Front read ing lights ~

With the door contact switch turned on, the
interior lights turn on as soon as you unlock
the vehicle or open the doors. The lighting is
also turned on when the ignition key is re
moved. The lights go out about 30 seconds af
ter the doors are closed. When the vehicle is locked or when the ignition is turned on, the
interior lights are turned off.
When a doo r is open, the interior lights are
tu rned off after about 10 minutes to prevent
draining of the battery .
The brightness of the lights is controlled au
tomat ica lly by a d immer when they are
swi tched on and off.
Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the
passengers .

and the location of the reading lights may be

while driving. You can switch this function off by moving the lever to position ® within 10
seconds of the afterwipe operation. The after
wipe function is reactivated the next time the ignit ion is switched on.
The rear wiper automatically switches on
when the reverse gear is engaged and the
front w indshield wipers are on and in opera
tion .
C lea ning the headlights *. The headlight wash
er system * operates on ly when the headlights
are on. If you move the lever to pos ition ®,
the headlights are washed in interva ls .
® -Wipe the rear window. The rear wiper
moves about every 4 seconds .
0-Clean the rear window. The number of
wiping operations depends on how long the l ever is held in positio n 7.
A WARNING
-The ra in sensor is only intended to assist
the driver. The driver is still responsible
for man ually sw itching the w ipers on ac
cording to the v is ibility conditions.
- The windshie ld may not be treated w ith
water-repe lling windshie ld coat ing
agents. Unfavorable conditions, such as
wetness, darkness, low sun, can res ult in
increased glare. W iper b lade chatter is
also possible .
- Proper ly functioning w indshie ld w iper
blade s are required fo r a clear view and
sa fe dr iv ing .

-In the case of frost, check whether the
windsh ield wiper b lades a re fro zen to
t h e windshie ld. Swit ching on the wind
s h ield wipers can d amage t he wipe r
blades!
- Prior to using a car w ash, the windshield
wipe r system m ust be swit ched off (lever
i n position 0) . This helps to prevent unin
tentiona l switching on and damage to
the windshie ld w iper system.

(D Tips
- The windshie ld w ipers are switched off
when the ign it ion is tu rned off . Act ivate
the windsh ield wipers after the ignition
is switc hed back on by moving t he wind
shield wipe r lever to any position .
- Worn or d irty windshield wiper blades
result in streaking. This ca n affect the
rai n sensor function. Check your wind
shield w iper blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozz les of the wind
shield washe r system a re heated at low
tempe rat ures whe n the ignition is on .
- When stopping temporarily, e .g. at a
t raffic light, the set spe ed of the wind
shield wiper s is automatically reduced by
one speed.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
C lean the w indsh ie ld w iper blades when t hey
begin to leave st reaks.

electrical system, you can still adjust the
exterior mirrors by pressing the edge of
the mirror .

Automatically dimming mirrors*
.. To d im the rearv iew mirror and both exterior
mirrors*, press the @button. The diode ®
turns o n. The rearview and exterior m irrors*
dim automatically when light shines on
them, for example from headlights on ave
hicle to the rear.
A WARNING
Electrolyte flu id can leak from automatic
dimming mirrors if the glass is broken.
Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes and
respiratory system .
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to elec
trolyte can cause irritation to the resp ira
tory system, espec ially among people
with asthma or other respiratory cond i
t ions. Get fres h air immedia tely by leav
ing t he vehicle or, if that is not possible,
open windows and doors all the way.
- If electrolyte gets in to the eyes, flush
them thoro ughly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 minutes;
medica l attention is recommended .
-If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affect
ed area with clean water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area
with soap and water; medical attention is recommended . Thoroughly wash af
fected clothing and shoes before reuse.
- If swallowed and person is conscious,
rinse mouth with water for at least 15
minutes. Do not induc e vomiting unless
instructed to do so by medi cal professio
na l. Get medical attention immediately .

Liquid electrolyte leaking from b roken m ir
ror glass w ill damage any plastic surfaces
i t comes in contac t with. Clean up spilled
electrolyte imme diately with clean water
and a sponge .

-Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deacti
vates the automatic dimming func tion of
the exterior mirrors * .
- The automatic dimming m irrors do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected .

operates properly if the light striking the

Seat memory
Memory for driver's seat
Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers
can be stored using the memory buttons in
the driver's door.

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be
stored and recalled through seat memory if
the vehicle is properly equipped.
Storing and recalling settings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
c::> fig. 62 the settings for two different dr ivers
can be stored and recalled
c::> page 63.
The current settings are also automatically as
signed to the remote control key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle
is unlocked, the settings assigned to the re
mote contro l key being used are automatically
recalled.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the IOFFI switch is depressed, the seat
memory is inope rative. When the Memory
function is off , the LED in the button lights up.
A ll the stored settings are retained. We rec
ommend using the
I OFFI switch and deactivat
ing the seat memory if the vehicle is only go
ing to be used
temporarily by a driver whose
settings are not going to be stored.

Storing settings

When the vehicle is locked , the current set
tings are stored and assigned to the remote
control key. But the settings stored on
memo
ry buttons 1 to 2 are not deleted. They can be
recalled at any time. When the vehicle is
un
locked ,
the settings assigned to the remote
control key are restored.
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save your
individual seat position on one of the memory
buttons. You can recall your settings again
s imply and conveniently by press ing the corre
sponding memory button . When the vehicle is
locked, these settings are automatically re-as
signed to the remote control key and stored.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta
tionary -otherwise yo u risk having an ac
cident.
- In an emergency the recall p rocedure can
be cancelled by pressing the
IOFFI switch
or by tapping of the memory buttons.

• It is possible that there w ill be a slight delay
when start ing the engine for diesel vehicles*
in colder temperatures . Therefore, you must
hold the brake pedal down until the eng ine
starts. The indicator lamp

Switching the ignition on /off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without s tarting the engine, follow these
steps :
• Insert the key into the ignition lock.
• Press the key briefly
without press the brake
pedal.
• To switch the ignition off, press the key
again .
Diesel vehicles* are preheated while the igni
tion is sw itched on .
When starting the engine, major e lectrica l
loads are switched off temporarily .
You can on ly remove the key with the ignition
switched off. To do this, you have to press on
the key again.
I f the engine should not sta rt immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
Start-Stop-System*:
Note the information on¢ page 91, Start
Stop-System.
.&_ WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition lock whi le the vehicle is moving .
Otherwise, the stee ring lock co uld sud
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with yo u whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise , the
engine could be started or e lectr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows could be operated
. This can lead to seri
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons req uiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of a n emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve
h icle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatu res.

heavy engine loads unti l the engine has

-Aft er s tarting a col d engine, there may
be a brief period of inc reased noise be
cause the oil pressure must first bui ld up
in the hydraulic valve ad justers . This is
n ormal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off
after a certain per iod of t ime. Please
note that electrical equ ipment such as
exterior lights will sw itch off as well
when that happens .

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be
cause the o il pressure m ust first build up
i n the hydraulic valve adjusters. T his is
norma l and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition

note that electr ical equipment such as
exter ior lights wi ll switch off as well
when that happens.

St eering lock
The stee ring locks when you turn the engine
off using the
I START ENGINE STOP I button
and open the driver's door . The locked steer
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine can be sw itched off
with the selector leve r in the R or D/S posi
tions . To do so, step on the brake peda l and
press and hold the
I START ENGINE STOP I but
ton. The vehicle speed must be less than 6 mph/ 10 km/h.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the eng ine before the ve
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booste r and the
powe r steering is not guara nteed. You
must use mo re fo rce to turn or b rake if
necessary. Because yo u cannot steer and
brake as you usua lly would, this could
lead to c rashes and serious injur ies.
- F or safety reasons, you should always
par k your vehicle with the se lector lever

in P. Otherwise, the vehicle could inad
vertently roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the
ignit ion key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bui ld-up in the engine compa rtment.
- Always take the key w ith you whenever
you leave your veh icle . Otherwise, the
eng ine could be sta rted or elect rical
equ ipme nt such as the power windows
co uld be ope rated. This can lead to seri
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons req uiring
assistance unattended in the vehi cle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending

for an extended period, heat bu ilds up in

off.

sounds if you open the driver's door when the
ignition is sw itched on.
No key identified
This message appears when the
I S TART E NGINE STOPI* button is pressed if
there is no master key ins ide the veh icle or if
the system does not recognize it . For exam
ple, the master key cannot be recognized if it
is covered by an object (e .g . aluminum brief ..,.

-When starting on inclines, the starting as
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels .
Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle
can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

Indicator light s
-If the parking brake is closed with the igni
tion
s witched on the indicator lights come

the instrument cluster and the switch.
- If the parking brake is closed with the igni

on . (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada mode ls) in
the instrument cluster and the switch for
about 20 seconds.
A WARNING
If a drive range is engaged with the veh icle
stat iona ry and the engine running, you
must in no instance accele rate ca re lessly.
Otherw ise the vehicle will sta rt to move
immediately -risk of an accident .

If the symbo l. in the display or the ind i
cato r light .. (USA models) . (Cana
da mode ls) in the instrument clus ter flash
es, the re is a malfunction in the brake sys
tem . By pressing the
ISETI button, you can
bring up a driver message which explains

is the risk of an acc ident.
- When the veh icle is locked, no one -par
ticularly not children should rema in in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more difficult for emergency workers to get in
to the vehicle -putting lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

If you do not wish to use the system, you can
switch it off manually.

tem . Drive the vehicle to an author ized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor
rect the malfunction .
Transmission: Car may roll! Shift to park!
This message appears if the selector lever is
not in the P position when the driver 's door is
opened . You will also hear a warning tone.
Sh ift the selector lever to the P position. Oth
erwise, the vehicle could roll.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns if the driver
exceeds a previous ly stored maximum speed.
A warning tone will sound as soon as the vehi
cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning
symbol appears in the display . The symbol 's
appearance might be different in some mod
els .
The speed warning system has
two warning
thresholds
tha t function independen tly of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes :
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the m axi
mum speed while you are driving . This setting ..,.

(30 km/h to 240 km/h). Settings can each be
adjusted in intervals of
5 mph (10 km/h) .
Cruise control
Switching on
The cruise control sys tem makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph
(30 km/h) .

- Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise control is in
operation . You are always responsible for

your speed and the distance between
your vehicle and other vehicles.
- For reasons of safety, cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro
plan ing) - you could have an accident.
- Switch the cruise control off temporarily
when dr iv ing in turning lanes, h ighway
exits or in construction zones .
- Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the accelerator pedal causes cru ise contro l not to brake. This is due to
the control system be ing overridden by
the driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving off-road or on unpaved roads. The c ruise
con tro l is intended for use only when the
vehicle is being operated on paved roads,
and is not suitable for use off-road or on
unpaved roads.
- If a brake system malfunction such as overheating occurs when the cruise con
trol system is switched on, the braking
function in the system may be switched off. The other cruise control functions remain active as long as the indicator light

Changing speed

You can also press the accelerator pedal down

T his mess age appears if the se lector lever for
the automatic t ransmission is not in t he N or
P positions when starting the vehicle.
- Hybrid drive: System fault! Power
brakes, steering malfunction possible
I f the indica tor ligh t turns on and this mes
sage a ppears, t here is a ma lf u nction in the hy
bri d system. The brake booster and the power
steering may stop working. Stop the vehicle i n
a safe l ocat io n as soo n as poss ible.

Ill Hybrid system: Performance
