Automatic dimming function
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active.
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati­
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when:
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage . Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­
tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma or other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean water
for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area with soap and ._

• If you switch off the automatic dimming function on th e ins ide
mirror , automati c dimming of the out side mirror s will lik ewi se be
di sabled .
• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from
reaching the inside mirror.
• Do not attach any stickers to the windshield in front of the light
sensor, as this wou ld inter fere with the au tomatic opera tion of the
headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside mirror.
• Be aware that automatic d imming of the inside mirror can only
operate properly if the rear window sun b lind * is retracted .•

Turn the adjust ing knob to~ fig. 70 (0 (drive r's side
outside mirror) to @ (front passenger's outside m irror) .
Press the kno b in the appropr iate direction to move the
m irror surface so that you have a good view to the rear .
Heated mirrors*

Depe nding on outside temperature and vehicle speed, the mirror
surfaces are heated unt il the ignition is switched off -even if the

You are well -advised to fold* the outside mirrors in when maneu­
vering in tight spaces o r when leaving the ca r parked c lose to other
vehic les.

• Curved mirror surfaces (convex or spherica l*) increase your fie ld
of view. Remember that vehicles or other objects will appear smaller _..

and farther away than when seen in a flat mirror. If you use this
mirror to esti mate distances of fo llowing vehicles when changing
lanes, you cou ld es timate incorrectly and cause an accident .

If there shou ld be a malfunction in the electrica l system, you can
sti ll adjust the outside mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror .•

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
The outside mirrors are dimmed together with the automatic
dimming of the inside mir ror . When the ignition is switched on, the
mirrors darken automatical ly depending on the light striking them
(e .g. head lights from the rear) .
When the interior lighting is switched on and when reverse gear is
engaged , the mirrors are swi tched back to their original brightness
(not dimmed).
& WARNING

The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

To activate or deactivate, hold the @ button down until
the red display appears or d isappears.
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The
directions are displayed as initials :
N (North), NE (Northeast), E
(East),
SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest), W (West), NW
(Northwes t).

To avoid inaccurate dir ections, do not allow any remot e controls ,
e lectrical systems, or metal parts close to the mirror. •

Setting the magnetic deflection zone
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be set in order
to display the directions correctly .

Hold the@=> fig. 71 button down until the number of
the set magnetic deflection zone appears on the interior rear view mirror .
Adjust the magnetic deflection zone by repeatedly
pressing on the@ button. The set mode automat ically
deactivates after a few seconds .•

& WARNING
• Never adjust the driver's seat while the vehicle is moving. If you
do this while the vehicle is moving, you will be out of position.
Always adjust the driver's seat when the vehicle is not moving.
• Be careful when adjusting the seat height. Check to see that no
one is in the way, or serious injury could result!
• Because the driver seat can be electrically adjusted with the
ignition key removed, never leave children unattended in the
vehicle . Unsupervised use of the electric seat adjustments may
cause serious injury. •

consumption of up to 100 watts, such as a flash light , smal l vacuum
cleaner, etc .

Some of the s torage locations are only found on specific veh icle
models or are optional equ ipment .
& WARNING
• Always remove obje cts from the in strument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around inside the vehicle while driving or
when a ccelerating or when applying the bra kes or when driving
around a corner .
• When you are driving make sure that anything you may have
placed in the center console or other storage locations cannot fall
out into the footwells . In case of sudden bra king you would not be
able to brake , depress the clut ch or accelerate .
• Any pie ces of clothing that you have hung up mu st not interfere
with the driver's view. The coat hooks are designed only for light ­
weight clothing . Never hang any clothing with hard , pointed or
heavy objects in the pockets on the coat hooks . During sudden
bra king or in an accident -especially if the airbag is deployed -
these obje cts could in jure any passengers inside the vehicle. •

The temperature is automatica lly contro lled. Maximum airflow is
primarily blown in through out lets G),@ and

Outlets @ can be opened and c losed with the controls behind
them . Outlets @ and
0 must be opened so the windows can be
defrosted as quickly as possible.

Manual air recirculation mode ~
The recirculation mode prevents polluted outside air from
entering the vehicle interior.
Switching on air rec ir c ulation
- Press the button [~I=> page 100, fi g. 108 => &.
Swit ching off air r ecir culation
- Press the b utton [~I again, or
Press the [AUTO I button, or
- Press the[@] button.
In air recirculation mode, air is drawn from the vehicle interior and
recirculated. We recommend that you use the manual a ir reci rcu la ­
tion mode under the fol lowing conditions:
When driving through a tunnel or i n a traffic jam so that exhaust
fumes cannot enter the vehic le interior.
& WARNING
Do not use this s etting for extended per iod s of t ime . The wind ows
c ould fog up sin ce no fre sh air can enter the vehi cle . If the
window s fog up , pre ss the air re cir culat ion button again immed i­
ately t o switch off th e air re circulation function or sel ect defro st. •
Automatic air recirculation[~ ]
If outside air is pollu te d, an air quality sens or in the
vehicle will automatically switch on the air recirculati on.

The automatic air recirculation mode shou ld norma lly be left
sw itched on at all times.
T he system is ready to operate approximately
30 seconds after you
t urn on the ignition or start the vehic le . Fresh air enters the vehic le
only during this initialization period.
The air qua lity sensor for detecting diese l and gasoline exhaust
fumes switches automatically to air recirculation mode if the outside air is heavily po lluted . The supply of outside air is closed off.
As soon as the pollut ion leve l drops, fresh air is automatically
supplied to the vehic le interior again.
The air recirculation operates fo r a maximum of 12 minutes . If the
windows star t to fog up whi le the a ir rec irculation is on, press(@]
Under certain operating conditions (for example, if
I@ ] or 1~ 1 are
pressed) the a ir rec ircu lation automatically switches o ff. If the air
cond itioner is switched off, or if the temperature is be low 18 °F ( -
8 °C), the air recircu lation wi ll opera te only for 12 sec onds. •

By reducing the amount of fue l you use, you a lso reduce the amount
of pollutants emitted into the air. •
Key coded settings
When the ignition is switched on, the air conditioner
settings are automatically assigned to the key being used.
The air conditioner settings selected are automatically stored and
assigned to the key being used. When the vehicle is started, the air
conditioner automatical ly selects the settings assigned to that key .
This way every driver will maintain his/her own personal settings and does not have to reset them manually.
[ i ] Tip s
If a different driver uses your key and changes the air conditioner
sett ings, the latest adjustments wil l erase and replace the settings
you hav e stored. •
Rear vvindovv defogger QiP
The rear window defogger clears the rear window of
condensation.

-Press the CiiP switch to switch the rear wind ow defogger
on a nd off.
The defogger works only with the engine runn ing. When the
defogger is switched on, an indicator light in the switch comes on .
The rear window defogger switches off automatically after about 20 minutes.
<£> For the sake of the environment
Turn the defogger off when the rear window is c lear . When you save
electricity, you save fuel. •

Electrically heated front seats
With the ignition on, the seat cushion and backrest of the
fr ont seats can be heated.

Use the thumbwhee ls in the center console~ fig . 111 to
turn on and adjust front seat heating. An infinite range of
positions are possible .

Ignition lock and ignition switch
Ignition lock
The engine can be s tar ted or tu rned off with the ignition
key.

In position => fig. 113 ® both the ignit ion and engine are off, and
the steering is locked .
To
lo ck the stee ring after you have removed the ignition key, turn
t he steering whee l in either direction until you hear i t lock into
place . You should always lock the steering whenever you leave your
vehic le . This makes a vehicle theft even more difficult => & .
Ignition on G)
If it is difficult to turn the key af ter you have inserted i t into the igni­
tion lock, turn the steering wheel back and forth . This will take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wil l be able to turn the
key freely and start the engine .
Starting the engine @
In this position the engine starts . Whi le the engine is starting, the
power supply to the headlights and o ther elec trical consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery power . After the engine
has started, release the key and it will return to position
G).
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned
back to posi tion
G) . The non -repeat lock prevents you from
damaging the starter when the engine is running.
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ign ition lo ck w hile the veh icle is
moving. The steering wheel will lo ck causing lo ss of control .
• If you h ave to leave your vehicle -even for just a minute -
alway s remove the ignition key and take it w ith you . Thi s is es pe ­
c ially important if you are going to leave ch ildren behind in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or u se other vehi cle
c ontrol s. Unsupervi sed u se of veh icle cont rol s ( for e xamp le , powe r
window s) can cau se serious per sonal injurie s.
[ i ] Tips
If the veh icle battery has been disconnected and then reconnected,
then you must leave the key in position
G) for about 5 seconds
before you can start the engine .•

Ignition key safety lock
The ign ition key can only be rem oved when the selec tor
le ver i s in the "P" (Par k) p osition.
Place the selector lever in the "P" position before switching off the
engine .
After switching off the ignition, the ignition key can only be
removed from the ignition lock when the se lector lever is in the "P"
(Park) position. A fter you have removed the key , the selector lever is
locked and cannot be moved .•

Starting and stopping the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be started with on original Audi key
and the clutch pedal* depressed.
- Set the parking brake.
Move the selector lever to the neutral position (automatic
transmission): selector lever in P or N) =>
&.
- On vehicles with manual transmission, fully depress the
clutch pedal.
- Turn the ignition key to position@=>
page 108, fig. 113
- do not depress the gas pedal when starting the engine!
- Let go of the key as soon as the engine starts.
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has been started. This is
due to the hydraulic valves building up the oil pressure . This normal
and no need for concern.
If the engine does not star t immediately, stop trying after 10
seconds and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
& WARNING
Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enclosed area.
Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon monoxide, a color­
less and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled .
• Never leave the engine idling unattended. An unattended
vehicle with a running engine poses a danger of personal injury or
theft.
Controls and equip ­
ment

• Avoid high engine speeds, fast acceleration or heavy engine
loads while the engine is still cold. This could damage the engine!
• The engine cannot be started by pushing o r towing the vehicle.
~ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emis­
sions, do not let your vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to drive
off immediately after starting your vehicle. Maintain moderate
speed until the engine is completely warm. Remember, the engine
performs best at operating temperature. •
Stopping the engine
-Turn the ignition key to position@=> page 108 , fig. 113.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off, you have to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accidents and serious injuries.
• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minutes even
after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat build-up in the engine
compartment. .,
