(STOP) button again for more than 1 second .
• If you close the driver 's door and lock yo ur vehicle from the

Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake.

- Pull the switch to apply the parking brake ~fig . 104. The
indicator light in the switch will come on.
- Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and press the switch at the same time to re lease the parking bra ke.
The indicator light in the switch wil l go out .
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromec hanical park ing brake
w hich replaces the handb rake. The parking brake is d esigned to
prevent the vehicle from ro lling unintent iona lly .

In addit io n to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
ele ct romechan ica l parki ng br ake p rovides various convenience and
safety functions .
Emergency brake
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle can be slowed even if
t he
normal bra kes fail => page 115, "E merge ncy bra king" .
Indicator lights
• If the pa rking brake is applie d with the ig nition turned on , the
indicator light in the instrument cluster (U.S models:
:'.Ii , Canadian
mode ls: © ) and i n the swi tch
(e)) w ill come o n.
• If the parking brake is applied with the ign ition
turned off , the
indicator light in the in strument cluste r (U.S. models:
::'.l, , Ca nadian
models: ©) and in the switch© will come on for about 30 seconds
and then go out .
& WARNING
If the vehicle is stati onary and the transmi ssion is engaged with
the eng ine running, the e ngine should not be speeded up (e.g.
m anuall y from under th e hood ). Otherwi se the vehicle will st art to
mo ve -you run the risk of an ac cident.

(Ci)) ) flashes in the ins trumen t clus ter, t here is a brake sys tem

• Please also exercise exceptional care when you drive up or down
steep ramps or drive over cu rbs or other obstacles, for which the
vehicle is not designed, because components of the vehicle close to
the ground, such as bumper covers, spoilers and suspension and
exhaust system components , may become damaged. •
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the following:
- Keep the switch pulled and depress the accelerator . The
parking brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
rolling bac kward .
- You can re lease the switch once you are sure tha t you are
deve loping enoug h forward momentum at the wheels as
you depress the accelerator.
Depend ing on the we ight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
sever ity of the incline, you may roll backwards as you start. You can
prevent ro llin g backwards by holding the park ing bra ke sw itch pulled
out and accelera ting - just as you would when starting on a hill with a
conventional hand brake. •
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system fails or
locks.
- Pull the switch and cont inue to pull it to slow your ve hicle
w ith the parking brake in an emerge ncy.
- As soon as you re lease the sw itch or acce lerate, the
braking process stops .
Controls and equip­
ment Safety first
If you pull the switch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h),
the eme rgency brak ing f unct io n is ini tia ted. The vehicle is
braked at all four wheels by activat ing the hydraulic brake system .
Brake performance is similar to making an emergency stop=>& .
So that emergency b raking is not act ivated by mistake, an aud ible
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled. As soon as
the swi tch is released, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, eme r­
gency braking stops.
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be u sed in an emergen cy, when
the normal foot brake ha s failed or th e brake pedal i s ob structed.
Us ing the park ing b rake to perf orm emergency braking will slow
your v ehicl e as if you had made a full brak e app lic ation . Th e law s
of physics cannot be suspen ded even w ith ESP and it s associated
c omponent s (AB S, ASR , EDS ). In corn ers and when road or
weather condit ion s are bad , a full brake application can cause the
v eh icle t o skid or the rear end to bre ak awa y- r isking an a ccident. •
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution : V ehi cle park ed too steep
Th is message appears whe n the parking brake is applied on an incline
that exceeds abo ut 30%.
I n this case the b raking power of the parking brake may
not be
adequate
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.

This message appears , when a gear is se lected and the accelerator
peda l is dep ressed - release the parking brake . .,

The display=> page 116, fig. 106 will show the set speed. The display
may vary depending on the type of display in your vehicle. T he indi­
cator light
CRUISE (US model) I c-f (Canadian model) w ill also light up
in the instrument cluster.
The speed is kept constant via an engine output adjustment or active
brake intervention.
_& WARNING
• Always pay attention to traffic even when the cruise control is
switched on. You are always responsible for your speed and the
distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For safety reasons, the cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and-go traffic, on twisting roads and when road
conditions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing ) - risk of accident.
• Turn off the cruise control temporarily when entering turn
lanes, highway exit lanes or in construction zones.
• Please note that inadvertently "resting" your foot on the accel­
erator pedal causes the cruise control not to brake . This is because
the cruise control is overridden by the driver's acceleration .

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes decelerate
automatically . •

Changing speed
- Press lever in the G)orQ direction ==> page 116, fig. 105
to increase or decrease your speed.
- Release the lever to save that speed.
Controls and equip ­

Change speed
in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing the
lever. If you keep the lever pressed down, yo u will alter your speed in
5 mph (10 km/h) increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed, e .g . if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved earlier wi ll
resume as soon as you release the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed yo ur saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than S m inutes, the cruise control will turn off temporarily.
The symbol will go out but the saved speed will be retained .•

Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehicle is not
moving.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Pull lever into position

- Press the lever in the
0 or 0 direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Release the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed yo u
want before driving on the highway. Once on the highway, act ivate
the cruise contro l by pulling the lever toward

Adaptive Cruise Control can help make driving more relaxed and less
t irin g, particular ly d uring long trips on inters tates or o ther highways
that are genera lly straight.
S et ACC to maintain a constant, legal travel speed between 20 and 95
mp h (3 0 -150 km/h) t hat is a pprop riate for prev ailing traffic co ndi­
tions. Select a following distance to the vehicle ahead and ACC w ill
adjus t you r speed t o mai ntain that dist an ce.
Adaptive Cruise Control has technical limitations that you must k now,
so p lease read this sectio n carefully, un de rstand how t he sys tem
wor ks and use it pro perly at all times.
How does it work?
You ca n operate the Adaptive Cruise Control using the lever on the
st eerin g wheel column=>

What is important for you to know
The Adaptive Cru ise Contro l is set with system-spec ified limits; that
is, as a driver, you will have to a djus t the s pee d and dis tan ce to t he
vehicle ahead in some in stances =>
page 130, "Driver intervention

page 131, "System lim itat ions".
ln. WARNING
Improper use of the Adaptive Cruise Control can cau se collisions,
other accidents and serious personal injury .
• Always remember that the Adaptive Cruise Contro l has limits -
it will not slow the vehicle down or maintain the set distance when
you drive towards an obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not mo ving, such as vehicles stopped in a traffic jam, a
stalled or disabled vehicle .
• Always remember that the Adaptive C rui se Control cannot
detect a vehicle that is driving towards you in your traffic lane and
that it cannot detect narrow vehicles such as motorcycles and bicy ­
cles .
• Never drive at speeds that are too fast for traffic , road and
weather conditions .
• The Adaptive Cruise Control cannot slow or brake the vehicle
safely when you follow another vehicle too closely . Always
remember that the Adaptive Cruise Control has a braking powe r
that is only about 30% of the vehicle 's maximum braking ability .
Always be prepared to b rake and ta ke e vasive action to a void colli-
sions and other accident situations . .,

Driving in traffic

Situations requiring driver intervention
In some situat ions you will have to use the footbra ke to slow the
vehicle down in order to keep a sa fe distance from vehi cle in fro nt of

Passing another vehicle
If you move in to the passing lane and no ve hicle is detected ahea d,
the Adaptive Cruise Control accelerates to the speed you have set and
mai ntains it.
Overriding ACC
You ca n increase your spee d at a ny ti me by steppi ng on t he acceler­
ato r pedal. After you release the accelerator peda l, t he system
adju sts bac k dow n to the s peed yo u previously se t.

Reducing stopping distance
If the radar sensor de
tects tha t the dis tance to the vehi cle ahea d is
less than defined minim um distance, the brakes a re au toma tically
pre pare d fo r emer gency b rak ing by the driver . The brake pads are
moved very close to t he b rake discs wi thou t ac tually b rak ing t he
vehicle . This bra ke ass istant feature reacts more quickly to t he
dr iv er 's brak ing, and a lso wo rks wh en Ada ptiv e Cr uise Contro l is off .
T he stopping distance is reduced as a result of this advance b rak e
pre par at ion. Th is fu n ction does n ot p erform a ny eme rgency brak ing
maneuve rs by itself; t he d river must always app ly the brakes.
& WARNING
• Never rely on the distance control feature of ACC alone to
prevent rear-end collisions. Always be prepared to brake and take
evasive action to avoid collisions and other accident situations.
• Never allow the closing speed between you and other vehicles
to be so high that the Adaptive C ru ise Control m ay not be able to
slow your vehicle safely. If closing speed is too high, you must
apply the brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a rear-end crash.

• Please note that if the Adapt ive Cru ise Control has begun b raking
t he vehi cle and t he dr ive r ch oose s to brake the vehicle additi onally,
t he brakes may fe el "hard". Thi s is s imply due to the press ure build ­
up of the initia l bra king .
• Adaptive Cr uise Contro l is sw itched off afte r pressing the foot­
br ak e. Th e speed saved up this poin t ca n be resu med. T o resume the
saved speed, release t he brake pedal and p ull the control lever _.,
