Move the windshield wiper lever to the corre­
spond ing pos ition:
@ -Windshie ld w iper off
(D -Interva l mode. To extend/shorten the
wipe r intervals , move the switch @ to the
left/right. In veh icles with a rain sensor*, the
windshie ld wipers are act ivated automat ically
start ing at a speed of 2 mp h (4 km/h) . The
h igher the sensitivity of the rain sensor* is set
(switch @ to the right), the earlier the wind­
shie ld wipers react to mois ture on the wi nd­
shield.
@ -Slow wiping
®-Fast wiping

® -Clean the wi ndshield . T o e liminate water
d ro pl ets , the w indshield wiper performs one
afterwipe operation after several seconds
while driving. You can switch this function off
by mov ing the lever to position ® within 10
seconds of the afterw ipe operation . The after­
wipe function is reactivated the next time the
ignit io n is switched on .
C lea ning the headlights *. The headlight wash­
er system* only functions when the light is
switched on . The headlights are automatically
cleaned the first t ime and every fifth time the
lever is moved to position ®· T hey are also
cleaned every time you hold the lever in posi­
tion ® for longer than 2 seconds. Clear vi

A WARNING
- The rain sensor is only intended to assist
the dr iver. The driver is st ill responsible
for manually switch ing the wipers on ac­
cording to the visibility cond it ions .
- The windsh ield may not be treated with
wate r-repell ing windsh ield coating
age nts. Unfavo rable cond it io ns, such as
we tness, dar kne ss, low sun, can result in
increased glare. Wiper blade chatter is
also possib le .
- Prope rly f unct ion ing windsh ield wiper
blades are req uired for a clea r view and
safe driving

-In the case of fros t, check whethe r the
w indshield wiper blades are frozen to
t he windsh ield. Sw itch ing on the wind ­
shield wipe rs can damage the wiper
blades!
- Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched off ( lever
in posit ion 0). Th is helps to prevent unin­
tentional switch ing on and damage to
the windsh ield wiper system.
(D Tips
- The windshield w ipers are switched off
when the ign it ion is turned off. Act ivate
the windsh ield wipers after the ignition
is switched bac k on by moving the wind­
shield w iper lever to any position .
- Worn or d irty windshield wipe r blades
result in streaking . This ca n affect the
rain sensor* funct ion . Check yo ur wind­
shield wiper blades regularly.
- T he ra in sensor* is part of the interval
w ip ing system. Turning off the ignition
w ill also deactivate the ra in se nsor* . To
reactiva te the sensor, swit ch off the in­
terval wiping function, then switch it
back on aga in .
- Th e washer f luid no zz les o f the w ind­
shield washer system are heated at low
temperatures when the ignition is on .

-The windshield wiper blades must only
be replaced when in the serv ice position
<=> page 56! Otherwise, you risk damag­
i ng the pa int on t he hood or the wind­
s hi eld wiper motor.

mat ic car washes affect the how easily the

Depend ing on the o utside temperature, the
mirro r sur faces are heated until the ig nition is
switched off -even if the knob is no longer in
pos ition @.
You are we ll-advised to fold the ex ter ior mir ­
rors in when maneuvering in tight spaces o r
when leaving the car parked close to other ve­
hicles.
Memory for e xterior mirrors*
On vehicles wi th memory for t he drive r's sea t,
the cur rent setting for the exter ior mir ro rs is
automat ica lly stored a long with the seat posi­
tion

Tilt function for the passenger's mirror* (only w ith memory fo r exterior mirror s)
When the reverse gear is e ngaged, the mirro r
surface tilts downward slightly if the setting
i s for the passenger's mirror (knob in pos ition
® ¢fig . 62). This allows you to see the curb
dur ing parallel parking .
The mirror returns to its initial position as
soon as reverse gear is disengaged and veh icle
speed is above about 9 mph
(15 km/h) . The
mirror also retur ns to its init ial position if the
switch is moved to the dr iver's ex terior m irror
© or the ignition is sw itched off .
If the pos ition of the mirror surface is
c hanged on a tilted mirro r, this new position
will be automatically ass igned to th e remote
key w hen the veh icle is taken o ut of reverse
gear.
CD Note
Cu rved mirror surfaces (co nvex o r sph eri­
ca l*) increase your f ie ld of view . Remem ­
b er that ve hicl es o r othe r ob jects w ill ap­
p ear sm aller and farthe r away t han when
seen in a fla t mirro r. If you use t his mirror
to estimate distances of fo llowing vehicles
when chan ging lanes, you could est imate
i ncorrect ly and cause an accident.

- W hile the vehicle is mov ing, the seat
backs of the front seats must not be in­
clined too far to the rear because the ef­
fectiveness of the safety be lts and the
airbag system is seve rely comp romised -
there is a risk of injury.
Easy entry function
App lies to vehicles: wit h power adjustable seats
The easy entry function makes it easier for
the rear passengers ta enter and leave the ve­
hicle.

To make it eas ier to enter and leave the rear
seat, the seatbacks of the fro nt seats can be
folded fo rward and the head restraints are au­
tomat ica lly lowered . At the same time, the
front seats can be moved forward and back.

> Return the cigarette ligh ter to its socket.
Using the socket
> Remove the cigarette lighter.
> Insert the plug of the electrical device into
t h e ciga rette lighter socket .
The socket of the cigarette lighter may be
used for 12-volt appliances with max imum
consumption of up to 100 watts, such as a
flash light, small vacuum cleane r, etc.

- Use care when using the c igarette light-
er . Inattent ive or unsuperv ised use of the
cigarette lighter can ca use burns -risk of

- The cigarette lighter works when the ig­ nition is switched off o r with the ignition
key removed. Child ren shou ld never be
left unsuperv ised in the vehicle, or the re
co uld be risk of fire!
- T he power outlets and therefore the
elec tric al accessor ies connec ted to them
operate only with t he ignit ion on. Im­
p roper use of the outlets or of elect rical
accessories can lead to serious i nju ries or
cause a fire . For th is reason, children
should never be left unattended in the
veh icle -they could be injured!

- To avoid damagi ng the socket, only use
plugs that fit proper ly.
- Only use the cigarette lighter socket as a
power source for e lectr ica l accessories
for short durations. Use the sockets * in
the vehicle when a power source is need­
ed for longer du rat io ns.
(!) Tips
When the engine is off and accessories are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery can still be d rained.

Rear window defogger~
Applies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic climate control
The rear window defogger clears the rear win­
dow of condensation .
.. Press the@il button to turn the rear window
defogger on and off.
The rear window defogger works only when
the eng ine is running. The indicator light in
the button illuminates when the rear window
defogger is on.
The rear window defogger is switched off au­
tomatically after 10 to 20 minutes, depend­
ing on the outside temperature.
The rear w indow defogger can be turned on
permanently by pressing the@il button for
more than two seconds. This rema ins stored
until the ignition is switched off. A rear w in­
dow defogger that was switched on also re­
mains stored for 15 minutes after the ignition
is switched off.
If the engine is restarted within these 15 mi­
nutes, the rear window defogger is act ivated
for 10 to 20 mi nutes, depend ing on outs ide
temperature . When a veh icle is parked for a
shor t time, the rear w indow defogger does
not need to be man ually ac tivated again.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, yo u
should switch the rea r window defogger
off. The reduced power consumption has a
beneficial effect on fuel consumption.
AC mode ~
Applies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic climate cont rol
Deacti vating

The cooling system is turned on in AC mode.
The heating and ventilation system is control­
led automatically.

minate after AC mode has been turned off
(= turning the AC off), there is a fault in an
a ir-conditioning component. Please con­
su lt an authorized dealership if there is an
operat ing problem.
Economical use of the climate control
system
Applies to vehicles: with deluxe automatic climate control
Economical use of the climate control system
helps save fuel.
When the climate control system is working in
cooling mode, eng ine performance is reduced
and fuel consumpt ion is affected. To keep the
t ime the climate cont ro l system is on as shor t
as possib le, yo u should do the following:

.. In addi tion, if you open the window or the
panorama/t ilting sunroo f* while driving,
turn off cooling mode by pressing the

The air conditioner is fully automatic and is
designed to maintain a comfortable and uni­
form climate inside the vehicle .
We recommend the follow ing settings:

ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as

maximum amount of air flows main ly from
the vents below the windshield.

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The height and reach of the steering wheel
can be adjusted .

There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­ tween your chest and the center of the steer­
ing wheel. If you cannot si t more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you
reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steering whee l.

driver's seat, see

The steering wheel can be adjusted even when
the ign ition is turned off. For vehicles wi th
seat memory, the individual positions for the
steering wheel can be stored a long with the
seat position .
A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury .
-Adjust the steer ing whee l co lumn on ly
when the vehicle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.

- Adjust the driver's seat or steering whee l
so that there is a m inimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steer ing whee l

you cannot maintain th is m inimum dis­
tance, the a irbag system cannot protect
you properly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive equ ipment is ava ilable .
- If the steer ing whee l is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l dr iver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident. Always make sure that the
steer ing whee l is aligned with your
chest .
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag deploys.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steeri ng wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steer ing wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.
Ignition lock and ignition switch
Starting engine with the key
The igni tion is switched on and the engine
started with the ignition key .

~ Manual transmission: Fully depress the
clutch peda l and move the sh ift lever to the
neutral position.

pedal and move the selector lever to the

without stepp ing on the
clutch or the brake, the ig nition is switched o n
and off. With the ignit io n on, t he steer ing
wheel is un locked.
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
sw itched off . T o do this, you have to p ress on
the key aga in. Wi th an a utomat ic transm is­
sion, the se lecto r lever must be in the
P posi­
tion .
When starting the engine, ma jor e lectr ica l
l oads are switched off tempo ra rily .
After start ing a cold engine, there may be a
brief period of increased no ise because the oi l
p ressu re must fi rst build up in the hydraulic
va lve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
fo r concern.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting p rocess is automatically stopped
after a sho rt time . Repeat sta rting p rocedu re.
Driver me ssage in the in strument cluster
display
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appea rs if you do not step on
the brake pedal to sta rt the eng ine on a veh i­
cle with an automat ic transm iss ion.
Press clutch pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not step on
the clutch peda l to start the engine on a ve hi­
cle with a manua l transm ission .
Engage Nor P to start engine
T his message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the se lector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the
P or N

posit ion . The engine can only be started wi th
the se lecto r in these positions .
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P .
This message appears for safety reasons
along with a warn ing signal.

-Always take the key w ith you whe never
you leave your ve hicle. O therw ise, the

could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons re quiring
assistance unattended in the ve hicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from t he veh icle on t heir own in
the ev ent of an e merge ncy. D epe nding
on t he time of yea r, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be expo sed to very high o r very
low tempe ra tur es.
- Never re mo ve the ign ition key from the
ig nition lo ok while the veh icle i s m oving .
O the rwise, the s teering lock could su d­
d enly en gage and yo u wo uld not be a ble
to steer the vehicle .

t ronic ignit io n loc k a symbol in the in­

Ignition lock defective .
-Avo id hi gh engine spee ds, fas t a ccelera ­
tion or heavy engine loa ds while the en­
gine is still cold . This could damage the
eng ine.

To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
veh icle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after start ing your
veh icle. Maintain moderate speed until the
engine is comp letely warm. Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature.
@ Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be ab le to loc k the vehicle The ve­
hicle can be locked with the mechanica l
key

-If you open the driver's door wi th the ig­
nit ion switched on, a buzzer sounds and
the message

the ignition off.
Stopping the engine
> Bring the vehicle to a full stop.
> Automatic transmission*: Move the selec ­
tor lever to the
P or N position .
> Press on the ignition key. The engine is
turned off.
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off wh ile the vehicle is
mov ing . The engine will be switched off if you
p ress on the key for an extended period .
_& WARNING
-Never turn off the eng ine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- T he brake booster and se rvotronic only
work when the engine is running. With
the ignition turned off, you have to apply
more force when steering or braking .
Since you cannot steer and stop norma l­
ly, this can lead to accidents and serious
injuries. -
The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the
ignit ion key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bu ild-up in the engine compa rtment.
(D Note
Do not stop the engine immediately after
hard or extended driving . Keep the engine
runn ing for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excess ive heat bu ild-up .

the eng ine about 30 seconds later .
After a cold engine is star ted, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first bui ld up in the hydraulic

there is no master key inside the vehicle or if
the system does no t recogni ze it. For exam­
ple, the master key cannot be recognized if it

screens the radio signal. Electron­
i c devices such as ce ll phones can also inter­
fere wi th the radio signal.

This message appears if you press the
I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP ! button to start the en­
g ine and do not depress the b rake pedal. The
engine can on ly be sta rted if the brake pedal
is depressed.
Press clutch ped al to start engin e
This message appears with a manual trans ­
miss ion when you press the
I S TAR T ENGIN E ST OP ! button to start the en­
g ine and do not depress the clu tch pedal. The
engine can on ly be started when the clutch
pedal is dep ressed .
Engage Nor P to st art engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever fo r the
automatic t ransmission is not in the
P or N
position . Th e engine can on ly be started w ith
the selector in these posit ions.
!II Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the II! sym­
bo l if t he maste r key is removed from the ve­
h icle w ith the engine r unning. It is intended

to remind you (e .g. when changing dr ive rs)
not to continue the journey without the mas­
ter key.
If t he mas ter key is no longer in the ve hicle,
you cannot switch on the ignition after stop ­
ping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine aga in. Moreover, you cannot lock the

A WARNING
- Never a llow the engine to run in confined
spaces - danger of asphyx iation.
- Never turn off t he engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and servotron ic only
work when the engine is runn ing . With
the ignition turned off, you have to apply
more force when steering or brak ing.
Since you can not steer and stop normal ­
ly, th is can lead to acc idents and serious
in ju ries .
