INSPECTION
High Clutch Snap Rings and Spring Retainer Assembly
Check for deformation, fatigue or damage. Replace if necessary.
High Clutch Drive Plates
Check facing for burns, cracks or damage. Replace if necessary.
Measure thickness of facing.
CAUTION:
Measure the thickness at 3 locations and find the aver-
age.
Inspect all drive plates.
Replace if the thickness is below the allowable limit.
High Clutch Piston
Make sure that check balls are not fixed.
Apply compressed air to check ball oil hole opposite return spring. Make sure there is no air leakage.
Apply compressed air to oil hole on return spring side to make sure that air leaks past ball.
Seal Ring Clearance
Install new seal rings onto input shaft assembly (high clutch
drum).
Measure clearance between seal ring and ring groove.
If not within allowable limit, replace input shaft assembly (high
clutch drum).Thickness of drive plate
Standard and allowable limit:
Refer to AT- 3 6 6 , "
HIGH CLUTCH" .

ASSEMBLY
1. Install D-rings on high clutch piston.
2. Install high clutch piston on input shaft assembly (high clutch
drum) by turning it slowly.
CAUTION:
Apply ATF to inner surface of input shaft assembly (high
clutch drum).
3. Install spring retainer assembly (1) on high clutch piston (2).
4. Set SST on spring retainer assembly, and install snap ring while
slowly compressing return springs.
CAUTION:
Set SST directly over return springs.
Do not expand snap ring excessively.

Do not align snap ring gap with spring retainer stopper.
5. Install drive plates (3), driven plates (4) and retaining plate (2).
Refer to AT- 3 6 6 , "
HIGH CLUTCH" .
(1): Snap ring
(2): Retaining plate
(3): Drive plate
(4): Driven plate
Drive plate/Driven plate: 3/8 (7+1)
CAUTION:
Be careful to the order and direction of plates.
6. Install snap ring with flat-bladed screwdriver.
7. Set dial indicator A on retaining plate (1), and measure clear-
ance between retaining plate (1) and snap ring (2). If not within
allowable limit, select proper retaining plate (1). Refer to “Parts
Information” for retaining plate selection.
8. Check operation of high clutch. Refer to AT- 3 0 1 , "
DISASSEM-

9. Install seal rings to input shaft assembly (high clutch drum).
CAUTION:
Roll paper around seal rings to prevent seal rings from
spreading.

COMPONENTS
DISASSEMBLY
1. Check operation of forward clutch and overrun clutch.
a. Install bearing retainer of output shaft on forward clutch drum.
b. Apply compressed air to oil hole of forward clutch drum.
c. Check to see that retaining plate moves to snap ring.
d. If retaining plate does not contact snap ring:
D-ring might be damaged.
Seal lip might be damaged.
Fluid might be leaking past piston check ball.

2. Remove snap ring for forward clutch with flat-bladed screw-
driver.
3. Remove drive plates, driven plates, retaining plates and dish
plate for forward clutch.
4. Remove snap ring for overrun clutch with flat-bladed screw-
driver.
5. Remove drive plates, driven plates, retaining plate and dish
plates for overrun clutch.
6. Set SST on spring retainer assembly, and remove snap ring
from forward clutch drum while compressing return springs.
CAUTION:
Set SST directly over return springs.
Do not expand snap ring excessively.
7. Remove spring retainer assembly.
CAUTION:
Do not remove return springs from spring retainer.
8. Remove forward clutch piston with overrun clutch piston from
forward clutch drum by turning it.
9. Remove overrun clutch piston from forward clutch piston by
turning it.

10. Remove seal lips (1) and D-rings (2) from forward clutch piston
(3) and overrun clutch piston (4).
INSPECTION
Snap Rings and Spring Retainer Assembly
Check for deformation, fatigue or damage. Replace if necessary.
Forward Clutch and Overrun Clutch Drive Plates
Check facing for burns, cracks or damage. Replace if necessary.
Measure thickness of facing.
CAUTION:
Measure the thickness at 3 locations and find the average.
Inspect all drive plates.
Replace if the thickness is below the allowable limit.
Forward Clutch and Overrun Clutch Dish Plates
Check for damage or wear.
Measure thickness of dish plate. Replace if damaged, worn or
deformed.
Forward Clutch Drum
Make sure that check balls are not fixed.
Apply compressed air to check ball oil hole from outside of for-
ward clutch drum. Make sure air leaks past ball.
Apply compressed air to oil hole from inside of forward clutch
drum. Make sure there is no air leakage.

Overrun clutch: 2.3 mm (0.091 in)

Overrun Clutch Piston
Make sure that check balls are not fixed.
Apply compressed air to check ball oil hole opposite return
spring. Make sure there is no air leakage.
Apply compressed air to oil hole on return spring side. Make
sure that air leaks past ball.
ASSEMBLY
1. Install seal lips (1) and D-rings (2) on forward clutch piston (3)
and overrun clutch piston (4).
CAUTION:
Be careful to direction of seal lips (1).
2. Install overrun clutch piston on forward clutch piston by turning it
slowly.
CAUTION:
Apply ATF to inner surface of forward clutch piston.
3. Install forward clutch piston with overrun clutch piston on for-
ward clutch drum by turning it slowly.
CAUTION:
Apply ATF to inner surface of forward clutch drum.

4. Install spring retainer assembly (1) on overrun clutch piston (2).
Align the mark on spring retainer with check ball in overrun
clutch piston.
5. Set SST on spring retainer assembly, and install snap ring while
compressing return springs.
CAUTION:
Set SST directly over return springs.
Do not expand snap ring excessively.
Do not align snap ring gap with spring retainer stopper.

6. Install drive plates, driven plates, retaining plate and dish plates
for overrun clutch. Refer to AT- 3 6 6 , "
OVERRUN CLUTCH" .
CAUTION:
Be careful to the order of plates.
NOTE:
Install two dish plates fitting each installation direction with
groove displaced slightly.
7. Install snap ring for overrun clutch with flat-bladed screwdriver.
