If the central indicator light @turns on, pay
attention to the additional information in the
instrument cluster d isplay @and @.
In addition to the indicator lights in the dis
play, there are others located inside the tach
ometer and the speedometer. They blink or
turn on to display additional functions or mal
functions . Messages @ may also appear brief
ly with some indicator lights. A warning tone
sounds at the same time.
If there is more than one malfunction, the in
d icator lights will turn on one after the other
for a short time.
The indicator lights and messages in the dis
play can be replaced by other displays . If the
indicator light@ is replaced, the central indi
cator light © remains on until the malfunc
tion is corrected. T

Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly as a func
tion check when you switch the ignition on.
These systems are marked w ith a./ in the fol
lowing tables. If one of these indicator lights
does not tu rn on, there is a malfunction in
that system .
Depend ing on the vehicle equipment, your ve
hicle has either a monochrome or multicolor
display in the instrument cluster . In a mono
chrome display, the indicator lights @only
appear in white

Refer to the explanations for red or yellow in

release the parking brake . If you cannot re
lease the parking brake, see your authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili
ty. If you can release the parking brake and
the message still appears, see an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facili
ty immediately to have the malfunction cor
rected.
- If the indicator light and message appear
while driving, the hill start assist or emer
gency braking function may be malfunction
ing.
It may not be possible to set the park
ing brake or release it once it has been set.
Do not park your vehicle on hills and see an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.
(USA models): If the. and&] indicator
lights turn on together, take your vehicle to an
authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility immediately to have the brake
pads inspected c;, page 22 .
There is also a warning tone when the lights
turn on.
A WARNING

fore opening the hood and checking the
brake fluid level.
-If the brake system indicator light does
not turn off or it turns on while driving,
the brake fluid level in the reservoir is
too low, and this increases the risk of an
accident. Stop the vehicle and do not
continue driving. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
for assistance.
-If the brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating func
tion may be malfunctioning. Functions
that stabilize the vehicle are no longer
available . This could cause the rear of the
vehicle to swerve, which increases the

risk that the vehicle will slide. Drive care
fully to the nearest authorized Audi deal
er or authorized Audi Service Facility and have the malfunction corrected.

• Coolant temperature too high! Let engine
run with vehicle stationary
Let the eng ine run at id le for a few minutes to
coo l down .
A WARNING

eng ine com pa rtm ent. This in cre ases t he
r isk of burn s. Wai t unti l you no longe r
see o r hear steam o r cool ant esca ping.

- The engine compa rtment in any vehicle
can be a dangerous area. Stop the engine
a nd allow it to cool befo re working in the
e ng ine compartment. A lways foll ow the

The re is a malfunction in the alternator or th e
vehicle e lectr ica l system .
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or author
ized Audi Serv ice Facility immediately . Be
ca use the v ehicl e batte ry is drain ing , turn off
all unnecessa ry el ectrical eq uipm ent such as
t h e M MI. See yo ur aut ho rized Aud i de aler o r a
qualifie d repa ir fa cili ty if the b attery ch arge
l evel is too low .

If the [ID indicator light turns on there is a
malfunct ion in the engine control.
Drive s low ly to your author ized Audi dealer or
qua lified repai r facility to have the engine
checked.
If the ~ indicato r ligh t turns on when you
start the engine, there is a mal func tion in the
l aunch cont ro l. To start the engine, follow
these steps:

a System indicator light (MIL)
The system indicator light (MIL) is part of the
On Board Diagnostic system (OBD II). The
II symbol turns o n when the ignition is
switched on and turns off again once the en gine is started and run ning at a steady id le
speed . This indicates that the M IL is function
ing correct ly.
The ind icator light turns on if there is a mal
functio n in the eng ine e lectronics. See an au
tho rized Audi dea le r or authorized Audi Serv
ice Facili ty to have the malf unc tion corrected.
The system indicator light (MIL) may turn on i f the fue l filler cap is not closed co rrectly

The diese l particu late filter requires regenera
tion. To assist the filter self-cleaning process:
Drive for approximately lS minutes at
40 mph (60 km/h) or above in the S selector
lever position. Keep the engine speed around
2,000 RPM. The temperature increase that
will result from this can burn off the soot in .,. •

or start the engine on ce yo u stop it . Yo u also
cannot lock the veh icle from the o utside .

Operating
The ele ctromechanical parking brake replaces
t he hand brake.

Your ve hicle is equipped wi th a n ele ctrome
ch anical parking brake. The parkin g bra ke is
designed to p revent the vehicle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In ad dition to the normal fu nctions o f a tra d i
tio na l han d brake, the e lectromechanical
parking b rake provi des vario us convenience
and safety f unctions .
When starting from a stop
-The integral hill start assist helps yo u when
d riving by au toma tically releasi ng the pa rk

- W hen start ing o n in clines, t he h ill sta rt as
sist p revents the vehicle from unintentiona l-
ly ro lling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released unt il sufficient .,.

An emergency braking funct ions ensures that
the vehicle can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes fail¢ page 82, Emergency
braking function .
A WARNING
-Do not press the accelerator pedal inad
vertent ly when the vehicle is stationary
and the engine is runn ing and a gear is
selected. Otherwise the vehicle will start
to move immediately and could result in a crash .
- If the power supply fa ils, the re leased
park ing brake can no longer engage. In
this case, par k the vehicle on level
ground and secure it by placing the se
lector lever i n the P pos ition. See an au

Serv ice Facility for ass istance.

brake is set and released are normal and
are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is pa rked, the park ing
brake goes through a self -test cycle at
regu lar interva ls. Any no ises assoc iated
w ith this are normal.
- If there is a power fa ilure, the park ing
brake will not set if it is released, and it
w ill not release if it is set

curb if the vehicle starts moving.
A WARNING
- Always take the vehicle key w ith you
when leav ing the vehicle, even for a
short pe riod of time. This applies part ic
ularly when children rema in in the veh i
cle . Ot herwise children co uld s tart the
engine, release the pa rking brake o r op
erate electrical equipment such as power
windows, which increases the risk of an
accident.
- No one should remain in the vehicle
when it is locked, especially children.
Loc ked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the ve hi
cle, which puts lives at risk.
