8 3.Adjusting the brake lever free play
The brake lever free play should measure
5.0–7.0 mm (0.20–0.28 in) as shown. If the
free play is incorrect, adjust it as follows.a. Loosen the locknut at the brake lever and
fully turn in the brake lever free play adjust-
ing bolt.
b. Turn the brake lever free play adjusting nut
on the brake cable at the rear wheel hub so
that the distance between the brake cam-
shaft lever and the pin, gap “A”, measures
0–1 mm (0–0.04 in).

c. Turn the brake lever free play adjusting
bolt at the brake lever in direction (a) to in-
crease the free play, and in direction (b) to
decrease it.d. Tighten the locknut at the brake lever.
e. Install the footboard.
TIPWhen adjusting the rear brake lever free play:
Be sure not to step on the brake pedal.

8 The brake light switch for the brake pedal can be
adjusted as follows, but the other brake light
switches should be adjusted by a Yamaha dealer.
1. Remove the footboard. (See “Engine oil” on
page 8-11 for removal and installation proce-
dures.)
2. Turn the adjusting nut while holding the brake
light switch in place. To make the brake light
come on earlier, turn the adjusting nut in direc-
tion (a). To make the brake light come on lat-
er, turn the adjusting nut in direction (b).
3. Install the footboard.
EBU24803Adjusting the clutch free play The clutch free play must be adjusted periodically.
Adjust the free play as follows.
1. Remove the footboard. (See “Engine oil” on
page 8-11 for removal and installation proce-
dures.)
2. Loosen the locknut.
3. Slowly turn the clutch adjusting screw in direc-
tion (a) until resistance is felt, and then turn it
1/8 turn in direction (b).

turn together with the locknut.5. Install the footboard.EBU24901Checking and lubricating the cables The operation and the condition of all control ca-
bles should be checked before each ride, and the
cables and cable ends should be lubricated if nec-
essary. If a cable is damaged or does not move
smoothly, have a Yamaha dealer check or replace
it.

Inspect cables frequently and replace if dam-
aged. Corrosion can result when the cable
sheaths become damaged, and cables can
also become frayed or kinked, which could
restrict the operation of controls and lead to
an accident or injury.
Always make sure all control cables work
smoothly before you begin riding in cold
weather. If the control cables are frozen or do
not work smoothly, you could be unable to
control the ATV, which could lead to an acci-

EBU24963Checking the wheel hub bearings The front and rear wheel hub bearings must be
checked at the intervals specified in the periodic
maintenance and lubrication chart. If there is play
in a wheel hub or if a wheel does not turn smoothly,
have a Yamaha dealer check the wheel hub bear-
ings.
EBU24995Lubricating the swingarm pivots The swingarm pivots must be lubricated by a
Yamaha dealer at the intervals specified in the pe-
riodic maintenance and lubrication chart.EBU25091Lubricating the steering shaft The steering shaft must be lubricated by a Yamaha

EBU29872Battery A poorly maintained battery will corrode and dis-
charge quickly. The electrolyte level, battery lead
connections and breather hose routing should be
checked before each ride and at the intervals
specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrica-
tion chart.
WARNING
EWB02160Battery electrolyte is poisonous and danger-
ous, as it contains sulfuric acid, which can
cause severe burns. Avoid contact with skin,
eyes or clothing. Always shield your eyes
when working near batteries.
Antidote:
EXTERNAL: Flush with water.
INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of water or
milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg
or vegetable oil. Call a physician immediately.
EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes and get
prompt medical attention.
Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep
sparks, flame, cigarettes or other sources of ig-
nition away. Ventilate when charging or using
in an enclosed space.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.To check the electrolyte level

TIPThe electrolyte should be between the minimum
and maximum level marks.4. If the electrolyte is at or below the minimum
level mark, add distilled water to raise it to the
maximum level mark. NOTICE: Use only dis-
tilled water, as tap water contains minerals
that are harmful to the battery.

lead connections and correct the breather
hose routing as explained in step 5 of “To in-
stall the battery”.
6. Install the battery cover.
To remove the battery
1. Remove the battery cover by pulling it upward.
2. Disconnect the negative battery lead.
NOTICE: When removing the battery, the
main switch must be off, and the negative
lead must be disconnected before the pos-
itive lead.

3. Remove the battery holding plate by removing
the bolts.
4. Disconnect the positive battery lead.
5. Remove the battery.
To store the battery

If the ATV will not be used for more than one
month, remove the battery, fully charge it, and
then place it in a cool, dry place.
If the battery will be stored for more than two
months, check the specific gravity of the electro-
lyte at least once a month and fully charge the
battery whenever necessary.1. Battery

2. Connect the positive battery lead.
3. Install the holding plate by installing the bolts.
4. Connect the negative battery lead.
5. Make sure that the breather hose is properly
routed, in good condition, and not obstructed.
The breather hose end should measure 50.0–
60.0 mm (1.97–2.36 in) past the bottom hose
clamp.NOTICE: If the breather hose is posi-
tioned in such a way that the frame is ex-
posed to electrolyte or gas expelled from
the battery, the frame could suffer struc-
tural and external damages.
