WARNING
When Pilot Assist follows another vehicle atspeeds over approx. 30 km/h (20 mph) andchanges target vehicle – from a moving vehi-cle to a stationary one – Pilot Assist willignore the stationary vehicle and insteadaccelerate to the stored speed.
The driver must then intervene and applythe brakes.
Automatic standby mode when switching
targets
Pilot Assist disengages and goes into standbymode if:
your vehicle's speed goes below 5 km/h(3 mph) and Pilot Assist cannot determine ifthe target object is a stationary vehicle oranother object, e.g. a speed bump.
your vehicle's speed goes under 5 km/h(3 mph) and the vehicle ahead turns so thatPilot Assist no longer has a vehicle to follow.

Auto-hold braking with Pilot Assist
Pilot Assist has a special braking function inslow traffic and at a standstill.
Braking function in slow traffic and at a
standstill
In slow-moving, stop-and-go traffic or when stop-ped at a traffic light, driving will resume automati-cally if the vehicle is stopped for less thanapprox. 3 seconds. If it takes more than 3 sec-onds for the vehicle ahead to begin moving again,Pilot Assist will go into standby mode and theAuto-hold brake function will activate.
–Pilot Assist can be reactivated by:
Pressing the button on the steeringwheel keypad.
Pressing the accelerator pedal.
>Pilot Assist will resume following the vehi-cle ahead if it begins to move withinapprox. 6 seconds.
NOTE
Pilot Assist can keep the vehicle stationaryfor no more than 5 minutes – after that timethe parking brake is applied and the functionis deactivated.
The parking brake must be released beforePilot Assist can be reactivated.
Deactivation of the Auto-hold brake function
In certain situations, Auto-hold will be deactivatedwhen the vehicle is at a standstill and Pilot Assistwill go into standby mode. This means that thebrakes will be released and the vehicle couldbegin to roll. The driver must actively apply thebrakes to keep the vehicle stationary.
This can occur if:
the driver depresses the brake pedal
the parking brake is applied
the gear selector is moved to the P, N or Rpositions
the driver puts Pilot Assist in standby mode.
Auto Activate Parking Brake
In certain situations, the parking brake will beapplied to keep the vehicle at a standstill.
This occurs if Pilot Assist is keeping the vehiclestationary using the brakes and:
the driver opens the door or unbuckleshis/her seat belt
Pilot Assist has kept the vehicle at a stand-still for more than approx. 5 minutes
the brakes overheat
the driver switches off the engine manually.

Selecting guidance to a rest area ifthe Driver Alert Control warning hasbeen given
The Rest Stop Guidance function can beswitched on or off.
In vehicles equipped with Sensus Navigation*, thedriver can activate a guide that can automaticallysuggest a suitable rest stop if the DAC warningis given.
To select Rest Stop Guidance:
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Select My CarIntelliSafeDriver AlertControl.
3.Select/deselect Rest Stop Guidance toactivate/deactivate the function.

Driver Alert Control limitations
Driver Alert Control (DAC) functionality may bereduced in certain situations.
In certain situations, the system may provide awarning even if it has not detected a change indriving behavior, e.g.:
in strong crosswinds
on grooved road surfaces.
WARNING
In certain cases, driving behavior might not beaffected despite the driver's fatigue – whenusing the Pilot Assist function – resulting inthe driver not getting a warning from DAC.
It is therefore very important to always stopand take a break at the slightest sign of fati-gue, regardless of whether the DAC functionhas issued a warning or not.
NOTE
The function uses the vehicle's camera unit,which has some general limitations – see thesection "Camera unit limitations".

Lane Keeping Aid
Lane Keeping Aid (LKA103) is designed toactively steer the vehicle on freeways, highwaysand other major roads to help the driver reducethe risk of the vehicle unintentionally veering outof the lane.
Lake Keeping Assistance steers the vehicle backinto the lane and/or alerts the driver using vibra-tions in the steering wheel.
Lane Keeping Aid is active at speeds between65-200 km/h (40-125 mph) on roads withclearly visible traffic lane marker lines.
On narrow roads, the function may be unavailableand go into standby mode. The function willbecome available again when the road becomessufficiently wide.
A camera monitors the road/traffic lane's marker lines.

If the vehicle is equipped with Park Assist, dis-tances will be shown in the 360° view with col-ored fields for each sensor that has detected anobstacle.
Front and rear sensors
The screen can display colored sensor fields on thevehicle symbol119.
The front and rear fields change colors (fromYELLOW to ORANGE to RED) as the vehiclemoves closer to an obstacle.

The parking sequence is cancelled
A parking sequence will be cancelled if:
the driver moves the steering wheel
the vehicle's speed exceeds 7 km/h (4 mph)
the driver taps Cancel in the center display
when the anti-lock brakes or the Electronicstability control are engaged - e.g. when awheel loses grip on a slippery road
when the power steering works at reducedpower - e.g. during cooling due to overheat-ing (see section "Speed-dependent steeringforce").
A message in the center display will explain whythe parking sequence was cancelled.
CAUTION
Under certain circumstances, PAP may not beable to find parking spaces – one reason maybe that the sensors are disrupted by externalsound sources that emit the same ultrasonicfrequencies that the system works with.
Examples of such sources include horns, wettires on asphalt, pneumatic brakes, exhaustnoise from motorcycles, etc.
NOTE
Dirt, ice and snow covering the sensorsreduce their function and can make measure-ment impossible.
Driver responsibility
The driver should keep in mind that PAP is aparking aid ‒ not an infallible fully automatic sys-tem. The driver must always be prepared to takecontrol and cancel a parking sequence if neces-sary.
There are a number of things to keep in mindwhen parking, including:
The driver is always responsible for determin-ing if the space suggested by PAP is suita-ble for parking.
Do not use PAP when using snow chains ora temporary spare tire.
Do not use PAP if there are any objects pro-truding from the vehicle.
Heavy rain or snowfall may inhibit PAP's abil-ity to accurately measure a parking space.
While searching and measuring the parkingspace, PAP may be unable to detect objectslocated far into the space.
PAP may not suggest parking spaces onnarrow streets if it does not detect sufficientspace for maneuvering the vehicle.
Use approved tires125 inflated to the correcttire pressure because this affects PAP's abil-ity to provide parking assistance.
PAP's function is based on the way the vehi-cles are parked behind and in front of yourparking space. If they are, for example,parked too close to the curb, there is a riskthat your vehicle's tires or wheel rims couldbe damaged by the curb during the parkingprocedure.
Perpendicular parking spaces may not bedetected or may be suggested unnecessarilyif a parked vehicle is sticking out more thanother parked vehicles.
PAP is intended to provide parking assis-tance on straight streets, not sections ofstreet with sharp curves or bends. Alwaysmake sure that your vehicle is parallel to rel-evant parking spaces when PAP is measur-ing the parking space.
CAUTION
Switching to another approved wheel and/ortire dimension could change the tire circum-ference, which would then require the PAPsystem to be updated. Consult a workshop –an authorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's driveline(power transmission) between the engine andthe drive wheels. The function of the transmis-sion is to change gears depending on speedand power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic transmis-sion and an electric motor for rear-wheel drive.The number of gears allows the engine's torqueand power band to be effectively utilized. Two ofthe gears are overdrive gears that save fuel whendriving at a constant engine speed. The steeringwheel paddles* can be used to shift up or downmanually. The instrument panel shows the gearcurrently in use.
CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of thetransmission to help avoid damage to any ofthe drive system components. If there is a riskof overheating, a warning symbol will appearin the instrument panel and a text messagewill be displayed. Follow the recommenda-tions given.

If a problem should occur with the transmission, asymbol and a message will appear in the instru-ment panel.

Using the steering wheel paddles*to shift
The steering wheel paddles are a supplement tothe gear selector and make it possible to shiftmanually without removing your hands from thesteering wheel.
Activating the steering wheel paddles
In order to shift gears using the paddles, theymust first be activated:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steeringwheel.
>A number in the instrument panel indi-cates the current gear being used.
Instrument panel when the paddles are activated forshifting.
Change
To shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steeringwheel and then release.
"-": Shift down one gear.
"+": Shift up one gear.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is within thepermissible range for the selected gear, a gearshift will take place each time a paddle is pulled.
After each gear shift, a number indicating thecurrent gear will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.
Turning off Start/Stop
Manual deactivation in gear D and B
–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the rightpaddle (+) toward the steering wheel andholding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instrumentpanel.
>The transmission will revert to gear D or Bdepending on which gear was selectedbefore the paddles were activated.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddlesare deactivated after a short period of time if theyare not used. The number of the current gear willno longer be displayed in the instrument panel.
In gear position B, the paddles will not activateautomatically.

This drive mode is optimized for maximum controlwhen driving at low speeds on very poor roads or
difficult terrain. It raises the chassis3, reducesdriveline throttle response, and locks the vehiclein all-wheel drive. The Hill Descent Control func-tion facilitates controlled driving on steep down-grades.
NOTE
This drive mode is not designed to be usedfor normal street driving.
NOTE
Due to the increased ground clearance, if theOFF ROAD mode was selected when theengine was switched off, the suspension willlower when the engine is restarted.
CAUTION
Do not use the OFF ROAD drive mode whentowing a trailer without an electrical connec-tion. This could result in damage to the pneu-matic suspension system's bellows.
AWD
Improves the vehicle's traction and handlingby increasing all-wheel drive.
This drive mode locks the vehicle in all-wheeldrive. An optimal distribution between front andrear axle torque helps provide the best possiblecontrol, stability and traction, e.g. on slipperyroads or when towing a heavy trailer or anothervehicle. The AWD drive mode is always availableregardless of the hybrid battery's charge status.
Both the combustion engine and the electricmotor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption.
In the other drive modes, the vehicle automati-cally adapts the need for all-wheel drive accord-ing to the road surface, and can activate the elec-tric motor or start the combustion engine as nee-ded.
POWER
Power mode is designed to provide sportierdriving characteristics and a faster accelera-tion response.
This drive mode maximizes the combined powerfrom the combustion engine and the electricmotor by providing power to both the front andrear wheels. Gear shifting will be faster and moredistinct and the transmission will prioritize gearswith a higher traction force. Steering response isfaster, suspension is stiffer and ground clearance
is lower3 to help reduce body roll when cornering.
Both the combustion engine and the electricmotor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption.
This drive mode is optimized for maximum per-formance and throttle response. It changes thethrottle response, gear shifting program andturbo boost system. Chassis settings and steer-ing and brake response are also optimized. ThePower drive mode is always available regardlessof the hybrid battery's charge status.

Changing drive mode
Select the drive mode that is best suited to thecurrent driving conditions.
The drive mode is changed using the control inthe tunnel console.
Keep in mind that not all drive modes are availa-ble in all situations.
To change drive mode:
1.Press the DRIVE MODE control.
>A pop-up menu will appear in the centerdisplay.
2. Roll the wheel upward or downward to thedesired drive mode.
3. Press the drive mode control or tap its buttonin the center display to confirm the selection.
> The selected drive mode is shown in theinstrument panel.
If a drive mode is grayed out in the pop-up menu,it cannot be selected.

There is a function button for driving at lowspeeds with Hill Descent Control in the centerdisplay's Function view if the vehicle is notequipped with a drive mode control in the tunnelconsole.

Hill Descent Control
The function for assisting when driving downhill,Hill Descent Control (HDC), is a low-speedfunction with increased engine braking. Thefunction makes it possible to increase ordecrease the vehicle's speed on steep downhillgradients by only using the accelerator pedal,without applying the brakes.
The function is included in the Off Road drivemode.
HDC is designed for driving on rough roads atlow speeds and downhill gradients with slipperyor otherwise difficult road surfaces. The driverdoes not need to use the brake pedal but caninstead focus on steering.
WARNING
HDC is only intended to be a supplementarybraking aid and it does not function in all sit-uations.
The driver is always ultimately responsible foroperating the vehicle in a safe manner.
Function
Hill Descent Control allows the vehicle to moveforward or backward at very low speeds assistedby the brake system. The driver can increase thespeed by pressing the accelerator pedal. Whenthe accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle willreturn to very low speed regardless of how steep
the hill is and without the brakes needing to beapplied. The brake lights will illuminate when thefunction is activated.
The driver can brake to stop or slow the vehicleat any time by depressing the brake pedal.
HDC is activated along with Low Speed Control(LSC), which facilitates and improves traction andcontrol on rough and slippery surfaces. The sys-tem is intended to be used at low speeds, up toapproximately 40 km/h (25 mph).
To keep in mind when using HDC
If the function is switched off while driving ona steep downhill gradient, braking effect willbe gradually reduced.
HDC can be used in gear positions D and R,and in manual gears 1 or 2.
It is not possible to manually shift to thirdgear or higher when HDC is active.
NOTE
When LSC with HDC is activated in the OFFROAD drive mode, the feel of the acceleratorpedal and engine response will change.
