Installing a child safety
seat
Securing a child safety seat using a
safety belt
Safety bel ts for the rear sea ts and the front
passenger can be locked with the conver tible
locking retractor to properly secure child
safety seats .
The safety belts emergency locking retractors
for the rear seats safety belts and for the
front passenge r's seat safety belt have a co n­
ve rtible locking retracto r fo r child restra ints . T
he safety belt m ust be locked so that be lt
web bing cannot unree l. The retractor can be
activated to lock the sa fety belt and prevent
the safety belt webbing from loosening up
duri ng norma l dr iving . A chi ld safety seat can
o n ly be prope rly insta lled when t he safety belt
i s loc ked so that the ch ild and child safety
sea t w ill stay in place .
Always remember: Even tho ugh your vehicle is
equipped with an Advanced Airbag system , all
c h ildren, especially thos e 12 years and young­
er, sho uld alw ays r ide in the back seat prope r­
l y restra ined fo r the ir age and size.

A WARNING
Always take special precautions if you
must install a forward or rearward-facing
child restraint on the front passenger's
seat in exceptional situations:
-Whenever a forward or rearward-facing
child restraint is installed on the front
passenger seat, the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light must come on and stay on
whenever the ignition is switched on.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, perform
the checks described ¢

- Take the child restraint off the front pas­
senger seat and install it properly at one
of the rear seat positions if the
PASSEN­

- Improper installation of child restraints
can reduce their effectiveness or even
prevent them from providing any protec­
tion.
- An improperly installed child restraint
can interfere with the airbag as it de­
ploys and seriously injure or even kill the
child.

er's instructions provided with the child
safety seat or carrier.
- Never place additional items on the seat
that can increase the total weight regis­
tered by the weight-sensing mat and can
cause injury in a crash.
A WARNING
Forward-facing child restraints:
- Always make sure the forward-facing
seat has been designed and certified by its manufacturer for use on a front seat
with a passenger front and side airbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child re­ straint up, against or very near the in­
strument panel.
- Always move the passenger seat into its rearmost position in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible before installing
the forward-facing child restraint. The
backrest must be adjusted to an upright
position.
- Make sure that the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched
on.
A WARNING
Rearward-facing child restraints:
- A child in a rearward-facing child safety
seat installed on the front passenger
seat will be seriously injured and can be killed if the front airbag inflates -even
with an Advanced Airbag System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.
-Always be especially careful if you must
install a rearward facing child safety seat
on the front passenger seat in exception-
al circumstances. .,.

-A tight tether strap on a rearward-facing
child restraint attached to the front pas­
senger seat can put too much pressure on the weight-mat in the seat and regis­
ter a heavier weight in the Advanced Air­
bag System . The heavier weight regis­
tered can make the system work as
though an adult were on the seat and de­
ploy the Advanced Airbag when it must
be suppressed causing serious or even
fatal injury to the child.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched
on.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immedi­
ately install the rear-facing child safety
seat in a rear seating position and have
the airbag system inspected by your Audi dealer.
Activating the convertible locking
retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to se­
cure a child restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufactur­
er's instructions when installing a child re ­
straint in your vehicle . To activate the conver­
tible locking retractor:
• Place the child restraint on a seat, prefera­
bly on the rear seat.
• Slowly pull the belt
all the way out.
• Route it around or through the child re­
straint belt path¢,& .
• Push the child safety seat down with your
full weight to get the safety belt really tight.
• Insert the belt tongue into the buckle for
that seating position.
• Guide the safety belt back into the retractor
until the belt lies flat and snug on the child
safety seat .
• You should hear a "clicking " noise as the
belt winds back into the inertia reel. Test the
convertible locking retractor by pulling on
the belt. You should no longer be able to pull the belt out of the retractor.
The con­
vertible locking retractor is now activated.
• Make sure that the red release button is fac­
ing away from the child restraint so that it
can be unbuckled quickly.
• Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt
is properly tight and fastened so that the
seat cannot move forward or sideways more
than one inch
(2.5 cm).
_&. WARNING
-
Using the wrong child restraint or an im­
properly installed child restraint can cause
serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- Always make sure that the safety belt re-
tractor is locked when installing a child
safety seat. An unlocked safety belt re­
tractor cannot hold the child safety seat
in place during normal driving or in a
crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in place even if a child is not sitting in it.
A loose child safety seat can fly around
during a sudden stop or in a crash.
- Always make sure the seat backrest to
which the child restraint is installed is in
an upright position and securely latched
into place and cannot fold forward . Oth­
erwise, the seatback with the child safety
seat attached to it could fly forward in
the event of an accident or other emer­
gency situation.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS
whenever using a child restrained in ave­
hicle is being used

Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution
of electrical energy and thus optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting
the engine .
If a vehicle with a conventional energy system
is not driven for a long period of time , the bat­
tery is discharged by idling cu rrent consumers
(e.g. immobilizer). In ce rtain c ircumstances it
can result in there being insuff icient ene rgy
avai lab le to s tart the engine .
I ntelligent energy management in your vehi­
cle hand les the d ist ribution of electrical ener­
gy. Starting ab ility is marked ly imp roved and
the life of the battery is extended.
Basically , energy management consists of
b atter y dia gno sis, idling curr ent manag e­
m ent
and dynami c en ergy m anag emen t.
Battery diagnosis
Battery d iagnosis continuously determ ines
the state of the battery . Sensors determ ine
battery vo ltage, battery curren t and battery
temperature. This dete rm ines the current
state of charge and the power of the battery .
Idling current management
Idling current management reduces energy
consumpt ion wh ile the veh icle is stand ing .
W ith the ignition switched off, it cont ro ls the
energy s upply to the va rio us electr ical compo­
nents. Data from battery diagnosis is consid­
ered.
D epending on the batte ry's state of charge,
i nd ividual consumers are grad ua lly turned off
to p revent excessive discharge of the battery
and thus maintain starting capability .
Dynamic energy management
W hil e the vehicle is being driven, dynamic en­
e rgy management dist ributes t he energy gen-

erated according to the needs of the individ u­
al components. It regulates consumption, so
that more electrical energy is not being used
than is being generated and ensures an opti­
mal state of charge for the battery.

- But even energy management cannot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
that the power and life of a battery are
limited.

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
star ting capability.
The battery is severe ly taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traff ic and during the cold time
of year. Abundant elect rical energy is re­
quired, but only a lit tle is generated . It is also
crit ical if the engine is not running and electri ­
cal components are turned on. In this in­
stance ene rgy is be ing consumed but none is
being genera ted .
It is in precisely these situations that you will
not ice energy management actively regulat­
ing the d istribution of ene rgy.
Vehicle stand s for an e xtended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of several days or weeks, e lectr ical compo­
nents are gradually cut back or switched off.
This reduces energy consumption and ma in­
ta ins start ing capability over a longer pe riod .
Some of the convenience func tions may not
opera te , such as the interior ligh ts or the
power seat adjustment. The convenience
funct ions w ill be available again when you
switch on the ignition and start the engine.
With the en gine turn ed off
If you listen to the radio, for exam ple, w ith
the engine turned off or use other MMI* func-
tions, the battery is being discharged .

Catalytic converter
Appl ies to vehicles: with gasoline e ngin e
It is very important that your emission con­
trol system (catalytic converter) is function­
ing properly to ensure that your vehicle is run­
ning in an environmentally sound manner .

The catalytic converter is an eff ic ient "clean­
up" device built into the exhaust system of
the vehicle. The catalyti c converter burns
many of the pollutants in the exhaust gas be­
fore they are released into the atmosphere.
The exclus ive use of unleaded fuel is cr itically
important for the l ife of the cata lytic convert­
e r and proper functioning of the engine.
A WARNING
T he temperature o f the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine .
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once
they have become hot. This could result
in burns.
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in
areas where the hot exhaust system may
come in contact with dry grass, brush,
fuel spill or other material which can
cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust
man ifold, exhaust p ipes, catalytic con­
verter or heat sh ields . During driving, the
substance used for u ndercoating cou ld
overheat and cause a fire.
@) Note
- Be aware that just one tank f illing with
leaded fuel will already seriously de­
grade the perfo rmance of the cata lytic
conve rter. -
Do not exceed the correct engine oil level
i=>page 236.
-Do not drive until the fue l tank becomes
completely empty . The engine co uld m is­
fire . Unburned fuel could also get into
the exhaust system and this cou ld cause
the catalytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ignition while the ve­
hicle is mov ing .
- Do not continue to ope rate your vehicle
under these conditions, as otherwise fuel
can reach the catalyt ic converter. Th is
cou ld result in overheating of the con­
verter, requir ing its replacement .
- To assure efficient operation of the Emis­
sion Control System:
- Have you r vehicle maintained p roperly
and in accordance w ith the service rec­
ommendations in your Warranty & Maintenance book let.
- Lack of prope r maintenance as we ll as
improper use of the vehicle wi ll impair
the function of the em ission contro l
system and could lead to damage.
@) For the sa ke of the en vironment
Even when the Emission Control System is
ope rat ing properly, the exhaust gas can
have a sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under
some operat ing states. This depends on
the sulfur content of the fuel being used .
Usi ng a different brand of fuel may help,
or f illing the tank with lead-free super
grade gasoline.
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to vehicles: with diese l eng ine
The diesel part icu late filter filters nearly all of
the soot pa rticles out of the exhaust . T he fil­
te r cleans itself automat ica lly unde r no rma l
dr iv ing cond itions . If the filte r cannot clean it­
self (for example, because you are on ly driving
short distances), the filter becomes clogged
with soot and the

Reducing unnecessary idling
Even when your car is just idling it burns up
fuel.
.,. Shut the engine off when you are not driving
the vehicle.
.,. Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the
engine run at idle .
The idling phase is automatically reduced for
vehicles with the Start-Stop -System* . It is ef­
fic ient to sw itch
off the eng ine in vehicles
without the Start-Stop-System* when stopped
at railroad crossings and long red lights. Turn­
ing the eng ine
off for just 30-40 seconds
saves more fuel than is burned by sta rting the
engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to wa rm up
fu lly when it is running at idle. However , wear
and nox ious emissions are especially high
when the engine is warming up. So you should
drive away as soon as you start the engine and
avoid running at high rpms while the engine is
still warming up.
(D Note
Do not leave engine idling unattended af­
ter starting. If warning lights should come
on to indicate improper operation, they
would go unheeded. Extended idling also
produces heat, which could resu lt in over­
heat ing or other damage to the vehicle or
other property .
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a
lot of fuel .
.,. Have your vehicle serviced at regular inter-
vals.
By having your vehicle regularly serviced by an
author ized Audi dealer helps to ensure that it
runs properly and economically . The condition
of your vehicle not only affects its safety and
ab ility to hold its value, it also affects
fuel
consumption. Check
your oil each time you fill your tank.
The amount of oi l used is re lated to engine
load and speed.
It is normal for the oil consumption of a new
engine to reach its lowest value after a certa in
mileage has been driven .
You must drive your veh icle about 3,000 mi les
(5,000 kilometers) before you can properly
assess oil consumpt ion.
This also app lies to fuel consumption and en­
gine output .

- Have your veh icle ma inta ined properly
and in accordance with the service rec­
ommendations in your Warranty
& Ma in­
tenance booklet. Lack of proper ma inte­
nance as well as improper use of the ve­
hicle will impair the function of the
em iss ion control system and could lead

the Emission Control System unless ap­
proved by the manufacturer.

as heat shie lds , switches, ignition wires,
valves, which are designed to protect

Fuel consumption will always be relatively
high on short trips.
... Try to avoid driving sho rt distances w it h a
cold engine .
T he eng ine and catalytic converter have to
reach their optimal
operating temperature to
reduce fuel consumpt ion and nox ious emis­
sions effectively.
Jus t after starting, a cold engine in a mid-s ize
car only achieves a fuel economy of 6-8 mi les
per gallon (30 -40 l/100 km). After about a
half a mile, fuel economy climbs to 12 mpg .,..

A WARNING
- Only wash the vehicle when the ignition
is off and follow the instructions from
the car wash operator to reduce the risk
of accidents .
- To reduce the r isk of cuts, protect your­
self from sharp meta l components w hen
wash ing the unde rbody or the inside of
the whee l housings.
- After washing the vehicle, the braking ef­
fect may be de layed due to mo isture on
the b rake ro to rs or i ce in the winter. The
brakes must be dried first with a few
careful brake applications.

- If you wash t he vehi cle in an automatic
ca r wash, yo u m ust fold the exterior m ir­
ro rs in to reduce the r is k of damage to
the mirrors. Power folding exte rior m ir ­
ro rs * must only be folded in and out us­
i ng the power folding function.
- Compare the track of your vehicle wit h
the distance between the gui de rails of
the facility - there is a risk of damage to
the wheels and t ires.
- Compare the height and width of your
vehicle with the he ight and width of the
tunnel at the fac ility. -
To p revent paint damage, do not wash
the vehicle in di rect sunlight.
- T o reduce the ris k of damage to the sur­
face, do not use insect removing spong­
es, kitchen sponges or similar items.
- M atte finish painted veh icle compo ­
nents:
- To reduce the risk of damage to the
surface, do not use polishi ng agents or
hard wax.
- Never use car wash cycles that apply protective wax.
It can destroy the
matte fi nish effect.
- Do not place any stickers o r magnet ic
signs on v ehicle parts painted w ith
ma tte fi nish paint. The paint cou ld be
damaged when the stickers o r mag nets
a re removed .
@ For the sake of the environment
O nly wash the ve hicl e in facili ties spe cially
d esi gned for that p urpose. This will red uce
the r is k of dirty wate r contam ina ted with
o il from entering the sewer system.

Selective catalytic
reduction
General information
Applies to vehicles: wit h diese l en gi ne
On vehicles with selective catalytic reduction,
an urea solution (Ad Blue) is injected into the
exhaust system before a nitrogen oxide cata­
lytic converter to reduce nitrogen emissions.
The Ad Blue is stored in a separate tank in the
vehicle . The Ad Blue usage accounts for ap­
proximately 0.5% to 1.2% of the diesel fuel
that is used.
You must refill the Ad Blue or have it refilled
by your authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop as soon as the AdBlue refill mes­ sage appears in the instrument cluster
c;,page229.
A WARNING
Failure to heed Ad Blue refill information in
the instrument cluster can prevent the ve­
hicle from being started and driven. If the
vehicle cannot be driven and an emergency
arises, persona l inju ry can occur.
- Always have the Ad Blue tank refilled well
before the tank ru ns dry.
@ Tips
-The instrument cluster display indicates
the distance remaining that can be driv­
en
c;, poge 228. If the Ad Blue tank is
completely empty, the engine will not
start again after the ignition is switched
off.
- AdBlue is required by law to operate this
vehicle.

• If there was no Ad Blue left in the tank and a
range of
O mi (0 km) was displayed in the
instrument cluster, switch the ignition on
for about 15 seconds before starting the en­ gine.
A WARNING
Ad Blue can irr itate the skin, eyes and res­
piratory system. If there is contact with
the fluid, flush immediately with p lenty of
water. Consult a physician if necessary.
0 Note
- Only use Ad Blue that conforms to the
standard ISO 2224 1-1. Do not mix any
additives with the Ad Blue and do not di­
lute it with water .
- AdBlue is not a diesel additive . Do not
add it to the diesel tank. If Ad Blue is
mixed w ith diesel fuel, it can lead to
damage to the engine and the Ad Blue
tank system. The Limited New Vehicle
Warranty does not cover such damage.
-Ad Blue attacks surfaces such as painted
vehicle components, plastic and carpet .
Remove the fluid as quickly as possible
with a damp cloth and plenty of cold wa­
ter. If the Ad Blue has already crystal­
li zed, use warm water and a sponge .
AdBlue res idue that is not removed will
crystallize and can damage the affected
surface.
- Do not store the refill bottle in the vehi­
cle. If it leaks, the escap ing Ad Blue could
damage the vehicle inter ior.
- Do not allow Ad Blue to come into con­
tact with clothing. If there is contact
with the fluid, flush immediately with
plenty of water.
@ Tips
-You can obtain refill bottles from any au­
thorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop.
- Follow the Ad Blue manufacturer's in­
str uctions for usage and storage.

The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle .

- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has proper­
ly engaged. The hood should be flush
with the surround ing vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not secured properly, stop at once and
close it .
