Automatic function
The parking brake is applied automatically:
•If the Auto Hold function is activated and thevehicle has been stationary for approx.5 minutes.
•If the gear selector is moved to P on a steephill.
•When the engine is turned off (this functioncan be selected, see "Parking brake set-tings" below).
Emergency braking
In an emergency, the parking brake can beapplied when the vehicle is moving by pressingand holding up the control. Braking will be inter-rupted when the control is released.
An audible signal will sound during this proce-dure if the vehicle is moving at higher speeds.
Releasing the parking brake
Releasing manually
1. Press firmly on the brake pedal.
2. Press the control.
> This releases the parking brake and thesymbol in the instrument panel will go out.
Releasing automatically
1. The driver must fasten his/her seat belt.
2. Start the engine.
3. Press firmly on the brake pedal.
4.Move the gear selector to D or R and pressthe accelerator pedal.
> This releases the parking brake and thesymbol in the instrument panel will go out.
NOTE
•For safety reasons, the parking brake isonly released automatically if the engineis running and the driver is wearing a seatbelt.
•The electric parking brake will bereleased immediately when the accelera-tor pedal is pressed and the gear selectoris in position D or R.
Parking on a hill
Put the gear selector in P.
•If the vehicle is pointing uphill, turn the frontwheels so that they point away from the curb.
•If the vehicle is pointing downhill, turn thefront wheels so that they point toward thecurb.
The parking brake should also be applied.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when parkingon hills or uneven surfaces.

Heavy load uphill
A heavy load, such as a trailer, can cause thevehicle to roll backward when the parking brakeis released automatically on a steep incline. Tohelp avoid this:
1. Keep the electric parking brake controlpushed in.
2. While pressing the accelerator pedal to pullaway, release the parking brake control onlyafter the vehicle begins to move.

Automatically setting the parking brake can beturned on or off in the center display's Top view.
1.Tap Settings in Top view.
2.Tap My CarElectric Parking Brake anddeselect Auto Activate Parking Brake.

Parking brake malfunctions
If it has not been possible to apply or release theparking brake after several attempts, consult atrained and authorized Volvo service technicianor retailer.
An audible signal will sound if the parking brakeis applied when the vehicle is being driven. If thevehicle must be parked while the parking brake isnot functioning properly:
•Put the gear selector in P.
•If the vehicle is pointing uphill, turn the frontwheels so that they point away from the curb.
•If the vehicle is pointing downhill, turn thefront wheels so that they point toward thecurb.
•Put the gear selector in P.
Low battery charge level
If the battery is discharged, the parking brakecannot be operated. Connect an auxiliary batteryto the vehicle.
Replacing brake pads
The rear brake pads have to be replaced by atrained and authorized Volvo service techniciandue to the design of the electric parking brake.

Towing eyelet
When used, the towing eyelet should always besecurely attached in the openings on the rightside of the front and rear bumpers. There arecovers over these attachment points.
Using the towing eyelet
Take out the towing eyelet, which is storedunder the floor in the cargo compartment.
Remove the cover by pressing the mark witha finger and folding out the opposite side/corner with a coin, small screwdriver, etc.
>The cover turns along its center line andthen be removed.
3. Screw the towing eyelet into place, first byhand and then using the tire iron, etc. until ithas been screwed in as far as possible.
After use, the eyelet should be removed andreturned to its storage location.
Reinsert the cover into the bumper.

Towing recommendations
Always check with state and local authoritiesbefore attempting to tow another vehiclebecause this type of towing is subject to regula-tions regarding maximum towing speed, lengthand type of towing device, lighting, etc.
Towing your vehicle behind another
vehicle
The XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid maynot be towed behind another vehicle. Doing sowould damage the electric motor and the three-way catalytic converter. If the vehicle cannot bedriven and must be moved, it must be lifted ontoa flat-bed tow truck.
If the XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid is totow (pull) another vehicle, select the AWD drivemode. This helps charge the hybrid battery andimproves the vehicle's road holding characteris-tics.

Jump starting
Follow the instructions provided here to jumpstart your vehicle or to jump start another vehi-cle.
Jumper cable connecting terminals
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybridbattery is discharged.
CAUTION
The vehicle's jumper cable connecting termi-nals may only be used to start your vehicle.They are not intended to be used to help startanother vehicle. If they are used to startanother vehicle, a fuse may blow and the ter-minal will not function.
If a fuse blows, 12 V Battery Fuse failureService required will be displayed in the instru-ment panel. Contact a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.
Use the following steps when jump starting yourvehicle to help prevent short circuits or otherdamage.
1.Switch the ignition off completely (mode 0).
2.Ensure that the auxiliary battery to be used is12-volt.
3. If the 12-volt auxiliary battery to be used is inanother vehicle, switch off that vehicle's igni-tion and be sure that the vehicles are nottouching each other.
4. Connect one of the red jumper cable'sclamps to the auxiliary battery's positive (+)terminal (1).
CAUTION
Connect the jumper cables carefully to avoidshort circuits with other components in theengine compartment.
5. Open the cover over the positive (+) jumpstart terminal (2).
6.Connect the red jumper cable's other clampto your vehicle's positive (+) jump start termi-nal (2).
7. Connect one of the black jumper cable'sclamps to the auxiliary battery's negative (–)terminal (3).
8. Connect the black jumper cable's otherclamp to your vehicle's negative (–) jumpstart terminal (4).
9. Check that the jumper cables are securelyattached to help avoid sparks when the vehi-cle is started.
10. Start the engine in the assisting vehicle andrun it for a short time at approx. 1,500 rpm.

WARNING
•Never use more than one floor mat at atime on the driver's floor. Before driving,remove the original mat from the driver'sseat floor before using any other type offloor mat. Any mat used in this positionshould be securely and properly anchoredin the attaching pins. An extra mat on thedriver's floor can cause the acceleratorand/or brake pedal to catch. Check thatthe movement of these pedals is notimpeded.
•Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your car. They must be firmlysecured in the clips on the floor so thatthey cannot slide and become trappedunder the pedals on the driver's side.
During normal starts, the electric motor is priori-tized and the gasoline engine will not start. Thismeans that when the start knob has been turnedtoward START and released, the electric motor isactivated ("started") and the vehicle is ready tobe driven. The warning and information symbolsin the instrument panel will go out and thechosen theme will be displayed to indicate thatthe electric motor has been activated.
However, in certain situations, such as in coldweather or if the hybrid battery is not sufficientlycharged, the gasoline engine will start instead.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybridbattery is discharged.
Back-up reader in the tunnel console
If Vehicle key not found is displayed in theinstrument panel, place the remote key in theback-up reader in the tunnel console (see theillustration) and try again to start the engine.
NOTE
When the remote key is in the back-upreader, be sure there are no other metallicobjects (e.g., other keys, coins, cell phones) inthe cup holder. This could affect the back-upreader's function.
If Vehicle start System check, wait is dis-played in the instrument panel when you try to
start the vehicle, wait until the message is nolonger displayed and try to start again.
CAUTION
If the engine does not start after the third try,wait for approximately 3 minutes before tryingto start it again to give the battery time torecover its starting capacity.
WARNING
•Always remove the remote key from thepassenger compartment when leaving thevehicle and ensure that the ignition inmode 0.
•On vehicles with the optional PassiveEntry, never remove the remote key fromthe vehicle while it is being driven ortowed.
•Always place the gear selector in Parkand apply the parking brake before leav-ing the vehicle. Never leave the vehicleunattended with the engine running.
•Always open garage doors fully beforestarting the engine inside a garage toensure adequate ventilation. The exhaustgases contain carbon monoxide, which isinvisible and odorless but very poisonous.

Suspension leveling settings
Easy entry
The vehicle can be lowered to entering and exit-ing easier.
In the center display's Top view:
1.Tap Settings.
2.Tap My CarSuspension .
3.Select Easy Entry/Exit Control.
>When the vehicle is parked and theengine is turned off, the level is lowered.Level adjustment will stop if a side door isopened and will resume after a slightdelay when the door has been closed.When the engine is started and the vehi-cle begins to move, the level will be raisedto the height set by the selected drivemode.
If a door has been opened and closed, there maybe a slight delay before the leveling function willresume.
Turning off suspension and leveling control
In certain situations, this function has to beturned off, for example when lifting the vehicle ona jack to help avoid problems created by the dif-ference in levels in the pneumatic suspensionwhen the vehicle is raised.
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Tap My CarSuspension .
3.Select Deactivate Suspension & LevelingControl.
Loading mode
Use the buttons in the cargo compartment toraise or lower the vehicle to make loading orunloading easier or when attaching a trailer.
Parking the vehicle
When parking, be sure that there is adequatespace above and below the vehicle since itsground clearance may vary, e.g., depending onthe ambient temperature, how the vehicle is loa-ded, if loading mode is being used or the drivemode selected after the engine is started.
The level may also be adjusted for a certain timeafter the vehicle has been parked to compensatefor possible height adjustments due to tempera-ture changes in the pneumatic suspension whenthe vehicle has cooled.
Transport
When transporting the vehicle on a ferry, train ora tow truck, it may only be secured (lashed)around the tires, not using any other chassiscomponents. Changes in the pneumatic suspen-sion may occur during transport that could nega-tively affect the lashing and result in damage.

1. Activate tethering/personal hotspot in thecell phone.
2.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
3.Tap CommunicationWi-Fi.
4. Tap Wi-Fi to activate/deactivate.
5. Tap the name of the network to be used.
6. Enter the network password.
7. If a different connection was used previously,confirm the connection change.
> The vehicle will connect to the network.
Please be aware that certain cell phones disabletethering when the connection to the vehicle hasbeen broken, e.g., when the phone has beenremoved from the vehicle. In such cases, thephone's tethering function will have to be reacti-vated the next time the phone is used to connectto the Internet.
When a phone is connected to the vehicle, it issaved for future use. When a max. number of 50have been saved, the first one connected will bedeleted. To show the list of saved networks or to
manually delete a network, tap SettingsWi-Fi
Saved networks.

Connect using a cable connected to the
USB socket
1. Connect the phone via a cable to the USBsocket in the tunnel console storage com-partment.
2. Activate USB tethering in the cell phone.
3. If a different connection was used previously,confirm the connection change.
> The vehicle will connect to the network.
Connect using the vehicle's integrated
modem
When the vehicle is connected using the modem,Volvo On Call services will use the connection.
1. Insert a personal SIM card in the holder.
2.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
3.Tap CommunicationVehicle ModemInternet.
4.Tap Vehicle modem Internet to activate/deactivate.
5.If a different connection was used previously,confirm the connection change.
6. Enter the SIM card's PIN code.
> The vehicle will connect to the network.

Tethering (Wi-Fi sharing)
When the vehicle is connected to the Internet,this connection can be shared (tethered) with
other devices7.
The network service provider (the SIM card) mustsupport tethering.
1.Open the center display's Top view.
2.Tap SettingsCommunicationVehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot.
3.Tap Network name and assign a name tothe hotspot.
4.Tap Password and create a password to beused by devices trying to connect (tether) tothe hotspot.
5.Tap Frequency band and select a fre-quency that the hotspot will use to transmitdata. This may not be possible in all markets.
6.Activate/deactivate by tapping the VehicleWi-Fi Hotspot box.
7.If another connection has been used previ-ously, confirm the change of connections.
> It is now possible for external devices toconnect to the vehicle's Wi-Fi hotspot.
Connection status will be indicated in a symbol inthe center display's status bar.
Tap Connected devices to see a list of con-nected devices.

Deleting Wi-Fi networks
Networks that are not used can be deleted.
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Tap Wi-FiSaved networks.
3.Tap Forget to remove the network.
4.Confirm the selection.
> The vehicle will no longer connect to thedeleted network.
Deleting all networks
All networks can be deleted at the same time byreturning (resetting) to factory settings.
If this is done, all user data and settings will bereset to their default settings.

Wi-Fi technology and security
The following are types of networks can be con-nect to.
It is possible to connect to the following types ofnetworks:
•Frequency: 2.4 or 5 GHz8.
•Standards: 802.11 a/b/g/n.
•Security type: WPA2-AES-CCMP.
The vehicle's Wi-Fi system is designed to man-age Wi-Fi devices in the vehicle.
If several devices are using a frequency at thesame time, this may result in poorer performance.

Vehicle modem settings
The vehicle is equipped with a modem that canbe used to connect the vehicle to the Internet. Itis also possible to share (tether) this connectionvia Wi-Fi.
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Tap CommunicationVehicle ModemInternet and choose among the followingsettings:
•Vehicle modem Internet: select to use thevehicle's modem to connect to the Internet.
•Data usage: %s: Tap Reset to restart(reset) the counter for the amount of datasent/received.
•Network
Selectcarrier: select a service provider automati-cally or manually.
Dataroaming: select to allow the vehicle to con-nect to another network if the standard net-work is not available (e.g., if you are driving inanother country). This could entail additionalcharges, consult your service provider.

Checking tire inflation pressure
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)makes it possible to view the current inflationpressure status of all four tires.
Checking inflation pressure
Open the Car status app inthe center display's Applicationview. Tap Status to see thecurrent inflation pressure sta-tus of all four tires.
The on-screen graphic displays the inflation pres-sure status.
Status view. The illustration is generic and may vary frommodel to model or after a software update
Color indications:
Green: tire pressure is above the threshold for alow inflation pressure warning.
Yellow: low tire pressure.
•One yellow wheel: the tire indicated is under-inflated.
•All wheels yellow: two or more tires areunder-inflated.
Stop safely and check/reinflate the tire(s) assoon as possible. Calibrate TPMS after reinflatingthe tire(s).
All wheels gray:
•Calibration is underway
•Inflation pressure status is not known
It might be necessary to drive at a speed of atleast 20 mph (30 km/h) for several minutes forthe system to become operational.
All wheels gray combined with the messageTire pressure system Temporarilyunavailable and the TPMS symbol in the
instrument panel () remains illuminatedafter flashing for 1 minute: the system is tem-porarily unavailable. It should become operationalagain shortly.
All wheels gray combined with the messageTire pressure system Service required andthe TPMS symbol in the instrument panel
() remains illuminated after flashing for1 minute: the system is not functioning correctly.Have it checked by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.
