DIESEL ENGINES

CHECKING LEVELS
Check all of these levels regularly and
top them up if necessary, unless other-
wise indicated.
I f a l e v e l d r o p s s i g n i fi c a n t l y , h a v e t h e
corresponding circuit checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer. Brake fluid level
In addition, as the cooling system is
pressurised, wait at least one hour after
switching off the engine before carrying
out any work.
To avoid any risk of scalding, unscrew
the cap by two turns to allow the pres-
sure to drop. When the pressure has
dropped, remove the cap and top up
the level.
Oil level The reading will only be correct
if the vehicle is on level ground
and the engine has been off for
more than 15 minutes.
The check is carried out either when the
ignition is switched on using the oil level
indicator on the instrument panel, or us-
ing the dipstick.
Between two oil changes, the consump-
t i o n s h o u l d n o t e x c e e d 0 . 5 l i t r e p e r
600 miles (1,000 km). T h e b r a k e fl u i d l e v e l s h o u l d b e
close to the "MAX" mark. If it is
not, check the brake pad wear.
Draining the circuit
Refer to the servicing booklet for details
of the interval for this operation.
Power steering fluid level T h e p o w e r s t e e r i n g fl u i d l e v e l
should be close to the "MAX"
mark. Unscrew the cap, with
the engine cold, to check the
level. Screenwash and headlamp
wash fluid
I n t h e c a s e o f v e h i c l e s fi t t e d
with headlamp washers, the
m i n i m u m l e v e l o f t h i s fl u i d i s
indicated by an audible signal
and a message on the multifunction
display.
Top up the level when you stop the ve-
hicle.
Draining the engine
Refer to the servicing booklet for details
of the interval for this operation.
In order to maintain the reliability of the
engine and emission control system,
the use of additives in the engine oil is
prohibited.
O i l s p e c i fi c a t i o n
The oil must correspond to your engine
and conform to the manufacturer's rec-

Draining the circuit
The coolant does not have to be
changed.

For optimum cleaning and to avoid
f r e e z i n g , t h i s fl u i d m u s t n o t b e t o p p e d
up or replaced with water.
Coolant level
The coolant level should be
close to the "MAX" mark but
s h o u l d n e v e r e x c e e d i t .
When the engine is warm, the tempera-
ture of the coolant is regulated by the fan.
This can operate with the ignition off.
O n v e h i c l e s w h i c h a r e fi t t e d w i t h a
p a r t i c l e e m i s s i o n fi l t e r , t h e f a n m a y
operate after the vehicle has been
switched off, even if the engine is

Diesel additive level (Diesel with
particle emission filter)
A low additive level is indicated by light-
ing of the service warning light, accom-
panied by an audible warning and a
message on the multifunction display.
Used products
Unless otherwise indicated, check
these components in accordance with
the servicing booklet and in relation to
your engine.
Otherwise, have them checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Battery
The battery does not require
any maintenance.
However, check that the ter-
minals are clean and correctly
tightened, particularly in sum-
mer and winter.
When carrying out work on the battery,
refer to the "Practical information" sec-
tion for details of the precautions to be
taken before disconnecting the battery
and following its reconnection.
Air filter and passenger compartment filter
Refer to the servicing booklet
for details of the replacement
intervals for these compo-
nents.
Depending on the environ-
ment (dusty atmosphere...) and the use
of the vehicle (city driving...), replace
them twice as often if necessary (re-
fer to the "Engines" paragraph).
A c l o g g e d p a s s e n g e r c o m p a r t m e n t fi l t e r
may have an adverse effect on the per-
formance of the air conditioning system
and generate undesirable odours. Particle emission filter (Diesel)
It is imperative that the maintenance of

by a PEUGEOT dealer.
Oil filter

In order to optimise the operation
of units as important as the braking
system, PEUGEOT selects and of-
f e r s v e r y s p e c i fi c p r o d u c t s .
To avoid damaging the electrical
units, the use of a high pressure
washer in the engine compartment
is strictly prohibited .
Brake disc wear status
Brake pads
Handbrake Brake wear depends on the
style of driving, particularly in
the case of vehicles used in
town, over short distances. It
may be necessary to have the
condition of the brakes checked, even
between vehicle services.
Unless there is a leak in the circuit, a
d r o p i n t h e b r a k e fl u i d l e v e l i n d i c a t e s
that the brake pads are worn.
For information relating to
checking the brake disc wear
status, contact a PEUGEOT
dealer.
If the handbrake travel is too
long or if a loss of effective-
ness of this system is no-
ticed, the handbrake must be
adjusted, even between two
services.
This system must be checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Manual gearbox

CHANGING A WHEEL
The tools are installed in the boot under
t h e fl o o r .
To gain access to them:
open the boot,
r a i s e t h e fl o o r ,
secure it by hooking its cord on the
hook on the rear shelf support,
remove the polystyrene storage
b o x ,
u n c l i p a n d r e m o v e t h e b o x c o n t a i n -
ing the tools. A l l o f t h e s e t o o l s a r e s p e c i fi c t o y o u r
vehicle. Do not use them for other
purposes.
1. Wheelbrace.
Permits removal of the wheel trim a n d r e m o v a l o f t h e w h e e l fi x i n g
bolts.
2. Jack with integral handle.
Permits raising of the vehicle.
3. "Bolt cover" tool.
Permits removal of the bolt pro- tectors (covers) on alloy wheels.

5. Socket for the anti-theft bolts (lo-
c a t e d i n t h e g l o v e b o x ) .
Permits adaptation of the wheel- brace to the special "anti-theft"
bolts.

CHANGING A WHEEL
Procedure for changing a
faulty wheel for the spare
wheel using the tools pro-
vided with the vehicle.
The tools 1 and 6 are installed in the
boot left-hand side trim.
The tools 2 to 4 a r e i n s t a l l e d i n a b o x ,
in the centre of the spare wheel, placed
underneath the vehicle.
To gain access to them:
open the boot,
o p e n t h e a c c e s s fl a p i n t h e l e f t - h a n d
side trim,
remove the wheelbrace from its sup-
port,
refer to the paragraph "Access to
t h e s p a r e w h e e l " o n t h e n e x t p a g e
to retrieve the other tools.
Access to the tools
A l l o f t h e s e t o o l s a r e s p e c i fi c t o y o u r
vehicle. Do not use them for other
purposes.
1. Wheelbrace.

Fixing the steel or "space-
saving" type spare wheel
I f y o u r v e h i c l e i s fi t t e d w i t h a l l o y
wheels, it is normal to notice, when
t i g h t e n i n g t h e b o l t s o n fi t t i n g , t h a t
the washers do not come into con-
tact with the steel or "space-saving"
type spare wheel. The wheel is
secured by the conical contact of
each bolt.
Access to the spare wheel
The spare wheel is installed in the boot
u n d e r t h e fl o o r .
According to country, the spare wheel
may be steel, alloy or of the "space sav-
ing" type.
To gain access to it, refer to the para-
graph "Access to the tools" on the previ-
ous page.
Taking out the wheel
Unscrew the yellow central bolt.
Raise the spare wheel towards you
from the rear.
Take the wheel out of the boot.
Putting the wheel back in place
Put the wheel back in its housing.
Unscrew the yellow central bolt by a
few turns then put it in place in the
centre of the wheel.
Tighten fully until the central bolt
clicks to retain the wheel correctly.

tre of the wheel and clip it.
P u t t h e p o l y s t y r e n e s t o r a g e b o x
back in place.

Fixing the steel or "space-
saving" type spare wheel
I f y o u r v e h i c l e i s fi t t e d w i t h a l l o y
wheels, it is normal to notice, when
t i g h t e n i n g t h e b o l t s o n fi t t i n g , t h a t
the washers do not come into con-
tact with the steel or "space-saving"
type spare wheel. The wheel is
secured by the conical contact of

The spare wheel is supported by a
winch system underneath the vehicle.
According to country, the spare wheel may
be steel, alloy or of the "space-saving"
type.
Taking out the wheel
O p e n t h e fl a p w i t h t h e e y e t o r e -
lease the winch and access its con-
trol nut.
Unscrew this nut fully, using the
wheelbrace 1 , to unwind the winch
cable.
D e t a c h t h e w h e e l / b o x a s s e m b l y
from the rear of the vehicle.
Take out the hook to release the
w h e e l / b o x a s s e m b l y , i n a c c o r d a n c e
with the illustration.
Take out the black plastic centring
cone.
Take out the wheel to gain access to
t h e b o x .
S l i d e t h e b o x c o v e r t o t h e c e n t r e
and remove it to gain access to the
other tools.

Putting the wheel back in place
Store the corresponding tools in the
b o x a n d c l o s e t h e c o v e r .

Position the black plastic centring
cone (on the steel or "space-saving"
type wheel only).
P a s s t h e h o o k i n t o t h e b o x c o v e r .
R a i s e t h e w h e e l / b o x a s s e m b l y u n -
derneath the vehicle by tighten-
ing the winch control nut using the
wheelbrace 1 .
Tighten fully and check that the
w h e e l i s h o r i z o n t a l l y fl u s h a g a i n s t
t h e fl o o r .
C l o s e t h e fl a p w i t h t h e e y e t o l o c k
the winch.
T y r e u n d e r - i n fl a t i o n d e t e c t i o n
T h e s p a r e w h e e l i s n o t fi t t e d w i t h
a sensor. The punctured wheel
must be repaired by a PEUGEOT
dealer. If you purchase a wheel of uniform
size to replace the "space-saving"
type spare wheel, the shim, locat-
ed underneath the vehicle, must
be removed. Consult a PEUGEOT
dealer.
