Switching the ignition on /off

starting process is automatica lly stopped after a
short time. Repeat the start ing process .

- Never t urn off the engine before the ve hicle
has come to a comp lete stop .
Drivi ng
-The brake booster and power steer ing only
work when the engine is runn ing . If the en­
g ine is off, yo u have to use more force when
steer ing o r braking . Because you cannot
steer a nd b rake as you usu ally would, this
could lead to crashes and serious injuries .
(D Note
Avoid h igh engine speed, full th rottle, and
heavy engine load as long as the eng ine has
not reached ope rating temperature yet . You
could damage the e ng ine .

-Some noise after start ing the engine is nor­
ma l and is no cause for co nce rn .
- If you leave the ve hicle w ith the ignition
switched on, the ig nit ion w ill switch off af ­
t er a ce rtain amount of time. Ma ke sure that
el ec trical equipment such as the exte rior
ligh ts a re swi tched off .

Steering lock

mph ( 10 km/h) and press the bra ke peda l.

-Never turn off the engine be fore the vehicle

more force to turn or brake if necessary. Be­
cause you cannot steer and brake as you
usually would, this could lead to crashes
and serious injur ies.
- For safety reasons, you should a lways park
yo ur vehicle with the selector lever in P.
O therwise, the ve hicle co uld inadverte ntly
r oll away.
- After the engine has been sw itched off , the
rad iator fan can con tinue to ru n for up to 10
mi nutes -even with the ig nition switched
off.
It ca n also swi tc h on again after some
t ime if t he coolant te mperature ris es as th e
resul t of a he at bu ildup o r if the eng ine is
hot an d the engine compartme nt is addi ­
t iona lly heated by the sun's rays.
([) Note
Do not s top the e ngine immed ia te ly after
h ard o r ex tende d driving. Keep the engine
r u nning for approxima tely two m in utes to
prevent excessive heat b uild- up.
Driver message in the instrument cluster
display
Turn off ignition before leaving car
This message appears and a warn ing tone sounds
if you open the driver's door when the ignition is
sw itched on.
Press brake pedal to start engine
T his message appea rs if you press the
I START ENGI NE STOP I butt on to st art the engine
and do not depress the brake pedal. The eng ine
can only be started if the bra ke pe dal is de­
pressed.
Ill Is key in the vehicle ?
If the i nd icator light t urns on and the message
appears, the remote co ntro l key was removed
from the vehicle while the eng ine was ru nning. If
the ignition key is no t in the vehicle yo u w ill not
be ab le to sw itch on the ign ition or restart the
engine after it has been switched off . You will a l­
so not be able to lock the ve hicle from the out­
side.

Driving

Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tently if the vehicle is stationary but the en­
gine is runn ing and a gear is selected. Other­
w ise the vehicle will start to move immediate­
ly and could result in a crash.
(D Tips
- If the parking brake is app lied with the igni­
tion switched off, the indicator lights in the
switch and -(USA models)/ . (Cana-
da models) in the instrument cluster will go
out after a ce rtain per iod of t ime.
- Occasional noises when the parking brake is applied and released are normal and are not
a cause for conce rn.
- When the vehicle is parked, the park ing
brake goes thro ugh a self-test cycle at regu­
l a r i ntervals. Any associa ted noises a re nor­
mal.

dren could start the engine, release the

of an accident.

- When the veh icle is locked, no one -pa rtic u­
larly not chi ldren should rema in in the vehi­
cle. Locked doors make it more d ifficult for
emergency workers to get into the vehicle -
putting lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying park ing brake
" Pull the switch
C®l to apply the parking brake .
Starting and automatically releasing the
park ing bra ke
" When you sta rt to drive as usua l, the par king
brake is automatically released and your vehicle
beg ins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping in
city traffic, the parking brake can be applied. The
vehicle does not have to be held with the foot­
brake . The parking brake eliminates the tendency
to creep w ith a dr ive range engaged. As soon as
you drive off as usual, the parking brake is re ­
leased a utomat ically and the vehicle starts to
move .
Starting on slopes
When starting on incl ines, the sta rting assist pre­
vents the vehicle from un intent iona lly rolling
back. The braking force of t he parking brake is
not released u nti l sufficient dr iv ing force has
been built up at t he wheels .
(D Tips
Fo r safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
l eased automatically only when the driver's
safety be lt is e ngaged in the b uck le.

To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an in­
cline, do the following:
11-Keep the sw itch<®) pulled and depress the ac­
celerator. The parking brake stays applied and
prevents the vehicle from rolling backward .
11-You can release the switch© once you are su re
that you a re deve loping enough forwa rd mo­
mentum at the whee ls as you depress the ac­
celerator .
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and
trailer) and the seve rity of the incline, you may
roll backwards as you start. You can prevent roll­
ing backwards by holding the parking brake
switch C®> pulled out and accelerating -just as
you would when starting on a hill with a conven­
tional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system
fails or locks.
11-In an emergency, pull the sw itch<®) and contin­
ue to pull it to s low your vehicle down with the
parking brake.
11-As soon as you release the switch © or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you pull the switch<®> and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
braking function is in itiated. The vehicle is braked
at all four wheels by activating the hydrau lic
brake system . The brake performance is sim ilar
to making an emergency stop¢,& .
In order not to activate the emergency brak ing by
mistake, an audib le warning tone (bu zzer)
sounds when the sw itch(®) is pu lled . As soon as
the switch(®) is released, or the accelerator pedal
i s depressed, emergency braking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an
emergency, when the normal foot brake has
fai led or the brake pedal is obstructed. Using
t he parking brake to perform emergency
braking will slow your vehicle down as if you
D riving
had made a full brake applicat ion . The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associated components (ABS, ASR,
EDL). In corners and when road or weather
conditions are bad, a full brake application
can cause the vehicle to skid or the rear end to
b reak away -risking an acc ident.
Start/Stop system
Description
Applies to: vehicles with Start-Stop-System
The Start-Stop -System can help increase fuel
economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
In the Start-Stop-mode, the engine shuts off au­
tomatica lly when the vehicle is stopped, such as
at a traffic light . The ign ition remains switched
on during this stop phase. The eng ine will be au­
tomat ically restarted when needed.
The last Start-Stop-System setting (on/off using
the b utton
10 -I) will be restored when the igni­
t ion is turned on. The LED in the
10 ~1 button turns
on when the Start-Stop-System is switched off
manually .
Basic requirements for the Start-Stop mode
-The driver's door is closed.
- The driver' seat belt is latched .
- The hood is closed.
- The vehicle must have bee n driven faster than
2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the last stop.
- A trailer is not hitched to the vehicle .
A WARNING
-
-Never let the vehicle roll with the engine
switched off. You could lose contro l over the
veh icle. Th is can lead to a collision and seri­
ous injuries .
- The brake booster and the steering support
do not work while the engine is switched
off . More force is required to stop and to
steer the vehicle.
- To reduce the risk of injur ies, ma ke sure that
the Sta rt-Stop-System is turned off when
working in the engine compartment

Switching the ignition off automa tic ally
To prevent the battery from dra ining, the ignition
will sw itch off
auto mati call y when all of the fol­
lowing cond itions have been met:
- The vehicle has already been driven.
- The eng ine has been turned
off by the Start-
Stop -System*.
- The driver's door is opened .
- The driver's seat bel t is removed.
- The brake pedal is not p ressed down.
- The veh icle is stationary.
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
p laced by the s ide marker lights. The side marker
lights will switch
off after appro ximately 30 mi­
nutes or when you lock the veh icle.
If the Start-Stop System has
not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start-Stop sys­
tem
off manually , the ignition will not be auto­
mat ica lly switched
off and the engine w ill contin­
ue to run~& .

Introduction
Your vehicle is equipped with an electron ically
controlled 8-speed automatic transmission.
Upshifting and downshifting occurs automatical­ ly and is controlled electronically. The driving
style continuously influences the select ion of the
driving program.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving
mode.
It will then change up early and delay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty
driving style
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the dr iver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ~ page 115.

Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents you from select­
i ng a position unintentionally , causing the vehicle
to roll. When engag ing some selector lever .,.

positions, you must press the button on the se­
lector lever

pedal.
You must press the brake pedal to engage a se­ lector lever position when the engine is runn ing
while the vehicle is stationary. The arrows
c:::> fig . 125 indicate when you need to press the
button on the selector lever.
The selector lever does not lock if you shift from D to R within one second. This a llows you to
"rock" the vehicle to free it when it is stuck.
P -Par k
The whee ls are loc ked in this pos it ion. On ly shift
into park when the vehicle is stationary

button on the selector lever and shift into the P
position .
You can on ly shift out of park when the engine is
running and you are pressing the brake pedal.
Press the button on the se lector lever to release
the parking lock and se lect the desired selector
lever position .
P engages automatically when you switch the en­
gine off while D, Sor R is engaged or in manual
mode.
I f you sw itch the engine off when N is engaged,
the transmission remains in N for approximately
30 minutes and then Pis engaged .
You must use the emergency re lease proced ure
to release the parking lock before tow ing the ve­
hicle

R - Reverse
The reverse gear is engaged in this pos ition. On ly
select reverse when the vehicle is stat iona ry and
the eng ine is r unning at idle speed

gage the R selector leve r position, press the but ­
ton on the selector lever, press the brake pedal
and move the selector lever into the R position.
The back-up lights turn on when yo u select the R
se lector lever posit ion while the engine is run­
ning.
Autom atic tran sm iss ion
N -Neutral
The tra nsmission is in idle in th is position. To en­
gage the N selector leve r position, press the but ­
ton on the selecto r lever and shift into the N po­
sition .
If you swi tch the eng ine off when N is engaged ,
the transmission remains in N for approximately
30 minutes and then Pis engaged.
You cannot se lect t he N pos it ion when the igni ­
t ion is swit ched off. When dr iv ing th rough an au ­
tomatic car was h, fi rst select the N position and
then switch the engine off

The veh icle cannot be lo cked when the se lector
lever is in the N position .
DIS -Position for driving forw ard
In the D/S position, the transmission can be op ­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode S. Yo u can only se lect the S se lector
lever posit ion when D is engaged . Move t he selec­
tor leve r bac k to engage the S selector lever posi­
tion . To select the D selector lever position again
when S is engaged, move the se lector lever back
c:::> .&. . To shift from N to D when traveling at
speeds below 1 mph (2km/h), press the brake pedal and select the D selector lever pos it ion
c:::> .&. .
In the norm al mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio . It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty driving . Th e
vehicle makes full use of the eng ine 's power.
Sh ift ing may become noticeable when accelerat­
i ng .
The S se lector lev er position engages automati­
ca lly when you select the dynamic mode in Audi
drive select.
A WARNING ,.___
- Never engage R or P while driving . It could
cause a crash .

Automatic transmissio n
-Power is sti ll transmitted to the w heels
w hen the eng ine is r unning at idle. To pre­
vent the veh icle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake in all selector
lever positions except P and N when the en­
gine is runn ing . Do not inadvertently press
t h e accelerator pedal when the vehicle is
s tationa ry. Otherwise the vehicle will start
to move immediately. This cou ld happen
even if the parking brake is activated.
- Before opening the hood, se lect the P sele c­
tor leve r pos ition and se t the park ing bra ke .
This reduces the risk of a crash . Always read
and follow the applicab le warnings
<=> page 220.
- Never get out of the driver's seat when the
engine is running.
- If you must get out of the vehicle, move the
selector lever securely into the P position
and apply the parking brake.
(D Tips
- If you un intent ionally shift in to the N selec­
tor lever position whi le driving, ta ke your
foot off the accelerator pedal and wait for
the engine to slow down unt il it is idling be­
fore yo u shift into D or S.

helpful to switch to manua l mode temporar ily to
shift

This prevents too muc h stress from be ing placed
on the locking mechanism .

Transmission malfunction
[O] Transmission: please press the brake pedal
and select the position again
Press the brake pedal and select the desired se­
lector lever position aga in. You can then continue
driving .
[O] Transmission hot: please modify driving
style
The transmission temperature has increased sig­ nificant ly due to the sporty driving manner. Drive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
sw itches of .
Dt) Gearbox malfunction : you can continue driv­
ing
There is a system malfunction in the transm is­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected.
[0]/(i) Gearbox malfunction: you can continue
driving in D only until engine is off
There is a system malfunctio n in the transmis­
sion. The transmission is switching to emergency
mode . If you turn the engine off, you will not be
ab le to select any other selector lever positions
after starting the engine again. Drive to your au­
thor ized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
immed iately to have the malfunction corrected .
[O] Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driv­
ing (limited functionality)
There is a system malfunction in the transmis ­
sion. The transmission is switching to emergency
mode . This mode only shifts into certain gears or
will not longer shift at all. The engine may stal l.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dea ler or qualified
repair fac ility immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected .

(you can continue driving)
There is a system malfunction in the transm is­
sion. The transmission is switching to emergency
mode. This mode only shi fts into certain gears or
will not longer shift at all. You cannot engage the
reverse gear. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer
i mmediately to have the malfunction corrected.
