Ignition lock and ignition switch
Starting engine with the key
The ignition is switched on and the engine started with
the ignition key.

Insert the key into the ignit ion lock .
Manual transmission : Fully depress the clutch pedal a nd

Automatic transmission*: Step on the brake peda l and
move the selector lever to the
P or N posit ion.

By pressing the key w ithout stepping on the clutch or the brake, the
ign ition is switched on and off. With the ignition on, the steering
whee l is unlocked.
You can only remove the key with the ignition switched off. To do
this, you have to press on the key again. With an automatic trans­ mission, the selector lever m ust be in the
P position.
When starting the engine, major electrical loads are switched off
temporarily. After starting a cold engine
, there may be a brief period of increased
noise because the o il pressure must first build up in the hydraulic
valve adjusters . This is normal and not a cause for concern .
I f the engine should not start immediately, the starting process is
automatically stopped a fter a short t ime . Repeat starting procedure.

This message appears if you do not step on the brake pedal to start
the engine on a vehicle with an automatic transmission .

Engage N or P to start engine
This message appea rs when attempting to start the engine if the
selector lever for the automatic transmission is not in the
P or N
position . The engine can only be started with the selec tor in these
positions.

P.
This message appears for safety reasons along with a warning
signal. It appears if the selector lever for the automatic transmiss ion
is not in the
P p o sition after the ign it ion is switched off. Move the
selector lever to the
P position, otherwise the vehicle is not secured
aga inst ro lling away. You a lso cannot l ock the vehicle using the
locking bu tton on the door handle or using the remote key .
& WARNING
• Always take the key with you wheneve r you leave yo ur vehi cle .
Otherwi se , the engine could be start ed or electr ical equipment
s u ch as the po wer windows could be oper ated . Th is ca n lead to
seri ous injury.

• Never le ave children or per son s requiring a ssis ta nce unat­
te nded in the veh icle . The do ors can be locked u sing the remote
tr ansmitter, pre venting people from es caping fro m the vehi cle on
their own in t he event of an emergen cy. D epending on the time of
year , people inside the veh icle can be e xpo sed to ver y high or very
low t emperature s.
• Never remove the ignit ion key from t he ig nition loo k while the
v ehic le is moving . Othe rwi se, the steering lock could sudden ly
e ngage and you w ould not be able to steer the ve hicle .

• In the event of a malfunction in the electronic ignition lock a
symbol in the ins trument cluster flashes with the message
Ign ition
l ock defe cti ve .
• Avo id high engine speeds, fast acce leration or heavy engine
loads while the engine is sti ll cold. This could damage the engine.
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emis ­
sions, do not let your vehic le stand and war m up. Be ready to drive
off immediate ly after starting your vehicle . Maintain moderate
speed until the engine is completely warm . Remember, the engine
performs best a t operating temperature .

• If the key cannot be removed from the ignition lock, you have to
pul l the mechanica l key out of the master key in orde r to be ab le to
lock the vehic le The vehicle can be locked with the mechanical key
=> page 40.
• I f you open the driver's door with the ignition switched on , a
buzzer sounds and the message
Ignition i s on appears in the instru ­
ment cluster display. Switch the ignition off .•

Stopping the engine
Bring t he vehicle to a full s to p.
- Automatic transmission*: Move t he selector lever to the P
or N posi tion.
Press on the ignition key . The engine is turned off.
Emergen cy off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the engine can be
switched off while the vehic le is moving. The engine will be
switched o ff if you press on the key for an extended pe riod .
& WARNING
• Nev er turn off the engine until the vehicle h as come t o a
c omplete stop.
• The b ra ke boo ster and se rvot ronic onl y work w hen the eng ine
is running . With the ignition turned off , you have to app ly mo re
force when ste ering or br aking . Since you cannot stee r and stop

after you have turned off the engine and remo ved the ign ition ke y.

compartment.

By pressing the [STAR T ENGINE STOP) button without depressing
the c lutch or the brake peal, the ignition is switched on and
switched off by pressing it again .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying a fter 10
seconds and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later .
After a cold engine is sta rted, there may be a brief period of
increased noise because oil pressure must first bu ild up in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause for
concern.

No key ide ntified
This message appears when the [S TART ENGINE ST OP ) button is
pressed if there is no master key inside the vehic le or if the system
does not recognize it . For example, the master key cannot be recog ­
n ized if it is covered by an object (e.g. aluminu m brief case) which
screens the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can
also interfere with the radio signa l.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the I START ENGINE STOP ]
button to start the engine and do not depress the brake pedal. The
engine can only be started if the brake pedal is depressed.
Pre ss clut ch pedal to start engin e
This message appears with a manua l transmission when you press
the
I S T ART ENGINE ST OP l button to start the engine and do not
depress the clu tch pedal. The eng ine can only be started when the
clutch peda l is depressed.
E n ga ge N or P to start engine
This message appea rs when attempting to start the engine if the
selector lever for the automat ic transmission is not in the
P or N
position . The engine can only be started with the se lector in these
pos itions.
Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the symbo l if the master key is
r emoved from the vehic le with the engine r unning. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the maste r key.
I f the master key is no longe r in the vehicle, y ou canno t switch o n
the ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the .,

engine again . Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the
ou tside with the key.

This message appears for safety reasons along with a warning
signal. It appears if the selector lever for the automatic transmission
is not in the P position when switching off the ignition with the

door handle or using the remote key .

This message appears if the vehicle has to be started not with the

• Nev er allow the engine to run in confined spaces · danger of
asphy xia ti on.
• Never turn off th e engine until th e vehicl e ha s come to a
c omplete stop .
• The br ake boo ster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignit ion turned off , you have to apply m ore
force wh en ste ering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop
norm ally , th is c an lead to accidents and serious injuries.

• Avoid high engine rpm, ful l throttle and heavy engine loads unti l
the engine has reached operating temperature -o therwise you risk
engine damage .
• The engi ne cannot be started by pushing or tow ing the vehic le .
• I f the engine has been under heavy load for an extended period,
heat builds up in the engine compa rtment after the engine is

press and hold the

must be less than 6 mph/ 10 km/h.

If the engine has been under heavy load for an extended period ,

Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake .

- Step on t he b rake peda l or the accele rator pedal and
press the switch at the same time to release t he pa rking
brake . The indicato r light in the sw itch goes out .
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechanical parking brake.
The parking brake is designed to prevent the vehicle from roll ing
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
elec tromechanica l pa rk ing brake provides various convenie nce and
safety functions.
When starting from rest
• T he integral starting assist he lps you when driving by automati ­
cally re leasing the parking brake~ page 113, "Starting from rest" .
• When starting on inclin es, the star ting assist prevents the
vehic le fro m unintentionally rolling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been
built up at the whee ls .
Em erg en cy b rake f uncti on
An emergency brake ensures that the vehic le can be slowed down
even if the normal brakes fail~ page 114, "Emergency braking".
Indicator light s
• If the parking brake is closed with the ignition switched on the
indicator lights come on:!, (USA models)/ ®) (Canada models) in
the instrument cluster and the switch.
• If the parking brake is closed w ith the ignition
s witched off the
indicator lights com e on =:, (USA models) /® ) (Canada models) in
the instrument clus ter and the switch for about 20 seconds. ._

On the road -
----------------
& WARNING
If a gear or a drive range (automatic transmission) is engaged with
the vehicle stationary and the engine running, you must in no
instance accelerate or release the clutch carelessly . Otherwise the
vehicle will start to move immediately -risk of an accident.
0 Note
If the symbol (CD) in the display or the indicator light BRAKE (USA
models)/ {(i)) (Canada models) in the instrument cluster flashes, there
is a malfunction in the brake system. By pressing the
[SET] button,
you can bring up a driver message which explains the malfunction in more detail. If the driver message
Parking brake! appears, there
is an operating malfunction in the parking brake which you should
have repaired immediately by an authorized Audi dealer or other
qualified workshop ~
page 29.
[ i] Tips
• You can apply the parking brake at any time -even with the igni ­
tion turned off. The ignition must be turned on in order to release
the parking brake.
• Occasional noises when the parking brake is applied and
released are normal and are not a cause for concern.
• When the vehicle is parked, the parking brake goes through a
self -test cycle at regular intervals. Any associated noises are
normal. •
Parking
Various rules apply to prevent the parked vehicle from
rolling away accidentally.
Parking
- Stop the vehicle with the foot brake.
Controls and equip ­
ment
- Pull the switch to apply the parking brake.
- Automatic transmission*: Move the selector lever to
P.
- Turn the engine off=:,& .
- Manual transmission: Shift into 1st gear.
In addition on inclines and grades
-Turn the steering wheel so that your vehicle will roll
against the curb in case it should start to move.
& WARNING
• When you leave your vehicle -even if only briefly -always
remove the ignition key. This applies particularly when children
remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the children could start the
engine, release the parking brake or operate electrical equipment
(e.g. power windows). There is the risk of an accident.
• When the vehicle is locked, no one -particularly not children
should remain in the vehicle. Locked doors make it more difficult
for emergency workers to get into the vehicle -putting lives at
risk. •
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the parking
brake is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying parking brake
-Pull the switch to apply the parking brake.
Starting and automatically releasing the parking
brake
-When you start to drive as usual, the parking brake is
automat ically released and your vehicle begins to move . .,..

may vary, depending on the type of display in your vehicle. The indi­
cator light
CRUISE (US model)/ (7)0 (Canadian model) will also light up
in the instrument cluster .
The speed is kept constant by modifying engine power or through
an active brake intervention.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise
control is in operation. You are always responsible for your speed
and the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For reasons of safety, cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and-go traffic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you could have an accident.
• Switch the cruise control off temporarily when driving in
turning lanes, highway exits or in construction zones.
• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal causes cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the driver's acceleration.
[ i] Tips
• Vehicles with manual transmission: You can attain the set speed
only if the gear that is currently engaged will allow it, or if it does not tax the engine and allows it to run smoothly. Therefore shift into
a higher or lower gear in a timely manner.
• The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically .•
Changing speed
- Press the lever in the direction of the 0 ~ page 115,
fig. 120 or in the direction of the Q to increase or
decrease your speed. -
Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/hi by lightly pressing
the lever . If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your
speed in 5 mph (10 km/hi increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed, e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved
earlier will resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo­
rarily. The green symbol in the display turns white, the saved speed
is retained .•
Pre -selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
Turn on the ignition.
- Pull lever into position 1

Press the lever in the
0 or Q direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before driving on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward
(D. •
Switching off
Temporary deactivation
- Step on the brake pedal, or

Switching off completely

The speed you saved wil l be retained if the cruise control has been
switched off temporarily . To resume the saved speed, let up on the
brake or clutch peda l and pu ll the lever to position
G) .
The saved speed wil l be erased after turning the ignition off .
& WARNING
You should only resume the saved speed if it is not too high for
exi sting traffi c condition s. Otherwi se you ri sk an accident . •

• Always turn off adaptive cruise control when entering turn
lanes, highway exit lanes and construction zones or similar situa­
tions because the vehicle will automatically accelerate to the
stored speed.
• Never rest your foot on the accelerator pedal, especially when
the adaptive cruise control is being used because doing so will override the braking function and prevent the brakes from being
applied by the system when it detects a situation when the brakes
must be applied.
• Always remember that the adaptive cruise control has limits -
it does not react when you drive towards an obstacle or some­
thing else on or near the road that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped in a traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
• Always remember that the adaptive cruise control cannot
detect a vehicle that is driving towards you in your traffic lane and
that it cannot detect narrow vehicles such as motorcycles and
bicycles .
[ i] Tips
• For safety reasons, the stored speed is deleted when the ignition
is turned off.
• The Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) and the Anti -Slip
Regulation (ASR) cannot be deactivated when the adaptive cruise
control is switched on. If the ESP and the Anti -Slip Regulation (ASR)
has been deactivated and you then switch on the adaptive cruise
control, the ESP function will also be activated automatically.
• Damage caused by accidents (e.g. if the vehicle is damaged
when parking) can affect the radar sensor settings. This can cause
the system to malfunction or switch off completely.
• The radar sensor cover is heated. In winter conditions, you
should still check before driving to make sure it is free of ice and
snow. If necessary, clean the area near the radar sensor carefully
=>
page 118, fig. 122.

• To ensure that the radar sensor is not blocked, foreign objects
(e.g. stickers, add -on parts) must not cover the area near the radar
sensor=>
page 118, fig. 122. The area near the radar sensor must
not be painted, either.

How does adaptive cruise control work?
Vehicles traveling ahead are detected with the aid of a
radar sensor.

A radar sensor is built into the front of the vehicle=> fig. 123, which
is subject to certain system limits=>
page 130. Stationary objects
are not taken into consideration. The system is intended to measure
the distance to reflective surfaces. The system responds after the
distance measurement has taken place. If a measurement is not
possible, the system does not respond.
Open road
When the road is clear, the adaptive cruise control works like cruise
control. It maintains a constant target speed specified by the driver .~

How is the speed stored ?

Storing speed
With the system switched on the speed is stored as follows:
- Drive at the speed you want. The speed must be between
20 and 95 mph (30 and 150 km/hl.
- Press the
I SET I button ~ fig. 125 to store the desired
speed.
After the I SET j button is released , the current speed is stored and
maintained .
The saved speed is now shown in the LED display in the speedom ­
eter by one or two illuminated red light diodes=>
page 125. At the
same time, the saved spe ed is also shown for a short time in the
Information line::::>
page 127.

Reducing speed
- Press the lever downwards briefly Q. USA models: the
speed decreases by 2.5 mph. Canada models: speed will
decrease by one mark on the speedometer scale. _,.
