WARNING!
l Please note that the lowest head restraint position is only intended for\
use when the backrest is to
be folded down, or when the seat is not occupied.
l The head restraint is intended to help protect the head/neck in a collis\
ion. Ensure that it is properly
adjusted for the occupant of the seat.

Driver's side airbag - in
steering wheel hub
Passenger's side airbag - above
glove compartment
As an enhancement to the three-point seat belt system, your Volvo is equ\
ipped with a Supplemental
Restraint System (SRS). The Volvo SRS consists of an airbag (2) on b\
oth the driver's and passenger's
sides and seat belt tensioners in both front door pillars (4). The sys\
tem is designed to supplement the
protection provided by the three-point seat belt system. All three rear \
seat belts are also equipped with
tensioners.
The SRS system is indicated by the "SRS" embossed on the steering wheel \
pad and above the glove
compartment, and by decals on both sun visors and on the front and far r\
ight side of the dash.
The airbags are folded and located in the steering wheel hub and above t\
he glove compartment. They are
designed to deploy during certain frontal or front-angular collisions, i\
mpacts, or decelerations,
depending on the crash severity, angle, speed and object impacted. The a\
irbags may also deploy in
certain non-frontal collisions where rapid deceleration occurs.
The airbag system includes gas generators (1) surrounded by the airbag\
s (2) and front seat belt
tensioners for both of the front seats (4). To deploy the system, the \
sensor (3) activates the gas
generators causing the airbags to be inflated with nitrogen gas. As the \
movement of the seats' occupants
compresses the airbags, some of the gas is expelled at a controlled rate\
to provide better cushioning.
Both seat belt tensioners also deploy, minimizing any seat belt slack.

If the inflatable curtain deploys, it remains inflated for approximately\
3 seconds.
WARNING!
l The IC system is a supplement to the Side Impact Protection System. It i\
s not designed to deploy
during collisions from the front or rear of the car or in rollover situa\
tions.
l Never try to open or repair any components of the IC system. This should\
be done only by an
authorized Volvo service technician.
l The inflatable curtains are designed to deploy only during certain side-\
impact collisions, depending
on the crash severity, angle, speed and impact. The inflatable curtains \
are not designed to deploy in
all side impact situations.
l In order for the IC to provide its best protection, both front seat occu\
pants and both outboard rear
seat occupants should sit in an upright position with the seat belt prop\
erly fastened; adults using the
seat belt and children using the proper child restraint system. Only adu\
lts should sit in the front seats.
Children must never be allowed in the front passenger seat. See
page 14 for guidelines. Failure to
follow these instructions can result in injury to the vehicle occupants.\
l When the rear seat backrest(s) are folded down, the car should not be \
loaded to a level higher than
2 in. (5 cm) below the upper edge of the rear passenger door windows. \
Objects placed higher than this
level could impede the function of the inflatable curtain.

Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) - front seats only
The WHIPS system consists of specially designed hinges and brackets on t\
he front seat backrests and
head restraints designed to help absorb some of the energy generated in \
a collision from the rear ("rear-
ended").
In the event of a collision of this type, the hinges and brackets of the\
front seat backrests are designed to
change position slightly to allow the backrest/head restraint to help su\
pport the occupant's head before
moving slightly rearward. This movement helps absorb some of the forces \
that could result in the
whiplash effect.
Do not wedge boxes, suitcases, etc. behind front seats
WARNING!
l Any contact between the front seat backrests and the folded rear seat co\
uld impede the function of
the WHIPS system. If the rear seat is folded down, the occupied front se\
ats must be adjusted forward
so that they do not touch the folded rear seat.
l Boxes, suitcases, etc. wedged behind the front seats (see illustration \
above) could impede the
function of the WHIPS system.
l The WHIPS system is designed to supplement the other safety systems in y\
our car. For this system
to function properly, the three-point seat belt must be worn. Please be \
aware that no system can
prevent all possible injuries that may occur in an accident.
l If your car has been involved in a collision, the front seat backrests m\
ust be inspected by an
authorized Volvo retailer even if the seats appear to be undamaged. Cert\
ain components in the

WHIPS system may need to be replaced. Do not attempt to service any comp\
onent in the WHIPS
system yourself.
l If the rear seat backrests are folded down, cargo must be secured to pre\
vent it from sliding forward
against the front seat backrests in the event of a collision from the re\
ar. This could interfere with the
action of the WHIPS system.
l The WHIPS system is designed to function in certain collisions from the \
rear, depending on the
crash severity, angle and speed.
l Occupants in the front seats must never sit out of position. The occupan\
t's back must be as upright
as comfort allows and be against the seat back with the seat belt proper\
ly fastened.

Folding front seat backrest
The passenger seat backrest can be folded down to the horizontal positio\
n for carrying long loads. To
fold down the backrest:
l Move the seat as far rearward as possible
l Adjust the backrest tilt to the most upright position
l Lift the catches on the lower rear side of the backrest
l Without releasing the catches, push the backrest forward
l Move the seat as far forward as possible
WARNING!
Cover sharp edges on the load to help prevent injury to occupants. Secur\
e the load to help prevent
shifting during sudden stops.

WARNING!
The red lock indicator is VISIBLE (B) when the backrest is NOT locked in position and not vi\
sible
(A) when the backrest is correctly locked in place. When the backrest \
is in the upright position, it
must always be correctly locked in place.
When the rear seat is folded down, do not place heavy objects against th\
e backs of the front seats.
This places a severe strain on the folded down backrest of the rear seat\
. Be sure to secure cargo.
Cargo must not be stacked higher than the top of seatbacks. This will re\
duce the possibility of
luggage, etc. becoming projectiles during sudden maneuvers, rapid brakin\
g or an accident.

WARNING!
The nylon cargo net must not be used when the optional rear-facing auxil\
iary child seat in the cargo
area is in use.
When not in use, the cargo net should not be stored unattached in the ca\
r to prevent it from being
thrown forward in the event of a sudden stop, etc.
CAUTION:
l If the net is installed in the forward position and the rear seat cushio\
ns are folded forward, the net
should be positioned so that it is in front of the rear seat cushions bu\
t behind the front seat backrests (C).
l The eyelets on the floor of the car under the front seats must not be us\
ed to secure the lower straps of
the cargo net. If these eyelets are used and the front seats are moved b\
ack, the cargo net or upper
brackets may be damaged.
Folding and storing the cargo net
The cargo net can be folded and stored under the floor of the cargo area\
on cars not equipped with the
optional auxiliary rear-facing child seat or the optional bass speaker.
Press the buttons on the hinges at the center of the upper and lower rod\
s. This releases the hinges so that
the net can be folded.
