Seats and storage Folding down the front seat backs
- Lift the latch=> page 79, fig. 8 2.

Moving the front seats forward

Moving front seats back
-Press and ho ld t he switc h@ until th e seat has reached t he
des ired position. The seat stops a utomatically when it has
reached its starting position again .
To make it easier to enter and leave the rear seat , t h e seatbacks of the
front sea ts ca n be folded forward and the he ad restraints are a uto ­
matically lowered . At the same time, the front seats can be moved
forward and back.
W hen the front seats a re moved forward, their or ig inal position is
sto red . When it is moved back, the seat automat ically stops in this
posit io n. T o move the seat even further b ack, you have to release the
switch @ and reactivate it.
T he head rest raints from the front sea ts, depending on t he se at
height that has been set, a re a utomatically retracted when t he seat­
backs are folded down. They return to their or iginal position again
when the sea tbacks for the fron t seats a re ra ised .
(I) Tips
With the driver 's o r passenger's door closed, the corresponding
switch to move the seat is inoperative. •

Memory for driver's seat
The seat adjustment settings for t wo drivers can be
stored using the memory buttons in the driv er's door .

Seat memory
In additio n to the setting for the driver's seat, the exterior rear v iew
m irror setting ca n be stored and reca lled throug h seat memory if the
veh icle is properly equipped.
Storing and recalling settings
With the he lp of the memory b uttons 1 a nd 2 ~ fig. 83 the settings
for two different drivers can be stored and recalled~
page 81.
The cur rent settings are also automatically stored on the remote
c o ntrol key being used when the vehicle is locke d. Whe n the vehicle is
unlocked, the settings stored on the remote contro l key being used
are autom atic ally re calle d.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the [ ON/OFF ] switc h is depressed , th e seat memo ry is inoperative.
The word
OFF in the [ ON/OFF] sw itch illuminates .
All the stored setti ngs are retained . We recommend using the
I O N/OFF ] switch and deact ivating the seat memory if the vehicle is .,

only going to be used temporarily by a driver whose settings are not
going to be stored. •

Storing and recalling settings
Before you can store or recall your settings, the [ ON/OFF]
switch on the seat memory must be engaged (not raised).
Storing settings
- Adjust the driver's seat.
- Adjust the two exterior mirrors .
- Press the
I SETI button and hold it down. In addition, press
one of the memory buttons for at least one second .
- Release the buttons. The settings are now stored under
the corr esponding memory button .
Recalling settings
- If the driver's door is open, tap the corresponding memory
button briefly .
- If the driver's door is closed , press the appropriate
memory button unt il the stored position is reached .
Successful storage is confirmed audibly and by the light in the [SET)
button illuminat ing=> page 80, fig . 83 .
When the vehicle is
loc ked , the current settings are stored and
ass igned to the remote contro l key. B ut the setti ngs sto red on
memory buttons 1 to 2 are not deleted. They can be reca lled at any
time. When the vehicle is
unlo ck ed , the settings stored on the
remote control key are restored.
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using your remote control
key , you should save your individua l seat position on one of the

memory buttons. You can recall your settings again simply and
conveniently by press ing the cor responding memory button. When
the vehicle is locked, these settings are automatically re-assigned to
the remote control key and stored.

- Return the cigarette lighter to its socket .
Using the socket
- Remove the cigarette lighter.
- Insert the plug of the electrical device into the cigarette
ligh ter socke t.
The socket o f the ciga re tte lighter may be used for 12-volt appliances
w ith maximum consumption of up to 100 watts, such as a flash light,
small vacuum cleane r, etc.
Before you purchase any accessor ies, always read and follow the
information in =>
page 345, "Additional accessor ies and parts
replacement" .

• Use care wh en u sing the cigar ette lighter . Inattentive or unsu ­
pervised u se of the cigarette lighter can cause burns -risk of
injury!
• The cigarette lighter work s when the ignition is swit ched off or
w ith the ignition key removed . Children should nev er be left unsu ­
pervised in the vehicle, or there could be risk of fire!
• The po wer outlets and therefore the electrical accesso ries
c onnected to them ope rate only with the ignition on . Improper
use of the outlet s or of electrical acce ssor ies can lead to serious
injurie s or cau se a fire. For this rea son , children should ne ver be
left unatt ended in the veh icle -they could be injured!

• To avoid damag ing the socket, only use plugs that fit p roperly . •
Only use the cigarette lighter socket as a power source for elec­
t rical accessories for short du rat ions. Use the socke ts * in the vehi cle
w hen a power sou rce is needed for longer durations .

Storage compartments in the front seats
& WARNING
• Alway s re mo ve object s from the instrument panel. Any item s
not put away could slide ar ound in side the vehicle while d riving or
wh en accelerating or when apply ing the brake s or wh en driving
around a co rner .
• When you ar e driving make sure that anything you may have
pla ced in the center console o r othe r st orage lo cation s cannot fall
out into the footwell s. In case of sudden braking you would not be
able to brake, depress the clutch or accelerate. •

Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and can be locked.

- Pull the handle in the direction of the arrow~ fig. 93 and
swing the cov er down to open .
To close glove compartment
-Push t he glove compartment lid upward until the lock
engages.
T here are holders for a pen and a pad of paper in the glove compart­
ment lid .
On the right side in the glove compartment is a holder with the key
body into which the emergency key must be clipped to be able to start
the vehicle.
& WARNING
To reduce the risk o f personal injury in an accident o r sudden stop ,
always keep the glove compartment closed while driving. •

Deluxe automatic climate control
Applies to vehicles: with deluxe automat ic climate cont ro l
Description
The climate control system can be used to set a comfort­
able temperature inside the vehicle .
The climate control system is a combination of a heating and ventila­
tion system as well a cooling system respons ible for dehumid ifying
and cooling the air inside the vehicle.
Th e automatic climate control system automatically maintains a
temperature once it has been set. The temperature of the air from
the vents, fan speed (air volume) and air distribution are a lso auto­
matically adjusted . The system also takes into account strong
sunlight so that manual adjustment is not necessary . So in almost all
cases, automatic mode offers the best conditions for the comfort of
the occupants at all times of the year=>
page 90.
Please note the following :
The cooling mode lowers the humidity level inside the vehicle. This
prevents fogging up of the windows.
In the case of high outside humidity and temperatures,
condensation
can drip from the air conditioning system evaporator and form a pool
under the veh icle. This is normal and not an indication of leaks!
At low outs ide temperatures, the fan automatically switches to a
higher speed when the coolant reaches a sufficient temperature
except in the defroster position.
When starting with full throttle, the compressor of the automatic
climate control system is temporarily switched off to achieve full
engine power.
T o ensure engine cooling when the engine is under an extreme load,
the compressor is switched off at h igh coolant temperatures.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filter (particle filter) ensures that impurities in the
outs ide a ir (e.g. dust, pollen) and odors are significantly reduced or
stopped. The air is also filtered in recirculation mode.
Th e pollutant filter e lement must be changed at the intervals speci­
fied in the service plan so that the performance of the automatic
climate control system is not impaired.
If the effect iveness of the filter decreases premat urely due to opera­
tion of the vehicle in areas with significant pollution, the filter
element must be changed between the specified service dates.
Key recognition
The current climate control settings are automatically stored and
assigned to the key being used. The settings assigned to the key are
restored automatically when the vehicle is started. These settings are
different when the power top is open or closed. Each driver can use
his or her preferred settings witho ut having to man ually adjust them
when using their own key.
If another driver changes the settings while using your key, your
prefer red sett ings will be erased.
Energy management
To prevent the battery from be ing discharged and to restore the
balance of energy, components which require large amounts of
energy are temporarily cut back or switched off=>
page 247. Heating
systems in partic ular require a great dea l of energy. If you notice, for
example, that the rear window heater is not heating , the n it has been
temporarily reduced or switched off by
energy management . These
systems are available again as soon as the energy balance has been
restored. .,,_

Deluxe automatic climate control
plus

Description
The air conditioner is fully automatic and is designed to
maintain a comfortable and uniform climate inside the
vehicle.
We recommend the following settings:
- Set the temperature to 75
°F (+23 °C).
- Press the [AUTO] button .
With this setting, you attain maximum comfort in the least amount
of time. Change this setting, as desired, to meet your personal needs.
The climate controls are a combination of heating, ventilation and
cooling systems, which automatically reduce humidity and cool the
air inside your vehicle.
The climate control automatically maintains a temperature once it has been set. The temperature of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air volume) and air distribution are also automatically adjusted . The
system also takes into account strong sunshine so that manual
adjustment is not necessary . So in almost all cases ,
automatic mode
offers the best conditions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year:::::,
page 97.
Please note the following:
Turn on the air conditioner to reduce humidity in the vehicle. This also
prevents the windows from fogging up.
When the outside temperature is high and the air is very humid,
condensation from the evaporator may drip under the vehicle . This is
normal and does not indicate a leak.

If the outside temperature is
low, the fan normally only switches to a
higher speed once the engine coolant has warmed up sufficiently .
The air conditioner temporarily switches off when you drive off from
a standstill using full throttle to save engine power.
The compressor also switches off if the coolant temperature is too
high, so that t he engine can be adequately cooled under ex treme
loads.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filter (particle filter) ensures that impurities in the
outside air (e.g. dust, pollen) and odors are significantly reduced or
stopped . The air is also filtered in recirculation mode.
The pollutant filter element must be changed at the intervals speci­

Starting engine with the key
The ignition is switched on and the engine started with
the ignition key.

By pressing the key without stepp ing on the clutch or the b rake, the
ign itio n is switc hed on and o ff . With the ignition on, the steeri ng
w heel is unlocked.
You can o nly remove the key with the ig nition switc hed off . To do this,
you have to press on the key ag ain. Wi th an a utomat ic transm iss io n,
the selector lever must be in the P pos ition.
W hen s tarting the engine, major electrica l loads a re swi tched off
temporarily .
After startin g a cold engine, there may be a brief period of increased
noise be cause the oil p ress ure mu st firs t b uild up in t he hydr auli c
valve adjuste rs. This is normal and not a cause for concern. If
the eng ine s hould not start immediately, the starting process is
a u tom atically st op ped aft er a sh ort t ime. Re peat sta rtin g p ro cedu re.

Otherwise, the engine could be started or electrical equipment

• Never leave children or per sons requiring assistan ce unat­
tended in the vehicle. The doors can be locked u sing the remote
transmitter, p reventing people from escaping from the vehicle on
their own in the event of an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be exposed to very high or very low temperatures. ..,

• Never remo ve the ignition key from the ignition look while the
vehicle is moving. Otherwi se, the steering lock could suddenly
engage and you would not be able to steer the vehicle.

• In the event of a malfunction in the electronic ignit ion lock a

Ignition
lock defective .
• Avoid h igh eng ine speeds, fast acce lerat ion or heavy eng ine loads

To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emiss ions,
do not let your vehicle s tand and w arm up. Be re ady to dr ive off i mme­

operat ing temperature.

Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circ umstances, the engine can be
switched off while the vehicle is mov ing . The eng ine will be switched
off if you press on the key for an extended period.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop .
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off, you ha ve to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accident s and serious injuries.
• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minute s even
after you have turned of f the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on a gain if the engine coolant heats
up becau se of intense sunlight or heat build-up in the engine
compartment.

Do not stop the engine immediately after har d or extended dr iving.

By pressing the [START ENGINE STOP] button without depressing
the clutch or the brake peal, the ignition is switched on and sw itched
off by pressing it again .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10 seconds
and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
After a co ld engine is started, there may be a brief period of increased
noise because oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve
adjusters. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
Driver message in the instrument cluster display
No key identified
This message appears when the !START ENGINE STOP] button is
pressed if there is no master key ins ide the veh icle or if the system
does not recognize it. For example, the master key cannot be recog­
nized if it is covered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief case) which
screens the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can
also interfere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the !STAR T ENGINE STOP)
button to start the engine and do not depress the brake pedal. The
eng ine can only be started if the brake peda l is depressed.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to start the engine if the
selector lever for the automatic transmission is not in the P or N posi­
tion. The engine can on ly be started with the selector in these posi­
tions.
Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the.:! symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch on the
ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
eng ine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the outside
w ith the key.
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P .
This message appears for safety reasons along with a wa rning signal.
It appears if the selector lever for the automatic transmission is not
in the P position when switching off the ignition with the
!START ENGINE STOP] button. Move the selector lever to the P _..

les s than 6 mph / 10 km /h.

force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop normally , this can lead to accidents and serious injuries .
• For safety reasons, you should always park your vehicle with
the selector lever in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inadvertently
roll away .
• After the engine has been switched off , the radiator fan can
continue to run for up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off. It can also switch on again after some time if the
coolant temperature rises as the result of a heat buildup or if the
engine is hot and the engine compartment is additionally heated
by the sun's rays.
