DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Engine Ignition
Eight separate ignition coils:
zare controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM).
z are mounted directly above each spark plug.
z are controlled by the powertrain control module for correct firing sequence.
The spark plug:
zchanges the high voltage pulse into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
z originally equipped on the vehicle has a platinum- enhanced active electrode for long life.
The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor:
NOTE: Initial engine ignition timing is set at 10 degrees ± 2 degrees before top dead center (BTDC)
and is not adjustable. For additional information, refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis
(PC/ED) manual.
zis a variable reluctance sensor, triggered by a 36- minus-1 tooth trigger pulse wheel located on
the crankshaft, inside the engine front cover.
The sine wave type signal generated from the crankshaft position sensor provides two types of
information:
zposition of the crankshaft in 10 degree increments
z the crankshaft speed (rpm)
For additional information, refer to Section 303 - 14 .

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Evaporative Emission Canister
Removal and Installation
1. WARNING: The evaporative emission system contains fuel vapor and condensed
fuel vapor. Although not in large quantities, it still presents the danger of explosion or
fire. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery to minimize the possibility of
an electrical spark occurring, possibly causing a fire or explosion if fuel vapor or liquid
fuel is present in the area. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal
injury.
Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414 - 01 .
2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100 - 02 .
3. Remove the left rear wheel. For additional information, refer to Section 204 - 04 .
4. WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when
working on or around any fuel- related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always
present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal
injury.
Disconnect the canister vent solenoid hose assembly.
5. Disconnect the connector.
6. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge outlet tube.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Electronic Engine Controls
The electronic engine controls consist of the following:
zpowertrain control module (PCM)
z throttle position (TP) sensor
z idle air control (IAC) valve
z engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
z cylinder head temperature sensor
z camshaft position (CMP) sensor
z crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
z mass air flow (MAF) sensor
z intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
z heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) — front
z catalyst monitor sensor — rear
z wheel speed sensor
The powertrain control module needs the following inputs to calibrate the engine correctly:
zcrankshaft position
z engine rpm
z engine load (manifold pressure)
z atmospheric (barometric) pressure

The throttle position sensor:
zsends the powertrain control module a signal indicating the throttle plate angle.
z is the main input to the powertrain control module from the driver.
The idle air control valve:
zcontrols bypass air around the throttle plate at low speeds.
z is controlled by the powertrain control module.
The cylinder head temperature sensor:
zprovides a gauge signal for coolant temperature.
z is mounted on rear of LH cylinder head.
z sends the powertrain control module a signal indicating engine temperature.
z resistance decreases as coolant temperature increases.

The reverse clutch couples the input shaft to the reverse sun gear, applied in reverse range only.
One-
Way Clutch— Planetary (Low)
The planetary (low) one- way clutch is a roller clutch that holds the planetary gearset in first gear, (D)
and D ranges. During automatic coasting downshifts into first gear ((D) and D ranges), the planetary
one- way clutch freewheels so there is no engine braking.
