Before you move t he se lector lever from t he P position, yo u must
always ap ply the b rake peda l befo re and while de press ing the bu tton
in the handle of the selector lever.
_& WARNING
• Unintended vehicle movement can cau se serious injury.
- When the selector lever is in a driving position, the vehicle may creep, even at idle speed. Therefore do not release the
parking brake or foot brake until you are ready to move,
because power is transm itted to the wheels as soon as a driv ing
po sition i s engaged.
- Do not accelerate while selecting a driv ing position . At this
time the engine must be at idle speed so that undue stress i s
not placed on the clutches in the transm iss ion.
- Remember : • even when stopped briefly with the automatic
transmission in "D", "S" or "R" , engine power is being trans­
mitted to the wheels . Your vehicle could "creep " forward or
backward. When stopped, keep the brake pedal fully
depre ssed and use the parking brake if neces sary to keep the
vehicle from rolling .
• If the selector lever is unintentionally moved into N while you
are driving, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and wait for
the engine to return to idle speed before selecting a driving posi­
tion.
• Never shift into "R " or "P " when the vehicle is in motion .
• Never get out of the d river's seat when the engine is running.
• If you must get out of the vehicle , move the selector lever
securely into the P position and apply the parking brake firmly .
• If the engine must remain running, never have any driving
position engaged when checking under the hood.

Otherwi se, any increase in engine speed may set the v ehicle in

-Step on the brake pedal. At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the side of the gear selector knob
=:> fig. 140 with your thumb until you have moved the
selector lever to the desired position.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned on. To move the lever from these positions the driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following
warning appears in the instrument cluster display when the se lector
is in
P and N:
When stationary apply footbrake while selecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to D). The locking
element will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N (Neutra l) for
more than approximately 1 second, without the brake pedal being
pressed.
A t speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automatic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N position .
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into certain posi tions . Pressing this button deac­
tivates the selector lever lock. Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different positions. The positions are
highlighted in the illustration=>
page 148, fig. 140.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the selector lever
is in the
P pa rk position. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the
P position. •

Kick-down
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to generate
maximum acceleration .
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond the resistance point
that is reached at full throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine RPM. The engine RPM
will be controlled to produce maximum vehicle acceleration as long
as you continue to press the accelerator pedal beyond this resistance
point .
& WARNING
Be careful when using the kick-down feature on slippery roads.
Rapid acceleration may cause the vehicle to skid. •

Dynamic shift program (DSP)
The automatic transmission is electronically controlled.
The transmission is self adapting and will automatically select the
best sh ift p rogram suited to the driv in g conditions and driving style.
The transmission will select one of the
economy programs when you
drive at a steady speed or a gradually changing speed without heavy
acceleration . This ach ieves optimum fuel efficiency, with early
upshifting and de layed downshifting.
Th e transmission will automatically select the
sporty shift programs
when you dr ive at higher speeds, or w ith heavy acceleration and
frequently changing speeds . Upshifts are delayed to make full use of
engine power . Downsh ifting takes place at higher engine speeds than
in the economy programs . _.,

The selection of the most suitable shift program is a continuous,
automatic process. The driver can also make the transmission switch
to a sporty program by
quickly pressing down the gas pedal.
This causes the transmission to shift down to a lower gear to achieve
rap id acceleration, e.g . for quic kly passing another vehicle. You do
not need to press the gas peda l into the kick-down range. After the
transmission has upshifted, the original program is selected
according to your driving style.
An additional shift program allows the automatic transmission to
select the proper gear for uph ill and downh ill gradients .
This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unnecessarily
on hills . T he transmission will shift down to a lower gea r when the
driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient. This makes use
of the braking effect of the engine without the need to shift down
manually. •

Using the manual shift program you con manually select

Switching to manual shift program
- Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display => fig. 142.
To upshift
-Push the selector lever forward to the plus position 0
=> fig. 141.
To downshift
- Push the lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transmission will automatically shift into
gears 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 before the engine reaches its maximum RPM.
If you apply a light throttle when acce lerating, tiptronic ® wi ll auto­
matically shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle , the transmission will stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached, or until the driver shifts into 2nd gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when driving down a
steep incline , tiptronic ® will downshift from the selected gear into
the next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear, based on road speed and
engine RPM. Automatic downshift ing is interrupted as soon as you
apply the throttle again . _.

downshifts) automatically based on preset d riving programs.
The transmission will select one of the

acceleration . Th is gives best fuel eff iciency, with early upshifting and
delayed downshifting.

If you are driving in hills and mounta ins, the transmission will contin­
uously adjust the gear ratio to the road grade. If you press the brake
pedal when driving downhill, the transmission will downshift auto­
matically. This increases the brak ing effect of the engine.
If the cruise control is on when you are traveling downhill, the trans­
mission will automatica lly select a lower gear ratio in order to main­
tain the set vehicle speed. Th is will cause the engine speed to
increase. •

tiptronic ® manual shift program
Using the manual shi~ program (tiptronic®) you can
manually shift between seven pre-programmed gear
ratios (transmission positions) .

maximum RPM are reached, or until the driver manually shifts into a

steep incline, the tiptronic ® will downshift from the selected gear
into the next lower gear based on road speed and engine RPM. The
automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you apply throttle
again.

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the rear bumpers . If these detect a n obsta cle,
audib le and visual sig nals wa rn you. The range at w hich the sensors
beg in to measure is approximately:

Distan ce warning when reversing s tarts w hen an obsta cle is detec ted
in the range of the parking ass ist system. As the d ista nce decreases,
t he time in te rval between the audib le tones becomes shorter .
When the dis tance is less tha n 1ft
(0.30 m), the tone becomes
cont inuo us. At th is point yo u should stop back ing up.
If the dis tance to an obs tacle stays the s am e, t he volume o f the
distance signal chime is grad ually reduced after about
4 seconds
(does not affe ct the conti nuous signal tone) . App roac hing an oth er
obs tacle w ill cause the distance sig nal to sound aga in at t he normal
vol ume.
Rear view camera coverage area
Th e MM I display s hows the area covere d by the rea r view c amera

page 16 2, fig. 156 G) . Objects that a re not in the area covered @
are not s hown on the MMI dis play .
W e recommend that you prac tice parking w ith th e rear v iew camera
in a traff ic-free location o r parking lot to become fam iliar with the
system, the or ientat ion lines, a nd their functi on . W hen doing this,
there should be good light and weathe r cond itions.
I n the MMI di spla y, obje cts o r ve hicl es appea r closer or fu rt h er aw ay
if:
• you are dr iv ing in reverse gea r from a level sur face onto an incline,
or a dow nwar d slop e,
• you are drivin g in reverse gear toward protrud ing ob jects,

Caring for the rear view camera lens

• Dampen the lens wi th a household alcoho l-based glass cleaner,
and clean the lens wi th a d ry cloth => 0.
• Remove snow with a hand br us h and ice preferab ly w it h a de- icing
sp ray =>0.
& WARNING
• The parking aid cannot replace the driver's attention. The
driver alone is responsible for parking and similar driving maneu •
vers.
• Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's surroundings, using the
rear view mirror as well.
• Do not allow yourself to be distracted from traffic by the rear
view camera pictures.
• If the position and the installation angle of the camera has
changed, for example, after a rear end collision, do not continue
to use the system for safety reasons. Have it checked by a qualified dealership .

Switching on/off
The rear view camera switches on automatically together
with the acoustic park assist when you put the vehicle in
reverse.
Switching on
- Before parking with the rear view camera , the Adaptive Air
Suspension* comfort or automatic mode must be
switched on=:>
page 16.
-Put the vehicle in reverse gear, the acoustic parking
system with rear view camera is activated automatically .
Activation of the acoustic parking system is confirmed by
a brief acknowledgement sound.
Switching off
- Drive faster than 6 mph (10 km/h), or
- take the vehicle out of reverse gear. The acoustic parking
system is immediately deactivated, and the rear view
camera picture is deactivated automatically after a period
of about 15 seconds, or
- switch off the ignition.
The delay in deactivating the camera provides an uninterrupted view
behind the vehicle especially when maneuvering in tight parking
spaces and prevents the picture from turning off the every time you
shift out of reverse . If the warning message appears in the display but
not the rear view
camera picture, read and confirm the warning message. The acoustic
distance signal is always active.
If you press a function button on the MMI control console, the rear
view camera picture disappears. The rear view camera picture reap­
pears the next time you park.
Further information on the warning message and the MMI control
console can be found in the MMI instruction booklet .
(I] Tips
• The rear view camera picture is available as soon as the MMI
Display or the M Ml is switched on, or the start-up phase is completed.
• Keep the sensors in the rear bumper and the rear view camera lens
clean and free of snow and ice, so that the parking system can work
properly . Please follow the additional notes on~
page 167. •

Reverse Parking
Parking mode 1 can be used when parking in a garage or
parking space.

the markings @to help you estimate the distance from an
obstacle. Each marking presents to 3 f t (1 m) . The blue

approximately 16 ft (5 m) to the rear .
- While driving in reverse gear, adjust the steering wheel ang le to fit the parking space with the aid of the orange

The following steps apply only when there is no obstacle
(such as a wall) near the parking spot. Otherwise, please read
the "Tips on Parking Next to Obstacles".
- Activate the turn signal.
- Switch the MMI on and select the reverse gear. The
parking aid turns on and parking mode 1 appea rs on the
display.
- Position your vehicle parallel to the edge of the street,
approximately 3 ft (1 m) from a parked vehicle.
- Press the control button
(D => page 165, fig. 160 on the
MMI control console. Parking mode 2 appears.
- Back up in reverse gear and align your vehicle so that the
blue area ® borders on the rear end of the vehicle or on
the parking spot line. The blue area represents an exten­
sion of the vehicle's outline by approximately 16 ft (5 m)
to the rear. The long side of the blue area should be on the
curb. The entire blue area must fit into the parking spot.
- While the vehicle is stationary, turn the steering wheel to
the right as far as it will go. -
Back into the parking spot until the blue curve touches the
curb => fig. 161. Stop the vehicle.
- While the vehicle is stationary , turn the steering wheel to
the left as far as it will go .
- Continue to back up into the parking spot until the vehicle
is parked parallel to the curb .® marks the rear bumper .
You should stop driving in reverse as soon as and no later
than when the red orientation line© abuts an object
=> & !Keep an eye on the front of your vehicle while doing
this =>

Parking next to obstacles
When there is an obstacle (such as a wall) next to the parking spot,
choose a spot with more space on the sides. Position the long side of
the blue a rea so that the re is sufficient space from the curb. The area
must not be on the curb. You will also need to start turning the
steering wheel much earlier. There should be a sufficient amount of
space between the curb and the blue curve, and the blue curve
=> fig . 161 must not touch the curb.
& WARNING
• The rear view camera does not show the entire area behind the
vehicle => page
162, fig. 156. Watch out especially for small chil­
dren and animals. The rear view camera cannot always detect
them, posing risk of an accident!
• Please note that objects not touching the ground can appear to
be further away than they really are (for example, the bumper of
a parked vehicle, a trailer hitch, or the rear of a truck). In this case,
you should not use the help lines to help with parking, which
poses danger of an accident! _,,,

Adjusting the display and warning tones
Th e display and warning tones can be adjusted in the
MM I.
-Select: Funct ion button !CA R]> Systems *> Parking
system .
Display
• Off -when the parking system is switche d off, only audible sig na ls
are given.
• On -when t he pa rking system is swi tched on, the pic ture from the
rear view camera is displayed.
Warning tones
• Rear volume -rear sensor vo lume
• Rear frequency -rear sensor frequency
• In-car entertainment fader -w hen the p ark in g sys tem is switche d
on, t he volume of the active audio source is lowered.
Th e newly adj uste d value is briefly hear d from the signal generator .
Th e set tings are automat ically stored and assigned to the master key
with remote control.

Always make sure that the volume and frequency of the
warning tones i s adju sted so that you can easily hear the acou stic
distance signal even if the radio is playing , the air-conditioner
blower is on High or there is a high level of outside noise.

Error messages
If a warni ng tone is aud ible fo r about five se conds when yo u turn on
the ignition, the re is a ma lfunction in t he system. Have the prob lem
co rrected by yo ur a utho rized Audi dea ler .

the acoustic pa rk assist system can function p roper ly .•
