Driving in cold weather
Check your vehicle before the approach of cold weather.
The following advice is worth noting:
• Make sure that the engine coolant (p. 331) contains 50 percent antifreeze. Any othermixture will reduce freeze protection. Thisgives protection against freezing down to–31 °F (–35 °C). The use of "recycled" anti-freeze is not approved by Volvo. Differenttypes of antifreeze must not be mixed.
• Volvo recommends using only genuine Volvoantifreeze in your vehicle's radiator.
• Try to keep the fuel tank well filled – thishelps prevent the formation of condensationin the tank. In addition, in extremely coldweather conditions it is worthwhile to addfuel line de-icer before refueling.
• The viscosity of the engine oil is important.Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting as well as decreasingfuel consumption while the engine is warm-ing up. Full synthetic 0W-30 oil is recom-mended for driving in areas with sustainedlow temperatures.
• The load placed on the battery is greater dur-ing the winter since the windshield wipers,lighting, etc., are used more often. Moreover,the capacity of the battery decreases as thetemperature drops. In very cold weather, apoorly charged battery can freeze and be damaged. It is therefore advisable to checkthe state of charge more frequently andspray an anti-rust oil on the battery posts.
• Volvo recommends the use of snow tires onall four wheels for winter driving, see Snowtires/studded tires (p. 303).
• To prevent the washer fluid (p. 344)reservoirfrom freezing, add washer solvents contain-ing antifreeze. This is important since dirt isoften splashed on the windshield during win-ter driving, requiring the frequent use of thewashers and wipers. Volvo Washer Solventshould be diluted as follows: Down to 14 °F(–10 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 4 partswater Down to 5 °F (–15 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 3 parts water Down to 0 °F(–18 °C): 1 part washer solvent and 2 partswater Down to –18 °F (–28 °C): 1 partwasher solvent and 1 part water.
• Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
• Avoid using de-icing sprays as they cancause damage to the locks.
Refueling – fuel requirements
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gaso- line to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (detergent
additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injec- tors and intake valves clean. Consistent use ofdeposit control gasolines will help ensure gooddrivability and fuel economy. If you are not surewhether the gasoline contains deposit controladditives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE
Volvo does not recommend the use of exter- nal fuel injector cleaning systems.
Unleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleaded gasoline. U.S. andCanadian regulations require that pumps deliver-ing unleaded gasoline be labeled "UNLEADED".Only these pumps have nozzles which fit yourvehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful to dispense lea-ded fuel into a vehicle labeled "unleaded gaso-line only". Leaded gasoline damages the three-way catalytic converter and the heated oxygensensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasolinewill lessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system (p. 277) and could result in loss ofemission warranty coverage. State and local vehi-

274cle inspection programs will make detection of misfueling easier, possibly resulting in emissiontest failure for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE
Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive called methyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl(MMT). If such fuels are used, your EmissionControl System performance may be affected,and the Check Engine Light (malfunctionindicator light) located on your instrumentpanel may light. If this occurs, please returnyour vehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for service.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers, "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local laws requirethat the service pump be marked indicating useof alcohols or ethers. However, there are areas inwhich the pumps are unmarked. If you are notsure whether there is alcohol or ethers in thegasoline you buy, check with the service stationoperator. To meet seasonal air quality standards,some areas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel. Volvo allows the use of the following "oxygen- ated" fuels; however, the octane ratings (p. 274)listed must still be met.
Alcohol – Ethanol
Fuels containing up to 10% ethanol by volume may be used. Ethanol may also be referred to asEthyl alcohol, or "Gasohol". Ethers – MTBE: Fuels containing up to 15% MTBE may be used.
MethanolDo not use gasolines containing methanol(methyl alcohol, wood alcohol). This practice canresult in vehicle performance deterioration andcan damage critical parts in the fuel system. Suchdamage may not be covered under the NewVehicle Limited Warranty.
Refueling – octane rating Volvo recommends premium fuel for best per- formance, but using 87 octane

or above will
not affect engine reliability.

Tires – storage and ageWhen storing complete wheels (tires mounted on rims), they should be suspended off the flooror placed on their sides on the floor.
New Tires
Remember that tires are perishable goods. As of 2000, the manufacturing week and year (Depart-ment of Transportation (DOT) stamp) will be indi-cated with 4 digits (e.g., 1513 means that the tireillustrated was manufactured during week 15 of2013).
Tire ageTires degrade over time, even when they are not being used. It is recommended that tires gener-ally be replaced after 6 years of normal service.Heat caused by hot climates, frequent high load-ing conditions or Ultra Violet (U.V.) exposure can accelerate the aging process. The temporary spare

should also be replaced at 6-year inter-
vals, even if it has never been used. A tire's age can be determined by the DOT stamp on the sidewall (see the illustration). A tire with e.g., visible cracks or discoloration should be replaced immediately.
Storing wheels and tiresWhen storing completes wheels (tires mountedon rims), they should be suspended off the flooror placed on their sides on the floor. Tires not mounted on rims should be stored on their sides or standing upright, but should not besuspended.
CAUTION
Tires should preferably be stored in a cool, dry, dark place, and should never be stored inclose proximity to solvents, gasoline, oils, etc.

• The wheel and tire sizes for your Volvo are specified to meet stringent stabilityand handling requirements. Unapprovedwheel/tire size combinations can nega-tively affect your vehicle's stability andhandling.

Tires – tread wear indicator The tires have wear indicator strips running across or parallel to the tread.

The letters TWI are printed on the side of the tire.
When approximately 1/16" (1.6 mm) is left on the tread, these strips become visible and indi-cate that the tire should be replaced. Tires withless than 1/16" (1.6 mm) tread offer very poortraction. When replacing worn tires, it is recommended that the tire be identical in type (radial) and sizeas the one being replaced. Using a tire of thesame make (manufacturer) will prevent alterationof the driving characteristics of the vehicle.

Tires – tire economy
A smooth driving style and correct inflation pres- sure can help prolong the tires' service life.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. The tire infla- tion table, see the tire inflation decal on thedriver's door opening.
• Avoid fast starts, hard braking and tirescreeching.
• Tire wear increases with speed.
• Correct front wheel alignment is very impor-tant.
• Unbalanced wheels impair tire economy anddriving comfort.
• Tires must maintain the same direction ofrotation throughout their lifetime.
• When replacing tires, the tires with the mosttread should be mounted on the rear wheelsto reduce the chance of oversteer duringhard braking.
• Hitting curbs or potholes can damage thetires and/or wheels permanently.

Tire inflation – general information
Check tire inflation pressure regularly.

Tire inflationSee the tire inflation decal on the driver's door opening. This decal indicates the designation ofthe factory-mounted tires on your vehicle, as wellas load limits and inflation pressure.
NOTE
• The placards shown indicate inflation pressure for the tires installed on thevehicle at the factory only.
• A certain amount of air seepage from thetires occurs naturally and tire pressurefluctuates with seasonal changes in tem-perature. Always check tire pressure reg-ularly.
•Use a tire gauge to check the tire inflation pressure, including the spare, at least once amonth and before long trips. You are stronglyurged to buy a reliable tire pressure gauge,as automatic service station gauges may beinaccurate.
• Use the recommended cold inflation pres-sure for optimum tire performance and wear.
• Under-inflation or over-inflation may causeuneven treadwear patterns.
WARNING
•
Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failure and may result insevere tire cracking, tread separation, or"blow-out," with unexpected loss of vehi-cle control and increased risk of injury.
• Under-inflated tires reduce the load car-rying capacity of your vehicle. When weather temperature changes occur, tire inflation pressures also change. A 10-degreetemperature drop causes a corresponding dropof 1 psi (7 kPa) in inflation pressure. Check yourtire pressures frequently and adjust them to theproper pressure, which can be found on the vehi-cle's tire information placard or certification label.

prevent the tire pressure monitoring system from functioning properly. Always check the system's malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels onyour vehicle to ensure that the replacement oralternate tires and wheels allow the system tocontinue to function properly.

Tire Monitor - introduction Tire Monitor uses the rotational speed of the tires in combination with signal analysis of theABS sensor signals to determine if they areproperly inflated.
When a tire is under-inflated, its diameter (and consequently also its rotational speed) changes.By comparing the individual tires with each otherit is possible to determine if one or more tires areunder inflated. When low inflation pressure is detected or if the system is not functioning properly, Tire Monitorwill light up the tire pressure warning light (
) (also referred to as a telltale) in the
instrument panel and will display one of several messages in the text window, for example:

pressure and recalibrate if necessary.
NOTE

Calibrating Tire Monitor In order for Tire Monitor to work correctly, tire pressure reference values must be set. Thismust be done each time wheels or tire pressuresare changed.
Calibration1. Switch off the engine.
2. Inflate the tires to the desired pressure (con-sult tire pressure placard located on the driv- er's side B-pillar (the structural member atthe side of the vehicle) and put the ignition in mode II, see Ignition modes (p. 80).
3. Press the MY CAR button on the center
console control panel and select
Settings
Car settingsTire monitoring.
4. Press OK/MENU , select
Calibrate tire
pressure and press OK/MENU again after
all of the tires have been checked and rein- flated.
5. Drive away. > The calibration process will be completedwhile driving and will be interrupted if thevehicle is parked and the engine isswitched off. Calibration continues auto-matically when driving resumes. The sys-tem will not give any confirmation whencalibration is finished although it will stateif calibration fails. When driving with heavy loads or at sustainedhighway speeds, the tire pressure should beadjusted to the recommended inflation pressuresaccording to the tire inflation pressure placardlocated on the driver's side B-pillar (the structuralmember at the side of the vehicle, at the rear ofthe driver's door opening) or to the tire inflationpressure table in the owner's information. After adjusting inflation pressure, repeat steps 1-5 above.
NOTE
Always remember to calibrate Tire Monitor when the wheels have been changed or thetire pressure has been corrected according totire pressure placard or tire pressure table. Ifcorrect reference values have not been set,the system cannot issue low tire pressurealerts correctly.
Tire Monitor status information
The current status of the system and the tires is indicated by color-coded graphics.
This status can be displayed by pressing the MY
CAR button on the center console and going to
SettingsCar settingsTire monitoring.
The following color-coded graphics indicate:
• All green
: the system is operational and all
tire pressures are at or above the recom- mended levels.
• One yellow wheel
: the tire indicated is
under-inflated.
• All wheels yellow
: two or more tires are
under-inflated
• All wheels gray
: the system is currently
unavailable. It might be necessary to drive ata speed of at least 20 mph (30 km/h) forseveral minutes for the system to becomeoperational.
• All wheels gray in combination with the message

Erasing warning messagesTo erase a low tire pressure message and turn off the telltale:
1. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the infla- tion pressure of all four tires.
2. Re-inflate the tires to the correct pressure (consult the tire pressure decal on the driv- er's door opening.
3. Recalibrate Tire Monitor, see Calibrating Tire Monitor (p. 306).
NOTE
To help avoid incorrect tire inflation pressure, only inflate the tires when they are cold. Thetires are considered to be cold when theyhave the same temperature as the surround-ing (ambient) air. This temperature is normallyreached after the vehicle has been parked forat least 3 hours. After driving a distance ofapproximately 1 mile (1.6 km), the tires areconsidered to be hot.
CAUTION
• After inflating the tires, always reinstall the valve cap to help avoid damage to thevalve from dirt, gravel, etc.
• Use plastic valve caps only. Metal capscould corrode and become difficult toremove.
WARNING
•

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – general information TPMS uses sensors mounted in the tire valves to check inflation pressure levels. When thevehicle is moving at a speed of approximately20 mph (30 km/h) or faster, these sensorstransmit inflation pressure data to a receiverlocated in the vehicle.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – changing wheels
Please keep the following in mind when chang- ing or replacing the factory installed TPMSwheels/tires on the vehicle:
• Not all aftermarket wheels are equipped withTPMS sensors in the valves.
• If the vehicle is equipped with a temporaryspare tire, this tire does not have a TPMSsensor.
• If wheels without TPMS sensors are moun-ted on the vehicle, a text message will dis-played in the instrument panel each time thevehicle is driven above 20 mph (30 km/h) for10 minutes or more.
• Once TPMS sensors are properly installed,the warning message should not reappear. Ifthe message is still displayed, drive the vehi-cle for several minutes at a speed of 20 mph(30 km/h) or faster to erase the message.
• Volvo recommends that TPMS sensors befitted on all wheels used on the vehicle,including winter tires. Volvo does not recom-mend moving sensors back and forthbetween sets of wheels.

CAUTION
When inflating tires, press the pump's mouth- piece straight onto the valve to help avoidbending or otherwise damaging the valve.
CAUTION
•After inflating the tires, always reinstall the valve cap to help avoid damage to thevalve from dirt, gravel, etc.

NOTE

If you change to tires with a different dimension than the factory-installed ones,the TPMS system must be reconfiguredfor these tires. This must be done by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
• If a tire is changed, or if the TPMS sensoris moved to another wheel, the sensor'sseal, nut, and valve core should bereplaced.
• When installing TPMS sensors, the vehi-cle must be parked for at least15 minutes with the ignition off. If thevehicle is driven within 15 minutes, aTPMS error message will be displayed.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – recalibrating
In certain cases, it may be necessary to recali- brate TPMS to conform to Volvo's recom-mended tire inflation pressures (see the tire infla-tion decal on the driver's door opening), forexample, if higher inflation pressure is necessarywhen transporting heavy loads.
Recalibrating TPMS (Canadian models
only) *
This is done in the vehicle's menu system. To recalibrate:
1. Switch off the engine.
2. Inflate the tires to the desired pressure and
put the ignition in mode I or II (see Ignition
modes (p. 80) for additional information).
3. Press the MY CAR key in the center console
control panel and select
SettingsCar
settings
Tire pressure.
4. Press OK/MENU , select
Calibrate tire
pressure and press OK/MENU again.
5. Drive the vehicle at a speed above 20 mph (30 km/h) continuously for at least 10 minutes.
> Calibration is done automatically once ini-tiated by the driver and the system does not give any confirmation when calibrationis finished.
