlights will change to low beams.
Models with an analog instrument panel
When AHB is activated, the symbol will
illuminate in the instrument panel. The high beam indicator (
) in the instrument panel will also
illuminate when the high beams are on.
Models with a digital instrument panel
When AHB is activated, will illuminate as a
white symbol in the instrument panel. When the
high beams are on, the symbol will change to blue.
NOTE
• Keep the windshield in front of the cam- era free of ice, snow, dirt, etc.
• Do not mount or in any way attach any-thing on the windshield that couldobstruct the camera.
If Active high beam Temporary unavailable
Switch manually is displayed in the instrument
panel, switching between high and low beams will have to be done manually. However, the light switch can remain in the
position. The
same applies if Windscreen Sensors blocked
is displayed and the symbol is displayed.
The
symbol will go out when these mes-
sages are displayed. AHB may be temporarily unavailable (e.g., in heavy fog or rain). When AHB becomes activeagain or if the sensors in the windshield are nolonger obscured, the messages will disappear and the
symbol will illuminate.
CAUTION
In the following situations, it may be neces- sary to switch between high and low beamsmanually:
• In heavy fog or rain
• In blowing snow or slush

Home safe lighting
When you leave your vehicle at night, you can make use of the home safe lighting function toilluminate the area in front of the vehicle.
This function illuminates the headlights, parking lights, lights in the door mirrors, license platelights, front ceiling lighting and footwell lighting. These lights will remain on for 30 18
, 60 or
90 seconds. The time interval can be set in MY CAR under

1. Remove the key from the ignition slot to put
the ignition in mode 0 (see Ignition modes
(p. 80) for information about the ignition modes).
2. Pull the turn signal lever as far as possible towards the steering wheel and release it.
3. Exit the vehicle and lock the doors.

Approach lighting
Approach lighting activates the parking lights, door mirror lights, license plate lighting, domelighting and door step lighting when youapproach the vehicle.
