on together with the ABS and ESC indica
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating func
t ion may be malfunct ion ing . Funct ions
that stabilize the vehicle are no longer
available . Th is could cause the rear of the
vehicle to swerve, wh ich increases the
risk that the vehicle will slide. Drive care
fully to the nearest authorized Audi deal
er or authorized Audi Service Facility and
have the malfunction corrected .

• Switch off engine and check coolant lev

The coolant level is too low or the coo lant
temperature is too high.
Do not continue driving and switch the engine
off . Check the coolant level¢

- If the coolant level is too low, add coolant
¢page 221. Only continue driving once the
ind icator light turns off .
- If the coolant level is correct, the problem
may be caused by a malfunction in the radia
tor fan. Do not continue driving. See an au
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.
• Coolant temperature too high! Let engine
run with vehicle stationary
Let the engine run at idle fo r a few minutes to
cool down . .,..

-Never open the hood if you can see or
hear steam or coolant escaping from the
engine compartment . This increases the
risk of burns. Wait until you no longer
see or hear steam or coolant escaping.

-The engine compartment in any vehicle
can be a dangerous area. Stop the engine
and allow it to cool before working in the
engine compartment. Always follow the
information found in
<:;>pag e 214, Work
ing in the engine compartment.

Do not continue driving if the. indicator

engine damage.

The oil pressure warning is not an oil level
ind icator. For this reason, check the oil lev
el regularly.
0 Alternator/battery
• Alternator f ault: battery is not being
charged
There is a malfunct ion in the alternator or the
vehicle electrical system.
Drive to an authorized Aud i dealer or author
ized Audi Service Facility immed iately. Be
cause the vehicle battery is draining, turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment such as
the
MMI. See your authorized Audi dea ler or a
qualified repair facility if the battery charge
l evel is too low.
(•] low battery charge: Battery will be
charged while driving
The starting ability may be impaired.
If this message turns off afte r a little while,
the battery has charged enough wh ile driving.
If the message does not turn off, have and au
thorized Audi dea ler or authorized Audi Serv
ice Facility repair the malfunction.

The II (USA models) Im (Canada models)
indicator light monitors the safety systems.
Safety system
If the II (USA models)/ m (Canada models)
indicator light turns on or blinks, there is a
malfu nction in a safety system.
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or author
ized Audi Serv ice Facility immediately to have
the malfunction corrected.

-Have the safety systems inspected imme-
diately. Otherwise, there is a risk that the
systems may not activate during a colli
s ion, wh ich increases the risk of serious in
jury or death.
4f-Front safety belt
The. indicator light stays on until the driv
er's and front passenger's safety belts are
buck led. There is also a warning tone above a
certain speed .

More force is needed to steer and brake t he
moving veh icle when the eng ine is stopped . If
t h e ve hicle is rolli ng, try to stop i t caref ully on
the side of the ro ad away fro m moving t raffi c.

A WARNING
If th e engine stops w hile driving, you will
need to use mo re fo rce to brake the vehi
cle. T his increases the r isk of an accident .

rolling and there is sufficie nt battery
cha rge . Ot herwise, you must use greater
fo rce when steer ing.

(ABS)
If the DJ ind icator light blinks while driving,
the ESP or ASR (anti-slip regulation) is active ly
regulating.
If the
DJ ind icator light tu rns on, the system
has switc hed the ESC off . In t his case, yo u can
switch the ign ition off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The ind icator lig ht tu rns off
whe n the system is fu nctioni ng fu lly.

The key set contains two remote contro l keys
or convenience keys*. To fold the key out or in,
press the release button

Remote control key or convenience key
The convenience key is a vehicle remote con
trol key with special functions

Locking and unlocking with the convenience

the engine (vehicles with a convenience key).
With the remote control key, you can lock and
un lock the vehicle centrally and start the en
gine.
Number of keys
You can check the number of keys assigned to
your vehicle in the MMI. This allows you to
make sure you have received a ll of the keys
when you purchase a used vehicle. Select: the
I MENU I button > Car> Systems* control but
ton
> Programmed keys.
Replacing a key
If a key is lost, see an authorized Audi dea ler
or qualified repair facility. Have this key deac
tivated. It is important to bring all keys with
you.
If a key is lost, you should report it to
your insurance company .
Immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents unauthorized use of
the vehicle . The vehicle may not start if anoth -

er radio device such as a key for another veh i
cle or a transponder is located on the key ring.
Data in the remote control key or
convenience key
While driving , service and maintenance -rele
vant data is continuously stored on your re
mote control key or convenience key*. Your
Audi serv ice advisor can read out this data and
tell you about the work your vehicle needs.
_& WARNING
- Always take the vehicle key with you
when leaving the vehicle, even for a
short period of time. This applies partic
ularly when children remain in the vehi
cle . Otherwise the children could start
the engine or operate electrical equip
ment such as power windows.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com
plete stop. Otherwise, the steering lock
could engage sudden ly and increase the
risk of an accident.
{i) Tips
The operation of the remote control key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the veh icle working in the same frequency
range (for example, a cell phone or radio
equipment).
Central locking system description
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally .
There are different ways, depending on vehicle
equipment:
- Remote control key

- Sensors in the front door handles on
veh icles with a convenience key*

If your vehicle is left standing for a long
period of time, note the following:
- The proximity sensor switches off after a
few days to save energy. You then have
to pull once on the door handle to unlock
the vehicle and a second time to open it.
- To prevent the battery from draining and
to retain the starting ability of yo ur vehi
cle as long as possible, the energy man
agement system gradua lly tuns off un
necessary convenience functions You
may not be able to unlock your vehicle
using the convenience key .
- For an explanation on conformity with
the FCC regulations in the United States
and the Industry Canada regulations, re

page 285.
Unlocking/locking with the key
In the event that the power locking system
fails, the driver's door can locked and un
locked using the door lock .

When locking the vehicle with the central
locking switch, the following applies:
- Opening the door and the Luggage compart
ment lid from the
outside is not possible
(for security such as when stopped at a
light).
- The
LED in the central locking switch turns
on when all doors are closed and locked .
- You can open the doors individually from the
inside by pulling the door handle.
- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy
ment, the doors unlock automatica lly to al
low access to the vehicle.
A WARNING
- The power locking switch works with the
ignit ion off and automat ically locks the
entire vehicle when the@! button is
pressed.

- Always remove the ignition key when you
leave your vehicle, even for a short peri
od of time . This applies particularly when
children remain in the vehicle . Otherw ise
the chi ldren could start the engine or op
erate electrical equ ipment such as power
windows. The power windows continue
to function unt il the driver's door or
front passenger's door has been opened .
- Pay carefu l attent ion when closing the
window.
It could cause injury by pinch
ing.
- When locking the veh icle from outs ide,
the vehicle must be unoccupied s ince the
windows can no longer be opened in an eme rgency.

After turning the ignition off you can still
open and close the windows for approxi
mate ly 10 seconds. The powe r windows
are not switc hed off until the dr iver's door

· Convenience opening /closing
With the convenience opening/closing func
tion, you can centrally and easily open the
windows from the outside.

key until all windows have reached the de

w indows have reached the desired position.
Convenience clo sing
"' Ho ld the key in the driver's door lock in the
lock posit ion unti l all windows are closed .

"'Touch the sensor* in one of the door handles
until all windows are closed. Do not p lace
your hand in the door handle when do ing
this.

- Never close the w indows carelessly or in
a n uncontrolled manner, because this in
creases the risk of inju ry.
- For secur ity reasons, the w indows can
only be opened with the remote control
key at a ma ximum d istance of approxi
mate ly 6 fee t (2 meters) from the vehi
cle.
- Always watch the windows while they are
clos ing using the loc k cylinder so that no
one is pinched in the window. C losing

Correcting power window malfunctions
After disconnecting the vehicle battery, the one -touch up and down feature must be acti
vated again.
• Pull the power window switch until the win
dow is comp lete ly raised.
• Release the switch and pull it again for at
l east one second.
