Rear window defogger QW
The rear window defogger clears the rear wind ow of
condensation.

The rear window defogger works only when the eng ine is running .
T he light in the switch will illuminate when the defogger is on.
The rear window defogger will switch off automatically after a short time. The time the rear window defogger remains on will vary
depending on the outside temperature .
At very low outside temperatures, the rear window defogger can be switched on continuously by pushing the
[ffi) button for more than 2
seconds. This remai ns s tored unti l the ignition is switched off.
A rear window defogger that was switched on also remains stored
for 15 minutes after the igni tion is switched off . If the engine is
restarted within these 15 minutes, the rear window defogger is also
activated, depending on outside temperature. With a veh ic le that is
parked for a short time, the rear window defogger does not need to
be manua lly activated again.

Turn the defogger off when the rear window is c lear . When you save

Air outlets
Air distribution determines the air flow to the individual vents .

- Rotate the horizontal thumb wheel located be low the
particular out let to increase, reduce, or shut down t he
air flow from that out let.
- To adjust the direct ion o f the a irflow from the outlet,
move t he tab in t he center of the outlet in the desired
directio n. The direct ion of the air delivered from the
vents can be adjusted horizontally and vertically.

Air outlets in the rear

- Rotate the thumbwheel located next to the outlet to open
or close it .
- To adjust the direction of the a irflow from the outlet,
move the tab in t he center of the outlet in the des ired
direction. The direction of the air delivered from the
vents can be adjusted horizontally and vertically .
Outlets in the door pillars
-Rotate the hori zontal thumb wheel located be low the
out let to open o r close i t.

- To adjust the direction o f the airflow from the o utlet,
move the tab in the cen ter of the o utlet in the desired
direction . The direction of the air delivered from the
vents can be adjusted hor izontally and vertically .
The air outlets are actuated either automatically or manually

fresh air, or cooled air flows from the vents .
The air outlets to heat the rear footwell are located under the front seats.

If the climate control system is operating in cooling mode, air flows
primarily from the outlets in the center console and in the door
pillars . To achieve adequate cooling, you should never close the
out lets completely .•
Using climate control economically
Using the climate controls prudently can help save fuel.
When you use the a ir conditioner, engine power is reduced
and fuel consumption increases. To save fuel, you should
use the air conditioner only when necessary . A lso please
note the follow ing po ints:
- If you want to save fuel, activate ECON.
- If yo u are g oing to dr ive wit h the w indows or Panorami c
sliding sunroof* open, use ECON .
- If the ve hicle is e xtremely ho t due to the heat of t he s un,
br iefly open doors and windows .

By reducing the amount of fue l you use, you also reduce the amount
of pollutants emitted into the air. •

Rear air conditioning -controls
This overview is to assist you in familiarizing yourself with
the rear air conditioning controls.

The left disp lay indicates the temperature selected for the rear left
passenger, the right display indicates the temperature se lected for
the rear right passenger. If the sett ings for seat heating*, air distri ­
bution or the air conditioning fan are changed, the relevant indi­
cator will appear briefly on the MMI Display.
Each function is turned on or off by briefly p ressing the corre ­
sponding button. T he indicator light in the button illuminates when
t he function is active. .,

Turning rear air conditioning on and off
[ON /OFF ]
Turning on r ear air conditioning
- Press [ ON/OFF] briefly, or
- Press [AUTO ].
Turning off re ar air conditioning
-Press t he I ON /OFF ] button for at least 2 seconds to switc h
the rear air conditi oning of f.
OFF appears in the display.
Turning th e cooling syst em on /off
- Turn ing the cool ing sys tem on/off is done when the air
condit ioning is on. -
Press the
(ON /OFF] b utton jus t briefly.
The air conditioner turns bac k on if you press one of the control
buttons o r th e con tro l knob.

If the e le ctron ic ch ild safety syst em is on , th e re ar air conditioning
control element will not operate. In this case, dashes"---" wi ll
appear in the air conditioning control element display .•

Automatic mode in rear [AUTO )
The automatic mode is the standard setting for all
seasons .
Turning on AUTO
-Select temperature between 60 °F (+ 16 °C) and 84 °F
(+28 °C) .
Press [AUTO] ~ page 131.
Automatic opera tion ensures cons tant temperatures in the interior
and dehumidifies the air inside the vehicle. Air temperature, vo lume
and distribution are contro lled automatically to reach or maintain
the desired in terior temperature as quickly as possible . Fluctuat ions
in exterior temperature and the effects of temperature from the
position of the sun are compensated for automatically.
This operating mode works only in the adjustable tempera ture
range, from 60 °F ( + 16 °C) to 84 °F ( +28 °C) . If a temperatu re below
60 °F
(+ 1 6 °C) is selected, LO appears in the disp lay. At temperatures
above 84 °F ( +28 °Cl,
HI is displayed. At both ext reme settings,
climate control runs continuously at maximum cooling or heating
power . There is no temperature regu lation. •

Setting rear temperature
The temperature can be separately adjusted for the rear
left and right sides.

- Rotate the control knob=:, fig . 14 1 to the left to reduce
the temperature, or to the r ight to increase the tempera ­
ture.
T he range in temperature can be adjusted from 18 °C (64 °F) to 28 °C
(84 °Fl.•

Rear air distribution ®
The automatically controlled air distribution can be
changed manually.
- Press the Di stribution (!) button => fig. 14 1.
- Rotate the contro l knob on the rear air conditioning
contro l element to the desi red setting.
You can adjust the air circulation so that air flows from specific
vents .

• In position @l, all air flows from the vents in the center console
and the ou tlets to the door pillars.
• In position '\},airflows from the out lets in the door pillars.
• In position
,0., air flows from the outlets under the front seats.
There are additional combinations available to adjust air distribu ­
tion as needed.
To regulate air distribution automatically , switch to !AUTO] .•

Rear fan [8fr ]
The automatically preset fan speed can be reduced or
increased.
Press the Blower [ c9fJ] button => fig. 141.
Rotate the contro l knob to the des ired fan speed.
The climate contro l system automatical ly regulates fan speed
depending on interior temperature. You can adjust the volume of air
produced by the fan to your own requirements .
[ i ] Tips
If the difference between the desired temperature set by you and
the vehicle's inter ior temperature is too great, the fan speed wil l
change automatically. This occurs so that the desired temperature
setting is reached as quickly as possible. •

Basic settings (SETUP]
General
The basic settings for the climate control are performed in
the!SETUP] menu.

T he basic settings for the air cond itioning can only be made
with MM I turned on .
- Press the (SETUP) button in the controls to access the menu.
- Selec t the des ired fu nction using t he co ntrol knob (dr iver
or passenger) in t he air conditioning contro ls.
The fol lowing functions can be selected :
• ECON~

• Auto recirc. ~ page 134
• Synchron. ~ page 135 or~ page 135
• Rear operation*~ page 135
G)ECON
When the EC ON function is on~ page 134, this symbol appears in
the status line.
0 Synch ron.
When the Synchron. function is on~ page 135 or~ page 135, this

appears in the status line. •
ECON
The ECON mode helps to save fuel .
The air conditioning is turned off in ECON mode. "ECON" means
"Economy" . By switching off the air conditioning (compressor) , you
save fuel.
P lease note that vehic le interior temperature cannot be lower than
the outside temperature in the ECON mode. The air is not cooled or
dehum id ified.
If the vehic le interior becomes too hot or if the windows fog up,
ECON mode should be turned off . As soon as the [AUTO ] button in
the air conditioning controls is pressed , the system automatically
leaves the ECO N mode, and the air conditioning compressor is
turned on again .•
Automatic recirculation mode
An air q uality sensor detects increased concentrations of
pollu tants in the outside air and automatically switches
t o recirculation mode.
We recommend that you always keep automatic air recirculation ON
to prevent polluted outside air from entering the vehicle interior.
If the
air quality sensor located in the air conditioning system
detects po lluted outside air, the sensor decides whether the air
po llution can be reduced by the factory -installed pollutant filter or
whether it is necessary to switch to air recirculation. With heavy ...

concentrations of pollutants, the air conditioning system is
switched automatically to recirculation mode and the supply of
outside air is blocked. As soon as the concentration of pollutants in
the outside air drops , fresh air is supplied to the vehicle interior
again.
In the event that the windows fog up during automatic air recircula­
tion, you must press the® button immediately.
Under certain operating conditions, automatic air recirculation is
switched off automatically . With outside temperatures below about
+10 °C, automatic air recirculation is limited to 30 seconds . With
outside temperatures below about -1 °C and in the ECON mode,
automatic air recirculation is limited to 15 seconds. •
Synchronization
One climate control setting for the driver and front
passenger seats.
With synchronization active, the driver's settings are adopted for
the passenger or vice versa. All the other settings that were made are transferred to the other seat. This includes all the clima te control
settings, except for the Seat heating *.
If a different setting is selected at a "synchronized seat", synchroni­
z ation is cancelled. •

Synchronization
One climate control setting for all seats.
With synchronization active, the driver's settings are adopted for
the front passenger and the rear left and right seats . All the other
settings that were made are transferred to the other seats. This
includes all the climate control settings, except for the Seat

Rear operation
Using the "Rear operation" function, settings can be made
in the center console control element for the rear left and
right sides of the vehicle.

Set ting the temperature
If you turn the contro l knob on the middle console driver side
control element ~
page 125, fig. 135 to the left, the temperature in
t he rear on the left side is decreased . If you turn the control knob to
the right, the temperature in the rear on the left side is increased
~ page 135, fig . 144.
If you turn the control knob on the midd le console front passenger
side control e lement to the left, the temperature in the rear on the
right side is decreased. If you turn the control knob to the right, the
temperature in the rear on the right s ide is inc reased.
Air di str ibu tion (!)
If you press the Dis tribution (fl control button and then turn the
control knob on the driver or front passenger side, you can set the
desired air distribution for the rear left or right side .
Blowe r [8e ]
If you press the Bl ow er [8e ] control button and then turn the control
knob on the driver or front passenger side, you can set the desired
fan speed for the rear left or right side .
Seat heating Q)
If you press the Seat heat. (i) control button and then turn the
control knob on the driver or front passenger side, you can set the
des ired temperature for the rear left or righ t side ~
page 137. •
Heated Seats
A pplies to veh icles : with e lect ric a lly heate d s eats
Heated front seats Q)
The seat cushion and the seat back of the front seats can
be heated electrically.

In pos ition O the heating for the seats is turned off . The range of
adjustment is between 1 and 6 .
The heater for the front seats can be turned on when the weight of the par ticular seat's occupant is detec ted. How eve r, the front s eats
can be pre -heated for about 10 minutes using the activated seat
hea ter . After this time has elapsed , the seat hea ter automatically
t urns off if i t does not detec t an occupant's weight for the particular
sea t.

To avoid damage to the heating elements in the seats, do not kneel
on the seats or place heavy loads on a small area of the seat . _..

- Rotate the t humb wheel ® to turn on and adjust the
heating for the right rear seat .
With the thumb wheel in the O position , heating for the seats is
turned off . The range of adjustmen t is from 1 to 6.
The heater for the outer rear seats can be turned on when the
weight of the particu lar seat's occupant is detected. However, the
rear seats can be pre-hea ted for about 10 minutes using the acti­
vated seat heater. After this time has elapsed, the seat heater auto ­
matical ly turns off if it does not detect an occupant's weight for the
particular seat .
