button. You can perform an Auto-Check se­
quence when the veh icle is stationary and the
ignit ion is turned on or when the vehicle is
moving slower than 3 mph (5 km/h).
Calling up the drive r information
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usually with a driver
message . The driver message display disap­
pears after about
S seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed again by briefly press­
ing the
! SET ! button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the I SET ! button briefly, you can
set threshold 1 of the speed warning while
you are driv ing
¢ page 28. By mainta ining
pressure on the
ISETI button, you delete the
warning threshold.

The date, time of day, time and date format
can be set in the radio or MMI *. You can learn
more about this in the MMI manual or in the
radio user's manual.
@ Tips
- The dig ital clock turns on for about 30
seconds when the driver's door is
opened.
- When the ignition is turned off, the od­
ometer reading and the digital clock with
date display can be switched on for
--about 30 seconds by pressing the iSE Ti
button ¢ page 11, fig . 4.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the

warning light in the instrument cluster will il­
luminate ¢
page 35. This means you have
approximately
2 .1 ga llons (8 liters) of fuel
left in the tank.
Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in
¢ page 292.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An ir­
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system. The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged.
Odometer
The odometer indicates the distance driven.

switching on the ign it ion and goes o ut w hen
the engine starts, dynamic steering is activat­ ed .
If the ,-w j indicator light illuminates after the
engine starts, a system ma lfunction has oc­
curred. You can continue to drive carefully at a .,,.

- If the ,'2:"J indicator light flashes, dynam ic
steering is being re-initialized. The driver
i nformat ion system display shows the
words "Dynamic steering: initialization"

- The dynamic steering stability systems
are not available in the event of a system
malfunction.
EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warn ing/indicator light (Electronic
Powe r Control) illuminates when you turn o n
the ignition as a function check.
(D Tips
If th is warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are dr iving, then the re is a mal­
function in the engine elect ron ics. Have
the malfunction corrected as soon as pos­
sible by you r autho rized Aud i dea le r o r
qua lified workshop .
J;. ID Electronic stabilization program
(ESP)
If the Jjj indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESP or ASR (Ant i- Slip Regulation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
D] i ndicator lamp ill uminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESP off. I n this case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESP on again . The system is func- tion
ing comp lete ly when the indicator lamp
switches off.
If t he I ind icator lamp illum inates, the ESP
was switched off w ith the
I~ O FF I button.
Stabili sation program and ABS fault ! See
owner' s manual
If the Ii] indicator lamp a nd the ti] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electro nic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ni ng . This a lso inte rrupts the
E S P. The brakes s till function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
D rive to your author ized A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the ma lfunction corrected .

T he I (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada mode ls) i n­
di ca tor light mon itors the safety systems e .g.
airbags, pretens ione rs and illuminates fo r a
f ew seconds each time you switch the ignit ion
on .
If the I (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indica to r ligh t does not go o ut, or if it ill umi ­
na tes while you are driving, o r if i t starts to
blink, then there is a malfunction somewhe re
in the system. If the light does not i lluminate
when you switch the ign ition on, th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
_&. WARNING
If you have a ma lfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dea ler
immediately . Othe rwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an ac ci­
d ent.

(l) Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale indicator lamp
A ppl ies to vehicles: with tire pressure monit oring sys te m
The warning/indicator light appears in the
event of a significant loss of air pressure.
The ti) warning/ind icator light illuminates for
a few seconds after the ignit ion is turned on
as function check, and then goes out.
If the
(g symbol appears, pressure is too low
in at least one tire.
When the system detects a ma lfunction, the
warning/indicator light will flash for approx i­
mately one minute and then remain continu­
ously illum inated. Th is sequence will continue
upon subsequent vehicle starts up as long as
the ma lfunction ex ists. Contact your author­
ized Audi dealer and have the malfunction
corrected .

¢i 9 Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left B or the right II
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When
you use the emergency flashers , both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink tw ice as fast as nor­
mal.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/ indicator light illum inates
when the ignition is switched on to remind
the dr iver and (on USA models only) any front
passenger to put on the safety belt. Add ition­
a lly, an audible warning tone will a lso sound.

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The
fcj symbol lights up when the ign ition is
turned on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed. This indicates that the MIL is work ing
proper ly.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.

The II warning/indicator light illuminates
when the high beams are on or when you use
the headlight flasher. For more information
about using the high beams, see

CRUISE/ (,)" Cruise control
Them! (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
warning/indicator light illuminates when the
cruise control is activated .
ABS/ (9) Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warn ing/indicator light r4iS (USA mod­
els)!Ei] (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
T he light will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not i llum i­
nate when you switch on the ignition .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
while driving.
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.

The ABS warning light and the b rake warn­
ing light come on together. The ABS will not

standard brakes (without ABS). You will
not have the protection ABS provides .

The warning/indicator light monitors the
elec tromechanical parking brake.
Wi th t he pa rking brake applied and the igni­
tio n tu rn e d on, the. (US A
models) ,11 (C an ­
ad a models) warn ing/indi cator lig ht ill umi ­
nates . After the ignition has been t urne d off,
the wa rn ing/ indicato r light cont inues to ill u­
minate for about 30 seconds . If the parking
brake is applied w ith the ign ition t urned off,
the war ning/ indicato r light illum inates for
abo ut 30 seconds .
The wa rning/indicator light wi ll go out when
the pa rking bra ke is re leased .
If the warning/indicator light flas hes continu­
o us ly
after applying the parking bra ke, brak ­
ing fo rce is not s uff icient to prevent the vehi­
cle from rolling unintentionally . Please note
the followi ng:
- If the slo pe of the ground is too steep to
park the vehicle, the addit ional drive mes­
sage appea rs
Caution : Vehicle parked too
steep .
- In the eve nt of a pa rking bra ke malfunction,
the yellow
IIJ symbol appears in the instr u­
ment cluste r display a nd the driver message
Parking brake malfunction! is display ed .

BRAKE/ CQ)) Brake system
The warning/indicator light flashes if brake
fluid level is low, if there is an ABS system
malfunction or a parking brake malfunction.
The 1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
light illuminates when the ign ition is turned
on .
It goes out after the engine has been
started. This indicates t hat the brake war ning
light is funct ion ing properly.
If th e br ake w ar ning light d oes not light up
w hen the engin e is c ranking , th ere ma y be a
ma lfun cti on in th e ele ctric al sys tem. In thi s
case, c ontact an auth oriz ed Audi d eale r.
If the brake system warning/ind icator light
flashes, there is a brake system malfunction .

If the ABS fails, the ABS warning/ind icator

A WARNING
- USA models: If the 1111 warning l ight
and
the m warning light come on to ­
gether, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock ­
up can cause loss of vehicle control and
an acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired
immediately by your authorized Audi
dealer or a qualified workshop . Dr ive
slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake ap·
plicat ions.
- Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
.
lock up first under hard braking . Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control and an accident . Have your vehi­
cle repaired immed iately by your author·
ized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop .
Drive s low ly and avoid sudden, hard
brake applications.
- If the brake warning/ind icator light does
not go ou t after a few seconds and the
pa rking brake released, or lights up wh ile
you are driv ing, the fluid level in the
brake fluid reservoir is too low. If yo u be ­
lieve that it is safe to do so, proceed im­
mediately at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied repair
facility and have the brake system in·
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You must allow fo r
increased braking dis tances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.

Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to sym­
bols.

For example, if the transmission selector lever
is not in the
P position when the engine is
turned
off, the following message appears:
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock
if lever is not in P.
The ignition key can on ly be removed with the
selector in this position. This and other mes­
sages are brought up if a function cannot be
carried out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a dr iver
message is a lso displayed automatica lly.
For example, the. symbol for a problem
with engine oil pressure appears in the dis­
play . The message :
Switch off engine and check oil level
The driver message in the display goes out af­
ter about
5 seconds . The driver message can
be disp layed again by brief ly pressing the
ISETI button i=> fig. 25.
Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a ye llow symbo l appears in the disp lay, a
driver message is also displayed automatica l­
l y.
F or example,
thi- 1-1 symbol appears in the
disp lay, ind icating low windshield washer flu­
id level. The following message also appears:

The driver message disappears after a few
seconds. The driver message can be displayed
again by br iefly press ing the
ISE TI button.
Red symbols
A red symbol means DANGER.

1 malfunction, a red symbol
appears in the uppe r center area of the dis­
play c>

tail. When this symbol appears,
three warning
tones sound in succession . Th e symbol contin­
ues to flas h until the fault has been corrected.
If
several priority 1 malfunct ions are present,
the symbols appear in succession and remain
for about
2 seconds.

0 Alternator malfunction
If the . symbol in the instrument panel dis­
p lay flashes, the n there is a malfunc tion in the
a lt ernator or the vehicle electron ics. A warn­
ing to the driver will appear, too. The driver
warning goes out after about 5 seconds, but it
can be brought up at any time by pressing the
ISETI button again.
Usually, you can still drive to the next dea ler­
ship. T urn off all b ut the most necessary elec­
tr ica l cons umers, since these dra in the veh i­
cle's battery.

If the . war ning symbol (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instru­
ment panel during the trip

then you have to stop immediately and
turn off the eng ine. The coolant pump is
not working anymore--danger of damage
to the eng ine!
BRAKE/ Brake system malfunction
A malfunction in the brake system must be
repaired as soon as possible .
If the warn ing /indicator light-(USA
models)/ . (Canada models) in the instru- me
nt cluster flashes, there is a brake system
malfunction. A driver message appears as
we ll to exp la in the ma lfunction in more de ­
ta il. The dr iver warning goes out after about S
seconds, but it can be brought up at any time by press ing the
ISE TI button again .
