Setting the signal brightness on the
outside mirror
The signal brightness con be set in the radio or MM!*.
- Select: Function button [CAR ]> Audi side assist -lamp.
- Rotate the control knob to adjust the displayed brightness
of the signal light on the outside mirrors.
The brightness of the signal light for both the informational and alert
stages is automatically adjusted to ambient light conditions. In addi­
tion, you can adjust the
basic brightness separately, via the bright­
ness funct ion.
While making the adjustment, the new brightness setting is displayed briefly. The brightness displayed is that of the informa­
tional stage signal. The alert stage signal brightness is linked to the
informational stage signal brightness.
The informat ional stage signal brightness should be adjusted so that
you notice the signal illumination when you look in the outside
mirror, but not when you look forward through the windshield.
In very dark or light surroundings, the automatic brightness setting
adjusts signal light brightness to maximum or minimum intensity , as
needed. In circumstances such as these, you may not notice any
change in the brightness on the outside mirror when adjusting the
basic brightness.
You may not notice the change until lighting conditions are normal
again.

& WARNING
• Improper reliance on the side assist system can cause collisions
and serious personal injury:
-Never rely only on side assist when changing lanes .
- Always check rear view mirrors to make sure that it is safe to
change lanes.
• Side assist cannot detect all vehicles under all conditions­
danger of accident!
• Side assist cannot detect vehicles in time to alert you when
they approach from behind at very high speed , or fall drop back
very quickly .
• The radar sensor's
vision can be reduced or entirely blocked by
rain, snow, and heavy spray. This can result in side assist not
adequately detecting vehicles or, in some cases , not detecting
them at all. Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling and the relevant area around the vehicle .
• Please note that side ass ist indicates there are approaching
vehicles, or vehicles in your blind spot, only after your vehicle has reached a driving speed of at least 19 mph (30 km/h).
• Side assist signal does not work around tight corners (turning
radius less than 328 feet, or 100 m ).
• Side assist is no replacement for the driver's full attention . The
driver alone is responsible for lane changes and similar driving
maneuvers. Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle. .,,

Introduction
Audi drive se lect provides the possib ility to experience different types
o f vehicle se ttings in one ve hicle. For ins tan ce, using the t hree
COMFORT, AUTO and DYNA MIC modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a com fortab le dr iv ing mode with the p ress of a bu tton .
Add itionally, in ve hicles with MMI*, the veh icle se tup for I NDI­
VIDUAL * mo de can be c ustomized by you. This makes it poss ib le to
combi ne sett ings such as a sporty engi ne tuning w it h light st eering.

Description
The ve hicle setup in eac h mode depends on the vehicle's features.
However, the engine and servo tron ic are always affe cted . The auto ­

e Servotronic (st ee ring s ervo assistance) ~ page 242 can a lso be
adapted to d riving situations.
Dynamic steering c hanges the s teer ing ra tio as a func tion of the
dr iv ing speed in order to optimize the driver's required steering
effor t. T his se ts the s teer ing to be less sensi tive at hig he r speeds in
orde r to provide greate r co ntro l over the ve hicle. At reduced speeds,
however, steering is more direct in o rder to keep the stee rin g effort
as min imal as possible whe n the dr ive r is maneuvering the vehicle. At
low and average speeds, dynam ic steer ing add it iona lly p rovides more
respo nsive steer ing pe rfo rmance. The dr iver can set the basic
steering ratio characteristics.
Th e
adaptive dampers use senso rs to recor d info rmat io n regar ding
steering movements, braking and acce lera tion operations by the
dr ive r, road sur face, driving speed, and lo ad . T his makes i t possib le to
adapt damp ing to the driving si tuat ion v irt ua lly in r eal t ime . Audi
dr ive select a lso makes it poss ible to satisfy the desire fo r sporty
s u spension (DY NAMIC) and comfortab le sus pension (COMFOR T)
without giving up balanced tun ing (A UTO) .

Driving the automatic transmission
Starting the engine

Starting off
- Press and hold the brake pedal.

In certa in circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the manual shift program to manually select gear rat ios to

Select this position for sportie r performance. In this position, the
transm ission will not upsh ift as soon, allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher eng ine speeds to ach ieve livelier
acceleration .

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acci­
dentally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as fo llows:
- Turn the ignit ion on.
- Step on the brake pedal.
At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the s ide of the gear selector knob
=> fig . 147 with your thumb until you have moved the
selector lever to the desired position. .,

This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unnecessarily
on hills . Th e transmission will shift down to a lower gear when the
driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This makes use
of the braking effect of the engine without the need to shift down
manually .•

Switching to manual shift program
-Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display.
To upshift
- Push the selector lever forward to the plus position 0
~ fig. 148.
To downshift
- Push the lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transmission will automat ica lly shift into the
next gear before the engine reaches its maximum RPM.
If you apply a light throttle when accelerating, tiptr onic will automat­
ically shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle, the transmission will stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached, or until the dr iver sh ifts i nto 2nd gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when driving down a
steep incline , tiptronic will downshift from the selected gear into the
next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear , based on road speed and
eng ine RPM. Automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you
apply the throttle again.
[ i ] Tips
• When you shif t into the next lower gear, the transmission will
downshift on ly when there is no possibility of over-revving the
engine.
• When the kick-down comes on, the transmission will shift down to
a lower gear, depending on vehicle and engine speeds.
• tiptronic is inoperative when the transmission is in the fail-safe
mode. •

The emergency release is located under the insert for the
ashtray .
- Slide open the cover for the ashtray .
- Release the ashtray by pushing the switch©=>

- Remove the ashtray insert @.
- Now you can see a small cover in the ashtray holder on the
front of the ashtray recess.
- Release and remove this cover.
- You now have access to a bolt. Using a screwdriver or similar, press the bolt down and hold it down=> fig. 152.
- Now press the interlock and move the selector lever to the
N position .
The selector lever can only be moved from the P position if the igni­
tion key is in the lock and the ignit io n is tur ned on. If the vehicle has
to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails (e.g. battery is
discharged), the selector lever must first be moved to the
N position
using the emergency locking device .•

Please note that low objects a lready s ignalled by a war ning can disap­

If the distance to an obstacle remains t he same, the vo lume of the
dis tan ce warn ing is gradu ally redu ced af ter abou t 4 seco nds.
Approaching another obstacle will result in the distance warning
s ou nding a t th e normal vo lume aga in.
Malfunctions in the system
If a wa rning tone is aud ible fo r about five seconds when you turn o n
the ignition , there is a ma lfunction in the system. Have the prob lem
c o rrected by yo ur auth orized Aud i de aler.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and free from ice so t hat
t he acous tic par k ass ist system can func tion prope rly.
& WARNING
• Sens ors have dead space s in whi ch objects cannot be dete cted.
Be especi ally alert for small children and animals , since they are
not alway s detected by the sen sors.
• The acou stic parking system is not a substitute for the dr iver 's
own caution and alertne ss. Ultimate respon sibility alway s
remains w ith the driver during parking and similar maneuvers.
Alway s w atch wh ere you are driving .
• You should always adjust the volume and frequency of the
warning tone s so that you can e asily hear the acoustic di stan ce
wa rning e ven if the radio is pl aying, the air -conditioner blowe r is
on High or there i s a high level of out side noi se .
- Check the setting s whenever anyone else has driven the
vehicle before you.

Adjusting the warning tones
The warning tones can be adjusted in the MMI*.
-Select : [CAR]> Parking sy stem .
• Rear volume · rear sensor vol ume
• Rear frequ ency -rear sensor frequency
• In-car entertainment fad er-when the park ing system is switched
on , the vol ume of the active audio source is lowered .
Th e newly adj usted value is br iefly heard from the signa l gene rator.
The settings are automatically stored and ass igned to the master key
with remote control. •

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the rear bumpers . If these detect a n obsta cle,
audib le and visual sig nals wa rn you. The range at w hich the sensors
beg in to measure is approximately:

Distan ce warning when reversing s tarts w hen an obsta cle is detec ted
in the range of the parking ass ist system. As the d ista nce decreases,
t he time in te rval between the audib le tones becomes shorter .
When the dis tance is less tha n 1ft
(0.30 m), the tone becomes
cont inuo us. At th is point yo u should stop back ing up.
If the dis tance to an obs tacle stays the s am e, t he volume o f the
distance signal chime is grad ually reduced after about
4 seconds
(does not affe ct the conti nuous signal tone) . App roac hing an oth er
obs tacle w ill cause the distance sig nal to sound aga in at t he normal
vol ume.
Rear view camera coverage area
Th e MM I display s hows the area covere d by the rea r view c amera

page 160, fig. 15 5 G). Objects that a re not in the area covered @
are not s hown on the MMI dis play .
W e recommend that you prac tice parking w ith th e rear v iew camera
in a traff ic-free location o r parking lot to become fam iliar with the
system, the or ientat ion lines, a nd their functi on . W hen doing this,
there should be good light and weathe r cond itions.
I n the MMI di spla y, obje cts o r ve hicl es appea r closer or fu rt h er aw ay
if:
• you are dr iv ing in reverse gea r from a level sur face onto an incline,
or a dow nwar d slop e,
• you are drivin g in reverse gear toward protrud ing ob jects,

• The parking aid cannot replace the driver's attention. The
driver alone is responsible for parking and similar driving maneu •
vers.
• Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's surroundings, using the
rear view mirror as well.
• Do not allow yourself to be distracted from traffic by the rear
view camera pictures.
• If the position and the installation angle of the camera has
changed, for example, after a rear end collision, do not continue
to use the system for safety reasons. Have it checked by a qualified dealership .
